The shock defeat of University Blacks by North Old Boys left Geelongtwo games clear at the top of the B Section ladder. It was the Blacks' secondsuccessive defeat, as they went down by three goals to Old Scotch the previousweek . However Old Scotch failed by 12 points against St . Bernard's anddropped to fourth place, which they hold only on percentage from North OldBoys .

There was also a big upset in E Section where AJAX toppled the leaders,Reservoir Old Boys, by 17 points.

Monash trailed De La Salle untilwell into the third quarter but a 6-goal burst in this term carried themto the front and they won by 4 pointsin an exciting finish . This win broughtMonash level with M .H .S . on points, and they are outside the four by amere 2.7 per cent.

University Blues wasted manyscoring opportunities in the secondquarter against Ormond, and shouldhave had a much greater lead thanone point at half-time . Ormond out-played them in the second half andwent on to win by 41 points, kicking7-2 in the second quarter and 7-3 inthe third . Blues managed only 5•14after the first quarter .

Coburg were too strong in the ruck

and showed better teamwork thanIvanhoe and were untroubled to winby more than 8 goals . Old Paradiansgained an early break on Collegiansand then held them off to score by 17points .

Commonwealth Bank and Kew werelocked in an even struggle withBank's better kicking enabling themto win by 6 points . Geelong were nottroubled by Old Xaverians and wonby 11 goals .

North Old Boys forged ahead of theBlacks in the second quarter andgreater accuracy in front of goal alsohelped in their 26-point win, as theyhad only one more scoring shot .

A 7-goal burst in the third termwas a big factor in St . Bernard's winover Old Scotch, who led by 4 pointsat the interval .

Great play by "Harpo" Jackson inhis debut with the seniors for Or-mond last week. This lad looks likehe will be around for quite some timeand what a great come back after aserious knee injury.

Charlie Cody's great running goalfrom the houndary line was one ofthe highlights of Ivanhoe reserves finewin last week . Charlie's mate Joeproved he was no slouch, either, bydobbing an "impossible" left footer inthe hectic last quarter.

chance were somewhat reduced atthe hands of Fairfield last week, when the home team kept the pres-sure on and went away to a com-fortable win in the last quarter.Trin's third quarter comeback wasably led by Kleinert, Hudson andIan Hobbs but they didn't haveenough support from their team-mates to take full advantage of theiropportunities . UMPIRE'S Ca'ORNER"WELL DONE JACK POX"

The life members of our associa-tion will early this month welcometo our ranks, our only goal umpirelife member Jack Pox, who will beofficially raised to the peerage at ourannual dinner .

Jack, one of our most popular flag-wavers is most deserving of thishonour, he has always been a towerof strength to the field umpires, especially to those just breaking into"A" Section .

The writer had the privilege of thisfine gentleman in the goals for hisown final match last year, and hiscounsel to a very nervous umpire onthat day was greatly appreciated.

A former Hawthorn committeeman,Jack has spent a lifetime in football, has a vast knowledge of the game :and is now a true fan of AmateurFootball .

He has officiated at all our major, games, A and B Section finals andnumerous interstate fixtures, hasgained the confidence of players andumpires and at the end of this yearJack will become eligible for theexclusive "Umpires 200 Club" .

Jack - we know you are a strictteetotaller, but perhaps on The Night,we may be able to persuade you totry just a Small sherry .

Congratulations from all your teammates .

Ex president Harry Marks and cur-rent chief Brian Hagarty reallyturned it on at a recent social functionwith a rendition of "Rock AroundThe Clock" .

Critics say they will never be al-lowed to sing again, Brian didn'tfront the PT instructor the followingweek said he had Hong Kong Flu?Norm Sharpe reckons the way theysing they should both be exiled toHong Kong.

Printed without comment "it is only

necessary to have two teams on thefield to commence play" .

Brian Nicholl s - are you happynow that a member of the UmpiresCommittee has seen you in action?or did he!

One of our umpires must be a"Hippie" . He continually leaves hisshoes in the room after training --perhaps he sings "barefoot in thedark" .

