A QUICK shake of Dietmar Fleckhammer’s hand reveals a calloused, vice-like grip – the product of a life spent manipulating metal. His strong, industrious hands are driven by a sharp mind with a knack for problem solving, which he credits for much of the success in his 40 year career as a blacksmith.

Perhaps a predilection for working with their hands was in the Fleckhammer blood. “I was fortunate to have a father who was very practical,” says Dietmar, who began his metal working journey as a fitter and turner at the tender age of 14. He spent 11 years in the trade and during that time his fascination with metal led him to explore blacksmithing as a hobby. Dietmar taught himself the art of shaping hot metal and discovered he “had a natural tendency for working with iron.”

Despite warnings that it would be folly to try to build a business on the dying industry of blacksmithing, Dietmar chose to focus on his forge, initially setting up as an engineer and selling hand crafted iron fire sets on the side.

As luck would have it, he’d picked the perfect time to take the plunge into professional blacksmithing. The rustic revolution of the early 70s and the rise in popularity of colonial style furnishings meant there was overwhelming demand for bespoke metal work, particularly antique reproductions. In fact, Dietmar was so inundated with work that he employed and trained his brother Rainer and, soon after, John Bleumink. Both John and Rainer still run commercial forges, with Rainer specialising in the hand forged fire sets that were merely a sideline when the business was launched nearly four decades ago.

Taggerty’s rambling bushland was home to Dietmar and his family for 12 years, where he was known not only for his ironworks but also for his wildlife shelter. He devoted much energy to the difficult and often heartbreaking task of rescuing and tending to sick or injured native birds and animals, including countless victims of the 2009 fires.

Dietmar’s reverence for the natural world and his love of native flora and fauna are embodied in his rusted metal sculptures; he adeptly captures the majesty of a lyre bird, the wonder of unfurling tree fern fronds or the simple elegance of dragonflies clinging to rushes.

The scope of his work, however, extends far beyond sculpture and after retiring almost four years ago he has an enormous amount of fun making everything from patterned arrowheads to blacksmithing tools

for other hobbyists. He also takes great pleasure in reincarnating metal, transforming old wool clippers, chainsaw bars, railway spikes and even high voltage cable into knife blades.

Dietmar has evidently relished a career where the products of his labour are so tangible and believes that “working with their hands is something missing in a lot of people’s lives … It’s important to express your creativity and humanity, it expands you.” He enjoys helping others unlock the creative potential in their hands through workshops, sharing with them the thrill of thrusting metal into fire and shaping it into any functional or decorative form their heart desires.

This year Dietmar returned to his old stomping ground of Taggerty for the Alexandra & District Open Gardens. He set up a small gas forge in the “Yankalilla” carport, impressing onlookers by

quickly fashioning glowing hot iron into graceful rose petals with a few well-placed blows of his hammer. Watching Dietmar work with such dexterity and command over his tools is quite captivating and the resulting metal masterpieces bring to mind the words of Rudyard Kipling: “Crowns are for the valiant – sceptres for the bold!

Thrones and powers for mighty men who dare to take and hold!”

“Nay!” said the Baron, kneeling in his hall,

“But Iron – Cold Iron – is master of men all!”

IN DECEMBER 2009, the Triangle Arts Group Inc. (TAG) bundled 20 children and a giant rainbow serpent onto a bus for a secret mission: to have the snake blessed by the Dalai Lama. The children had lovingly pieced together the mosaic snake in TAG’s after school arts classes at Buxton Primary, a program designed to provide a comfortable space for children to reflect on their recent experience of the bushfires. The blessed serpent, which incorporates objects salvaged from the fires, is a bold and colourful testament to the TAG’s underlying philosophy: “honour the past and embrace the future.”

The creative seeds of TAG germinated in the ashes of the February 2009 fires, the group forming just a month later with the aim of using the arts as a means of recovery and rebuilding. Since its inception,

the group has orchestrated numerous artistic projects, helping to heal scarred landscapes and spirits in the “Triangle” (Marysville, Buxton and Narbethong).

Among TAG’s early projects were the Kids After School Arts Program and the installation of ‘New Life’, a sculpture by local artist Bruno Torfs. ‘New Life’, which depicts a little girl releasing a bird from her cupped hands, now stands on the old Kindergarten site in Marysville’s Gallipoli Park, surrounded by lush gardens and the sounds of children playing.

Lisa Nolte, President of TAG and one of its founding members, says the group wanted to “ensure an art-filled joyous space for the children remained a rebuilding priority.” With a great deal of imagination, determination and organisation the Kin Playspace adventure

playground in Gallipoli Park was opened in 2011, providing a home for the blessed mosaic serpent who welcomes visitors and watches over the children as they play.

