Now in its 59th season, Milwaukee Repertory Theater is dedicated to providing the highest level of professional theater to Milwaukee and Wisconsin in addition to offering a wide range of educational and community programs. Located in the heart of downtown Milwaukee, the Patty and Jay Baker Theater Complex is a cleverly-converted power generation plant that houses Milwaukee Repertory Theater consisting of three theaters: the Quadracci Powerhouse (720 seats), the Steimke Studio (205 seats) and the Stackner Cabaret (118 seats), which is also a full-service restaurant and bar. Together, these spaces offer a variety of staging options from compelling dramas, powerful classics, award-winning contemporary works to full-scale musicals and comedies. Milwaukee Repertory Theater is committed to creating plays that are meaningful and relevant to the society we live in – plays that are challenging, visceral and engage the community through the issues they explore. With the start of the 2012/13 Season, The Rep expanded its Artistic Family to 19 Associate Artists. This new creative initiative will build upon the indelible legacy of The Rep’s Acting Company and now will expand to include directors, writers, designers, musicians and actors. This group will help participate and advise in choosing plays The Rep produces as well as other initiatives. They will contribute to the work seen on all Rep stages, read scripts, engage in education projects, along with other duties as well as serve as advocates for The Rep in their home communities across the nation. The Rep has long been committed to a core group of artists and this new ensemble will continue The Rep’s commitment to giving voice to a broad spectrum of cultural, educational and community experiences that serve and reflect the diversity of perspectives found in this region.

Hello!

Welcome to the Quadracci Powerhouse, and Milwaukee Repertory Theater’s production of Bruce Norris’ Clybourne Park, which we are proud to be co-producing with Arizona Theatre Company. This play is a riff on, and finds its source material from, Lorraine Hansberry’s groundbreaking, Pulitzer Prize-winning drama, A Raisin In the Sun. The

New York Times cited Raisin as changing the face of American theatre forever. When a young Bruce Norris attended a Chicago production of it in the 1970s, he was fascinated and disturbed by its lone white character, Karl Lindner (also a character in Clybourne), who he realized possibly represented some views articulated by members of his own family. This disturbing notion stuck with him – and so an intriguing idea was born about what happened to the Younger family after the curtain falls on Raisin. Moving forward some three decades later, he wrote his multi-award-winning play, Clybourne Park, which explores the neighborhood, and indeed the very house, where the central characters of A Raisin In the Sun decide to move.

I first read Clybourne Park in 2010 after hearing much buzz about it from many of my theater colleagues around the country. Occasionally you read a play that really strikes a chord within you, and even makes you gasp out loud whilst doing so – such was the case with Clybourne Park. Mr. Norris’ play is set in a fictitious area of Chicago, but every city in America, and indeed many overseas, has areas of ‘gentrification,’ including our own city of Milwaukee. This may help explain the extraordinary worldwide success of this play thus far – the only play, incidentally, to ever win the Pulitzer Prize, Olivier Award and Tony Award for Best Play in the same year.

In a recent conversation with Bruce Norris, he told me that he thought this was “a play very much for now.” Whilst I absolutely agree with him on this fact, I can’t help but think that it might well be even more relevant in ten years time when the inevitable slew of revivals start rolling out in theaters across our nation. As to what this says about how far we might have come as a society – or not, as the case may be – I suspect it will comprise many a conversation over the post-show dinner tables and continue long after the curtain falls. At least, I certainly hope so. I am excited to premiere this play in Milwaukee, and look forward to perhaps hearing a snapshot of your post-production thoughts.

Clybourne Park marks James T. Alfred’s Milwaukee Rep debut.