Trevor still swears he was pushedoff that chair .

LL BRIEF SFifty games up to "Lefty" Wright

of Ormond . A dashing and reliabledefender "Lefty" has held his placeon the half-back line for a long timeand on current form looks like beingthere for 100 games. Keep it up"Lefty" .

After a good start University Bluescould only score 3 goals in the secondhalf and lost to Ormond by a bigmargin. Some inaccurate kicking inthe last quarter by Blues forwardskept them from getting back into thegame, and was in direct contrast toOrmond's work around goal . JohnMoylan made a welcome return tothe side, and Ron Green found chas-ing the football more to his likingthan chasing rocks. No doubt about"Heinz-Ade" - he plays much betterwhen he can see what's going on !

Greg Borchers impressed in his firstgame with Ivanhoe seniors last week, finishing with three goals and severalclose misses . Meanwhile, in the re-serves, brother Grant chalked upanother strong display .

Collegians, with relegation staringthem in the face played desperatefootball but finally went down in thelast quarter, Parade swamped Colle-gians in the first quarter and he'dthem to point score. Collegians cameback in the 2nd quarter and held theirown in the 3rd, but went down duringthe last few minutes of play. Thewindy or blustery weather did nothelp us either, our best on the daycame from Chris Roach for splendidtry all day, Phil Pryor, Bob Zent, RobWebster, Alex McKenzie (his firstsenior game for nearly 2 years follow-ing a broken leg last season duringtraining), John Shinkfield.

Graham Atchison of Caulfield Gram-marians consistently kicks goals fromseemingly impossible angles. Hisstyle of kicking whilst not very sty-lish has proven to be very accurate .

Keep it up "Atch" - its a highlightof the game .

Everyone at Monash was delightedto hear of Ian Chappel's engagementlast Friday week, and we wish Ianand Christine every success for thefuture . The Monash players who arewagering that the Press Correspondentwill be next, can now collect theirmoney. The team manager and chiefPie Seller think that Pam is a sweetietoo !

Congratulations from De La Salleto Jack and Allison Dillon on thearrival of their baby boy - thirdtime lucky.

North Old Boys played a stronggame last week to come out com-fortable winners against Uni Blacks, and continue to press their claims fora position in the final four. Bob Spur-ling dominated the game at centrehalf back and was well backed-up byBrian Drew on the flank.

Once again Pat Considine and JimTaylor of St . Bernards organised anexcellent Dinner Dance last Saturdaynight, and everybody in attendancehad a great night. It was the rightvenue for celebrating two good winsagainst Old Scotch.

Ron Punshon and Graeme Leonardboth played their 50th game for theFootseray Tech last week . Both youngplayers Bone and Pash have beenpermanent members of the seniorteam since their final under-age days3 years ago. Both played well lastweek and must mention Ron finishedwith 6 goals .

Toonnnga - Malvern Reserves aredown but definitely not out. Underextreme difficulties capt/coach AdrianSalor did a terrific job . Pat Sheedyand Joe Boucek in defence, PhilCogan, Reid McLachlan, also elderlygentlemen Bert Liddell and JockJohnston never gave up trying . Spec-ial mention to "Fatty" Downs andbattler Paul McLean .

Ball Briefs - continuedJohn Skerry got a new Alphington

-jersey, as small as possible, but it- still hangs on him. The Hon. Sec.suggested that a number painted onthe back of a sock would be a betterfit; but don't be fooled John is nogutless wonder. He has all the heartand courage of a player four timeshis size.

Assumption fielding a side of youngin-form players with a couple of starssuffering from a bad patch had littledifficulty in accounting for the Com-bine . The main pleasing feature wasthe rediscovery of the major openingsby skipper Maurie Beaumont whotopped off his consistent perform-ances around the ground by bootinga quintet of goals . Big Des Tuck con-tinued to give the forward line itslife blood and "Scooper" bobbed upeverywhere in the first half. Withthe advent of the finals, all that isneeded now is for the out-of-formbig names to click and the superbearly season form can once again beseen from the Blues .

