    Eat This, Burn Fat

    Oatmeal

This slow-digesting carb keeps blood sugar and insulinlevels low, so fat burning can stay high. Research hasshown that athletes who consume slow-digestingcarbs in the morning burn more fat throughout theentire day and during workouts than those consumingfast-digesting carbs.

WalnutsAll nuts do contain some amount of the omega-3fat alpha-linolenic acid, but most only containtrace amounts. The real fat hero in most nuts ismonounsaturated fats. Walnuts are actually a richsource of omega-3s. One ounce provides almost 3

    grams of alpha-linolenic acid.

AvocadoThe monounsaturated fats found in avocados areburned readily for fuel during exercise and actuallyencourage fat burning. As an added bonus they are alsoa good source of ber and antioxidants.

Olive OilLike avocados, olive oil is a great source ofmonounsaturated fats. Not only do these fats lowerlevels of the bad type of cholesterol and improvecardiovascular health, but theyre also more likely tobe burned as fuel, which means theyre less likely to besticking around your midsection.

SalmonThis sh is one of the richest sources of omega-3essential fats, EPA and DHA. Unlike axseeds, whichprovide a type of omega-3 that has be converted intoEPA and DHA, salmon provides the body with a directsupply of them with no conversion required.

GrapefruitA study out of California found that subjects eating half

of a grapefruit or drinking 8 oz. of grapefruit juice threetimes a day while maintaining their normal diet lost anaverage of four pounds over a 12-week period. Resultswere likely due to grapefruits ability to reduce insulinlevels. In addition grapefruit has been shown to alsohelp lower cholesterol levels.

    Cinnamon

Helps to reduce blood sugar levels, which in turnprevents the body from storing sugar as fat. Addcinnamon to foods such as oatmeal or yogurt toenhance the avor without adding calories.

eProtein, healthy fats and Vitamin D (found in the yolk)all work in concert to slim you down by warding ohunger pangs.

BroccoliThis brous carb doesnt provide many net carbs, but itcan make you feel full -- one reason why its a great food

for getting lean. Broccoli also contains phytochemicalsthat can help enhance fat loss

Green TeaNot only is green tea packed with antioxidants, it alsocontains catechins, a type of phytochemical that helpsto speed up metabolism and burn more fat.

FlaxseedsContaining the essential omega-3 fatty acid alphalinolenic acid, axseeds are work all the way to thegenetic level. These omega-3 fats have been found toturn on genes that stimulate fat burning and turn ogenes that increase fat storage.

Red PepperHot peppers contain the active ingredient capsaicin, achemical that has been shown to speed up metabolismand curb appetite.

GingerUsed for centuries to help relieve digestive disturbances, ginger can also help reduce inammation, boost bloodow to muscles and aid muscle recovery. It has also hasbeen shown to boost calorie burn when eaten.

WaterConsidered one of your best allies in ght against fat, studies have shown that drinking two cups of coldwater can boost your metabolic rate by as much as 30percent.

    SUPERFRUITS

A superfruit is usually a rare fruit

    with high anti-oxidant levels and

high nutritional values not found in

    common fruits.

    Examples of these popular items:

Acai Berry - Known to boostmetabolism and energy levels

    Blueberry - While seemingly

    common, its great for those

    watching their blood sugar levels

Goji Berry - Rich in antioxidants

that work to protect your eyes,

    boost your immune system, and

    promote longevity

    Cranberry - Benets the

    cardiovascular system, immune

system, and works as an anti-

    cancer agent.

Add these healthy and delicious fat-burning foods to your daily diet for impressive results.

Baking Strike in the Kitchen! It is TOO hot to cook in the kitchen! How are we going to eat?

    By KelliNicole

While weve been trying to survive this almost unbearable triple-digit heat, its come to my attention that its just toohot to cook. I cant seem to bring myself to slave away over the stove for a couple of hours cooking up a nice meal. Iwant a cold meal. I dont want hot soup or a piping hot platter; I want something cold to keep my body temperature aslow as possible. The next thing that comes to mind is that Ive been so busy that I usually dont have time to cook up anice meal in the evening anyway. What to do, what to do?

