As the cliché goes, the only permanent thing in this world is change. Thus the school year 2012-2013 continues to welcome fellow Centralinos with quite a few transformations in various aspects within the university. The pharos, like our university continues to undergo modifications to further serve the students. This is the pharos 2nd issue - a deviation from the usual broadsheet type the publication has been releasing for the past years. Under the new editorial board, the pharos with these changes will continue to uphold truth and freedom of speech.

T eamwork, the byword in the academe, the workplace and even among nations in achieving their common

goals. Teams are indispensable as support and collaborators that can help people achieve their individual goals which will eventually help the organization achieve their desired outcome. Working with a team is inevitable even to an individual who prefer to work alone.

Working teams are everywhere. Teams are found in the academe. These teams write, review, and revise curriculum goals and set up strategies to implement them and assess their effectiveness. Law enforcement personnel set up task forces to coordinate efforts towards their common goals. Associations form teams and committees to generate ideas, strategies and set up positive synergy through coordinated effort that will ensure efficiency and effectiveness. In the field of medicine, teams of Doctors with various specialty and sub-specialty joined by other support staffs are formed when they tackle a very challenging case. In these teams, the overall performance would sum up greater than each individual’s performances.

The value of teamwork is also very evident in government from the local to the national to the international levels. However, the effectiveness of these teams are influenced by both internal and external forces and factors. Internal factors include clear purpose/goals or objectives, informal and casual, collaborative and participatory, open communication,

shared or participatory leadership, consensus building, and clearly defined roles & task assignments. This is how success can be made sure. External factors include outside forces coming from individuals and other stakeholders.

As a rule, teamwork means working together to achieve a common goal and each individual plays a cooperative effort in the process. It is evident anywhere. It is indispensable to be successful in this globalized economic and social order. Teamwork efforts are necessary in successfully building super structures like the longest bridge, the tallest building, and even

in simple construction like those of a residential house, road construction, construction of a factory, or any structure.

In the process, each individual experience a sense of trust and accomplishment that you gain after you succeed. Along the way, relationships and friendships are formed between and among team members. While it teaches a person the sense of responsibility, teamwork also teaches each individual to be caring, sharing and always be aware of the needs of each other. Teamwork also means believing that each individual can deliver their goods successfully.

In contrast to teamwork and team building is an autocratic leadership which tries to bring in ideas to the team. However, for a team to be successful, a strong leadership is necessary to influence the behavior of each team members. Authoritarian leadership could be the driving force which should motivate and force the whole group to complete the required task. This person could be other than the leader itself. The leader usually exudes charisma that inspires fellow members realize the essentiality of being one to achieve the goal while the team work out cohesively. This person is someone with moral authority, rather than a formal authority. This person should have strong self principles which should strictly be followed by him, and these should be for the interest of other people. The team should follow the principle Of “ALL FOR ONE RATHER THEN ONE FOR ALL”.

W hite Coat Ceremony, according to Segen’s Medical Dictionary, is a rite-of-passage ritual at which medicine-related students pledge commitment

to their future patients, then receive their symbolic white coats as a sign of commitment to compassion and excellence, was commenced by two colleges, Dentistry and Pharmacy, in Manila Central University last August 3 and September 5, 2012, respectively.

The White Coat Ceremony of the College of Dentistry last August 3 was held at the Tanchoco Auditorium, organized by Dr. Noime Garcia, and Dr. Maria Alicia T. Camacho. The event started with a performance headed by Dr. Camacho, Vahid Sedaghat and Seyed Mahdi Khodaparast followed by the speech delivered by Dr. Eric G. Alforja, Dean of the college of Dentistry.

Meanwhile, the College of Pharmacy spearheaded the first ever White Coat Ceremony intended for the 2nd year, 3rd year, and 4th year pharmacy students last September 5, 2012 which was held at the Centennial Gymnasium. The event was organized by the different student organizations headed by the Pharmacy Student Council and the Faculty.

Last September 14, 2012 at the Tanchoco Auditorium, MCU Scholars Recognition Day was held with more than one hundred attendees ranging from Awardees’ Scholars, Parents, MCU Administrator, and Deans of various departments.

The event was organized for the purpose of certain requests to see all scholars on the different colleges, have a meet and greet session with one another and finally meet their benefactor. They are the scholars who are Academically Excellent in their particular fields of study and acts as a model to inspire other students and become an instrument for

change in the society.The event formally started as the MCU Chorale

performed before the attendees, followed by the welcoming remarks delivered by the Dean of the Student Affairs, Professor Lourdes Cruzat.

There was also a video presentation about the different activities held in MCU. Among these are the Free Day Friday, Mardi Gras, and Foundation Day which allowed the students to unwind and enjoy their liberty as a student. Moreover, an inspirational message was also given by the President of MCU, Dr. Aristotle T. Malabanan, emphasizing the purpose

of the Free Day Friday and that is to bring out the students’ potential and not be wasted from bad vices. He also expressed his happiness for the great achievements of the scholars.

Furthermore, the Distribution of Certificates of Recognition was awarded by Dr. Aristotle T. Malabanan, Mrs. Lydia L. Taganguin (VP for Academic Affairs), and Dr. Renato C. Tanchoco (VP for External Affairs) with the assistance of the Deans and Staffs of the different colleges. The program ended with the closing remarks delivered by Mrs. Lydia L. Taganguin.

E very journey has their own beginning that leads to new tests

of character, skills, and passion for a chosen profession, which takes its own obligation to every people. Behind each step is a circumstance that will unleash a person’s deepest strengths. But one of the most exciting episodes of each journey is when a person sees himself getting closer to that goal.

As for a Second Year Nursing student, one of the most defining moments of success is when s/he is able to attain Capping and Pinning that unlocks him or her of the opportunity to apply what s/he continuously learned in the school to hospital setting. With this said, the College of Nursing has yet again commenced the Capping and Pinning and Candle Lighting Ceremony last August 3, 2012, at the MCU Centennial Gymnasium

The celebration was attended by 54 sophomores, who were able to receive a prestigious honor in joining a milestone for nursing students. Furthermore, a Certificate of Recognition was also presented by Dr. Aristotle T. Malabanan, assisted by Dr. Lydia L. Taganquin and Dean Lina A. Salarda was awarded to Ranzelle Jean C. Francisco and Doreen Faye V. Navarro.