Congratulations to Old Haileybury'scentreman, Andrew Williams on play-ing his 50th last week . May yournext 50 come up as quickly.

OM's seemingly with the match intheir grasp kicked badly in the lastquarter to lose in a close encounter .Ian Smith and Mick Loughlin onceagain provided great drive from thewings ; Greg White continued his goodform with a fine performance in theruck and received solid support fromTony White, Pete Robertson and PeteRattray (who has had a six-weeklay-off through injury) roved well andcapped off their work well in. the for-ward pocket . Coach Dick Hallo playshis 50th game this week after an in-terrupted season through injury andwe wish him well.

U.H.S. Old Boys congratulate Johnand Shirley Barker on their first addi-tion to the family - a girl . Other

achievements in the boy meets gifrace this season have been the marriages of Max Johnston, Bruce Pascoand Norm Foss and the enegagemenof Barry Masenhelder.

At last A.M.P. have put four quarters together, the result illustratin ;just how even the top six teams areThe dry track was worth waiting fcand will be appreciated around final;time. °OJessa" McHugh was the trum;in defence with "Los" Taylor not fa.behind . "Sparrow" struck paydirt an("Slug" returned to form mid-fieldMax was in brilliant form and onl3some inaccurate pings prevented hirrmaking a bigger mess of "PoisorPen's" favourite full-back. Today i ;"so long Geelong" day A .M.P .s .

A determined last quarter effort irwhich we outscored the oppositiorkicking into the wind saw St . KildzCBOC's reserves keep their final fourhopes alive by defeating HamptorRovers. Roger MeBurney played a finegame in the centre whilst Tony Sher-man and Jack White proved that classwill always come out on top in therespective key positions .

Despite pretty good kicking in dif-ficult conditions two of Old Geelong'sforwards were not too happy abouttheir efforts last Saturday. Tony Wal-ker hit the post from the edge ofthe goal square and John Spiden mis-sed two deliberate shots from within20 yards. However "Spido" certainlymade up for it with a couple of greatsnap shots . They should have watch-ed Reserves Geoff Grantham andBarry "I love being captain" Laws.

Special mention for ex- Glenhuntlyplayer Colin Nathan and best wishesto Colin and Meka from the club onyour coming marriage . Photo's indi-cate Colins judgement to be as goodas ever! "Tiddy" and "The Bomber"were in good form and new blood inthe reserves showed signs of payingdividends .

Ball Briefs - continued°Bomnmaf° O'Malley brings up his

fifty games with St. Kevin's Old Boysthis week. Bomma is a wide, robottype of player not known for his highmarking and clearing dashes . Congrats Bomma andeveryone at the club hopes you goon from here.

Old Trinity's Bruce Kleinert playshis 50th game for the club today .Despite his unsuspecting appearance,Bruce has given many a half backopponent a nightmare, with his dash-ing, constructive play . Bruce is one ofthe few forwards in the club whodelivers the ball downfield correctly, always giving his forwards an oppor-tunity to capitalise . CongratulationsBruce, and in the words of that in-famous T .V. host (we hope) "TheBest is yet to Come" .

Congratulations to Kevin Ward whoplayed his 50th game for Parksidelast week. Since joining the clubKevin has put in several fine gamesfor the reserves, including quite a fewin recent matches, and all Parksidershope it will not be too long beforeKevin becomes a regular member ofthe senior side . Kevin's determinedtear through clearing dashes are cer-tainly a highlight of his game, andare just what the supporters need intoday's game to make up for the threeParkside teams' dismal performanceslast Sat . After these words how canyou do anything but make today'seffort a matchwinner, Kevin .

Tooronga - Malvern Juniors keptalive their finals chances with a bigwin over National Bank, broughtabout by good teamwork in whichGraham Watts and Robert Cowenplayed a big part with quick thinkingand fast exchanges, and keeping thegame moving at a brisk rate .