The best places in Norman for cool dishes are the ones least thought of. I know that I usually get into a kick of goingto the same place over and over again because it has what I love. Well thats nice, but Mexican food usually isnt cold, except the guacamole. So, here are some cool foods for these hot summer days:

Fish! Believe it or not, most places that serve sh have dishes that are light and satisfying for these hot summer days. The Big Tuna has shrimp cobb salad, tilapia dinners and even oyster po-boys that are to die for.

Sushi! Going along with the sh theme, sushi is a delicious meal with many avorful choices. At O Asian Fusion, youcan order sushi rolls with a side of chilled sake, then try the unique green tea ice cream for dessert.

Salad! Salads are a great cool meal, and the toppings are neverending. You can put all kinds of fruits, vegetables ormeats on a salad to make it your own. The best salads Ive encountered are the ones that sounded skeptical. Coolgreensis the place to go to try out a variety of salads, which is what they are known for.

So even though Im currently hiding in my nicely-cooled house while it feels like an inferno outside, I plan to ventureout to one of the local joints in Norman to eat a light and cool meal.

Directions:Preheat oven to 350 degrees.1. In a medium-size pan, bring 1 cup o water and1/2 cup o quinoa to a rolling boil. Reduce heat andsimmer on low until all o the water is absorbed. Thisshould take anywhere between 10 and 15 minutes.*Cooking your quinoa on low is extremely important.I you let it simmer on a hotter ame, the water will

absorb too quickly and the quinoa will turn out hard.

    2. Cool the cooked quinoa in the rerigerator or atleast an hour beore preparing the salad.

    3. To prepare the salad, slice grape tomatoes in haland cut the block o resh mozzarella into bite-sizepieces. Mix together. Then, add the chopped basiland cooked quinoa and give the salad a toss. Next, drizzle on the olive oil and season with a little saltand pepper (to taste). Give your salad a fnal toss andserve cool or at room temperature.

    Kellis Tip

    All About Salads

Believe it or not, saladsare as diverse as New

York City, and there aremany ways to add some

dynamics to your salad soyou dont get burnt out

    so quickly.

    Use darkgreens such

    as arugulaor romaineto add

    nutrients to your diet.

Fruits, such asstrawberries, oranges, blueberries, or mangosput more excitement in

    your salad.

    Grated boiled eggs,avocados and chicken

add protein and asouthwest air to your

    salad.

    NFL Predictions

You can follow Chris Joseph on ...

    @chrisjoseph1400

And listen to his show 360 Sports on Sports Talk 1400from 5-7 P.M. Monday through Friday.

ts that time of year again when Fantasy Football players get all geeked up and are preparingfor the big drafts for their teams. It also means it is time for REAL football to be underway.Last year in the Super Bowl the New York Giants beat the New England Patriots, PeytonManning is no longer a Colt and Tebow is a Jet -- that being said here are my predictions for

what I think will happen in this NFL season.

NFC EAST: This has traditionally been one of the toughest divisions from top to bottom. Thisyear is no dierent with returning Super Bowl champs the New York Giants, the wannabe dreamteam in the Philadelphia Eagles, the pressure growing on Tony Romo and the Dallas Cowboysand the future in RGIII with the Washington Redskins. I feel the Eagles will play as they wantedto last year and win the division, and the Cowboys improved defense will help the Star make itinto the playos this year. Washington will improve but they join the Gi ants in not making theplayos this year.

NFC WEST: This division to me is really a t wo-team race, but only one team will make the playos. The San Francisco 49ers made a return to greatness last year under Jim Harbaugh with goodquarterback play from Alex Smith. They added Randy Moss and Brandon Jacobs to that oenseand will continue to dominate the West. The Arizona Cardinals are building a very good defensebut will struggle on the oensive side of the ball. The Saint Louis Rams led by Sam Bradford willcontinue to struggle moving the ball as well not obtaining any receiver help for Sam. The SeattleSeahawks with the new uniforms will look good but play horrible. The 49ers will be the onlyteam to make the playos from this division.