The Kids After School Arts Program is still going strong too. Practicing or lapsed artists work with local children to make amazing artworks. Recently the children designed, sculpted and painted ornamental papier-mâché chairs that were featured in the Marysville Art Show.

Anyone who felt a connection to the Triangle area was encouraged to participate in the ‘1000 Hands’, an epic art installation of cement hands that was delivered over a four year period. “Community workshops were held in parks, shops, verandahs, schools, and events to create the large tiles. Each tile is personalised

not only by an individuals handprint, but also by the secret messages and special symbols many chose to incorporate,” says Lisa. The hands, in a mixture of earthy colours, adorn low seating walls all around Gallipoli Park Lake, symbolising the community’s “strength, resilience and unity.”

incredible in the wake of the fires. Led by Artist Jeanette Jennings, more than 200 community members recreated Alice Talbot’s flora illustrations on clay plaques. Talbot, a botanist and educator, walked the trails of Murrindindi over 20 years ago sketching roadside flowers. the creation of a community made feature film, ‘The Weatherman’s Umbrella,’ and Lisa describes the plot as follows:

It’s the story of a little girl lost in the forest around Marysville who becomes involved in the quest to find the Weatherman’s misplaced umbrella. This wouldn’t be such a big thing, but when the Weatherman puts on his boots it gets frosty, when he puts on his scarf it gets windy, and when he puts on his hat it gets warm. Without an umbrella, there will be no more rain.

The film is due for release in January 2016 and there will be plenty of opportunities to see it, with sceenings at Federation Square, the Memo in Healesville and, of course, in Marysville (venue TBA).

Curation of the Marysville Art Show, held every Melbourne Cup Weekend, is now also entrusted to TAG. The Show, which has been run by various

community groups over the past 30 odd years, is organised entirely by volunteers and the proceeds go back into supporting the arts and cultural events in the area, such as the recent Marysville Jazz and Blues Weekend.

Local artists, school children and community groups, as well as interstate artists, provided an impressive display at this year’s Art Show, attracting around 100 people to the opening night. Several awards were up for grabs, with Belinda Rogers’ superb oil on linen, ‘Autumn Leaves on Water’, winning $1500 for the Murrindindi Shire Best Exhibit.

After more than six years of artistic achievement, TAG is still deeply committed to the community’s prosperity and to making the Triangle a Mecca for the arts. The team is “approaching 2016 with renewed vigour and plenty of exciting plans,” says Lisa,

and they are always happy to have new people bring their ideas and enthusiasm to the table.

IN HIS late teens and a bit cheeky, young Wayne Miller made the late Jack Shiel an offer he couldn’t refuse.

Jack, whose name adorns the gardens opposite Murrindindi Shire Council offices, was an iconic figure in Alexandra and ran the town’s menswear store for many years.

As a young man Wayne was quite impressed with the well-respected menswear business Jack had developed, and as the 1960s drew to a close, an offer was

made that would not be taken up for more than 15 years.

Wayne and his wife Jo have developed and expanded Miller’s Mensland and now have options for women and children, from formalwear to skatewear, all still offered with the trademark service and smile that Jack made famous many years ago.

“Jo and I were friends of Jack and his family growing up. I said to him when I was a student at Alexandra High, if ever his family didn’t want to continue with the business I would be interested. I just

liked the idea of what he had here,” Wayne said.

But it didn’t happen straight away. After finishing school Wayne embarked on a successful career with the National Australia Bank in Alexandra, and 16 years later, the Millers were living in Mount Martha with Wayne working in the company’s Mornington branch.

“One day while on holiday on the Gold Coast, we ran into Jack.

“He asked me if we were still interested in the shop. I might have forgotten

about it for a while but he remembered,” Wayne said.

“So at that stage I had to decide if I would continue my career in banking – I was coming up for managerial positions at the time. It was a big decision.”

The lure of returning to their home town in the Murrindindi Shire’s beautiful countryside proved too much.

“We had two small children, and, more than anything it was just that we knew how great it was to grow up in a small country town and we

wanted to give that same opportunity to Erin and Damien,” Wayne said.

The Millers returned home to Alexandra in July 1984 having purchased Jack Shiel’s Menswear store then located at 73 Grant Street.

They purchased, refurbished and relocated to 86 Grant Street in 1989, where they remain to this day.