St . Pat's Ballarat congratulate vete-ran Bill Smurthwaite on his engage-ment to Gernrgie . It appears sinceGeorgie spends most of her time now, down at Timboon that old saying`absence makes the heart grow fon-der' has stirred William to poppingthe question . Well done Bill andGeorgie.

In a performance of premiershipstandard La Trobe covered themselvesin glory by kicking an "E" Graderecord and thus giving a fillip to theirpercentage `Ghucker' Gilchrist --notched nine goals, `O' Shea'- Hailbest man afield, `Electricity' Sparkesand `Ruffy' Porrsa - great first games .Outstanding in the Reserves were-'Nose' Lamont, `Buckets' Hall, `Hyp .n'Flanagan and Gibbs `land'. The 'Shag'bagged three and `Comic' Witte heldhis end up .

Congratulations to Ajax SeniorXVIII who caused the upset of theseason when they defeated top sideReservoir Old Boys . In a courageousdisplay, the Ajax defence made theball their objective . Stars for Ajaxwere Maurice Rubenstein, BarrySmorgon, Maurice Herzfeld, HenryJolson and Gary Fell. Well done Ajax- one of your best wins in club,his-tory, and proof of that old club spiritand fighting quality.

Old Brighton Reserves found sev-eral new stars last week . Peter An-drew snagged four, as did "Roddy"Sanders. "Curls" Young showed ,hispotential as a centreman, Bruce Ham-ilton looked more like a rugby .player, while Roger "Joe" Wilson certainlycarried his weight .

If Briefs - continuedCongratulations to R.O .B.'s Reser-

ves on another fine win, especially toJeff (Takus) Trevascos for his 7 greatgoals . Unfortunately the same con-gratulations cannot be extended tothe lst eighteen side. It was a verycostly defeat against Ajax, we havedropped to third place, and today'sgame against La Trobe will decidewho is to get the 2nd chance in thefinals .

St. Kilda CBOC Juniors were un-lucky not to win their first game forthe season last Saturday . With theschool-kids returning to the side theside became more balanced and team-ed together better. With the rainslowing down the game in the lastquarter, St. Kilda kicked 8 points forthe term throwing away victory. Withthe return (I hope) of the three Jun-iors in the Firsts soon, St . Kilda willshow further improvement. Amongstthose to show out were Rod McDon-ald, "Barnie" Burnett, Chris Halpinand "Hairy" Quirk who increased his"bag" of goals to three for the sea-son .

Brunswick showed better team-work in defeating Old Camberwell ina game that was closely contested allday . Their defence led by John (Hair)Hirst proved too strong for the oppo-sing forwards .

Another player who will reach the50 game milestone for Parkside todayis Ray Moore. Ray was introduced tothe club about three years ago byone of the Parkside stalwarts in NormWilloughby, and has been a valuableasset in the big man department eversince. Even though Ray has playedmost of his games in the reservessince joining Parkside, he would be-come a regular senior side member ifhe could just hold those spectacularmatchwinning marks, and use hisbody to better advantage in many

ruck duels. All Parksiders wish youwell in today's game, and hope youturn in a beauty, Ray .

What a complete footballer AllanGraham is . This Ormond star lastweek finished up with sore handsand feet after the number of marksand kicks he collected throughoutthe game. Terry Crampton, PeterSierakowski, and Jeff Briggs alsohad a big hand in things and arebecoming big cogs in a big wheel .

Alan Cockerell, Gordon Jones andPeter Hoey played well all day forT-M's as did "Whiskers" Wilson un-til he ran out of steam.

Ivanhoe's Coulter brothers cer-tainly stick together when things geta bit tough. Brian was quick on thescene last week when brother Peterstruck a bit of early trouble . Laterin the game the boys went their ownthe forward line and Brian ("Bobways, Peter marking strongly onMurray") rucking effectively.

With injuries being very preval-ent at St. Bernard's this year, the ef-fort of the reserves side last Satur-day was excellent in the way theybeat last years premiers Old Scotch .One of the main reasons for the im-proved form of the reserves is thegreat form being shown by°°Chocka" Merrick and along withall the other players an overduepremiership could result this year.