Under the supervision of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) through the leadership of the Languages and Humanities Department, MCU

marked the celebration of “Buwan ng Wika” last August 23, 2012 at the MCU Centennial Gymnasium.

With the theme “Lakas ng Wikang Filipino, Tatag ng Pagka-Pilipino” headed by Professor Elenita Bartolome-Reyes, the celebration endeavors to deepen the spirit of nationalism and giving of importance to the Filipino language which brings together the nation. Moreover, it aimed to enrich the culture that we, Filipinos, are born into.

In line with the valuable celebration, some activities were also organized such as “Pagsulat ng Sanaysay” which was held last August 6-10 (Indoor process) and “Sayawit Competition” and “Tarpaulin Making Contest”- both activities were held last August 23.

The Sayawit Competition winners

are the following: 3rd placer- PH 1-2, 2nd placer- PH 1-3 and the 1st placer-MT 1-4. All winners received certificates, medals and trophies.

The university community all joined together in celebrating the lavish successful event in strengthening and valuing our native tongue, enriching our culture and embracing the purpose, richness and essence of nationalism that unites the success of the nation.

UP MANILA – Health Justice Philippines, a non-stock, non-profit organization that aims to empower the Filipino republic in making healthy choices by bridging the gap between health and law, joined forces with the University of the Philippines Manila Debate Circle in upholding its 1st Public Health Debate last May 19-20, 2012.

Student delegates from metropolitan universities, including our very own Rembert Hans Fernandez from the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) who served as one of the core judges for the clash of debaters from various programs.

Health Justice Philippines aims to merge medical professionals and law officers to formulate a concrete and reliable knowledge where people could relate. They are driven to the goals of preventing health risks, promoting healthier lifestyles and promoting equity in access to health services. The organization also intends to raise public awareness about health promotion. The organization calls upon advocates who are willing to spread the advocacy of putting an end to the ever-growing tobacco industry and death rates in the Philippines caused by tobacco use.

The two-day assembly offered a seminar proudly exhibited by the UPM esteemed panel of lecturers about universal health care, health promotion and the status of health care in the country. Keynote speakers, Mr. Ralph Emerson Degollacion, project coordinator of Health Justice Phils; and Mr. Ulysses Dorotheo, M.D., F.P.A.O., project director of Southeast Asia Tobacco Alliance lectured the grounds for their siege with the tobacco industry, the alarming rise of fatalities in the country due to Tobacco consumption and a maneuver for passing a bill in the Senate regarding a price increase in the products, which theoretically would impair the production of tobacco for lack of demands.

The seminars showcased in the assembly inspired debaters from different universities. The debate evidently showed vast opinions and point of views from their fields of study. Mr. Fernandez’s participation in the debate proved that MCU can keep up with the best.

HEALTH JUSTICE BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN HEALTH AND LAW

Last September 12, 2012, at the MCU Centennial Gym- Function Room, the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) through the Languages and Humanities Department (LHD) facilitated and sponsored an intercollegiate Literature Quiz Bee (LQB) with the purpose of encouraging and promoting the intellectual faculties of the youth through friendly competitions in Philippine Literature and inculcating the importance of Filipino culture.

The contest underwent three rounds of questions: easy, average and difficult consisting of ten questions for each round. The participants were grouped into teams consisting of three members each. Professor Margaret Sumaway, faculty member of CAS-LHD, served as the Chair

of the contest.During the time of the contest, all teams from their respective

colleges gave all their best to provide correct answers to the questions being asked. According to Prof. Ronald S. Go, English 4 Professor of MT 2-2 (grabbed two out of three top places), “MedTech students were very consistent in winning the Literature Quiz Bee for two consecutive years.” Sir Go also added that he’s very glad and blessed that most of his handled classes won in the said contest and he’s looking forward for another set of MedTech students who are able to be on top places again by the next competition’s time.

In the end, the LQB was triumphantly won by the College of Medical Technology who bagged the top three titles. Katrina Cunanan, Mary Grace Furugganan, and Jerylle Claire Alcantara came in 2nd place. As for Suzaine Kricia Chua, Maria Joanne Dente, and Jeramy Kahlil Liwag, their team came in 1st place and last but not the least, the team of Andy Art Clement Decretales MT 2-2, yours truly and Cassandra Mae Lim ended up as the champion.

astonishing efforts of Centralino Student Leaders Foundation, Inc

(CSLFI) under the supervision of Mr. Mark Ross I. Rubio (CSLFI President) and Prof. Lourdes F. Cruzat (Chairman, Board of Trustees).

T h e c e l e b r a t i o n provided an e n t h u s i a s t i c opening remark by Prof. Cruzat who elaborated and inculcated the motivating objectives and essence of the said activity. It was followed

by a glamorous Ribbon Cutting Ceremonies led by Dr. Aristotle T. Malabanan (MCU President), Dr. Lydia L. Taganguin (VP for Academic Affairs) together with Mr. Rubio and Prof. Cruzat.

Afterwards, the official start of fashionable Runway Show began with a captivating catwalk stage setting, talented student singers, gorgeous student models and the marking display entitled, “Fashion Forward Centralino Runway”. The highlights show off the presentation of varying items designed with MCU- Centralino prints such as t-shirts, jackets, bags (buffet and body types), umbrellas and other useful stuffs to be purchased at reasonable cost at the LRC Ground Floor, Admission Office’s waiting area.

Furthermore, a raffle activity was also done in line to the success of the official opening of the souvenir shop. The university community had a great time and one of a kind experience in witnessing another genre of valuable legacy that symbolized our identities as a proud bona fide Centralino and embracing the good things that our Alma Mater has to offer to all its beneficiaries.

A two-day Computer Literacy Workshop was spearheaded by the team up of the University Integrated Community Extension Programs and Services (UNICEPS) and the College of Computer Studies last May 31 and June 1, 2012 at the CBA Building.

The coordinators of the event were Ms. Nina Ciela Florentino from the College of Computer Studies (CCS) faculty and Ms. Maria Dolores Evangelista, UNICEPS director from the College of Medical Technology (CMT). The beneficiaries of the workshop were the youth of Barangay 81.

