De-coupling of A levels• AS and A level Qualifications are
independent.
• AS qualifications are not contributory.
• Rigorous internal assessment will be
used to benchmark progress and
determine continuation into Year 13.
• Big reliance on collaboration; – Spencer Academies Trust, SSAT, PiXL, Alliance
working board and national forums.

Making informed and responsible choices
• The ‘Rasch’ model attempts to quantify how difficult A levels are based on
comparing student performance against a general predictor of academic
ability.
• Whilst results are questionable, it is really important to ensure the choices a
student takes at A level gives them the best chance of success.
• Things to take into consideration:
– Assessment procedures
– Controllable elements, i.e. coursework
– Link to GCSE
– Specification content

‘Target setting’
• Targets are designed to outline minimum expected progress
based on tangible evidence
• They are not what we think your child ‘should’ get or what
they are capable of
• They are definitely not designed as a ceiling
• They are designed to show your son / daughter how
students of a similar profile achieve nationally, relevant to
the subject area.