Footscray Tech scored their firstwin of the season by swamping Al-phington last week All players com-bined well, played in front and show-ed more determination than in pre-vious games. Good players werePeter Griffiths, Geoff Fletcher, MickMaddox and many others . Mustmention goal-sneak Pete's 7 majorslast week also cost your press cor-respondent 2 bottles at the dinnerdance last Saturday.

Ball Briefs continued

There .. -are no - consulation prizesfor'running, second, but De La Sallemust be ' congratulated on their mor-al victory against Monash . Best players were David Whitelaw, MarkJansoiz, ` Ian Geddes and David Bro-man .

Terry O'Neill and "Butch" Meehanwere, the prominent plays in NorthOld Boys Reserves team last week .After an excellent first half, Northslipped badly in the third term andlet the opposition gain complete con-trol . A concentrated effort by 18players will see much more favour-able results in the future .

Collegians Reserves had a com-fortable win over Parade, and des-pite the scores had the majority ofplay, our opposing side never gaveup and made Collegians earn thewin. Acting coach John Moodie inform at the spearhead, kicked 3 goalsand helped in several others . Beston the day came from R. Day, DannyTro:gn, Benjamin Opie, Mike Troon,WinduSt.

Monash Highlights : - John VanElden's fine game around the packs .- Peter Bonn's good marking andruck work - Doug Bartley's longdashes --John Graham's sharp playin the centre - Chris Cole's fineruckwork -- Phil Knight's meantough football on the half-backflank .

Dave Jasper, the Alphington No .1 backstop (do anything for anybodywithout being asked twice) was cal-led upon to make up the numbersfor Alphington Reserves. Wecouldn't be sure that he was pleasedor' not- at that moment, but whenTony O'Shea collected him from theFootscray Hospital later on in theafternoon there was little doubtabout his feelings . Still, he man-aged to get home without incident

and was working like a hero allnight at Eric's turn, dislocated shoul-der and all .

Assumption Reserves victory look-er pleasing on paper . However, look-ing through the side and seeing thatonly four of the twenty had not hadsenior experience, the effort couldhave been better yet. With seniorplayers "Stooge" Nugent,Howe, "Old Timer" Evans, and"T.W" Fitz. to return in the nextcouple of weeks, as well as "Arthur"Maybon and "Tim" McDonald, pres-sure is on all players, including somewho think their selection is almostautomatic, to give 100% effort attraining and in matches . Of. the lessfavoured players, Graham Ritchieadded his best game ever to hisrecent consistent performances andmust be hard to displace. Thecomeback kids "Darky" Shaw, EddyO'Halloran and Chris Jeacle werebest of the others.

In a high-scoring game, forwardsplayed a dominating part for Too-ronga-Malvern juniors and in this

respect . Bill Leifting and Paul Mit-chell played a big part . WayneStokes played a great game at cen-tre half back blocking most forwardmoves by the opposition . A specialvote of thanks to Liev Zobie andGreg Cullen who, although on theinjured list, stripped to make upthe side, and both played excellent-ly, a fine example of team spirit .

OM's Reserves folded in the lasiquarter to go down for the seconcweek in a row. Ross Campbell an(Harvey Tartakover played well iTdefence but were not very well supported. Les Caldwell in the centreDave Molloy and Charlie Pitts itthe ruck generated plenty of driv, but unfortunately Peter Murphy wathe only forward to capitalise oithe opportunities .

Sall Briafs continuedGood to see Old Haileybury Re-

serves' ruckman Gil . Urkuhart start-ing to hit top form again, after mis-sing most of the season through in-jury. Keep up the good work, Gil,and we might see you back in thefirts in time for the finals .

There's a strange disease goingaround U.H.S . Old Boy's - Satur-day Night disease which has beenknown to affect quiet a few play-ers . Runner Lindsay Knox seems tosuffer very badly each week, es-pecially last Saturday.

