ABOUT THE COVERRoaring toward the camera on this month’s cover is a Centurion Typhoon, a 23-foot wake-

board tow boat from Poorhouse Branch Marina on the Talladega side of the lake. The boat has all the amenities imaginable, including GPS and wakeboard pro cruise control, where the simple programming of a wakeboarder’s name and the speed he likes puts the boat automatically at that speed every time the name is selected. The boats range in prices of $27,000 to $82,000, and Alan Manor of Poorhouse reports average sales of about 50 boats per year, five of which go to Logan Martin. The rest are sold to other lakes and on the Internet. “It’s the biggest growing market,” he said. “It’s the only one that has grown the past few years.”

From the editor…It was a rainy March afternoon,

just weeks since a flood carried a piece of driftwood to its final resting place at the edge of my shoreline.

The unending rain kept me inside for the weekend but as I passed by the French doors, I noticed a Great Blue Heron atop the driftwood standing sentry over the water’s edge.

It was a majestic site in an otherwise dreary day, and it made me pause to think how lucky to be living here, wildlife and water just a short distance away – an inspiring view even in the middle of a downpour.

No doubt people like Julie Pounders can relate. She discovers many a species of birds from her vantage point on the lake, where writer David Atchison explored this month in his continuing series on the Scenic Alabama River Trail.

Linda Messerly can relate as well. A potter by trade, she finds inspiration in her studio by the lake and is featured artist in our Art by Water series.

And while Rick McCleney found the inspiration for his octagonal-shaped house from an airplane hangar, he, too, finds Logan Martin nothing short of inspiring for his art and his unusual home.

There is an abundance of birds in and near Lock 4 Slough,

also known as Graveyard Slough. In the picture, Cindy

Moreland and Julie Pounder look at some passing birds through

their binoculars.

EDITOR’S NOTE: This is a continuing series written by David Atchison, Lakeside Magazine writer and Daily Home Pell City news editor, about his experiences as he trav-els down the Logan Martin stretch of the Alabama River Trail.

I looked down the river and saw two kay-aks headed my way.

It didn’t take long before I recognized Julie Pounder’s voice. She was in one of the kayaks, headed straight toward me. Her laugh was unmistakable.

She was with her friends Cindy Moreland and Jeanette Howard. We met in the middle of the river channel near Lock 4 Slough, also known as Graveyard Slough. The Collins Family Cemetery is located next to the water’s edge in the slough.

Julie and her friends paddled to the shore near the point of the slough’s mouth. There, along the muddy banks, the women scanned the shoreline, picking up freshwater mussels.

“They’re beautiful,” Julie said later at her

home, holding one large shell up for me to see. “Look at the size of these shells.”

Julie and her husband, Jack, have allowed me to use their lakeside home as a launching pad for several short exploration trips in and around Lock 4 Slough, located just off Lock 4 Road in Riverside.

“The birds open them up and eat the mussel,” Julie explained, holding up the empty mussel shell. “I have three granddaughters, and they all have their own collection.”

Mussel shells are not the only thing Julie col-

lects along the shores of Logan Martin Lake. She also collects Indian artifacts, left behind

by Creek Indians, who once inhabited the shores along the Coosa River.

“I think everyone finds them along the river,” she said. “Look at these beads.”

Julie had three stone beads, possibly once part of an Native-American necklace.

She held up a larger stone item, a large arrow-head.

“I found this right by the dock,” she said. “Evidently, everyone finds them all up and down the river. There are people who spend hours and hours looking for these.”

Buddy Spradley, who is an art teacher at Williams Intermediate and Iola Roberts Elementary schools in Pell City, has also collected his share of Native-American artifacts along the Coosa River.

Spradley has an anthropology degree in north and south American-Indian culture

and presents an annual program to Pell City students about the Native-Americans who once lived along the river. His program includes a display of some of the artifacts he’s collected throughout the years.

He said there were large Native-American settlements in Pell City and near Ashville, but the Creek Indians lived up and down the Coosa River.

“There’s no telling what you can find,” he said, add-ing, “beads are rarer.”

He said it’s not uncom-mon to find arrowheads and pottery, especially in the Broken Arrow Creek and Ohatchee areas of Logan Martin Lake.

Not only has Julie found an assortment of Indian arti-facts, but she has also cata-loged an abundance of birds and waterfowl in Lock 4 Slough.

She handed over a long list of birds she identified in just one afternoon while sitting inside her enclosed porch overlooking the lake.

