Drew Guarneri enters his sixth year as the Head Coach of the Mesa Community College women’s soccer program. He also coached the men for the previous five seasons. Guarneri established the men's soccer program at Chandler-Gilbert Community College in 1998 and coached through the 2006 season. He also coached the women at CGCC from 2000 through 2006. His teams produced three All-Americans, four Academic All-Americans, and one National Team Award for Academics. He was named ACCAC Men's Coach of the Year in 2003 and ACCAC Women's Coach of the Year in 2004. He also was Phoenix Women's Sports Association Coach of the Year in 2005. Guarneri has also coached a multitude of squads in the Gilbert Soc-cer Club since 1995, and has a great deal of playing experience. He competed while attending Butler University in 1989, at Drake University from 1990-1993, with the Des Moines Menace of the USISL in 1993, the Arizona Sahuaros, a D3 Pro League team in 2000, and finally, the Banat Arsenal, a competitive adult league team from 2001-2007. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology at Drake University in 1993, and a Masters of Science in Public Programs and Recreation Manage-ment from Arizona State in 1996..

assistant coacHes

Assistant Coach Joseph Paulsen Former Mesa player and Northwest Christian University graduate Joseph Paulsen joins the Mesa coaching staff for the first time in 2013. A Gilbert H.S. gradute, Paulsen has extensive local coaching experience. He has been the head coach at Arizona College Prep and is currently the girls' varsity assistant and head JV coach at Chandler's Hamilton H.S. He was boys' assistant and head JV coach at Campo Verde H.S. From 2010-11. In addition he he worked with the San Tan Legacy Excel U10 Boys, 97 Girls White and 02 Boys Blue.

Bryan Gerard joins the Mesa staff for his second season after a year as goalkeeper coach at Scottsdale Community College. He played two seasons at Kansas Wesleyan and has had experience on the field at several local clubs including San Tan, AZFC, Scottsdale Blackhawks and Arsenal. Went to training camp with the Puerto Rico Islanders, a member of the Premier Divi-sion of the SUASL. He began his coaching career as Director of Goalkeeping for the San Tan Legacy, where he still coaches. He has also worked with the Valparaiso Futball Club, Hamilton High School, the SoccerPlus Goalkeeper School and gives private lessons. Gerard trained under Tony DiCicco, head coach of the 1999 USA World Cup champi-onshp team. He has a national "E" license.

assistant coacHes

Rick Garish begins his tenure with the Mesa women's coaching staff. He has over 15 years as a player, coach or director at many levels of soccer. Currently he is a Physical Education Instructor in the Peoria Unified School District and is also working in the Arizona Olympic Development Program.He is also coach of the Blackhawk Soccer Club in Scottsdale. He spent 15 years with the Vardar Soccer Club of Arizona/Michigan and was a vol-unteer assistant women's coach at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, AZ from 2010-12. In addition, he was a Physical Education teach and department chair in the Hum-boldt Unified School District, was Sports Manager and Games Management Volun-teer for the Special Olympics and was Assistant Manger for the Troy, Mich. Sports Center. He has two Master's degrees: one in Secondary Education From Grand Canyon University and the other in Sports Management from California (Pa.) University. He received his Bachelor's from Saginaw Valley (Mich.) St. after graduation from Macomb Community College. He has a United States Soccer Federation "B" License and numerous other accredi-tations.

Few, if any, NJCAA schools have had the overall success of the Mesa Community College athletic program. Through the end of the 2012-13 season, MCC teams had won 16 national championships in seven different sports, either won or shared 130 conference and region titles and have produced an amazing number of individual accomplishments. MCC athletes have won All-America recognition an incredible 255 times including athlets from every sport the school sponsors. As recently as 2007 Mesa won the Pepsi Cup (now called the NATYCAA Cup), emblematic of the top overal athletic program in the NJCAA and has finished in the Top 25 in each of the last five years among over 400 schools..