Six goals down at half-time, stilltrailing at the last change and kick-ing into a cross breeze in the lastqunarter . This was the unenviablesituation which faced St. KildaCBOC last week but we attackedfor almost all of the last quarter torun out comfortable winners . Poor

shooting for goal was a bad point ofour display as was our indifferentfirst half . Geoff Blackie, Peter Field, and Tony Dynon were the few whoseemed interested in the first halfbut it was a team that eventuallybound together and won the game.

Footseray Tech Reserves scored an,easy win against little opposition last'week Both Cal Taylor and "Energy"Flett marked everything all' day onthe back line and drove the ball intoattack at every chance . Don Huffermade a good comeback to the forwardflank and was instrumental in .manyforward moves .

A welcome return to the seniorside for Brunswick's Peter Maher,Lee Gordon and Chris Meyers allthese players helped in the "Wicks"good win .

200 TO GLENHUNTLY'S BARTONRay Barton gets those well deser-

ved congratulations on playing his200th amateur game at Glenhuntly to-day. "Barts" superb judgment andcomplete concentration can always berelied upon, and in "big" games Rayis at his best. His "best on theground" in the '69 grandfinal will longbe remembered . Recent games showhe will be in the best players for along time yet - well done Ray!

FIRST 150 GAMES TO ST .BERNARD'S

'ongratulations to Mick Perrett onbeing the first player to reach the 150game milestone with St. Bernard's .Mick has been with the club since itbegan in 1963 and over the years hasbeen a great player and has helpedthe club both as a commiteeman andas assistant coach . All connected withthe club hope that this year Mick cancoach a premiership team after thedisappointment of being runner u pover the last three seasons .

Page 24

Our thanks to Eric and Jean Coombsfor putting on such a wonderful nightlast Saturday for the Alphington easy-beats . All facilities for an enjoyablenight were provided and, as we sus-pected, the organisation was bang onall night.

OLD IVANHOE BOYS AMONGTHE GAMES

This week is a big week for OldIvanhoe . Jeff Stagg becomes our first100 game player since the club star-ted in 1964. At the same time JohnMcKenzie and Graha~n Flannery willbe playing game number 50 . Lets seeif the reserves can really turn it onwith a win to celebrate the occasion .

Hello P.P . ; Bleeder; Pussy Cat :Commonwealth Bank struck the jack-pot at last when a close result wentour way. We led all day, but onlyhad a goal in hand at the end . Thestandard was marred by the swirlingwind and the rain in the last quart-er didn't help matters . In looking fora highlight, I would say our centrelinecarried the day . Good individual per-formances were turned in by NeilTorrens, John McGibbony, RichardHorban, Wayne McCrimmon, GeorgeSaynor and old "tired legs" O'Brien. The Reserves just failed again afterleading for most of the game . I spot-ted John White, Keith Brown, KevinMcNally, Steve White, Jeff Langs-worth and Tony Clarke all gettingtheir share of kicks . Pussy Cats mobdid the right thing by CommonwealthBank by beating OLD XAVS . I seeBleeder had a happy result, but Poi-son Pen would be disppaointed . Stillall of you look like playing in thefinals you lucky devils . Today is likea grand final for us as we have Steakand Kid's mob on our plate. Who-ever loses will find it hard to stay inB section and guess who this scribewill be barracking for ?

Signing off - Gympie .

From Here There continued200th TO AJAX STAR

George Mehl, well known AJAXi ootbailer plays his 200th game forthe club today . George (the umpire'sfriend) had a fantastic run of 197consecutive games and has been thetarget of many interesting duels .George's greats include his memorable, ames in defence in the early 60'sand his recent brilliant form in thereserves . All at AJAX congratulateGeorge on his service as a player and-reat clubman .

CENTURY AT ST. KEVIN'SPaul Doherty's game last week made

it one hundred with St . Kevin's OldBoys, during his years with the club,'Doc' has been an exmaple to all withhis strong and determined play . Heholds the record for number of con-secutive games played, namely nine-ty-six - it took appendicitis to puthim on the sidelines earlier this year .Even reserves coach Barry Daltonagrees his no 'hypo' and that's highpraise indeed . Congratulations "Doc"and great work as social secretary.