The objectives of the workshop include teaching the youth basic education and the proper use of computers. The event was led by CCS Student Council President John Louie Nepomuceno, with the support and assistance of the faculty, high school teacher Ms. Agustina Lapuz and other student volunteers.

The workshop offered a lecture tackling basic mathematical operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, its methods like criss-cross, compliments and finger computations and the basics of Microsoft Word and MS Paint. The lessons instilled in the minds of the youth will be an essential tool for them to utilize in the future.

With the continuous assistance of Computer Studies in community works, a lot more projects are expected to be organized.

Friends for Keeps?How can we find true friendship in

this fast and selfish world? This world is not permanent and our life in this world is temporary like a thin string tied between two edges. In this time how can we find people who are true and trustworthy? How can we find someone who will accept and appreciate for who we are?

Friendship involves recognition or familiarity with another’s personality. Friends must share likes and dislikes, views, passions of their life and world. This gives a lot of recognition to the person whom we need to have friendship with.

How can we recognize potential friendship? There are a lot of signs which include mutual desire for companionship and perhaps a common bond in some topics similar to each other. Beyond that a genuine and mutual friendship involves a shared sense of caring and concern, a desire to see one another grow and develop, and a hope for each other to succeed in all aspects of life. True friendship involves action: doing something for someone else while expecting nothing in return, sharing thoughts and feelings without fear of judgment or negative criticism.

TRUST and ACCOUNTABILITYTrue friendship involves relationships.

Those mutual attributes mentioned above become the foundation in which recognition transpire into a relationship. Many people say, “Oh, he/ she is a good

friend of mine,” yet they never spend time with that “good friend”. Every relationship requires time and effort: time to get to know each other, time to build shared memories, time to invest in each other’s emotional and spiritual growth.

Trust is essential in all kinds of relationship either friendship or love for God, family, friends, or someone special to us. Let’s face the fact that we all need someone with whom we can share our lives, thoughts, feelings, and frustrations. We need to be able to share our deepest secrets with someone whom we trust, without worrying that those secrets will end up on the internet especially in facebook or twitter the next da. It can become a big news that spreads in the entire campus! Gossips spread like fire in the forest. Failing to be trustworthy with those intimate secrets can destroy a relationship in a hurry. Without these, we often felt so betrayed, left out and lonely. If they really like you they will respect who you are even if you are not around them, no backstabbing, no negative thoughts and no turning away.

True friendship requires certain accountability factors.

A real friend will encourage, inspire and motivate you in a good and right way, doesn’t do an act of selfishness and doesn’t use other people just for the sake of their own happiness. Forgive one another where there has been an offense. Genuine friendship can be tested during

times of pain and struggle. We still love and accept them no matter what and we always want the best for them.

Real and true friendship involves freedom of choice, accountability, truth, and forgiveness. Real friendship looks at the heart, not just the ‘packaging’. Genuine friendship loves for love’s sake, not just for what it can get in return. True friendship is both challenging and exciting. It takes risks, it overlooks faults, and it loves unconditionally, hence it also involves being honest even though it may hurt. Genuine relationship comes from God.

Relationships in real life involve different levels of friendships, love, etc and that’s okay. People stick closer than a brother or sister and in that order for one to be a friend, one must show themselves to be friendly and approachable. The question is: what type of person do you desire to be? Just be who you are, don’t pretend to be somebody else just to look ‘cool’ and ‘in’ to the society. Don’t let others love or like you with your mask on your face. Better to be accepted with your true colors rather than pretending and someday it will reveal who really you are.

When we’ve offended someone – whether by breaking the trust or by speaking the truth with love we may risk losing that friend. We must be careful not to break their trust. But when we’re not speaking the truth it will cause greater hurt and pain in our friends’ life, we must be willing to sacrifice our pride, our needs and ourselves for the person we love most especially if they’re worth the pain.

Voyage towards the breakthrough is just like travelling the sub-zero tundra without giving a damn on whatever things it would take for a person to change and reach the point where he can finally say, “Hey…I’ve reached it. I’ve reached my breakthrough.”

To be able to come up with a goal and a strong will to fuel the desire of achieving it one day is comparable to a person who is willing to say his last farewell on the powdery paradise which had isolated him from facing reality, a reality which delves on people striving for a significant place in this world. And in order for a person to secure a place in this competitive world, he needs to have a definite goal in which he is willing to give everything what he’s got. A beautiful breakthrough requires a 100% effort. That’s how it works. It always has been like that. Without effort, this so-called breakthrough will disappear instantly and that will result to the negative vibes being drawn in to the person who lost his drive to fight for his dream. And in actuality, most of the people experience this negativity. The thought of not believing that they can do what others can is the most dominant characteristic they have. That is why many of us are suffering from bitter experiences and fall to a life-sucking abyss, a punishment which we tend to put on ourselves, a deadly inconspicuous killer, one in which we all know as depression. This one factor which is considered as one of the devil’s work is a merciless killer of those people who doesn’t have anything on their minds to fight for. People who have lost their will to keep on striving and turned gray due to hopelessness.

Now, in connection with this, a goal is something that is made in every person’s mind. Thinking of it has created many reactions from different people. Some would say that a goal is made once a person finds the thing or activity

where his enthusiasm is. While some is referring to the reason why a goal has to be set by each people and that is because for him to have a clear path to follow. It’s a matter of choosing whether he would go for the path between the road towards success or the road towards damnation. Furthermore, this so called “goal” is something that has to be taken seriously because without it, nothing will push us forward to keep on fighting. We’ll be nothing but an empty shell.

Going to an adventure seeking for the transformation of the goal from imagination to reality is a difficult adventure to take. Yes, it is. But, no matter how difficult the consequences are, it must not stop the person to keep on going. He must be ready to break all the glaciers and frozen lakes that may come his way. He must be willing to walk even on the thinnest ice knowing that it might crack any minute but still continue to move towards the terminal point of the race which is our goal, even though he is fully aware on what may and may not happen while on this journey. He must be ready to draw out his sword of courage and shield of determination. With this said, he’ll be a strong contender for the game of pursuing a goal and finally reaching his breakthrough.

