HOSPITAL VISIT

Mungindi Central School

Alison Barwick Alison Barwick accepted a posting to Mungindi Central School in January 2002 after completing a Bachelor of Arts and Diploma of Secondary Education at Newcastle University. Alison majored in Ancient and Modern History and qualified for teaching in the Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE) faculty. She has taught at Mungindi Central for the past 13 years with a hiatus of 8 months when the family moved to Queensland and returned. Alison also is a nationally accredited Business Services teacher. Industry curriculum frameworks give students the opportunity to gain credit towards the NSW Higher School Certificate and credit towards national vocational qualifications under the Australian Qualifications Framework. Industry curriculum frameworks are based on nationally endorsed Training Packages. Students are able to qualify for a Certificate II in Business (BSB20112) or a Statement of Attainment towards a Certificate III in Business (BSB30112) if are successful in their studies delivered and assessed by Alison. Alison holds a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40110) which enables national recognition of the student’s competence. The Northern Border Senior Access (NBSA), being the collaborative effort of Stage 6 over four Central Schools has provided the opportunity for Alison to coordinate the delivery of Ancient History to students in Preliminary and HSC years of study. Alison will also be coordinating the delivery of Business Services across schools following a successful audit by the Registered Training Organisation.

Alison delivers World and Australian History and World and Australian Geography to students in Stage 4 and 5. Having studied the Japanese language, Alison has also delivered this as part of the LOTE (Language other than English) mandatory study to Stage 4. Following in the delivery of Languages, Alison has taught Aboriginal Language to students from Kindergarten to Year 10. Alison is the Mungindi Central School’s Anti-Racism officer and formerly, the Behaviour Support person. She has relieved in the Assistant Principal and Head Teacher positions and was instrumental in coordinating the 2014 NBSA Graduation in Term 4 of 2014. Whilst undertaking a two-day professional development course offered by the Sydney Jewish Holocaust Museum, Alison was able to listen and converse with survivors and University Lecturers of this genocide. Topics of study by students in 2015 have included :

- The Holocaust - Pompei and Herculaneum - New Kingdom Egypt - Hatshepsut - Augustus - Egyption and Chinese Civilisation - Geographical Skills.

Welcome back everyone to what will be a very busy and active Week Nine. As the Term speeds to a

very intense close we will once again continue with the break in our items for tendering while we do a

bit of a search across the site to see what range of excess items we have. The next round could well be

some old televisions and a mix of items. The tender process will restart next term so be prepared as

we do a really intense search for excess items.

I hope that all fathers were suitably impressed with the vast range of surprise gifts that you would have

been showered with from the grateful children. The sales process as managed by the Yrs.3/4/5/6 class

proved to be an absolute bonanza for the students as they found and developed sales skills that they

did not know they had. To the extent that they sold me multiple items as I was just strolling by the Hall.

The gentle yet persuasive lure of the patter that they used reminded me of some random visits to car

yards, but it was by far more effective. The proof of their skills is in the amount of funds that were raised

by these very keen students.

This week we have our Year 11 students sitting their end of course examinations. While we have quite

a small cohort of students, these exams are very important as it means the end of their Preliminary

studies. Next Term they will then launch into their HSC studies. This is a very critical step in their

progress towards the completion of their Stage 6 studies. We wish them all the best and hope they

have made sound preparations in terms of revision and study. Students who have completed all their

courses successfully will start their HSC courses as of next term. We are very blessed to have a fo-

cused group of HSC students who are now in their last two weeks of official school. They have complet-

ed the formal aspects of their study and are now working very hard at using all the knowledge they

have gathered via teacher feedback and study to ensure that they are ready for the HSC examinations

that are just around the corner. I have heard some excellent reports in terms of the level of the applica-

tion that is being made by these students. The teachers are working with them both in class and after

school to ensure they are ready to achieve the best results possible. As their time at the school nears a

close there will be a Farewell Assembly held on Friday 18 September to acknowledge the wonderful

contributions they have made to the school. I have been seeking to find out how they would like to

spend their last afternoon of official school life. At this stage we are still working on a plan for this.

Just a timely reminder about the end of term reward day this term, we are focusing on attendance as

well as classroom application. In order to qualify students will need to have an attendance rate of 80%

or better. This will be quite a challenge for some students, but the rewards will be more than worth the

effort. A half day of fun activities on the last day of this term. I may have to sincerely apologise re the

planned activates as we go to print I am waiting on confirmations of the jumping castles. There may

well be a scheduling issue in terms of the time of day. My aspirations regarding the laser skirmish have

been scuttled due to the PCYC having a rather large event on that weekend which involves setup on

the Friday. As I wait to find out if we can access any of our planned activities we will have to hastily look

for exciting alternatives. There will be a letter coming out early next week outlining the plans for the day

and confirming an invitation to participate in the half day activity. It is very important that students are

maintaining a high level of attendance and high levels of engagement with their classwork and whole

school in order to qualify for the day. As an ongoing reminder to our students all those who are

maintaining the required attendance will be published in the newsletter. Plus I am sure they will be

reminded in class as well.

Healthy ideas for class parties As parents we want the best for our kids, especially their nutrition. We usually pack or help

them pack their lunchbox, help them decide what to choose for their lunch order at the school

canteen, but we don’t have much choice in what they may choose to eat at school functions,

events and class parties.

With the introduction of the DEC Nutrition in Schools Policy in 2011, this has helped schools to

support families make healthy decisions about what foods are made available to students at

these events.

Here are a few suggestions for healthy party food to send to school.

Fruit bread with a scraping of margarine

Pikelets with a scraping of margarine and jam or fruit pikelets

Rice crackers with low fat vegetable dip e.g. hommos, tzatziki etc.

Vegetable sticks with low fat dip e.g. cottage cheese or cream cheese

Fruit e.g. cut up, fruit kebabs, fruit and yoghurt or custard

Air popped popcorn and dried fruit mixes

Cheese cubes and crackers

Mini vegetables muffins or mini fruit muffins

A reminder to all parents/carers. Mungindi Central School lunch break is

between 11:00 am 11:40 am every day. Please make sure your child has

their lunch available at the start of this break, so school learning time is not

interrupted.