“These are the birds I just sat here and watched Feb. 14,” she said. “I was just sit-ting here.”

Carolina chickadee, mourning dove, Carolina wren, fish crow, mockingbird and a great blue heron, to name a few.

“I’ve got all my friends involved in bird watching,” Julie said. “They’re all nuts about bird watching now.”

And Lock 4 Slough appears to be a magnet for birds, ducks and geese. I did notice the abundance of waterfowl in this area, espe-cially the Canada geese and even a pair of bald eagles that use the area as their hunting ground.

I’ve also noticed spring is right around the corner and people are flocking to the lake, just like birds.

It’s really great paddling weather, cool weather and warm water. I can’t wait to con-tinue my journey south down Logan Martin Lake, exploring new places and meeting new people. I don’t have too much longer before I actually reach the Pell City area of Lake Logan Martin.

So until then, have a happy and safe time on the lake.

Linda Messerly molds her pottery on a wheel located in a small, plain utility build-ing on the other side of the driveway from her and her husband Leon’s home.

There’s nothing special about the build-ing which serves as her studio. It’s filled with supplies and pieces of pottery Messerly has been crafting. But a peek to the back corner of the building reveals its piece de resistance.

That is where you will find a long win-dow with a picturesque view of Logan Martin Lake. That’s where you’ll also find Linda Messerly shaping a wet lump of col-orless clay into something both useful and appealing.

“I can’t wait to get in the studio every morning. There’s always something hap-pening on the lake, on the water, to watch,” Messerly said. “I don’t think I could ever be away from it now that I’ve been here.”

of Pottery Perfect and describes herself as more of a produc-tion potter than one interested in creating art. While all of her pieces are functional, she has an artistic flare when com-ing up with designs. She creates pottery that she finds pleas-ing, and she hopes the charm carries over to her customers.

“That’s where a lot of my ideas come from, something I want for myself and I say, ‘Well, I can make that,’” Messerly said.

She also takes some suggestions for unique pieces from her customers.

“If I can get it in my mind and get my mind around it, then I can make it,” Messerly said.

For example she combined separate chip and dip bowls into one item with the smaller dip bowl resting on top of the larger container for the chips.

Most of her pieces are designed as kitchenware, such as baking dishes, wine chillers, mugs, chicken bakers, soup and cracker sets, steamers, ramekins, apple bakers, and salt and pepper shakers.

baker — I have a monkey bread recipe that goes in it and also an apple walnut cake (recipe),” Messerly said.

She also makes some items for outdoor use, such as wasp catchers, flower holders and flower bowls. Her prices range from $65 to less than $4.

Leon assists with the firing and glazing of the pottery, and the pair has developed some unique-colored glazes from raw chemicals, using recipes the pair has developed. Linda said the carbon released in their gas-powered kiln also gives the pottery a distinctive look.

The pottery business allows the couple to live somewhat of a nomadic lifestyle.

“Mostly I do arts and crafts shows,” Messerly said. “We do about 18 shows a year in nine differ-ent states. We’ve been doing it for about 24 years, starting in Montana.”

Both were born and raised in the “Big Sky State”, but after retirement, they decided some warmer weather would suit them just fine. They have resided in Alabama for about 10 years.

They enjoy traveling, though, and attend arts and crafts shows in Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky. They also occasionally journey back to their home state where Messerly got her start in pottery.

“I started out taking a six-week adult education class at the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, Montana,” Messerly said. “I knew that I loved it and immediately bought the kiln and the wheel and started doing it. I’ve been making it for 24 years and selling it for about 22.”

When she starts producing pieces in the morning, she can usually craft between 50 and 100 pieces. She says she keeps from burning out by coming up with fresh ideas and finding ways to make them into reality.

“It’s really rewarding to come up with new and unique ideas, and that’s the wonderful thing about working with clay — whatever you think of, you can figure out a way to create it because it’s so flexible,” Messerly said.

She’ll also tinker with changing some of her old standby designs to keep her interest in those pieces from going stale.

Messerly loves the rhythm of using the wheel to throw her pottery. She’s never tried another style because she has no interest in doing it any other way. Much like when she decided she enjoyed making pottery, she made a decision and stuck to it.

“I did every craft that came along and did what everyone else was doing. I tried ceramics and did it for a couple of sessions and knew I didn’t want to be pouring or paint-ing someone else’s. I wanted to actually create the piece,” Messerly said.