In addition to that, it is true that the best enemy we shall face along this journey is ourselves. Some part of us holds all the negativity that would make us stop and just avoid doing all the things that could make our dreams come true. For example, a person tends to compare himself to another person and if he finds something that he doesn’t have but the other person has, he would end up stuck in a state of depression. Another would be the case wherein he would always doubt himself and never had any confidence or awareness of his capacity as an individual to work. The tendency is for him to say

that he can’t do it or that the work will only fail if he is the one to lead the job. Also, when a person is too self-centered, there will be an occurrence of aiming for perfection which would lead to the creation of hypocrisy, a situation wherein he minds everything another person would say about him, a moment of always self-analyzing and deleting all the unwanted and undesirable traits just for him to be accepted by the people around him. All these pessimistic views are the deadly enemies one would face in the journey towards the breakthrough. It’s an unavoidable truth. Yes, it is the truth but just because you already have a little hint of what striving for your goal and reaching your breakthrough means, you, as a person, do not have to be a sissy and just stop in the middle of it. Because if you stop and realize in the end that it was a bad move, you’ll have your regrets stuck in your mind forever. So, just accept things but never regret. It’ll just be a nuisance and a heck of a burden. Sometimes, you have to go for it. Chase it. Reach it. And embrace it.

Moreover, we must learn how to handle them coolly. Learn how to exhale the stress and all the negativity, that way you’ll be able to breathe easily and won’t become unglued about the situation. Learn how to cheer up. Cry whenever you feel you might break down. It always helps because if you just keep it inside of you, you’ll easily break. Crying is not a work of a coward. It is actually the bravest way of letting go of all the burdens that are pulling you back. Remember, life is just like a string of cloudy days. There will come a time when the clouds would cover all the light from the sun and darken our surrounding but it’s only for a little bit of time. Make sure that after you cry, you have to dry your damp eyes and be as colorful as the rainbow. Cover that lack of color in your heart and let the colors of the rainbow flow in your veins.

Marahil kung isa kang bagong graduate ng High school at nag iisip ka ng unibersidad na iyong papasukan o pumipili ng propesyon, iisipin mong “hmmm...madali lang naman siguro ang kolehiyo.” Yung tipong natutuwa ka sa mga kinekwento ng mga kaibigan mo at sinasabi nilang madaming vacant na oras, maagang nag didismiss ang prof, pwede ka mag cutting classes, madalas kang makapag bubulakbol, makapaglaro ng DOTA o Billiards, mag malling, makipag inuman sa tanghaling tapat at maraming mga gawaing pwedeng maisipan ng isang estudyante. Sa katunayan, oo, malaya mong magagawa ito. Pero ito ang isang Malupit na katanungan... Kaya mo bang panindigan ang pinasok mong sistema ng pagiging estudyante?. Ang inaakala mong Buhay sa Kolehiyo, ay hindi tulad ng iyong inaasahan.

Ang buhay kolehiyo ay hindi isang biro, ngunit di ko lubos maisip na ang ilang mga mag aaral, ay tila ba “CHILL CHILL lang” sa pagpasok nila sa Eskwela. Pagkagising sa umaga, kakain ng almusal, maliligo, mag bibihis, hihingi ng allowance kay Inay at papasok sa unibersidad. Oo, pumapasok sila... pero masasabi mo bang Tunay ang ginagawa nilang

pag pasok? Bato bato sa langit, ang tamaan ay wag masyadong halata. Ang ilang estudyante, ay nagiging parasitiko. Yung tipong may asignatura sa Mathematics, tapos kokopyahin na lang bigla sa kaklase, o kaya naman, gagawa ng project, tapos copy paste lang sa Google at Wikipedia ang gagawin. O kaya magka-cutting classes dahil saksakan na, barilan pa ng boring ang subject. Nasasayang lamang ang panahon at salaping ginamit ng ating mga magulang. Nandito tayo sa Eskwela, para mahubog ang ating mga talento, mahasa ang ating kaisipan, at maihanda tayo sa pagpasok natin sa Tunay na mundo kung saan, maraming oportunidad at posibilidad na hinihintay lamang tayo na kumilos para makamtan iyon. Pero kung pa EASY EASY KA lang, at di mo pinag tutuunan ng Pansin ang Edukasyon, ano na lamang ang gagawin mo pag nakatapos ka, Naka tengga ka, Nga Nga?!

Sa aspeto ng Edukasyon, Matatalino talaga tayo, madali tayong matuto, at maka-pick up pag nag le-lesson si prof, pero aanhin natin ang talino, kung tayo’y mga tamad naman. Yung tipong pinagpapabukas ang mga asignatura at proyektong deadline na sa makalawa.

Remember, Mediocrity should never be an Option. Tinatamad kang mag aral, tapos magka-cramming ka para sa Exams. Ito ba ang magtataguyod ng Bandera ng Manila Central University, mga tamad na tao?

Katamaran, ito ay ilan sa mga sanhi ng di pag unlad ng isang estudyante. Ang Edukasyon sa Kolehiyo ay sistematikong binuo upang makapag bunga ng magandang resulta sa katangian ng isang mag aaral. Minsan aking narinig, “Anong relevance ng PE sa programang Medical Technology or Computer Studies?” Sa una, may punto ang taong nagsabi noon. Aanhin mo nga naman ang Subject na PE sa Med tech or Info tech? Bakit, kailangan mo pa bang MAG TUMBLING sa harap ng mga pasyente mo? Hindi lang natin namamalayan, pinapalakas tayo ng PE sa pangangatawan, isa itong paghahanda upang ang katawan natin ay malabanan ang Pisikal at mental na traumang haharapin natin kapag nasa OJT or Internship na tayo. Kapag tayo ay tinatamad, nawawalan tayo ng mga pagkakataong sanayin ang mga sarili natin. Ganoon din sa ibang subjects natin, di man totally related sa mga courses natin, may maibibigay itong leksyon sa atin na magagamit natin sa mas mataas na antas ng pag aaral. Nasa atin kung anong leksyon ang mahuhugot natin dun. Ang Kolehiyo ay isang Training Camp, natututo tayo at nakakakuha ng experiences. Pag tinamad tayo sa pag attend ng Klase, o tinamad sa Research or review, mahihirapan tayong makipag sabayan sa mga kaklase natin. Tapos, pag na-BITTER ka sa kinalabasan ng grades, kanino mo ibubunton ang Sisi, sa mga professors? Oo, paminsan minsan,

sa side ng mga professor ang pagkukulang, pero ating tandaan, na obligasyon natin ang alamin ang mga bagay na dapat pag tuunan ng pansin. Kaya nga tayo may LRC, Computer Labs, at learning facilities, makatutulong ito sa atin, pero kung Ikaw Mismo, ay nabibwisit sa nakakapagod na lakaran sa LRC, ikaw ang kawawa, No Pain, No Gain!.