Greta Wohlrabe, Betsy/Lindsey

Greta feels incredibly blessed to be returning to this inspiring company

of artists. She moved to Wisconsin in 2010 to be an Acting Intern here at Milwaukee Rep for their 2010/11 Season appearing as the clarinetist in Cabaret and in the ensemble in A Christmas Carol. She has since made Wisconsin her home. Greta has spent the past two seasons with American Players Theatre, performing in The Taming of the Shrew, The Critic, The Tempest, and this past season was seen as Maria in Twelfth Night, Cassandra in Troilus and Cressida and Kyra in Skylight. She was also seen last season in Renaissance Theaterwork’s production of Honour as Claudia. She received her MFA in Acting from Purdue in 2010 and her BA from Wheaton College, MA. J.R. Yancher, Kenneth J.R. Yancher, is a member of The Rep’s 2012/13 Artistic Intern

Ensemble. He was just seen here in The Diary of Anne Frank performing the role of Nazi and as a member of the Ensemble as well as in Assassins as James Blaine and as a member of the chorus. A native of Davis, CA, J.R. graduated from the Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts (PCPA) in 2008. Upon graduating, he moved to L.A. where he worked in a

number of commercials and short films. In 2011/12, J.R. returned to PCPA as one of four professional acting interns. Favorite roles include Romeo in Romeo and Juliet, John Brooke in Little Women – The Musical, Brodie in The Real Thing and The Corporal in The Caucasian Chalk Circle. Other shows at PCPA include Cabaret, Othello, A Christmas Carol and The Sound of Music, among others. He is honored to be part of Milwaukee Rep’s 2012/13 Season. Bruce Norris, Playwright

Bruce Norris is the author of the play Clybourne Park, which was produced

at the Royal Court Theatre and won the Evening Standard Award for Best Play, 2010, the 2011 Pulitzer Prize, the 2012 Tony Award for Best Play and the Olivier Award (2011). Other plays include The Infidel (2000), Purple Heart (2002), We All Went Down to Amsterdam (2003), The Pain and the Itch (2004) and The Unmentionables (2006), all of which had their premieres at Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Chicago. His work has also been seen at Playwrights Horizons (New York), Lookingglass Theatre Company, Philadelphia Theatre Company, Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, Staatstheater Mainz (Germany) and The Galway Festival (Ireland), among others. He is the recipient of the Steinberg Playwright Award (2009), and The Whiting Foundation Prize for Drama (2006) as well as two Joseph

Jefferson Awards (Chicago) for Best New Work. As an actor he can be seen in the films A Civil Action, The Sixth Sense and All Good Things. He lives in New York.

Mark Clements began his tenure as The Rep’s Artistic

Sandy Ernst, Casting Director/Associate Artistic Director

Sandy made her first casting trip to New York City with American Players Theatre founders Randall Duk Kim and Annie Occhiogrosso over 30 years ago, and continued with APT as both a member of the directing staff and as the Production Stage Manager for the next 15 years. She has served as Milwaukee Rep’s Casting Director for over a decade, seeing up to a thousand auditions each season. She is also the Artistic Intern Company Director, teaches professional audition technique and auditions emerging artists for The Rep’s Acting Internship in colleges and universities throughout the country. Sandy was Casting Director for the independent feature films Baraboo and Waterwalk.

Jill Walmsley Zager, Dialect Coach

Jill is very happy to be back at The Rep for the 2012/13 Season. Other Milwaukee Rep credits include: Sense and Sensibility, A Christmas Carol, The Diary of Anne Frank, The Mountaintop, Assassins, To Kill a Mockingbird, Lombardi, Yellowman, Ten Chimneys, Cabaret, My Name Is Asher Lev, Laurel and Hardy and The 39 Steps. Jill has recently returned to Milwaukee from three years as the Co-Head of Voice and Dialects and the Company Coach at American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. Regionally, she has worked at Chicago Shakespeare Theater, Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire, Drury Lane Water Tower, Apple Tree Theatre, Drury Lane Oakbrook Terrace, Utah Shakespeare Festival and Milwaukee Chamber Theatre. Dawn Helsing Wolters joined Milwaukee Repertory