Backsplashes:Beauty and protection

Kitchen backsplashes were originally intended to protect the walls between the cooking range and wall cabinets from any staining that might occur in the preparation of food.

However, in some of the trendiest Lake Logan Martin homes, backsplashes can serve as artistic focal points to dress up the most popular room for entertaining guests.

“The purpose for a backsplash is to give your kitchen a finished look,” said Paul Golden, owner of I-20 Carpets in Pell City. “It’s not a requirement, but it does cap off your kitchen. It also adds more value to your home.”

The normal height for one is 18 inches, but the length depends on the location of the cooking area and length of the cabinets. Backsplashes are not limited to placement behind a cooking range, but can also be positioned over sinks and desks to help tie the room together.

The imagination is the limit when it comes to styles and designs for backsplashes, Golden said.

“It can have as decorative or as neutral and generic a look as you want,” he said. “There are all kinds of decora-

tive tiles, plaques and resin forms you could use. It’s an art form.”

Many of the backsplashes Golden installs are custom designs.

Some of the most unique backsplashes are the ones made with metal or glass mosaics, he said.

The potential cost of a backsplash, just like the look of the finished product, has a vast range. Golden estimated the cost would start at $3 a foot and increase from there.

“This is not a cheap add-on to your home,” he said. “It can be inexpensive, but it can also be very costly.”

He often works around an existing kitchen theme, but it is not unusual to create a backsplash in conjunction with a full kitchen upgrade. Many times people will replace the coun-

Although it is important to coordi-nate the backsplash with its surround-ings, the key to creating one that will last, Golden said, is to design one that is timeless and won’t go out of style.

“It’s not necessarily a fashion trend,” he explained.

Many people are looking to such add-ons as they remodel their homes instead of purchasing or building new ones.

A good backsplash can also help sell a home for those looking to move.

“The kitchen is one of the main focal points in the home,” Golden said. “A good backsplash is an eye-catcher if you’re trying to sell your home. If your kitchen sells, you’ve sold the rest of the home.”

The kitchen is also where most guests spend the majority of their time, he said, which is why a good backsplash or two can make a quiet contribution to successful entertainment environment.

McCleney built, the thought of an aircraft hangar would never come to mind.

But the whole idea for the house came from an aircraft hangar he read about that was built for use during World War II.

The design of the hangar had eight sides, giving room for the aircrafts’ wings on the sides and room for the tails in the center.

McCleney thought the design would work well for a house.

And it has.A building contractor and designer

himself, he started working on the plan, which took three years to complete.

He had designed other houses and buildings before, so the task was one he had done many times.

A former U.S. Air Force Staff Sergeant jet engine mechanic, McCleney com-pleted architectural design school after the service.

He’s been in building since and now says he retired once but has gone back to work.

These days, he’s been working on the house called Quinlan Castle on Birmingham’s Southside, doing renovations for the historic home to become offices for Southern Research Company.

McCleney built his eight-sided house on Logan Martin 10 years ago. He had come to know the lake area because of his interest in fly-ing. He came to Pell City to take flying lessons, eventually buying a plane, and thought he’d like to have a lake home.

He found a site on the water, it faces the “first slough when you get to Riverside,” McCleney said.

There’s a circular drive in front, and burgundy double doors with glass insets open into an ame-nity not seen often, even in lake houses. There’s

a full sized pool in the center of the house, where McCleney also included a hot tub and spa.

The edges of the pool are gracefully curved and bordered with decorative tiles that meet brick edging.

There’s a huge atrium over the pool, built with cypress beams and a built-in exhaust system in the very top to redirect hot air.

There’s a series of 17 paned windows around the top of the atrium, keeping the pool area filled with natural light

Flooring around the pool is painted burgundy, and walls are a light gray, as they are throughout the house.

From the right of the pool room, there’s an open living and dining area that joins the kitchen.

Broad windows line the living room, and a light gray sectional sofa wraps along one side of the room. The same shade of gray carpeting is used in the living and dining rooms, where there’s a table for six set with place settings in a nautical design.

Ask about the paintings in the house, and McCleney admits that they’re all his own work.

He said painting just came naturally for him. After all, he went to school for design.

His artistic inclination is evident throughout the house, the mural of whales diving in the pool room is his work, and so is the stained glass piece of a light house on the beach that hangs over a window.

Windows in the living and dining rooms are fitted with light filtering plantation shades in white.

The rooms curve due to the octagon shape of the house, and on the other side of the dining

room is the kitchen.An L-shaped countertop has space for bar-

stools on one end and continues along the wall for work and serving space.