Puro na lang tayo Reklamo, “sh*t ang Hirap ng Organic Chem!”. Oo, mahirap talaga ang mga subjects naten. Parte ito ng ating kurso. Ito ang makakatulong sa atin, pag tayo’y nagtatrabaho na. Pero kung Sa SIMULA pa lang ay nag pursige ka, e di hindi ka nahihirapan ngayon, o kaunting hirap ang natatamasa mo ngayon. Partida, BACHELOR’S DEGREE pa lang ang mga kurso natin, what more pa kaya kung Masteral, Doctoral or Medisina ang ating kukunin?

Ang mga mauunang taon sa ating mga kurso, ay binubuo ng mga aralin sa larangan ng Sining at Agham. Di man konektado sa ating kurso, ito ang makakabuo ng magandang sistema ng Pag aaral. Ating tandaan, hindi ilalagay ang subject na yan kung wala tayong mapupulot na aral na siyang makatutulong satin sa mas komplikado at mahirap na aralin.

Isa lamang ang mensaheng aking nais iparating. Ang pagpili sa dalawang Landas. Ang landas na puno ng Hirap at pasakit, at ang Landas ng Layaw at pagwa-walang bahala. Bilang isang Estudyante, ating mararanasan ang pag hihirap, ang pag pupuyat, pagsasakripisyo at pagpwersa ng ating mga kakayahan. Kung ating mararanasan ang hirap sa simula pa lamang, TUMATAG ka! Dahil wala pa ito sa kalingkingan ng mga mas mahihirap na bahagi

ng ating landas na tinatahak. Ang pag sisipag sa pag aaral, ang siyang magtuturo sa atin maging matiyaga, matiisin, mahusay, at dedikado sa mga gawaing ating hilig at obligadong gawin. Kung atin namang tatahakin ang landas ng Layaw at pag wawalang bahala, hindi tayo matututo. Hindi tayo masasanay sa hirap ng buhay kolehiyo. Kung hindi tayo magse-seryoso, at ipagpapatuloy lang natin ang mga pangit na halimbawang itinala sa unang talata, hindi tayo uunlad bilang mga estudyante. Nasasayang lang ang tuition fees, lakas ng ating mga magulang, at panahon na kung maaari sana ay maaga nating iginugol sa pag aaral.

Nasa Atin ang desisyon kung anong landas ang ating tatahakin. Ito lamang ang ikintil sa ating mga kaisipan. Ang tagumpay na ating matatanggap ay mas masarap kung ito’y ating pinag paguran. Kumabaga, eto yung rewarding feeling sa atin, pag nakatapos tayo ng mga gawain sa mga leksyon. Hanggat di pa huli ang lahat, simulan na nating maging masipag at matiyaga sa pag aaral, dahil ang hirap na dinadanas natin ay wala pa sa Sukdulan. Kapag ating ginawa ito, tunay tayong magiging mahusay na mga Indibidwal. Ang mga mag tataguyod ng bandera ng bansa.

Ang Landas ng Paghihirap, ay parang isang baku-bakong kalsada, masakit sa paa, batuhan, pero sa Dulo ng daan, nandoon ang Ginhawa. Ang landas ng Layaw at Pagwa-walang Bahala, nasa dulo ang pag hihirap.

So ngayon, magiging masipag ka na ba sa pag aaral? Mag rereklamo ka pa ba? Handa ka bang bantasin ang Landas na iyong pipiliin?


Our Alma Mater serves as an avenue in fostering our intellectual and practical skills academically to the fullest. It hones us to learn the basics up to the latest trends and the nature of our chosen endeavor/course to work out for. Hard times of learning,

gaining mistakes, pushing to submit late requirements and brain-squeezing practical and intellectual examinations will undoubtedly rule over. But after all, the sweet taste of success will take over as we oversee and experience the product of worthwhile hardships as we entered to a bigger world, a world of reality where being competitive is a great edge from the others, the edge we absorbed from our Alma Mater.

An interview was provided by a former MCU foreign student-graduate from Pre-Dent to Dentistry course proper, Dr. Eshan, who shared his living testimonies on how he is doing well in his profession in Iran and how fortunate and satisfied he was for being a product of MCU where he gained all his productive knowledge and skills and the valuable application of all these that helped him a lot.

The interview tackled the concerns that in Iran, every foreign student who studied and graduated from other countries should finish a supplementary course. This supplementary course was approved to last for two semesters to be divided in the process of taking 12 units of further specialization courses in the first semester while a thesis and practical in the second semester.

Dr. Eshan successfully finished this additional requirement in Bu Ali University of Hamadan City to finally acquire the chance to practice his profession in his own country. Presently, he has a clinic in Kerman City. He talked about the competitive knowledge and skills he gained from MCU compared to other Iranians who studied from other universities local and international countries abroad.

According to him, “The MCU students who studied there should not be worried, because they can do it. Iran universities have a bad impression to students who come from other countries because they are not good in theoretical and practical studies. The MCU students are beyond them. The knowledge we get in MCU is enough to have a competition with other Iranians who came from other countries. Some other countries which have a good economy and even popular focus on the paper they want to give as a license. And the students who want to study there are not aware what is happening there in reality. To me, being an MCU student, I was lucky to enroll in this school to earn more than which is expected. I was satisfied in Hamadan City. I was good enough in practical because of what I learned in MCU, in fact supplementary semester was not so difficult for me,” he gladly explained.

The interview proved the fact that MCU students wherever they may be are capable of standing out from the rest for being instilled with valuable knowledge and being well-trained to be competitive enough in meeting the demands of professionalism’s nature of work and growth to become productive citizens.

