Happy Birthday

Royal Durban Golf Club, one of South Africa’s venerable sporting institutions, was founded in 1892 and got the “Royal” Status in 1932. This popular links type golf course is a challenge to the playing field with narrow fairways, punishing rough and fast greens.

Durban Country Club boasts the unique claim of being the only course on the African continent to be rated in the “Top 100 Golf Courses of the World” by Golf Magazine USA and is rated in the top 11 in South Africa by Golf Digest SA. One of the defining characteristics of Durban Country Club are the massive undulations in the fairways. The par five 3rd hole is one of the most photographed holes in South African golf, and is ranked one of the 18 finest holes in the entire world.

It has been pleasing to note the increase in participation at our golf days.

The Championships & Annual Dinner on 30th October was a resound-ing success and great fun.

48 members entered the Championships and we had 102 guests for dinner, which included some of our Non-Playing members: Paul & Linda Pelser, Tony & Marianne Godycki and Thys & Roberta Pretorius.

The new portable PA system passed the test when it was first used at the dinner.

Best Gross Winner: Rinus van Niekerk with a gross score of 76.

On 10 October the game at Silver Lakes was suspended due to rain and the competition was decided on 13 holes.

November was the ninth month of the ancient Roman calendar and has retained its name from the Latin novem meaning “nine”.

McDonald’s opened its first restaurant in South Africa in November 1995. Today, McDonald’s operates 170 restaurants countrywide. South Africa is one of the most successful markets in McDonald’s international history. A record was set when South Africa opened 30 restaurants in just 23 months, at one stage opening 10 restaurants in 78 days. Currently more than 97% of all food served in McDonald’s restaurants is produced by local South African suppliers to McDonald’s highest quality standards.
