Peter HeywoodDepartment of ComputerScience, Sheffield University

Peter is a PhD Student in the University ofSheffield’s Department of Computer Science,his research is focussed on the acceleration oftransport system micro-simulation usingGraphics Processing Units (GPUs). Under thesupervision of Dr Paul Richmond and workingclosely with the Transport Systems Catapult,Peter is currently developing techniques toextend FLAME GPU (an open-source agent-based modelling environment) specific totransport system simulation to enablesimulations of significantly greater scale andcomplexity than currently possible.

Martin HiggittAssociate Director, JMP Systra

Martin is an Associate Directorat JMP, with over 17 years’ consultancyexperience, specialising in sustainabletransport strategies and behaviour changeprogrammes. He leads JMP’s “Influencing TravelBehaviour” work area. In this role, he hasoverseen many of our large-scale community-based behaviour change programmes whichhave involved Personal Travel Planning,workplace travel planning, school travelplanning, marketing campaigns and on-lineand social media campaigns.

Yaron HollanderDirector, CTthink!

Yaron has developed manystatistical and econometric models, originallyin the field of travel behaviour and morerecently in other fields, such as healthtechnology and care management. Until 2015Yaron led TfL’s policy appraisal and modellingteam, where he introduced TfL’s mappingwebsite (tfl.gov.uk/WebCAT), TfL’s strategy forusing mobile data for planning (ProjectEDMOND) and London’s cycling networkmodel (CYNEMON).

Stephen became the executive director ofCampaign for Better Transport in 1988. Histransport policy expertise is widely regarded,and he is regularly called to serve as agovernmental advisor. He has led numeroussuccessful policy campaigns, is frequentlyquoted by the national press, and is a regularauthor of research and opinion pieces. He wasawarded the OBE in 1996 for services totransport and the environment. In 2008 he washonoured with a PTRC Lifetime AchievementAward 'for furthering the role of transportplanning in society'.

Dr Mark MawsonComputational Scientist,Hartree Centre

Dr Mark Mawson is a computational scientist atthe Hartree Centre specialising in acceleratingsoftware through optimisation and porting tohighly parallel architectures. He completed hisPhD on the topic of highly parallel fluid-structureinteraction in 2013 and since then has beenhelping academia and industry take advantage ofthe latest developments in computer architectureto reduce compute time and solve increasinglylarge and complicated problems.

Hugh NeffendorfKatalysis Limited

Hugh is the founder and Managing Director ofKatalysis. Prior to 1997, Hugh was ManagingDirector of MVA Systematica, a prominentconsultancy in software and informationmanagement. He is also Visiting Professor at theUniversity of Southampton, Department ofGeography and a member of the UK Government'sAdvisory Panel on Public Sector Information.

Katalysis is very well known for developingcreative initiatives and for forging andmotivating partnerships.

Simon NielsenHead of Strategic Analysis,Transport for London

Simon has 28 years experience in transportplanning in the UK. He joined TfL in 2010. Hiscurrent role involves providing evidence tosupport the transport strategies, policies andinterventions contained within strategicdocuments such as the Mayor’s TransportStrategy (MTS).

He is responsible for the annual Travel inLondon report and the annual London TravelDemand Survey, a household survey of 8,000households. This analysis is used to ensure thatforecasts produced by his team are grounded ina detailed understanding of travel trends andbehaviour. The scope of his work alsoencompasses air quality monitoring andmodelling which feeds into the Mayor’s AirQuality Strategy.

Klaus NoekelHead of Innovation, PTV Group

As Head of Innovation at PTV Group, Dr. Noekel is responsible for novel applicationsand methodological development of the PTVVision Traffic Suite of transportation planningsoftware, including PTV Visum (demandmodelling), PTV Vissim (trafficmicrosimulation), PTV Optima (real-time trafficmanagement). He participates in numerouscollaborations with the academic community intransportation modelling and has published ondiverse topics, particularly traffic assignment.Dr Noekel joined PTV Group in 1997 and hasworked on numerous consultancy and softwaredevelopment projects in transportationplanning and traffic engineering for more than25 years.

Miguel PicornellTechnical Manager,Kineo/Nommon

Miguel Picornell started his professional careeras a project manager in the constructionindustry, and has also worked as an AssistantProfessor and Associate Researcher at theSchool of Civil Engineering of the UPV. InOctober 2012 he joined Nommon, where he hasled different research and consultancy projectsrelated to spatio-temporal data analysis andtransport modelling and simulation. He has abroad experience in mobile positioningtechnologies, spatio-temporal data analysis,statistics and socio-economic aspects ofhuman location and mobility patterns. He leadsKineo's technical team in charge of developingthe algorithms and software tools behind ouranalytics solutions, and is also in charge ofmanaging projects and customer relationships.

Jonathan RaperCEO, TransportAPI

Jonathan Raper is CEO of Transport API,Britain's leading provider of open publictransport data to over 600 operators, media,developers and government users. Jonathanhas led http://transportapi.com/ from PlacrLtd. from startup to first funding round andinto residency at the UK government's OpenData Institute. He is a Visiting Professor at CityUniversity London and sits on the Departmentfor Transport Transparency Board and the ICTKnowledge Transfer Network Board.