REMINISCING


The human brain is furnished naturally. Studies and Statistics proved and revealed that we only use ten percent (10%) of our potential brainpower. However, many psychologists concluded that in the ten percent of our brainpower, we actually use only around four percent (4%) of it.

Upon assessing this case, we seem and appear to let 96% of our brainpower be totally wasted and left unutilized. Definitely, there are still possibilities in proposing, conducting and formulating of new set of concepts and theories about the brainpower phenomena that will greatly contribute to its full potentials. In understanding how the human brain works, we can reveal our brain power to its possible optimum levels.

Here are the processes of manifestations: The average adult human brain has about 12 to 15 billion nerve cells. The human nervous system which is controlled by the brain begins its

development 20 days after conception. Five weeks after conception, brain development begins. Eight weeks from conception, the first of two brain spurts starts to develop.

At this point, the brain, about one-half (1/2) inch long, represents half of the total length of the fetus. Then, the neuroblasts begin to grow. Neuroblasts are embryonic cells that later on become neurons or brain nerve cells.

At this stage, neuroblasts develop at a staggering pace, usually increasing at the rate of several thousands per minute.

Twelve weeks after conception, the tiny fetus is adding neurons at a rate of 2,000 per second.

About 20 weeks after conception or one week before birth, the human embryo has developed its entire nervous system with 12 to 15 billion neurons.

Ten weeks before birth, each neuron begins to send out numerous thin fibers to make potential connections with other neurons.

A powerful brain is largely a function of the number of neurons and the richness of their interconnectedness.

If each neuron by itself can make thousands of connections, the potential number of interconnections in the brain runs into trillions.

Many of these connections are made before the age of five. The more the brain is stimulated, the richer the connections and the higher the mental ability.

The human head grows in physical size fourfold after birth. By age five, the skull is 90% of its adult size.

Full adult size is reached by age ten. The brain now weighs about three pounds. This is two percent (2%) of the body weight, yet the brain requires 20% of the total oxygen supply of the body.

As students, we are being tested to use the full potential and capacity of our brainpower. Through undergoing series of activities and examinations needed to be passed, and in order to attain our varying goals while studying, it can greatly affect the way we manage and deal with situations in our future endeavors and undertakings in life. We are trained and stimulated to think deeper and create wise decisions and choices especially in the academe. With perseverance and hard work, and of course with proper care for our health, it will intensify the intellectual abilities we possess. Through these exercises, we are able to know and measure the strengths and weaknesses of our brainpower that will give us all the understanding and desire to learn more for self-improvement and self-fulfillment purposes.

HOW POWERFUL OUR BRAIN IS

Manila Central University, an academic institution devoted in providing quality education and best services to the Student Body, had undergone major transformations all throughout the centuries. With the humble origins of the university, from a review class for Pharmacy board Exam established in 1904 to the Philippines’ one of the Pillars of health sciences and professional programs. The university, with their fullest efforts in living up to their missions and visions; continually innovates and redesigns their foundations to cope up with fast-paced and ever-changing demands of the society.

With the long run of MCU, and with the Modifications they underwent to suit the needs of the Student Body, are there some other keys they need to improve?

On an interview to some MCU students, they shared their views regarding MCU’s need for improvements.

“In terms of Education, the members of the faculty in each college are excellent teachers. They provide excellent performance that I like because I learn so much under their supervision. But in terms of facilities, they can do BETTER. For example in the Business Administration Building, they could have provided air conditioners in the rooms. And in the food court, especially in the LRC, they could add more tables and chairs. They just have to improve more in the facilities.” – Aileen Cu, Business Administration

“They should improve the facilities like the laboratories and others. I like the programs that they organize however they should improve the information release, because some students aren’t aware of it. Perhaps, providing more efficient and reliable source of info that is able to reach all the MCU students should be created. This should include a faster way of reaching the Student body, either by posting updates, reminders, and announcements on a place where all the MCU students have an access to, somewhat like the MCU website.” – Jonalyn Mae Delos Reyes, Medical Technology

“I think that there is always room for improvements. They lack in providing essential facilities like the laboratories and its equipments. Renovation in the current buildings can make MCU more effective in providing a friendly and safe environment conducive for learning. Repairing the damages to the old buildings and fixing outdated amenities will decrease the chances of students having a difficult time in studying.” – Lorlee Jane Pagaoa, Pharmacy

“One thing I’d like MCU to improve is the technological aspect. We’re all now living in an industrial world wherein we are competitively striving for the improvement of technology. If we want to be in the top performing schools, we must improve our facilities. I would like to suggest a STUDENT PORTAL for MCU, for easy access of grades, enrollment processes, and easy identification of students. I would like also to have an ONLINE PUBLIC ACCESS CATALOGUE (OPAC), for easy access of information and availability of resources in our LRC. I think, these things are needed to improve the quality of education, not by teaching students to be lazy, but giving students more time to do other interesting things.” – Carla Jane Martin, Nursing

There is always a room for improvements, considering that MCU encounters some problems that could hinder their missions to be fulfilled; the Administration will not be stopped in providing what is of best interest. MCU is devoted in giving what the Student Body really needs.

Answering to the pleas of the Student Body is not an easy duty to take. It takes time, intelligent planning, critical thinking and many other decisions that they need to consider. But for now, we should utilize what we have now. For MCU paved the way with opportunities and new openings as years pass by.

A Fight to the Death… until one Victorious Champion remains. The Hunger Games, a young adult themed novel in 2008 that made its debut in the world screen in 2012 was written by an American writer named Suzanne Collins. It features a story of the Dystopian-post apocalyptic country of Panem. The Post-Northern America ruled by the wealthy Elites of the Capitol, has the full control in the poor provinces or so called “Districts”. As a formal Truce, and sanction between the Capitol and the Districts, for their failure in an uprising; the Districts are to send their children, ranging from 12 to 18 years of age to participate in a public “Reaping”. This lottery determines one courageous boy and girl to represent their District as “Tributes”. These Tributes are placed into the Custody of the Capitol, to train and prepare for the games, where they will be placed in a public arena, as they venture in the path of Survival, Gore and Murder…until one Tribute was left standing. 24 Tributes, two from each District are to fight their way to salvation. The winner is spoiled with riches, a reward in winning the Games.