Greetings fellow scribes . The Bleed-e:- is still grinning. the reasons forwhich I will let you guess (of courseit would have nothing to do withFairfield winning again) we were assis-ted on our winning way by some pro-digious kicking from Lindsay "DropPunt" Findlay and some sneakyground play by Mario "Jezza" Cap-oldi. Both of whom were ably assis-ted by the cock-roach . Heard a whis-per that Parkside went down. butas yet I haven't herd anything ofGympie's or Pussy Cat's teams (its tooearly to read a paper, yet) .

See you next week Bleeder.

CAR PARKINGCars must he parked as directed at

Elsternwick Park, otherwise they willbe refused admittance to the ground .

I'll betya all smiles this week Bice-de:, buddy when you learnt Fairfieldwere a full game clear of Parkside onthat premiership ladder. My contri-bution was foiled in arriving on timewhen I found out our friendly editor,George McT was commuting inter-statewith our Amateur representativeteam on Monday - hope you had agood time George, and did not leadany of the lads astray . Apparentlythe hard ground found out our twosenior sides, after playing and train-ing on the soft Pitcher Park lake allthe season, with only Kevin Clarke,Bill Rodda, Mario Sammut and BrianHarvey showing out with their bril-liant speed and clever play . Tom"Terrific" Johnston returned to formin the ~ eserves, but unfortunately hecould be lost to the club for the restof the season as he may have to gointo hospital. Bounce back soon "TomTom". Jim "Hawkins" Byrne also re-turned after injury, but could not hearrested for piracy on his display .Another reserves player the firmground suited was Bruce Prosser whoproduced slightly more dash than us-ual and received a mention. Top ofthe ladder to you Bleeder until wemeet, Poison Pen .

Greetings Gympie, Bleeder and ThePen. Well we won again and I seethe Blacks and Old Scotch went downto North and St. Bernards . Not to betaken lightly, we face these sides inthe last two rounds. But first Blackstoday should be a thriller and here'shoping.

Don't know whether Old Scotch'safter match "record" was shatteredlast week by the Old Xaverians . LouZachariah was still in the west soperhaps not. Report result later .Trevor Gowers will be disappointed ifit's not as he and many others werestill "firing" when stumps weredrawn.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA, WIN CARNIVA LSouth Australia took the honours in the eleventh Australian Amateur

Football Carnival played at Perth last week, when they went through theseries undefeated.

They just scraped home by 3 points from West Australia on the first dayand held off a determined last quarter bid by Victoria in the second game to winby 8 points. In their final game they finished too strongly for Tasmania and

won by 9 goals.

Victoria and Tasmania played inthe opening match of the Carnival andthe Vics soon showed their suprem-acy. They led by 28 points at half-time and went right away in thesecond half to win by 88 points .

West Australia, thanks to a 7-goalburst in the second quarter held a 13-point lead over South Australia athalf-time but S .A. added 6 goals inthe third quarter and although W.A .fought back strongly in the last term, they just failed to take the points .

On the second day W .A. and Tas-mania fought out an even game withW.A. winning by 2 points in an ex-citing finish .

Victoria started slowly againstSouth Australia who kicked 7-4 to 1-5in the first term, and with Victoriafailing to take advantage of the windin the second quarter S .A. were in asound position when they led by 31points at half-time .

South went further ahead in thirdquarter and were 44 points in frontat three-quarter-time .

Then Victoria struck back with 3quick goals early in the last quarterbut S .A. steadied and although theVics gradually whittled down theirlead S .A. held on to score by 8 points .

On the final day, Tasmania mana-ged to keep themselves in the gamefor three quarters but S .A. slammedon 8 goals in the last term and wonby 9 goals.

Victoria were not impressive in thefirst half against W.A. and only in-accuracy in front of goal kept West'slead down to 5 points at the interval.

But the second half was all Vic-toria and they went on to win by 38points, W.A. managing to score onlyone point in the second half .