Cabinets are pickled oak. The same gray countertop is used along the

sink area on the other side of the kitchen and there’s a deep, double white porcelain sink, sur-rounded by more oak cabinets.

Flooring in the kitchen has a rose pattern along the edges.

From the left of the front entry, the walkway around the pool leads to a guest suite, where a nautical theme is continued.



The master bedroom stretches along one side of the

house and looks out on the Logan Martin view.

A white four-poster bed has a navy comforter, and pil-lows and a swag above the bed feature a pattern of boating designs. There’s a matching white chest and tables in the room.

A walk-in closet leads into a guest bath, decorated with a seaside motif of lighthouses and boats.

The vanity is pink marble and flooring is slate gray tile.Another bedroom is located next along the walkway, and

a double-decker bed with navy cushions and covering is used in the room.

McCleney put a large bath and dressing room alongside the pool for changing and showering, and thick towels are tucked into wicker baskets along a shelf for pool users.

The master bedroom comes next, and the room spreads alongside a back corner, with large windows looking out to the lake and woods. Carpeting is light gray as are walls, trimmed with a darker shade of gray. A king-size bed is cov-ered with a burgundy silk spread, etched with embroidered flowers at the edges. Pillows are covered with a matching fabric, and round side tables are covered with gold silk and glass tops.

Collections of nautical knots are framed and hang beside the bed, as do several more of McCleney’s own paintings.

A large painting of a pair of wading storks McCleney did hangs in the entry to the master bath, where vanities are pink marble, and cabinetry is pickled oak. A deep garden tub is set in gray tile.

At the rear of the house, a broad sunroom is decorated with white wicker furnishings along with a cozy couch

covered with a soft floral print against a white background. Two wicker rockers promise a comfortable place to look out over the lake, and a glass-top table and wrought-iron chairs fitted with plush cushions make a good spot for dining and watching the water.

Double glass doors lead into the sunroom from the pool area.

The room was built with his wife, Julia, in mind, who passed away last fall.

“She really enjoyed it here at the lake,” McCleney said. The couple were married for 45 years and have six children – five girls and a boy.

All but one of the McCleney children live in Alabama, with one daughter living in California. The children entered a variety of careers. They work as a teacher and coach, a CPA, a computer analyst, a bank officer, and interior deco-rator.

The interior decorator, Vanessa Reynolds, is the daughter McCleney credits with the interior look of his house. She

operates her own interior design business in Pell City.At the other side of the back of the house, there’s a deep

deck all across with room for plenty of guests. A wall of windows looks out to the deck from the pool.

There’s a table and four chairs on the deck for dining or visiting, upholstery is blue with a white floral print.

A smaller child-size table and chairs are on the deck for the younger set to use, handy for when any of the 14 grand-children come to the lake.

A sloping walk through the woods takes visitors to the boathouse, which is two stories with a covered deck on top, fitted with a swing and a hammock and seating all around. McCleney keeps a fishing boat handy for outings on the water, and says he’s just “average” when it comes to fish-ing. There’s a personal watercraft, too, for enjoying days on Logan Martin Lake.

McCleney said the lake house has been the spot for lots of gatherings with friends and family. “It’s just always been fun coming here,” he said. “That’s the best part about it.”

Outpouring of support puts new life into

Chapel in the Pines

It’s that time of year again. The Chapel in the Pines is kicking off another summer of

services on Sunday, May 3.This year, patrons will notice some things are the same

— the opening service speaker — while other things are dif-ferent — new, upgraded pews.

From the first Sunday in May through the last Sunday in September, multi-denominational, lakeside services at Pine Harbor are held at 8:30 a.m.

People come “as they are” by boat, car or on foot to wor-

ship by the lake.The ministry, founded in the mid-1960s, is an outreach of

the First United Methodist Church of Pell City. The 30-minute weekly services feature hymns, prayer,

music and an offering before the sermon, which is preached by different area ministers each week.

Birmingham Minister Lindy Martin said he kept the date for this year’s service open. He has been the opening speaker — with the exception of last year — since the cha-pel began holding services 40 years ago.

Martin, who began preaching 60 years ago when he was just 17, said he still comes each year to deliver the opening sermon because of the people who attend.

The elements and a tornado had taken their toll on the benches at Chapel in the Pines. Thanks to support from people in the area, all of the benches have been replaced for services this year.