For 31 years they have outfitted Alexandra and district residents and visitors with men’s and ladies’ surf and skatewear, schoolwear, workwear, and even hire wear.

“Ladies’ wear came into it when we started to get the surf and skate brands in the late 1990s,” Wayne said.

“It’s been a great thing for us and, we think, for expanding what’s on offer here in Alexandra.”

What started as a menswear store – catering to the working man of the Alexandra district – has modernised and diversified hand in hand with the community.

“We’ve outfitted some of our customers when they started school, gone on to secondary college, celebrated their deb ball, suited them up for their wedding, and we’re at the stage now where we’re getting their children in to outfit them for their first year of school,” Wayne explained.

Despite making them feel a little long in the tooth, it’s a satisfying experience for the community-minded couple.

“Technically, now, I think we are the second longest serving retailer in Grant Street, Alexandra,” he said.

Over that time the focus of Alexandra has shifted somewhat from an industry and supply town to something of a lifestyle resort – a safe and beautiful escape from the hustle and bustle of urban Victoria.

But the quaint little town has retained its charm and the community is as affable and neighbourly as ever.

“We’ve been very fortunate over the years, we’ve had a lot of local support for which we are very grateful,” Jo Miller said.

“Over the years we’ve been involved in a lot of things. We’ve tried to play our small part over those years to do what we can within the community.

“You do anything you can, if anyone needs a bit of a hand, just as others have been there for us. That’s the way Alexandra is.

“It’s always been a solid town with a friendly community full of helpful people. The appeal and beauty of the town – it’s still here.

“As people travel around

the state looking for a country town to settle in and put down roots for the next phase of their lives, Alexandra seems to go really well. It appears to visitors to be a healthy and bustling little town – a vibrant community.

“There’s a good diversity and quality of shops and services for the size of the town, and it’s compact.”

As Wayne explains, it’s something of a self-fulfilling prophecy.

“I think we, and most of the

people in this community, just love the town we live in – it’s as simple as that. We’re proud of the town and our wonderful community’s spirit. That’s what draws people here and that’s what keeps it going,” he said.

“We get lots of support from people who don’t live here but come back year after year.

“Many of those who come back become regular customers and friends. It’s lovely to stay in touch and watch their families grow.”

THE CHERRY is a delicate fruit and its journey from blossom to your mouth is fraught with hazards. A lot has to go right for that precious little package of flavour and nutrients to get to you unscathed: “They are so weather susceptible and have a short shelf life too, which is not only why cherries are so special, but why they cost more than some other fruits,” says Michael Rouget, Managing Director of Koala Cherries.

The sensitive nature of the cherry appeals to Michael and his cousin Simon who,

along with their families, are continuing the business their grandfather Reginald started in 1944. “We just love cherries, and the challenge of growing them better each year. They are difficult to produce and that makes them interesting,” says Michael.

Driven by the desire to delight cherry consumers and building on the wealth of knowledge handed down by previous generations, the Rougets are constantly figuring out ways to make the tastiest cherries available for longer. They use the innovative strategy of growing the most

flavoursome cherry varieties in different geographic regions to vary harvest times and extend the season, rather than growing early or late fruiting varieties of cherry that may not have optimal taste.

Producing the most delectable and nutritious fruit possible also requires cooperation with nature, and this has been key to Koala Cherries’ success: “We like to think of cherries as Mother Nature’s Treat.” Nurturing soils with compost and mulch means happy trees that produce healthy cherries, and synthetic chemical use is kept to a minimum by employing methods such as trapping and baiting for pest control.

When it comes to choosing the perfect cherry, Michael says to look for fruit with green stems and bright skin but don’t judge a cherry by its colour: the darkness of the skin is not always an indicator of sweetness as some varieties are naturally lighter.

The Rouget family are avid consumers of their own cherries - understandable given the effort they put into making them tasty - mostly opting to eat them fresh during the season because they’re too busy to do much cooking. When time allows, though, they will make cherry filled treats such as pavlovas and pies, or for parties a cherry popped into a glass of champagne

The Rougets believe it’s of the utmost importance that consumers know where their food comes from “especially with the food safety concerns of developing nations emerging, Australia has excellent food safety,” explains Michael.

LEIGH COLVILLE’S appointment as executive chef at Radius Bar & Grill, part of Marysville’s Vibe Hotel, has brought him full circle. Raised and educated in Alexandra, Leigh’s career has taken him through many prestigious kitchens, working under top chefs both in Australia and internationally. HAVE YOU ever heard someone say that Valentine’s Day was made up by greeting card companies to sell more cards?