Theater in 2009 and Clybourne Park marks her final production as Managing Director. She has served as President of the Milwaukee Arts Partners consortium and as a member of the Bridge Committee for the Sharon Lynne Wilson Center for the Arts, the National Advisory Board for the Lunt-Fontanne Fellowship Program at Ten Chimneys, the Rotary Club

of Milwaukee and the Advisory Board for the Chicago-based Still Point Theatre Collective. Dawn was Executive Director of Chicago’s Court Theatre from 2005 to 2009, where she served on the board of The League of Chicago Theatres, chairing its Nominating Committee. As a founding board member of the Hyde Park Cultural Alliance, she helped lead the group’s transition to an independent not-for-profit organization, chairing its Governance Committee. Dawn served as Director of Development at Center Stage in Baltimore, and held marketing and public relations positions at Center Stage and Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. While completing her MFA in Theatre Management at Yale School of Drama, she was Associate Managing Director of Yale Repertory Theatre and Managing Director of the Summer Cabaret. Dawn has served on the Executive Committee of the League of Resident Theatres and consulted in leadership development, capacity building and fundraising and served in an advisory capacity for the National Endowment for the Arts, the Massachusetts Cultural Commission, Arts Midwest, The University of Chicago’s Graham School of General Studies and Goucher College’s graduate Arts Administration program and been a guest lecturer at several colleges and universities. “Thanks to all of you who have helped support The Rep during my tenure and those who played a role in shaping this wonderful company. Laura F. Wendt, Stage Manager

Laura is excited to spend her seventh season here at Milwaukee Repertory Theater. She is a Wisconsin native and graduate from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Other regional theater credits include: Riverside Theatre Shakespeare Festival, American Players Theatre and Nebraska Shakespearean Festival. Special thanks to Matt, Briana and Holly for all they do.

Kimberly Ann McCann, Assistant Stage Manager

Kimberly was last seen working in the Quadracci Powerhouse on The Diary of Anne Frank and is delighted to return for her second show at The Rep. Broadway credits include Curtains. Off-Broadway credits include Bill W. and Dr. Bob, How to Save the World and John Ferguson. Regional credits include Million Dollar Quartet (Chicago), Northlight Theatre, Tuacahn Center for the Arts and Skylight Music Theatre. Other credits include Door Shakespeare, Illinois Shakespeare Festival, Colorado Shakespeare Festival, ArtsPower National Touring Theatre and numerous productions at The Julliard School. Kimberly is a graduate of Illinois State University and a proud member of Actors’ Equity.

Marissa Robinson, Stage Management Intern

Marissa is thrilled to be joining Milwaukee Rep this season. She is originally from Connecticut and is a recent graduate of Emerson College in Boston. Previously, she

has worked for Anne Bogart’s SITI Company, the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company and The New London Barn Playhouse. She also recently spent a semester in London where she got the fabulous opportunity to work and study at Shakespeare’s Globe, Duchess Theatre and Playhouse Theatre on the West End. Special thanks to friends and family for their endless support and encouragement.

Maggie Ellsworth, Assistant Director

Maggie Ellsworth is proud to be a Directing Intern for the 2012/13 Season. So far this season she has assisted Laura Gordon on Gutenberg! The Musical!, May Adrales on The Mountaintop, Megan O’Brien on Blues in the Night and Aaron Posner on A Christmas Carol. Maggie holds an MFA in Theatre-Directing from Western Illinois University and a BA from Carthage College where she studied Musical Theatre and Political Science. Many thanks to Sandy and Mark for this rewarding experience, the cast for all their incredible insights and honesty, and her husband, Brett, for his unwavering support.

Access

Deaf or Hard of Hearing Services: The Quadracci Powerhouse (QP) and the Stiemke Studio are equipped with an infrared listening system which ensures clarity of sound from any seat in the house. Performances are offered in American Sign Language for a Thursday evening of all QP productions and one Sunday matinee for all Stiemke Studio productions. We also offer a Captioned Theater performance during the second to last Sunday matinee performance of all QP productions. Please call The Rep Ticket Office at 414-224-9490 for more information. Script synopses are available upon request for QP and Stiemke Studio productions by calling 414-224-1761.

Blind or Low Vision Services: Large print programs are available in the Quadracci Powerhouse and Stiemke Studio from any usher. Every Rep production has one audio-described performance. Using an earpiece attached to a small hand-held receiver, patrons hear a live, real-time description of the action on stage. Call the Ticket Office for more information. A descriptive tape is available for each QP and Stiemke production by calling 414-224-1761.
