PROJECT DESCRIPTION

An Institute with buildings up to 5-storey high

were to be constructed over soft clay.

As the underlying soil was highly compressible,

it was proposed that the soil be consolidated

before construction of building foundations to

minimize post-construction settlement.

Settlement:

� Total post construction settlement

shall not exceed 10% of primary

consolidation after completion of work.

� Seven (7) years post construction

settlement shall not exceed 10% of

the sum of the total theoretical

primary consolidation settlement and

secondary settlement. In addition,

total post construction settlement shall

not exceed 250 mm.

� Within the first seven (7) years of

service, the differential settlement

shall not exceed 100 mm within a

length of 50 m in areas of transition

between piled approach embankments

and general low embankment or 100

mm within a length of 100 m in areas

remote from structures and transition

zones.

MENARD SOLUTION

Prefabricated Vertical Drain (PVD) +

Surcharge (by others) was installed to

accelerate rate of consolidation and

improve soil undrained shear strength.