While it’s universally accepted that greeting card companies are laughing all the way to the bank on Valentine’s Day, they can’t take credit for its creation. Way back at the end of the 5th century, Pope Gelasius declared February 14 St Valentine’s Day (possibly in an attempt to hijack the pagan fertility festival of Lupercalia).

By the Middle Ages, Valentine greetings were common in Great Britain and by the 15th century written Valentine’s Day sentiments began to appear. A few hundred years later in the 18th century friends and lovers of all social classes were exchanging tokens of affection or handwritten letters on

Valentine’s Day. It wasn’t until around the end of the 19th century, though, that printed Valentine’s Day cards became popular (so the card companies were actually pretty late on the scene).

And who exactly was Valentine? No one’s quite sure because there are several Saint Valentines and at least a couple who are likely candidates for inspiring Valentine’s Day. Legend has it that one of these Valentines was a 3rd century Roman priest serving under Claudius II. Claudius had decided that single men made better soldiers, so forbade young men from getting married. Valentine thought this was pretty unfair so continued to perform marriage ceremonies for young couples in secret. Eventually he got busted and Claudius ordered he be put to death.

Tammy’s travels . . .

At the mercy of a Thai inmate

I WAS pinned down, I couldn’t move; a Thai prisoner was on my back, punching me, squeezing the air from my lungs and threatening to break my ribs with the pressure of her body on mine.

Lilan is an inmate at Chiang Mai’s Womens Correctional Institute in northern Thailand. She is due for release soon and takes part in the prison’s vocational training program. She is now a qualified masseur and I am at her mercy, receiving my first Thai massage.

“My name is Lilan, everybody calls me Pin.”

Pin is a petite Thai woman; her slight frame belies her actual strength. She has a big smile and a soft voice.

I like her right away.

I’ve never had a Thai massage before; in fact I’ve only ever had one massage. I found the experience awkward and not particularly relaxing; so when Pin began manipulating my limbs into position I became ridged and self-conscious.

“First time?” Pin asked.

I shyly admitted it was.

“Don’t worry. I look after you.”

“If it hurts, you tell me.”

“I look after you,” she said again.

Pin has received more than 180 hours of training and is now skilled in her field.

The governors of the women’s section of Chiang Mai’s prison set up the program to teach inmates employable skills before leaving prison to increase their


chances of finding work and not reoffending. The prisoners who take part in the program also receive a wage for their work, which is kept for their release.

The program educates inmates in a variety of fields, including English, silk weaving, cooking, skills that can be applied in the hospitality industry and along side its massage facility the prison also offers a café, staffed by inmates.

The facility is housed in a beautiful old wooden building, surrounded by tall leafy trees. It’s a relaxing

to wind up here. Inmates that take part in the program aren’t mass murderers or crazed killers; they have committed minor, non-violent crimes, often drug related. But in the end, it really didn’t matter.

The massage culminated in a fine show of WWE-style wrestling maneuvers that required me sitting crossed legged while Pin straddled me from behind. She whipped my body side to side and back and forth, cracking my spine as she went.

Then it was all over.

It was brilliant. I floated back to the change room, collected my things and enjoyed a cup of tea in the garden, leaving Pin to her next client.

This is a busy little place located within the old city. A one-hour Thai massage costs just 180 Thai Baht, about $7. Places fill up quickly and it’s easy to see why. Not only are the massages cheap, but the service is great and hopefully benefits the women who work there.

The centre is located on Ratvithi Road in Chiang Mai’s old city near the Chiang Mai City Arts and Cultural Heritage Centre.

place tucked away amongst Chiang Mai’s bustling city streets and gold-plated temples.

Apart from a sign hanging out front, the only indication it isn’t a typical massage centre are the prison guards.

After a bite to eat in the prison’s café it was time for my massage. I was given some loose-fitting grey-coloured clothes to change into and looked more like a prisoner than my masseur, in her flowing deep purple pants and lilac shirt.

More than 10 beds were dotted around the dimly lit room, along with six chairs for foot massages.

The massage started with Pin washing my feet. If you ever read this Pin, I’m sorry you had to do that; I spent half the day walking around the city in filthy old shoes before my massage.

Then it was onto the bed. Pin maneuvered her body around mine, stretching me this way and that, putting pressure here and there, giving me the occasional round of punches and cracking my bones as she went.

At times it was painful, I should have told her to go easier, but I didn’t. Other times it was wonderfully relaxing.

As she worked my body over Pin quietly chatted and laughed with her fellow inmates and helped the less experienced masseur massaging a man next to me.