NFC SOUTH: This Division may be the most improved this year with likes of Cam Newton atCarolina and the young Bucs at Tampa Bay. The New Orleans Saints have the most to overcomewith players and coaches being suspended for the Bountygate issues. Drew Brees is signed andis going to make a ton of money, but can he lead the Saints marching back to the playos? TheAtlanta Falcons, still led by Matt Ryan, look to get back to a 12-win season. From this division Ihave the Tampa Bay Buccaneers winning and moving on to the playos.

NFC NORTH: The black and blue division returns to greatness with three really great teams andan average team in the Minnesota Vikings. The Green Bay Packers have a great oense and a baddefense. The Chicago Bears can be the most dangerous team this year in the NFC if Jay Cutlercan stay healthy; the window is closing on linebacker Brian Urlacher. Detroit and Matt Staordwelcome a host of Sooners and look to build on a playo run last year but fall a little short. I havetwo teams making the playos with the Bears winning the division and the Packers making thepost season.

NFC Playos: San Francisco 49ers and the Chicago Bears will have the byes in the rst round ofthe playos. The Cowboys lose to the Packers and the Lions beat the Eagles. I have the Packersbeating the Bears and the 49ers beating the Lions, setting up a Packers-against-49ers NFCchampionship game and the 49ers punching their way to the Super Bowl.

AFC East: This has been a one-horse division for years, and the New England Patriots look tcontinue their dominance. The Bualo Bills look to be improved with better defense and a soliground game. The New York Jets are a circus while adding Tim Tebow, and with the cornerbackthinking they are the best receivers on the team, the green fall at on their face. In Miami thDolphins are still a subpar team and Ryan Tannehill will struggle as the quarterback. As thPatriots and Bills punch tickets to the playos this year, the Jets will be left wondering what thhell happened.

NFC NORTH: This is the strongest division in the AFC. The Pittsburg Steelers quarterback BeRoethlisberger says he has a partially-torn rotator cu not good for a quarterback to haveThe Baltimore Ravens have a slimmed-down Ray Lewis and still a mash-you-up defense, andRay Rice and Joe Flacco will nally pull it together. Cleveland has Brandon Weeden and TrenRichardson to lead an up-and-coming oense. The Bengals in Cincinnati led by Andy Dalton ana group of talented receivers including Jermaine Gresham are good but not good enough thi

year. The Steelers and the Ravens will battle it out again and make it to the post season.

AFC WEST: This division boasts some of the best rivalries with the Denver Broncos, OaklanRaiders, Kansas City Chiefs and the San Diego Chargers. Denver has Peyton Manning aquarterback and a solid defense. Oakland is still Oakland and will not just win. The Chiefs wilstruggle as will the Chargers. The Broncos will stampede into the post season.

AFC SOUTH: No more Peyton Manning with the Colts. The Houston Texans made thebreakthrough last year with a solid ground game. The Jacksonville Jaguars had problems witMaurice Jones-Drew and getting Justin Blackmon into camp, and the struggles will continuduring the season. Tennessee will be better but not quite good enough as the Texans play bettethan the Andrew Luck-led Colts and they will make the postseason again.

AFC Playos: The Patriots and the Ravens have the rst-round byes. The Steelers beat the Texanand the Broncos beat the Bills. Second-round actions sees the Patriots beating the Steelers anthe Ravens knocking out Peyton and the Broncos, setting up Patriots against the Ravens for theAFC title. I have the Ravens making it to the Super bowl by beating the Patriots, setting up thHarbaugh Bowl.

Super Bowl: The 49ers and the Ravens will square o in the Super Bowl -- the head coaches arbrothers and both teams have amazing linebackers. I predict Alex Smith will make a few morplays than Joe Flacco and the 49ers will win another S uper Bowl.