The Novel stars a 16 year old Katniss Everdeen, a young teenage girl hunter from District 12. She volunteered to be the Female Tribute, in exchange for her sister’s participation in the 74th Annual Hunger Games. She was placed in custody with Peeta Mellark, the male tribute from District 12, to prepare in the upcoming battle. The game is controlled by the Game makers, a staff assigned in manipulating the environment, weather and biotic components of the arena. They can fully alter the seasons, natural disasters and the length of Day and Night. During the games, the “sponsors” can send in their donations. These gifts, be it a knife, a bread or match sticks can make a huge difference between Life and Death.

With the strong and compelling message of the story, it hereby shows a fact that we are living in the world, paved with obstacles and traps. That in some times…the odds are not always in our favor. Sometimes, we are on the top of

the game, there were moments that we are under it. Haven’t we learned enough already? After the surges of unlucky chances of Fate, we are still crippled and struggling to stand up from the ruins that happened to be the strong foundations of this country.

In reality, the unfortunate turn of events, that left us paralyzed and broken, came from Man’s own negligence to the nature, to himself, and to his country.

Negligence to the Nature. We took control of the environment. We abused and deteriorated forests and seas. The continuous usage of harmful chemicals and progressing pollution bore the unimaginable disasters that left houses torn down, lands flooded and victims dead. The Game turned against its controllers. God gave us all these magnificent scenery, a priceless treasure and yet we had the guts to disfigure it and overuse these wonders. It is our responsibility to take good care of the environment. But what did we do? We neglected Mother Nature. So in return, she brings forth her Wrath to the entire country. Many places were flooded, rivers and dikes overflowed, mountains eroded, farmlands dried too much. These are only a few of the worst Mother Nature can give.

Negligence to oneself. How could a person neglect himself? What is he, an imbecile? The mere fact that a person would be passive enough, and let him be swallowed by the negative influences in the society is Negligence. Negligence to oneself bores laziness. We refuse to take action. We can never be successful if we continue this kind of attitude. We live in the world that is healing, but the process slows down, for man is too lazy to make a difference for himself. If we really want to have the CHANGE in this society, then we should start it from ourselves first. Imagine, if we enter the Hunger Games and we became so lazy in the preparation, let ourselves be spoiled by short-lived indulgence, we will be the first ones to be slaughtered. To win the games, we should rely on our strengths and assets to outwit, outplay and outlast.

Negligence to the Country. It is depressing to see the country had suffered enough, and yet some people are too naive to think about others. They also refuse to take the lead in helping the needy and poor. Yes! We witness the so-called Bayanihan Spirit, but when do we see this, when the raging cold waters are entering our homes, when the community is in a fiery Inferno, or a serious holocaust killing millions of innocent lives? What we need is Unity, Camaraderie and Compassion. For helping one another in rising from the ruins can throw the country into the heights of greatness. We will not do this gesture in times of calamity or emergency only. We should help one another, in every time if possible.

By reading the book or watching the movie, one can see the protagonist’s ways of survival, interaction and instincts in playing Hunger Games. Katniss made alliances with her District 12 partner, Peeta Mellark and District 11’s Rue. She fought her way against the natural disasters and opponents that is ready to butcher anyone that comes along their way. With her Strength and courage, she crossed the limits and made her and Peeta the victors of the 74th Annual Hunger Games.

By removing Negligence in our lives, we can accomplish everything. Of course, by the start, we should begin by modifying our ways of life. We must take control of it; strive for the change to have the life that is best for us and our families. Secondly, we should not be blinded from the truth that this country is still struggling and wants to break free from poverty. A FEW already took part in achieving Change, and as Citizens of this country, we must be at the same phase. We must help one another. If we don’t help each other, who would? We must grow in numbers that is enough to bring forth forces determined to assist the nation in rising from the ashes.

We hold the decision, it is our choice whether we continue to neglect the screams and silent plights of this wounded nation, or we start to make a difference to heal this nation from the scars of the past and fresh wounds of the present. We are the TRIBUTES, we must be solidified to achieve greater things; an Alliance of the Determined.

The world is a giant arena, and we will not survive it if we remain to be the same. Let’s be optimistic in winning against all odds. Are you willing to be the nation’s Tribute? Are the Odds in your Favor?


Teachers may not be like Superman who can do all things in just a blink of an eye, but with their efforts coming from the metropolitan to the rural areas or suburban place, in the heights of danger, they crossed the rivers just to bring hope and opportunity closer to those young children who walk miles away just to go to school.

They may not have the special powers like the X-men have but they nurture the student’s ability with their own unique gifts.

They are not Batman equipped with gadgets but they are creative in using the available resources in the school for the students to learn, despite the lack of materials.

They don’t have the strength that Incredible Hulk has, but they have that vigor to fulfill their duty even at times they are worn out

They don’t have invincible powers that Iron Man has, but they can hide their true emotions when they are in action. For a Teacher, they remained happy in front of their class even when they are tired, or having a bad time. They stood strong even they are about to burst into tears.

They are not like the Avengers who accomplished any mission they encounter, but they have a mission that benefits a lot of students, that is through their teachings and advocacy.

They are not like The Fantastic Four whose powers assist each other. But together they do fantastic work through guiding their students to be the best that they can be.

They are not the Justice League who fights villains that bring havoc to their society but they fight for education to those young and aspiring leaders of tomorrow.

Spiderman strangled every enemy with his web but when his mask or costume is stripped away, he is Peter Parker, a typical guy who loves his grandma so dearly.

Every hero has their own Kryptonite. They suffer, stumble and fall. They get bruised. Just like the modern Hero, they also have that weakest and deepest turn down in their life. They are real and genuine human beings. They sacrificed half or even most of their life for us to have the education we need. They guided us through our journey, so that one day what they have taught us will make a difference to someone else’s life. That every criticism or harsh words we heard from them, that made each of us vulnerable to our weaknesses, have the purpose of unraveling the best in us. So that someday we can be the subject of hope to those lives hanging in between of failure and success. That we can add to the league for the new modern heroes of tomorrow.

