WELCOME

Welcome to Mr

Volkering who will

now lead our school.

We all look forward

to meeting you and

making you very

welcome!

Dear Parents,

Welcome back to term 4 which is always

hectic, but even more so, given the number

of exciting events planned within the

broader community in coming months. If

the last few days are any indication, the

term will disappear quickly and Christmas

will be upon us before we know it. More

importantly, I would like to acknowledge

the work of Denise Findlay and her

leadership as Principal of Mansfield Primary

School over the last 10 years.

I would also like to acknowledge those

parents, students and members of the

school community, who have come up to me

in recent days to welcome me and wish me

well, as I settle into the role as the new

Principal at Mansfield Primary School.

I have hit the ground running; meeting and

greeting all students and classes last

Monday, the first day of term. It was a

hectic day, but I was really impressed by

the calibre of work displayed by the

students and the dedication of staff.

Each week, I will be including a section in

the newsletter to support parents.

Parenting these days is significantly

different to what it was like 10 or 20 years

ago. What is different is the fact that children have far

more distractions than ever before and therefore, they can

be more difficult to manage and keep on task. Lots of parents

find their role challenging, but I don’t know of any book that

was ever written that provides all the answers to effective

parenting.

One person who I have come to admire is Michael Grose, a

prominent author and respected psychologist, who has

written extensively on effective parenting. Michael’s website

www.parentingideas.com.au is a really helpful site for parents

and we will be including “Insights” from Michael’s newsletters

on a regular basis in future MPS newsletters.

As mentioned, this term will be hectic as the High Country

Festival and Spring Arts celebration gets into full swing.

Community celebration and promotion is important and our

students will be involved in a number of projects supporting

both the Festival and Spring Arts Including the Targa Race

on November 4th. Whilst it is important to support

community events, we also need to remember that our role as

a school is to teach and manage the day to day learning that

takes place at school every day.

Parents are reminded that it is important to ensure children

are wearing hats this term as part of our Sun Smart policy.

It would appear that some children have forgotten to wear

their hats this week, possibly as a result of the cold

mornings.

We are asking parents to ensure all children are wearing

their hats by next week and that children take responsibility

for their hats.

A number of our older students are heading to Melbourne

tomorrow, to participate in the Zone Athletics

Championships. We wish them well knowing that they will give

their best and represent the school, displaying outstanding

sportsmanship.

Yours sincerely,

Paul Volkering

Principal.

From the School Chaplain Growing Up

It seems that many students have grown over the recent holidays. I know I am quite short, but there are suddenly many students who are taller than me. It is particularly noticeable amongst the grade 6 students.

They have grown physically. They have grown emotionally.

The grade 6 students are that much closer to High School and some are most definitely “ready to go”. While some are growing out of their clothes, others are growing out of Primary School and are beginning to take much more responsibility for themselves.

On the first day of term, before school, I was reminding some of the grade 6 students that this was their last “first day of term” in Primary School. As I began the conversation, I said something like: “Can I point something out to you?” The vast majority replied, “Yes, we know we have to wear hats in term 4.” Certainly, they were correct, but it was not what I wanted to remind them about.

But it occurred to me that they are learning they don’t need to be reminded about all the rules any more. They are growing up and getting ready to move on to the next phase of life….. as they do!