Without Pin the man would have been covered in so much Tiger Balm his skin would still be burning.

LOTS OF surprises are promised for the Yea Arts Carnivale over the Australia Day weekend in January, 2016.

Yes, there will be art, music, food, wine and other local produce, but there will also be so much more. This will be the third Arts Carnivale for Yea and the artists, musicians and craftspeople of this historic, pretty town have been preparing for this January’s event since the last one’s finale.

Come and see the marvellous work of local farmers and their families with the imaginative hay-bale art. This will be in Yea and also seen on all approaches to the town, setting the mood for a fun time.

The art show conducted by the Yea Rotary Club will display some wonderful work from renowned local artists using various mediums (other than hay)!

Opening night of the Carnivale is Friday, 22 January at Yea’s remarkable 19th century railway station with its surrounding 11 acres of parkland and playgrounds. The exciting ‘big band’ sound of the fabulous ‘The Redgaters’ will fill the park with swing music reminiscent of the famous Glenn Miller era and make it almost impossible not to want to get up and dance. Meanwhile the kids can enjoy themselves with many of the fun projects on offer and parents can also enjoy the local food and wine.

Saturday sees Yea become a busker town with performers strutting their stuff along the shopping strip. Meanwhile at the beautiful racecourse, the thoroughbreds will be out in force )and we’re not just talking about the horses). The Yea Cup is the feature event of the day, while others will be more interested in the ‘Best Hat Competition’ and the kids

Kids encouraged to get in touch with nature at the Lake Mountain Adventure Kids FestivalTHE ADVENTURE Kids Festival is set to return to Lake Mountain on 5 and 6 December, offering children from the ages of four to 12 nature-based adventure activities across a two day getaway.

This festival offers a wide range of activities and aims to encourage fun, physical activity and a deeper connection with the great outdoors in Victorian families.

Activities offered as part of the event at Lake Mountain include bushcraft, orienteering, tube riding, geocaching, obstacle courses, bush art, bush walking, trail running and mountain biking.

The adverse effects of too much screen time to a child’s wellbeing are well documented. American author Richard Louv coined the term ‘nature deficit disorder’ in 2006 to describe the link between the lack of time spent outdoors and limited connection with nature to behavioural problems, obesity, attention disorders and depression.

Although the Australian Health Department sets out guidelines recommending children over two years spend less than two hours per day looking at screens, a recent study by the University of Western Australia found that 45 per cent of eight year olds were exceeding this, a number which escalated to an alarming 80 per cent for 15-16 year olds.

At a time when children are experiencing far greater levels of screen time than ever before, the Adventure Kids Festival offers an opportunity for a technology detox for young digital natives. Children will have the chance to participate in a range of outdoor activities, learn new skills, and gain an appreciation for the outdoors.

THE EASTERN yellow robin (Eopsaltria australis) is one of the beautiful birds of our bushlands, and can usually be found in many areas around the district.

It is small bird, 15-16cm long, but this still makes it one of the larger Australasian robins. It is yellow on the underside and grey on the topside, with olive-yellow on the rump and an off-white wing bar in flight. Males and females have basically the same plumage colouring, while the young are rufous-brown.

The eastern yellow robin is quite widespread on the east coast of Australia from Cairns in Queensland to the south coast of South Australia and extends inland in these states where suitable forests occur. It will happily live in a wide range of habitats from dry woodlands to rainforests and may also be spotted in parks and gardens.

The robin has a characteristic pose on trees and may be seen standing on the side of the trunk, where it surveys the area for insects, drops to the ground to pick them up, and then flies to another tree where it again stands on the side of the trunk.

Breeding season for the eastern yellow robin is spring. Females build a neat cup shaped nest out of grasses and other vegetation, binding it with spider web and using moss, lichen, bark or leaves for camouflage. Nests are usually built in an upright fork between five and 20 metres above the ground. Breeding pairs may lay up to three clutches of eggs in a season.

The eastern yellow robin is usually very quiet and can be approached closely, especially near the nest. Breeding pairs or small family groups establish a territory and they may move locally from season to season, often between higher and lower ground, but aren’t known to migrate long distances.

We have several areas close to Alexandra where this bird can be found and the closest is McKenzie Reserve at the southern end of Grant Street. A pair was also seen recently on the south Pondage walk at Eildon.

YELLOW BELLY are on the bite big time in Lake Eildon at the moment. Good size and numbers are being reported from one end of the lake to the other.

Bibless crank baits such as Jackalls and Rapalas, spinner baits and even scrub worms and yabbies have all been working well.