“I’ve grown to know a lot of the people, so it’s like a homecoming each year,” Martin said, adding the chapel’s congregation is easy to preach to.

Martin said each year he speaks on different topics dur-ing his opening sermon — but he hasn’t decided what he might preach this year.

“I don’t plan very far ahead,” he laughed. “I usually use a story from the New Testament. I think they like that.

“I think people go to the lake to get away from it all, and I try to keep it light and encouraging.”

The Rev. Mark Parris, senior pastor at First United Methodist Church in Pell City, said Martin has been a favor-ite throughout the years.

“He’s a very genuine person and a good speaker,” Parris said. “He’s very interesting to listen to, and he always brings a message that leaves you with hope in your heart.”

The generosity of the congregation led to the lakeside chapel receiving new benches this year.

Paul Wright, with Wright’s Landscaping, said that, because the old benches had direct contact with the ground, it was decided the new ones would not, making them easier to repair over time.

Wright said they poured a concrete pier for the benches so the wood had no ground contact. He said the new bench-es will be more durable.

Wright, a member of the FUMC in Pell City, was asked last year by the chapel board how he would approach the repairs and was later asked to make the renovations.

“People have placed them in honor or memory of some-one,” Parris said.

opportunity to replace the benches. “By the generosity of those who come to chapel, we were

able to replace them all,” Wright said. Wright said the work began in November — cutting trees

back and removing the old benches. “Basically, we had it all done for the Christmas Eve ser-

vice,” Wright said. In the intervening months, Wright said, other work, like

cleaning, has been done to get ready for the summer sea-son.

Summer pool coming to Logan Martin early

Alabama Power is hoping to get Logan Martin Lake to full summer pool a month ahead of schedule this year.

According to Alabama Power the lake is projected to reach full pool one month early this spring.

Brandon Glover, a spokes-man for APC, said Logan Martin Lake is projected to reach full pool, 465 feet above sea level, by early to mid April.

Normally, APC does not completely fill Logan Martin Lake until about the first week in May.

Despite the recent heavy rains that have blanketed the area over the past couple of months, forecasters have said this spring could be drier than normal.

In response, Glover said APC is trying to get the lake level up early.

Much of Alabama and Georgia was in a sever drought last year, and weather forecast-ers predicted a dryer than nor-mal winter and spring.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mobile District, continues exercising drought procedures for the upstream headwaters of the Coosa River.

After a long journey, a special statue has found its home on the lake.

“Our statue is unique, considering what it has been through,” said Kelly Love.

Love said the adventure began in New Orleans on her birthday, Aug. 20, 2005.

“We went to New Orleans for a birthday trip,” she said.

Love said her husband, Bill, was searching for a birthday present for her.

“We went into Sutton Fine Arts on Royal Street in the French Quarter and found this statue that looks like our children,” she said.

Love said the bronze statue has two children standing with an umbrella over them, and resembled their chil-dren, E.J. and Maddie.

“The statue was quite heavy, so they made arrangements to have it trucked to Birmingham along with the next store shipment to Birmingham,” she said. “We didn’t realize that Hurricane Katrina would come through a few days later.”

Love said the statue meant a lot to them because of the tie to their chil-dren.

statue,” she said. “After the hurricane, I tried to call, but that didn’t work.”

Love said she also wrote letters inquiring about the statue, but with no success.

“A little over a year later, I got a call that we had a deliv-ery,” she said. “It was the statue.”

Love said she was finally able to get in touch with Sutton Fine Arts after the statue arrived and learned that the hur-ricane had disrupted their operations for approximately a year.

“They had no way to communicate or do anything else for months after the hurricane,” she said. “When they were able to, they filled the orders.”

Love said they were unsure what to do with the statue.“We have a house in Lincoln, and we weren’t looking for

property, but we came around one day on a boat and saw this property for sale and bought it,” she said.

Love said the property is on Cape Choccolocco, where Choccolocco Creek meets the Coosa River. The Loves are planning to build a house on that property.

“The statue had been in storage, but we put it in (on the property) in the last few weeks,” she said.

Love said her brother-in-law, Dwayne Love, built the statue base, and put in the plumbing, pump system and laid the rock for the base.

“He didn’t have a lot to go by, because not many people have a bronze statue on the lake,” she said.

Love said the pump system brings water up through the statue and out over the umbrella held by the two children.

“When the lake water is up, it should come to the base of the statue,” she said. “The statue base will look just like a rock in the water.”

