The Team

Our team members are Mitzy Correa, Sebastian Salazar, Gary Jones, and Denisse

Saucedo.

All the individuals helped with the design, development, and research of the project

"Light Up Mount Cristo Rey".

This team has 3 Seniors and 1 Junior. All of them looking forward to a major within the

STEM fields.

Denisse Saucedo:

My name is Denise Gabriela Saucedo, I am part of the robotics team and my favorite hobby is do 3D animations. My teacher, and also a coach from the Robotics Team, give us the chance

to participate in this competition, which I found very interesting for me because there I can use

my knowledge as a 3D animator, and why not, learn from there new things and pass a good

time as a team. When we start to work with Unity, it was a little difficult for us because we never

work before with this program but what I like is that we have the initiative to learn, and we give

our best. Be part of this team and this competition is an honor because we are doing better as a

team, and we learn a lot from new things that can be very important and helpful to know in our

future.

Gary Jones:

As a member of the group for the SunCity Challenge, I feel like I have learned a lot in what

goes into developing a realistic game. Such things include making models, coding, and a lot of

debugging, as well as dividing work within the team for efficiency with the already occupied time

we have.

Sebastian Salazar:

At heart, I am a programmer and I have always been fascinated with computers and their

programming. At the same time, I am an artist by blood it runs in my family and I still enjoy

creating mesmerizing compositions. This project was an excellent way to combine them both.

Mitzy Correa:

I am a follower of technology .when my teacher told me about the SunCity Challenge, I had no

idea about how Unity worked. This project helped me mainly to learn. Therefore I enjoyed every

part of it.

IDEA

Our vision for the project is to integrate rest areas in the path to the top of

the mountain. Each rest area would have a set of solar panels that would

give energy to various lights set throughout the path and at the cross itself.

Each rest area would also act as a learning module, in which the history

and some facts of the mountain would be showcased.

Cultural Background

El Paso, along with its neighbor city Juarez, share a strong religious culture, which

emphasizes on Christianity and Catholicism. With this in mind, while the team was looking for

an emblematic monument of El Paso, Mount Cristo Rey came to mind.

A simple, yet very symbolic sculpture made by Urbici Soler, is one of the best ways to

introduce solar energy into the community of El Paso.

Historical Background

As the vision of Fr. Lourdes Costa, a local parish priest that, in 1933, looked at his

back window and saw that the Cerro de los Muleros (Now known as Mount Cristo Rey)

needed an erecting, glorious monument at the top.

After sharing the idea with the congregation, they pledged to get a wooden cross,

that later turned into an iron cross, until they got the sculptor for the real cross.

Within the congregation, they created a path in order to get all the material and the

people at the top safely in 1934.

In 1937, Costa met with the Bishop to get a sculptor, which ended up being one of the

Bishop's friends Urbici Soler. Which ended up creating a clay model that was approved by the

end of 1937.

After getting the materials, Soler worked on it and finished by October 1939.

3.The Design

Designing Softwares

We used a variety of programs in order to obtain our final product. Each member was related to

one of the programs in a different level, which gave the entire project a variety in its resources

and design.

The programs used were:

Maya (Modeling Software)

Inventor (Modeling Software)

Blender (Modelling Software)

Unity (Simulation Make)

REST AREA

The Rest Areas will have around 16 solar panels each. That will come up to 48 solar

panels for the entire project. The energy obtained will be stored in high efficiency batteries that

will be close to each station.

In the rest areas there will be panels with facts, history, and information of Mount

Cristo Rey.

My design came from this futuristic construction in snowy weather. I changed the

design by making it bigger, in case of massive visits.

Solar Panels

Solar Energy works by the excitation of protons, which create DC current, caused by

the solar energy that hits the earth. However, current solar panels are able to get up to 20% of said energy. Nonetheless, El Paso has enough sunny days (297 sunny days a year) in

order to fulfill the energy needed.

The Cross

In order to innovate in the sculpture itself, we will be adding lights around it. This will

create a wonderful view for all the people using the freeway at night.

Another issue with the mountain is that is not safe for everyone. Thus, we produced the

idea of adding barriers to make the path straight and easier to follow. Furthermore, we will be

adding lights for all the path. This will help anyone that may have run late on a visit to be safe

on his way down.