Dr Richmond is a research focused ResearchSoftware Engineer who has recently beenawarded one of only six EPSRC Early CareerResearch Software Engineering (RSE)Fellowships. The focus of this fellowship is infacilitating the use of accelerated architecturessuch as Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) toaccelerate scientific discovery. He is developingsoftware techniques, a provision of skills andtraining material and building a community tohelp drive the use of accelerators intomainstream science and engineering.

Chris SharpeDirector, Holistic City

Chris designed the CityCAD and StreetscapePro applications and leads the urban designsoftware and consultancy business of HCL.Over the last 14 years, Chris has worked as asoftware consultant, urban masterplanner anddesign consultant for several major public,private and third sector organizations in the UKand overseas.

His experience includes the masterplan designof major urban extensions, new towns andretail-led masterplans, as well as public designpolicy documentation, conservation studies,street design and transport planning projects.

Katarzyna Sila-Nowicka (Sila) is a researchassociate in urban methods, modelling andsimulations at the Urban Big Data Centre atUniversity of Glasgow. She previously worked asa research fellow in Centre for Geoinformaticsat the University of St Andrews, under Marie-Curie Fellowship (FP7 Geocrowd) on the topicsrelated with extracting knowledge from VGI andenriching GPS trajectories with contextualinformation (PhD Studies).

Gordon StokesVisiting Research Associate,Transport Studies Unit,University of Oxford

Gordon Stokes has worked in transportresearch for 35 years, in government research,universities, consultancies and governmentagencies. His work has mainly combined travelbehaviour data analysis and writing ontransport policy. During the 2000s he workedfor the Countryside Agency and extended his

analytical work outside the area of transport.His interest in the ethics of modelling hasarisen from involvement with communitygroups concerned about the use of predictionin transport assessments for developmentproposals.

Eime TobariAssociate Director, Space Syntax

Eime Tobari is a qualified architect in Japan. Shehas extensive research experience inarchitecture and sociology, focusing on therelationship between space and its behavioural,social and economic outcomes. Eime joinedSpace Syntax Limited in 2007. She has beeninvolved in a variety of projects in the UK andinternationally and supported private andpublic sector clients in their design developmentand planning applications. Her expertise coversa wide range of scales from the internal layout ofbuildings to city-wide masterplanninng.

Nicola TrollSystra

Nicola Troll is a specialist intransport modelling. She currently heads upSYSTRA’s Pedestrian Modelling work. She hasdeveloped and used a wide variety of modelsincluding: modelling pedestrian flows, taximodels with both driver and customerresponses, the effectiveness of noise levies forairports, the revenue modelling for airlines andthe, well known, London TransportationStudies model. She is also SYSTRA’s technicallead for modelling High Speed 2 demand.

Tom van VurenDivisional Director, Mott MacDonald

Tom has been Chairman of Modelling Worldsince its inception in 2006. As his Twitter profilestates, he is passionate about transportmodelling and always on the look-out for betterways to collect data, enhance the efficiency ofmethods and improve accessibility of modelresults. He holds an MSc from the University ofDelft and a PhD from the Institute for TransportStudies and the University of Leeds. Tom is aDivisional Director at Mott MacDonald and aVisiting Professor at the University of Leeds; andis a qualified Transport Planning Professional.

Luis (Pilo) Willumsen has over 35 years ofexperience as a consultant, transport plannerand researcher with a distinguished academiccareer. He set up his independent practice in2009. He has written over 50 technical papers,books and book chapters. His experience coverstransport modelling assignments andleadership of numerous traffic and revenueforecasting studies for toll roads, managedlanes, rail, metro, etc., undertaken either for theprivate sector, financial institutions orgovernment sponsors. James WoodcockProgramme Lead, PublicHealth modelling, CEDAR,Cambridge University

James’ research focuses on modelling healthand sustainability. He has particular interest inhow we can improve health in the transition toa low carbon transport system. His workinvestigates both the health impacts of changesto transport and food systems, developingdetailed and realistic exposure scenarios, andmodelling and how changes could be broughtabout.

Tom WorsleyVisiting Fellow, Institute ofTransport Studies, LeedsUniversity

Tom worked as an economist in the publicsector for 41 years, spending most of his timeon transport forecasting, appraisal andmodelling, developing techniques and advisingdecision-makers. He was awarded a CBE in the2012 New Year's Honours list for services to theDepartment for Transport and made a Fellow ofthe Chartered Institute of Transport andLogistics in 2011.

He has held a number of senior economistposts during his career. He was responsible forsetting up NATA (the New Approach ToAppraisal) in 1997 and for the development ofthe Department’s National Transport Model in2000/1. When the Rail Group was establishedby the Department in 2005, he led the teamresponsible for Network Modelling Framework,a forecasting model used to provide theevidence to inform the 2007 Rail White Paperand High Level Output Specification (HLOS).More recently he has managed the team ofeconomists who provide economic advice onaviation and shipping and on transport and theenvironment.