They are heroes in their own way. They display greatness in their own fields of specialization, they are human, but what they contributed to our lives is the power of education being passed through generations. We are the next leaders of tomorrow and they are the masters of yesterday; which means that we should gather everything that they taught us no matter how big or small it is. What matters the most is that we learn something out of being nothing. They’ve been a mentor to us who trained us to be better than what we were before. Like a mother who listens and gives us advice when we seemed to be lost and slipping away from all the troubles in life. Like a father who walked beside us through tough times, a friend who cares even when we don’t asked for it, someone who lend their hand when we are about to give up due to pressure and stress. They, who are not our parents in flesh and blood, loved us and nourished us as if we are their own children. They’re our teachers, you might hate them sometimes, for being so strict and for being so inconsiderate, but it’s also one of their qualities that lead us to be more responsible students.

What is a Hero?

Heroic Imagination Project defined Hero as ‘’People who transform compassion, a personal virtue, into heroic action or civic virtue. In doing so, they put their best selves forward in service to humanity. A hero is an individual or a network of people that take action on behalf of others in need, or in defense of integrity or a moral cause’’. Meanwhile, a Superhero is someone whom we are fascinated to as we see them being portrayed in the movies and shows. We are hooked in every comic book or even in YouTube where they display their awesome powers. We love how the good prevails over the bad guys, how we are captivated in every clash that shows their immortal side as a hero, how their powers can help save the world from those who want to conquer it for their dark schemes. But since we are not children anymore, we know that all those things came only from the creative hands and minds of their creators. But in the real world, in the real phase of the society, we had a lot of ordinary people with a hero’s heart to those who are in need. This column hereby salutes the unsung heroes of the nation, no other than our well loved Teachers. Since ‘’Ber’’ Month heralds the advent of the event, from September to October 5. We are looking forward in the celebration of Teachers Day.

Norte. Sa tuwing naaalala ko ang aming tahanan, lubusang sumasaya ang aking nang hihinang puso. Banayad ang pag agos ng pino at puting buhangin sa aking palad. Bughaw na kalangitan na may pulutong ng mga nagkakapalang ulap ang sa iyo’y magpapangiti. Kristal na tubig ang lalagaslas sa iyong pagod na katawan. Nag tataasang mga bulubundukin ang iyong makikita, animo’y mga iniukit na hagdan na iaangat ka patungo sa kaharian ni Bathala. Nakakalungkot lamang isipin, na ang mga magagandang alaala ng aking buhay, ay unti-unting nawawala, ito’y binubura ng aking pangit na karanasan. Ang mga kulay ng marikit na kalikasan, ngayon ay ang siyang bumabalot na liwanag sa akin tuwing ako’y nasa entablado. Ako’y may pangamba, dahil sa mga suliraning maaari kong kaharapin sa trabaho kong ito. Ako na napwersa lamang ng mapait na pagkakataon. Naloko ako ng isang recruiter, nangako siyang bibigyan niya ako ng desenteng trabaho bilang kasambahay.

Masakit sa akin, may mga matang humuhusga at kumukutya sa akin. Mga salitang kay daling bitiwan sa karamihan. Ngunit di pa nila nalalaman ang tunay kong saloobin. Ako ay isang taong nabalot ng pighati, sakit, dilim at kawalang pag asa. Isa lamang akong biktima ng malupit na pagbabago ng tadhana. Ako’y niloko, pinuwersa at iginapos sa tanikala ng mahirap na pamumuhay, pinanganak akong mahirap, baka ilibing din akong mahirap, na may kabaong na inutang pa sa punenarya, masakit sa lahat, mailibing sa mundo, na ang iniwang marka sa tao ay ang pagiging isang babaeng bayaran. sa lahat, ako’y nakagapos sa mga multo ng aking mapait na kahapon. Ako’y inabuso, at pinagtaksilan ng aking kasumpaan. Nang malaman kong may mahal na siyang iba, at ako’y pinapaikot na lamang niya sa kanyang mga palad. Di ko ito kinaya. Masakit na malamang di na pala siya Masaya sa akin, biglaang tinapon ang pag iibigan, mga alaalang binuo namin nang magkasama, ay bigla na lamang tatalikdan. Nais kong magsimulang muli, ngunit gabi gabi na lamang ay natutulog akong duguan ang ilong, at may mga pasa sa katawan. Maraming gabi na akong natutulog na ang mga mata ko’y natutuyuan ng luha. Ngunit sa katunayan ay di mamulat sa isang bangunot.

Gusto ko maging Malaya. Nais ko ang pag babago para sa sarili ko. Gusto ko putulin ang mga tanikalang pumipigil sa akin upang makamtan ang mga mithiin ko sa buhay. Sa kasamaang palad, di ko ito magagawa...nang mag isa.

Oh Panginoon, sana’y dinggin Mo ang aking panalangin, isinusuko ko ang aking buhay sa Iyo. Nawa’y bigyan Mo ako ng pag asa. Upang makawala sa mundo ng kasalanan. Ako ay isang Magdalena, isang babaeng nakagawa ng mga pagkakamali sa buhay. Hinayaan ko ang aking sarili upang mapasok ang daigdig ng kadiliman na ngayon ay nais kong iwan. Higit sa lahat, ako ay isang Magdalena, na sa malapit na hinaharap ay magiging isang ina. Maibibigay ko kaya ang buhay na nararapat sa kanya? Mailalayo ko ba siya sa mundong aking ginagalawan. Matatanggap kaya niyang mayroong siyang inang katulad ko? Isang maruming inang kagaya ko, na nagkamali at naligaw ng landas.

Oh Panginoon, patawarin Mo sana ako sa mga nagawa kong kasalanan. Gusto kong makita ang Iyong Liwanag, ayoko nang matanglawan ng mga mahahalay na kulay ng spotlight sa entablado. Nawa’y ibaling Mo po sa akin ang mga mata Mong may pag mamahal at Pag asa, dahil ayoko nang makita ng mga tao bilang isang makasalanan. Gawin Mo sana akong instrumento ng Iyong Pag Ibig, dahil ayoko nang maging Instrumento ng Kadiliman, higit sa lahat. Nawa’y tulungan Mo akong maging mabuting anak Mo. Di na papaalipin sa kasalanan, di na papalagom sa kadiliman. Hinahanap ko ang Liwanag, hinahanap, hinahanap…