Trout are still being caught on assorted Tassie Devils, flat line trolled from Fraser camping ground to Big River and the occasional one being taken from the Alliance Boat Ramp on scrubbies.

The Eildon Pondage is still producing brown trout between 6lb and 9lb with the odd 10lb fish being caught as well.

The dough and Power Baits are still the best way to go, with a couple of rainbows being picked up on the Woolly Bugger fly in Nursery Corner.

Early to mid morning is proving to be the prime time to fish the Pondage, with the water level being somewhat consistent at this time.

Down the Goulburn River, with recent fly hatches, small bead nymphs and Dunn pattern flies have proven successful. Power Bait has been picking up small rainbows towards Thornton, and closer to Alexandra scrubbies and floating Rapalas (in the rainbow trout pattern) are doing well. These techniques are also working in the upper reaches of Big River.

THE BLUE banded bee (Amegilla cingulata) has been described by many as one of Australia’s most beautiful native bees. It is certainly an eye-catching creature with rings of iridescent turquoise along its abdomen, huge green eyes and a fuzzy brown thorax. Stunning as the blue banded bee is, it’s not just a pretty face and its role as a buzz pollinator makes it a welcome guest in the garden, especially the vegie patch.

Some plants hold onto their pollen very firmly, making it difficult for the average pollinator to brush loose. Buzz pollination, also known as sonication, is of great benefit to these plants that keep a tight grip on their pollen; blue banded bees are able to effectively dislodge the pollen by grasping the flower and vibrating their powerful wing muscles, giving the flower a vigorous shake and freeing the pollen for collection.

According to Dr Katja Hogendoorn of the University of Adelaide, buzz pollinators are “important for tomatoes grown


outside, in particular for the home gardener. Also for bush tomatoes. And from my personal observation, eggplant and capsicum benefit in yield from being buzzed, but I don’t know how much.”

Blue banded bees are so efficient at pollinating tomatoes that Dr Hogendoorn spent six years investigating breeding programs that would allow their use in commercial tomato greenhouses as an alternative to manual pollination with a vibration wand. Her research showed that “tomatoes pollinated by blue-banded bees contain more seeds and taste better than hand pollinated tomatoes (124 participants tasted two cherry tomatoes, one pollinated by a blue-banded bee, the other by hand). The bee pollinated tomato was preferred and participants recorded them to have a deeper tomato flavour.”

The blue banded bee leads a solitary, but not an antisocial, existence. Females nest alone in burrows in soft clay, sandstone, mudbricks and even soft mortar in buildings, with many bees often building their nests close to one another. The males who ‘roost’ at night by clinging to plant stems with their mandibles will often choose to hang out near other males.

These flying gems do come equipped with a sting, although it’s mild and they are not aggressive (you’ll need to really annoy one by giving it a good squish, which is no mean feat given they’re exceptionally quick and very difficult to catch!).

Blue banded bees have a darting, hovering flight pattern and the best way to get a good look at them is to wait until they land on a flower to collect nectar or pollen. Keep an ear out too – they have a distinctive droning buzz during flight that sounds quite different from a European honeybee and the buzz they make while shaking the living daylights out of a flower is quite loud.

For the photographers out there, capturing a good image of one of these striking insects poses a challenge because they are fast flyers, but they’re exceptionally photogenic so it’s worth the effort. Photographer Erica Siegel, who has mastered the art of immortalising the image of the blue banded

bee, has this advice: “As to capturing photos of native bees, or any flying small subject for that matter, I recommend the 4 Ps: Passion, Patience, Persistence, Practice. I presently use a Canon 7D Mark II with Canon 100 mm f/2.8 macro lens but have taken blue banded bees with a Panasonic FZ18 with Raynox 250 attached and other Canon cameras. Camera settings I use are Aperture Priority, usually F/4 t o F 5.6, ISO 400 (change according to light condition) always hand held.“

Between October and April is the best time of year to spot one of these little beauties in the Murrindindi area and they generally forage between about 20 and 40 degrees Celsius. They do appear to have a penchant for blue and purple flowers, so keep an eye of for them on lavender, catmint and borage, but they don’t seek out the blue hues exclusively and may be seen darting around salvias of various colours or enthusiastically tending to bright yellow tomato flowers.

If you would like to attract blue banded bees to your garden, Dr Hogendoorn suggests you “plant native plants with blue and yellow flowers. English lavender is a good nectar source for them as well… Make sure the garden has flowers between October and April; while a blue banded bee will live only 3-6 weeks, the species have a long season with several generations.”

