You can imagine just how excited, and a little nervous we
were to hear that Katies family was coming to Jordan for a
visit. This would be the first time that Jodi, Katies Mum and
one of our trustees would see Katies Readers in action. Gill
Christou invited some of our key volunteers to a lovely coffee
morning where everyone got to know each other. Jodi had
lots of questions as to the reasons and roles our volunteers
chose to take on and she was amazed at the passion and
dedication that was displayed. To mark this very special occasion we launched our very own
Katies Readers polo shirts which Jodi and our volunteers love
and now wear with pride when going into the classroom. We
are not selling them publicly yet but if you would like make a
private order just let me know.
5Hail & Farewell
and Jake!A few days later Jodi and Katies not so little brother Jake,
joined us in the girls classroom. As always the girls were
eager to welcome our new volunteers and were not at all
distracted by a boy in the mix! Jake joined right in with the
activities, offering us some very valuable feedback and
ending up being our photographer!
It was such a pleasure to have Katies family with us and
we all had such a wonderful time hope they come back
soon!

KELLANS COFFEE MORNING
What a great turn out at Kellans coffee morning! We were introduced to
an amazing group of women who listened attentively to our
presentation. The interest was high and a number of volunteers even
jumped right into the classroom almost immediately! Even those who
are unable to volunteer their time have very kindly begun to spread the
word of Katies Readers. THANK YOU KELLAN for hosting such a
lovely morning!
If you are interested in hosting your own Katies Readers coffee
morning,

END OF YEAR PARTY!!
How can one possibly show enough appreciation to such a fabulous team of volunteers? A Secret Santa of course!
Seventeen of our fabulous volunteers showed up to our party with a gift in hand. Just to make it a little more fun we
added a twist to the rules, allowing each person in turn to steal a previously opened gift from someone else or open
their own package. It was extremely amusing to see ordinarily reserved and well behaved ladies trying to decide if
they should take a gift away from another. Talk about leaving your comfort zone!!! So much fun was had by all and
each left with a well deserved gift and a personalized gingerbread cookie!!
THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR SUPPORT

In The Classroom
CRAFTS
It doesnt take much material to bring outcreativity in children; a few sequins, somerecycled cans and a pot of glue can all betransformed into a beautiful pencil holder. We love to see the concentration on the facesas the children focus on their crafts and the
pride they experience when they see thefinished product.
MOVEMENT
More and more research is showing that
movement is the key to learning, with that inmind we ensure that during every lesson wetake the children outside to move their bodiesif only for 10 minutes. Whether we play withballs, hoola hoops or parachutes the childrenare better preparing their brains for moreefficient learning, and having fun at the sametime!
READING
A Katies Readers session would not becomplete without books. Although at thisstage the children cannot fully follow a storyin English, or read themselves, they certainlyget the idea with the help of our dynamic andanimated volunteers. The children arebeginning to really look forward to andappreciate every story time!

We simply could not do the work we do without the dedication andcommitment of all of our volunteers. Whether they spend theirtime in the classroom, cutting out crafts, organizing coffeemornings or spreading the word of Katies Readers, we trulyappreciate each and every one of them. The transient nature ofmany of our volunteers has advantages and disadvantages; on
one hand there are always new volunteers arriving, on the other
Hail Farewelland
Paula TessaIt was only in our last newslettethat I introduced Tessa as one oour most enthusiastic volunteersIt is with great sadness thatoday we bid farewell.
Tessa has been committed tKaties Readers ever since hevery first coffee morning. Heinvolvement has been of greavalue in so many ways and wwill really miss her presence.
Tessa will be basing herself in thUK as her husband takes a job iVietnam. She promises to comback to Jordan for visits (angolf!).
SoulaSoula joined Katies Readers inthe very early days when sheresponded to our flyer in the ICSnewsletter. Showing a very keeninterest in supporting KatiesReaders she immediatelyorganized a coffee morning at
her home which resulted in a therecruitment of what became avery valuable team of volunteers.Soula recently left Jordan toreturn to her home in Cyrpus buther contribution to KatiesReaders will always beappreciated.
Paula is not new to Jordan butshe is a brand new member ofour volunteer team and we arevery lucky to have her.
We met Paula at Kellans coffeemorning, a qualified teacher, who was very eager to get intothe classroom. Luckily we were
just about to begin our programin the boys school for the firsttime and Paula immediately
jumped at the opportunity to join the team. Since then shehas worked with the boys andthe girls and is always eager tooffer her support. We lookforward to working with Paulafor as long as she is here in
Jordan.
Thank you!

Help!As volunteers come and go andour project evolves the help werequire from volunteers forever
changes. How would you like tohelp?
Library
The time has come to catalogue
all our books. We have decided
on a very efficient and colourful
organizational method and soon
will have all the tools and
materials to do the job. We are
looking for a small team of
volunteers to help go through,
sort and catalogue the books in
the near future.
IT
AAHH my nemesis!!!! We do
have a website shell all ready
for order and content. Anyone
who has ANY confidence in
web design, or would even like
to have a go at it PLEASE
come and have a look at what
we have already. With NOOBLIGATION!!!
In the Classroom
This term we will be adding a
new class to our schedule. A
wonderfully dynamic, small
group of 5th grade girls is very
keen to practice their English
with native speakers. This class
will differ from the younger
groups as the focus will be
conversation through reading
books, drama, games etc... If
you are interested in giving an
hour of your time once a week
to this great group of girls do
contact us.
Newsletter
Ever dreamed of being a
journalist? We are always
looking for volunteers to
format, write short articles,
take photos or contribute in
any way to our newsletter. How about your own column?
Crafty Volunteers
We mean that in the nicest
possible way! This is a fun
filled morning preparing the
lesson packs for the classroom
with Gill. No major creative
skills are required, just theability to cut on a straight line
while laughing!!!
Volunteer Coordinator
If you are interested in any of the above volunteer opportunities or
in fact, you have other skills you would to contribute to Katies
Readers please contact our volunteer coordinator
Gillian Golborne [email protected]
CHILDRENS BOOKS
Of course all of the childrens
books we collect go directly
into our Katies Readers
library. We also welcome
games and toys with
educational value
ADULT BOOKS
Any adult fiction books we
receive we place our Katies
Readers sticker on and pass
them out to various locations
around town. This helps us
get the word out about our
project. Le Meridien Hotel has
its very own Katies Readersbook swap in the executive
lounge.
OTHER BOOKS
All other books; old text books
etc will be recycled into
amazingly creative pieces of
art!
