Rolls-Royce starts assembly of first higher-thrust Trent XWB

Rolls-Royce started assembly of the first higher-thrust version of the Trent XWB which will ex-clusively power the Airbus A350-1000 aircraft. The Trent XWB-97, a 97,000lb-thrust version of the engine, will run for the first time later this year, with first flight scheduled for the end of 2016 and entry into service in 2017. The increased thrust is achieved through a combi-nation of new high-temperature turbine tech-nology, a larger and scaled up engine core and a higher-flow fan enabled by advanced aero-dynamics. This has allowed Airbus to increase the A350-1000 payload range and maximum take-off weight. Meanwhile, manufacture is continuing on the first production 84,000lb-thrust Trent XWB engines that will power the first A350 XWB into commercial service with Qatar Airways in 2014.

A350 XWB makes first touchdown in UK

The new Airbus A350 XWB made its first ever landing on British soil, visiting Cotswold Airport in Gloucestershire as part of routine certification tests. The aircraft, MSN3, was flown by London-born experimental test pi-lot, Frank Chapman, and is one of the four A350 test aircraft currently flying and un-dergoing rigorous testing in preparation for the A350’s certification and entry into service later this year. In total the A350 XWB flight test campaign will accumulate around 2,500 flight hours with the fleet of five aircraft.

V2500 reaches new operational mile-stone

The V2500 engine program reached a new operational milestone when two first-run V2527-A5 engines powering TAM’s A320ceo aircraft remained on wing without a shop visit for nearly 20,000 cycles and 30,000 flight hours. The engines – V12339 and V12341, rated at 27,000 pounds of thrust, are estimat-ed to have each flown in excess of 9.5 million miles since installation. Airbus unveiled the A350 XWB’s development cabin interior in-stalled on board flight-test aircraft ‘MSN002’ at the Airbus site in Hamburg. MSN002, which made its first flight on February 26th, 2014, is the first of two test aircraft fitted with a passenger interior and is part of the growing A350 XWB development fleet. Intensive cabin flight and ground tests have already been performed during a two-week stay of the aircraft in Ham-burg in mid-March 2014. The cabins of all Airbus aircraft are developed by the engineering and research teams based there. The new interior demon-strates how the aircraft’s “eXtra-wide”

fuselage will soon offer passengers even more personal space, flexibility and comfort in business and economy classes, and es-

pecially, a wide 18” seat in 9-abreast economy. A350 XWB MSN002 will be tasked with conducting a series of “Early Long Flights” with its cabin accommodat-ing real passengers. ‘Hot and cold’ cabin trials will also feature in its busy test pro-gramme, which also includes validation of the advanced fourth-generation in-flight-entertainment (IFE). MSN002 will soon be joined by the second cabin-equipped A350 MSN005, which will be tasked with route-proving flights around the world to the major destinations it will serve.

In recent weeks, GE Aviation announced a GE-Branded Services Agreement (GBSA) with Air France-KLM for the maintenance, repair and overhaul of the GEnx-1B and a new joint venture with Evergreen Aviation Technologies (EGAT) called GE Evergreen Engine Services, which will provide MRO services for both the GEnx-1B and -2B. Air France-KLM and GE Evergreen Engines Services join a network that includes GE Aviation overhaul facilities in Prestwick, Scotland and Petropolis, Brazil. Other GEnx MRO partners include Abu Dhabi Aircraft Tehnologies (ADAT), which received FAA and UAE General Civil Aviation Authority approval for quick turn operations late last year and ultimately will be an overhaul facility for both the GEnx-1B and -2B; Lufthansa Tech-nik, which has a GBSA for maintenance, repair and overhaul of the GEnx-2B powering the Boeing 747-8; and Air India, which has a GBSA for GEnx-1Bs.