Should you happen across a blue banded bee in the garden this summer be sure to stop for a better look at its exquisite markings and if you glimpse one working its sonication magic on your tomato plants give it a great big thanks!

OPENED in August 2014 the Y Water Discovery Centre in Yea has welcomed more than 22,000 visitors through its doors, an extraordinary figure that has exceeded all expectations. All involved with the Centre are delighted with the interest and support that has been received and a glance through the guest book shows just how impressed visitors are with the facility and its many programs and activities.

The school programs have been extremely popular and the Centre has hosted hundreds of students from across regional Victoria and Melbourne who have participated in the half and full day educational programs learning about water resources and wetlands biodiversity.

The guided tours are a popular activity offered to groups wanting to learn more about the amazing array of flora and fauna that can be discovered in the Yea Wetlands. Local volunteer guides lead these tours which include a delicious Devonshire tea featuring locally grown and made produce.

The Centre also incorporates a gift shop stocking a wide range of products including books, maps, games and toys, jewellery, skincare products, local produce and clothing. Many of the items are hand-crafted by local artisans and producers who offer a unique and very special range of products.

Outside there is a picnic area with barbecue facilities, ample onsite parking and a recreational vehicle dump point.

Open seven days a week the Centre is staffed by a team of 40 local volunteers who share their skills,

passion and knowledge of Yea and the Murrindindi region to the many visitors passing through each week.

Walk like an egyptian . . .

Egyptian walking onionsBy Emily Friedel

TO SAY my Egyptian walking onions were neglected would be an understatement. They were abused. Left to fend for themselves for over a year while I lived interstate, they battled through a blistering hot summer with bugger all rain, got alternately drenched and frozen over winter, and were completely overrun with weeds by spring. In fact, I didn’t even know the poor things were still there until I started yanking up the huge tufts of phalaris and sticky weed that had consumed the garden. And there they were, some very sad and soggy little onion bulbs desperately clinging to life.

Egyptian walking onions, also known as tree onions, winter onions or topsetting onions, are actually a hybrid between bulbing onions and bunching onions. Their origins are unknown (they aren’t thought to have originated in Egypt), but they have been around for at least a few hundred years.

Instead of growing flowers at the tops of their stems like other alliums, they grow clusters of miniature bulbs called bulbils or topsets. As the bulbils grow, the stem is weighed down and bends over so the bulbils touch the ground and, if the soil conditions are right, will take root – thus they “walk” across the garden (this may explain the “Egyptian” part.)

Along with the topsets, these enigmatic onions produce shallot-like bulbs that multiply beneath the ground. Between the two modes of reproduction one plant can produce a dozen or more offspring in a

growing season and their scientific name, Allium x proliferum, reflects this.

Their prolific and perennial nature makes them a great option for the backyard vegie garden. I also love the fact that every part of the plant (bulbs, topsets and stems) can be eaten; they are a very efficient use of growing space and mine are quite happily growing in a dense carpet of lettuce, giving them bonus points for space saving.

What makes them truly great in my book, though, is their hardiness. After I pulled those semi-rotten bulbs out of my weed patch and shoved them back into some half-decent soil they took off. A few months later and they are a sea of healthy, bright green stems with rapidly developing topsets. They seem unfazed by the thriving slug population and are not even slightly bothered by harsh frosts.

Planting

Egyptian walking onions (either topsets or bulbs) can be planted year round, except if the ground is frozen. You can separate them into single bulbs or plant as clusters. Topsets will usually take a growing season longer to produce their own topsets than bulbs from the ground. If you’re into very low maintenance

gardening you can just let them walk about, self-propagating!

Growing

They will flourish in a rich, well-draining soil, however high nitrogen levels will reduce the storage life of the onions so avoid applying manures and high nitrogen fertilisers. Full sun is best, although they will tolerate part shade, and they like moist soil but not “wet feet.”

As my accidental year-of-neglect experiment showed, Egyptian walking onions are tough little fellows so will respond enthusiastically to a small amount of kindness. They are even content in containers (more bonus points for space saving).

Harvesting, eating and storing

Stems

Harvest any time, just take a couple from each plant and avoid the ones with topsets. Eat fresh and use them as you would spring onions.

Bulbs

Harvest during late summer and autumn. Bulbs can be used just like normal onions and make an exceptional French onion soup. Bulbs will store for up to a year.

Topsets

Usually harvested from late summer to autumn and are


best taken when the stem has dried out and turned brown. Topset onions are small and spicy and just need to be peeled. They’re perfect for pickling or frying whole, or you can snack on them raw. Topsets will store for up to a year.

