To buy or not to buy? That has long been apoignant question. Buying was the domain ofthe middle and upper classes whilst for those in the seemingly

lower orders, renting was the only option. It has been so for many years inthe UK, but not so on the continent where renting was the normal option.

In the 1960s, just as we were all encouraged to go to university, so toowere we encouraged to buy a home. Not owning your own home carried astigma, the tories sold off swathes of council properties and we all gotmortgages – well not all, but a great many.

Now renting is once again a respectable option and rightly so. There ishowever a backlash against private landlords and buy to let mortgagees.Why so?

Many people have decided to invest their savings into a secondproperty for the purpose of creating several things. In some cases this isincome, in some that income merely covers the cost of buying theproperty and maintaining it. In a more long term view it can be seen as apension, income for later. Of course like all things this carries an elementof risk. As we all know only too well, the property market is a volatile one,and whilst prices can rise, they can also fall. Private landlords take thatrisk at their own expense.

What they do though, which has to be far more important, is bringhomes to the rental market. Not all landlords are rogues and without theprivate rental market homelessness would be a far more worrying issue.

Renting is not a sign of fecklessness nor is buying to let a sign of greed,both have a validity in modern society and we should all do what we needto or can afford to do.

The area either side of thei360 will be transformed to create twobrand new beautifully landscaped publicspaces including a celebration of West Pierheritage and a flexible new event space.

Brighton & Hove City Council isproposing to borrow £1.4m from thegovernment’s PWLB (Public Works LoanBoard), and earnings from the Brightoni360 will fund this. Few people realise thatthe Council has already earned over £1million from the i360 in financing feesbefore we have even opened and willcontinue to earn over £1m a year inrevenue from the i360. This money will bereinvested back into the city, providing avery welcome source of funding at a timeof cuts.

So what is planned? The piazza to thewest of the Brighton i360 (next to the newlyopened West Pier arches) will become afantastic flexible event space, all yearround. This will provide a unique backdropto events like no other on Brightonseafront. Imagine taking a dance class oreating popcorn at a deckchair cinema onthe seafront. Or perhaps attending anintimate concert or play where the sea andbeach provide the set and scenery.

The piazza on the East side of the i360site will become a heritage area, designedto reflect the history of the West Pier. It willprovide seating and a new setting for theWest Pier columns and magnificent WestPier Octagonal Kiosk once it has beenrestored.

These plans unite Brighton’s history together with its future and aredesigned to elegantly complement the i360 making this part of Brightonseafront an area that can be enjoyed for many many years to come.

Once approved, the works are due to take place from February 2016 intime for the i360 opening in Summer 2016. for me to visit to discuss thisyear’s Eco Open Housesevent.

It was two years ago thatdesigners Malcolm and LindaKemp sold their largeVictorian home of 20 years at177 Ditchling Road. It wasoriginally the home of thebuilder, Mr Over, who wasresponsible for a number ofthe adjoining properties.Unsurprisingly, it was builtwider and deeper than theneighbouring houses, with amuch longer garden.

By regularising the size ofthe garden, and making useof rear access through anadjoining mews area, theKemps were able to create anew plot for their dreamhome. Deacon & Richardsonwere instructed as architectsand R & R Building Services aslead contractor. The projectwas completed in May.

The last house, at the topof Grantham Road is No. 55. Along narrow alley (the widthof a Transit van with the wing-mirrors folded in, saysMalcolm) leads to areconstructed stable buildingsurrounded by garages. No.57 is tucked away behind.Concrete had to be pumped up by pipe during the build.

The house is upside-down insofar that the lounge, kitchen and terraceare upstairs, and bedrooms below. The third bedroom acts as a studioand overlooks a wildlife pond. Materials include black bricks, whiterender, flint and larch. There are many eco features such as a woodburner, solar thermal and photovoltaic panels, an air source heat pump,FSC timber, Velfac windows, and bird and bat boxes. I love it.