Love said they positioned the statue so it faces out, look-ing down the river. The area around the statue is a small swimming area for Love’s nieces and nephews, and they expect the ducks and geese to use the statue base for a perch when the water level is up.

“The statue is finally where it needs to be,” she said.

Curt Simpson of Bowling Green, Ky., and Paul Sublett of Canton, Ga., have been making an annual trip to Logan Martin Lake for decades, just to fish. They have been doing this since even before they both retired from IBM.

Simpson leases a condominium at Lincoln Harbor Resort off Stemley Road, and the two friends spend their days from dawn until after dusk, reeling in striped bass from their favorite lake.

“We have been doing this 30-plus years, and we have never missed a spring break,” Simpson said.

“We’ve planned births, weddings, moves and divorces around this annual trip,” Sublett quipped.

Logan Martin Lake has become a second home for them as a result, he said.

It’s not hard to believe when they begin talking about their favorite local restaurants and other haunts, such as Stemley Station (“They have great steaks,” Simpson said) and the Shack Barbecue. They even mention locals by name with ease.

Simpson exchanges Christmas cards with one resident by the name of Ray Mialam. Simpson and Sublett met Mialam when he once made them hot chocolate and brought it out to them where they were fishing on a dock.

Simpson said the things that keep them coming back to this Alabama lake — out of all the lakes he could visit — are

the quality and quantity of fish found in the lake, the most beautiful sunsets he has ever seen, and the genuine Southern hospitality.

Until Simpson discovered the newly constructed Lincoln Harbor Resort, the two friends have stayed in everything from budget hotels to bed and breakfasts during the years they have traveled to Logan Martin Lake.

Everywhere they go, the people are friendly, Sublett said. The lakeside locals have consistently invited the fishing friends to everything from dinners to parties and fish fries.

“The No. 1 thing that keeps me here, though, is the University Marine,” Simpson said of the marina where he keeps his fishing boat. “The owners there are Jack and Chuck, and as far as I’m concerned, they are typical Southern gentlemen — they have been nothing but nice to me.”

This is the kind of hospitality Simpson likes to share with others. He leases a Lincoln Harbor condo for three months out of the year and invites friends to come visit so he can show them what he calls “one of the best-kept secrets around here.”

This March, Simpson brought visitors from California, Florida, Texas, Tennessee, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and North Carolina.

“We’ve pretty well got the map covered,” he said.He doesn’t always take his guests fishing, but this year he

The newbies were Sublett’s three sons, Keith, from Austin, Texas; Mark, from Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and John, from San Diego.

“We’ve heard about these trips all these years growing up, but this is our first time to share in the experience,” Keith said.

Simpson said he and Sublett have had to scale back their enthusiasm for the sport a little this time, since the younger men are along.

“As much as we love fishing, it’s about the friendships,” Sublett said.

“They’re warriors,” Mark laughingly said of Sublett and Simpson. “For these two, fishing is definitely a stamina

sport.”They usually wake up at 6 a.m. and head out onto the

water shortly thereafter. They fish all day, snacking on tootsie rolls and other sweet treats throughout the day until they return to the marina around 8 p.m.

They have favorite fishing spots, but where those are located, Simpson said roguishly, is proprietary information.

The younger men, though not as hard core as the regulars, said they have enjoyed their trip and hope to become a part of the annual tradition.

“It’s been a great change, and it puts things into perspec-tive,” John said. “I can go fishing in California, but it’s usu-ally a stocked lake and it’s just not the same. This is real.”

“The development has 32 lots with lake front-age and 37 off the lake, along with a common area,” Dempsey explained. “During the auction, the sellers will maintain the right to accept or reject all formal bids, and there will be no mini-mum bid for any of the lots. And we are antici-pating that all of them will sell.”

The project as it was originally envisioned was “a lot more dense than what we’re talking about now,” Dempsey said. “I wouldn’t want to say 100 percent, but I’d say the economy was certainly a major factor in scaling back.”

Both the old and new plans have been approved by the City of Pell City, he added.

Fields said the development would be largely on property from the estate of the late Gloria Roberson, who owned Pell City-based Union State Bank.

The reserve will definitely be a positive addition to the lakeside community, Fields continued.

“I won’t say it’ll be the nicest development out there, because there are some nice ones. But it will be among the nicer, based on what kind of homes people are going to build there.

“There will be a set of restric-tive covenants that will protect the value of the property, but I can’t say exactly what those will be just yet.

“The owners are working with an attorney on that right now, but nothing has been finalized.”