Where to get them

Egyptian walking onions can be hard to come by, but local vegetable gardening or seed saving groups are a great place to start. Try places like the Grow Food Network Inc (growfood.net.au) or Violet Town Seed Savers (http://www.violettown.org.au/local/seed-savers).

If you can’t find them locally, try online. I got just 10 bulbs from The Lost Seed (thelostseed.com.au) in April 2013 and now I have a metre square garden absolutely packed with them (imagine how many I’d have if I’d looked after them properly!). The Lost Seed will have bulbs available from December, but they usually sell out pretty quickly so for updates on availability you can sign up to their newsletter.

2015 Summer Art at Old Post Office SeymourTHE 2015 Summer Art at Old Post Office Seymour Art Show opens Sunday 22 November and continues through January. The annual show features a diverse collection of works by internationally acclaimed Australian artists, with Pamela Conder, David Chen and Vida Pearson featuring this year.

PamelaConder–ArtwithOrangutans is a collection of paintings and prints produced collaboratively between the artist and Melbourne Zoo’s orangutans. Pamela has spent a lifetime studying, drawing and interacting with orangutans in zoos around the world. She became aware that many orangutans are

interested in the processes of art. The idea for a series of collaborative creations was born. The six orangutans were allowed choice of colours and a variety of media. They all showed preferences for colours, brushwork and materials. The prints have their origins in the orangutans’ charcoal drawings on paper, or graffiti

drawn around their exhibit when given coloured chalks. These works are much more than just a collection of ‘novelty’ pieces executed by apes.

and Master degrees in Fine Art. He is a highly sought after judge, demonstrator and tutor and has won numerous awards including the prestigious gold medal at Camberwell Art Show in 2013.

In 1989 the French Embassy in Beijing invited him to hold a solo exhibition, however, the exhibition was cancelled due to the unrest in China. He later re-emerged and was selected to participate in ‘100 famous Chinese Artists’, a worldwide travelling exhibition in 1991. In 1992 he won the Silver Hawk Award at the Fourth International Art Contest, France.

VidaPearson–Flora&FaunaLinocuts are collected worldwide. Vida has been a professional artist/printmaker

for over 25 years. In the last 15 years she has concentrated on linocuts. She has a very distinctive style with her brightly coloured, strongly designed works – mostly hand coloured.

Her limited editions, depicting native birds and flowers, rarely exceed 50 and frequently a series sells out quickly. Vida was recently made the 2015 Wildlife Artists Society of Australasia Artist of the Year.

The above three artists will fill the main gallery along with works by other noted artists displayed throughout the multi-roomed heritage building. The Gallery also displays an extensive range of unique and individual jewellery.

THE ALEXANDRA Community Christmas Tree Festival is held annually in Alexandra, at St Johns Church, in the weeks leading up to Christmas, commencing 11 December.

Trees of all different shapes and sizes are beautifully and creatively decorated, some in memory of loved

ones, by businesses, organisations, schools, families and individuals within the community and put on display for everyone to see. There will be a special visit from Santa, where you can even have your picture taken. Entry to the event is a gold coin donation.

The festival was started by Fr Geoff

Poliness, Peter Pierce and St Johns parishioners but is now run by the community. It has grown each year and last year displayed more than 70 trees. This year it is hoped to have over 100 trees on display.

DURING November and December, Gallery 34 in Yea is delighted to feature the work of two extremely talented artists, Janet Matthews and Darren Gilbert.

Janet is well known for her signature style of detailed, realistic wildlife artworks using an exciting combination of coloured pencils and graphite, capturing the personality and humour of her subjects. Janet has created some gorgeous new work for this exhibition, featuring birds and animals, all inspired by the theme of ‘reflection’.

Darren is a multi-skilled artist who, for this exhibition, has

created beautiful, detailed pen drawings using wildlife as his subjects. He has a fascination with birds, but has also created drawings of sea creatures and other animals. Also included in this exhibition are some newly created sculptures using Darren’s usual interesting mixture of recycled machinery, wooden sleepers, and other items.

Several years on, ‘Repeating Patterns’ marks the fifth exhibition of Cindy’s photography to be held at Rustic Simplicity, and her third solo exhibition.

This solo exhibition is a

showcase of a different style of her works – photos taken over the last five to six years along a ‘patterns’ theme, some printed on stone.

The artist hopes to have an extensive exhibition catalogue available for her show, which tells the story of the accompanying narrative running through the works, an exploration of old patterns, and how the way we now virtually view the world can change the way we actually experience the past, present and potential events in our lives.
