Just hours before the end of the Continuing Resolution that funded the federal government since the beginning of the 2017 Fiscal Year, PresidentTrump signed the Omnibus budget bill of 2017. Budget UpdateFiscal year 2017 appropriations were finalized earlier this month when both houses of Congress passed legislation that was subsequently signedinto law by the President. Final FY2017 budget guidance for our DOE supported programs is expected within the coming weeks. The budgetanticipated for RHIC Accelerator Operations would support a 21 week run.

Prep. & Risk QuestionnairesA reminder to Principal Investigators--All new proposals must be entered into the Prep. & Risk Questionnaire (PaRQ) website: https://services.bnl.gov/apps/ProposalQ/SitePages/Home.aspx

The PaRQ is required for proposals related to new Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOA’s) from Federal agencies, proposals for StrategicPartnership Projects, and all other new work being planned with any other organization.

It’s important to remember that some work proposals, particularly where we participate as a sub-contractor on SBIR proposals, require specificDOE authorization letters to be submitted with the proposals. Please reach out to me or any analyst from the C-AD business operations staff andwe will coordinate obtaining these documents.

Note from our Accelerator Division: Wolfram Fischer

RHIC has now delivered the originally planned 400 pb-1, at an average beam polarization of P = 54.6%. We plan to continue running withpolarized protons collisions until the end of May. The recent weeks showed larger failure hours, which was often connected to power dips. In June,we plan to run the CeC Proof-of-Principle experiment in parallel with gold-gold collisions for STAR, and at the end have a special run for RHICfin which polarized protons are colliding again, but with a large beam size and small angular spread.

At the beginning of June, we also plan to repair the Linac module 6, which showed sparking and presently does not allow to run the BLIP beam atthe full Linac energy. The BLIP beam currently runs at 117 MeV. Meanwhile, on 18 April 2017, the first beam has been extracted from the LowEnergy RHIC electron Cooling (LEReC) electron gun.

Note from our Experimental Support & Facilities Division: Bill Christie

The ongoing RHIC run is going well. The highest priority for this year's Physics program is a 510 GeV transversely polarized proton-protondata set requested for the STAR program. "Physics running" was declared for the accumulation of this multi-faceted data set on February23rd, and some of the key, central detector related, parts of this data set are just starting to reach their goals. There are a number of forwarddetector related data set goals that got a later start due to the need to commission and calibrate some new systems for this year that still have aways to go, but from the projections it looks like we should reach them before the end of the proton running in May, before we switch toheavy ion running.

Throughout the run this year you've all likely heard that, as we don't know what the budget is for Fiscal Year (FY) 2017, and hence we don'tknow how long the RHIC run will last. As of last Friday there is a Federal Budget for FY 2017. The indications are that when BNL gets itsbudget for this year that it will support a 21 cryo week RHIC run. This past week, we've put together a plan/schedule for the remainder of therun, which has the run ending, and the cryogenics plane shut down, in the morning on Monday July third. You can find the final schedule forthe current RHIC run online at the following link:http://www.c-ad.bnl.gov/esfd/operatingschedules/CAD_operation_FY17.pdf

What you'll see if you look at the schedule s that we'll be running the top energy proton program until the morning of May 30th, at whichpoint we'll stop running the protons, and switch over to low energy gold on gold (Au) running. At this point the LINAC will be able to gooffline for about a week or so to repair an issue that is preventing it from running a program that we are committed to running this year,

known as Radiate. Once the repair is completed this program will be run.

On June 21st, we'll end the low energy AuAu program and transition back to the full energy polarized proton program, this time with radially (i.e. proton spin pointing inthe horizontal, versus the current vertical, plane) polarized beams for what's known as the RHICf experimental program. RHICf is a forward detector that will reside in thelocation of the West (7:00 side) Zero Degree Calorimeter (ZDC) of STAR. The primary purpose of this experiment is to gather data on the forward going particle crosssections for use to calibrate Cosmic Ray shower models, but it has a secondary goal of trying to study the transverse momentum (Pt) dependence of a single spinasymmetry that was observed by the PHENIX experiment in an earlier run.One can find the day to day schedule for the rest of this year's run online at the following Web link:http://www.c-ad.bnl.gov/esfd/Christie_W/May_june_21wks_v2_sched_only.pdfAs the run progresses some of the details of this schedule may change a bit as deemed prudent, but we'll be trying to follow this for the remainder of the run.

Note from Operations: Paul Sampson

Polarized Proton Physics running will continue in RHIC for the remainder of May.

Good progress has been made in setting up for CeC during Operations and dedicated running periods. Setup for running CeC with Au-Au Physics will commence next month. At LEReC, beam has been transported to the dump and work will continue during PhysicsStores. Both CeC and LEReC installation work continues during times of access and scheduled maintenance.

NSRL Run 17A will end late in the month and Run 17B will begin the week of the 29th. Beams from EBIS and LINAC continue toreliably deliver beams for NSRL. Tests of the Galactic Cosmic Ray Simulator system were conducted earlier this month.

LINAC continues to run for BLIP and polarized protons. A BIPB 180MeV run, originally scheduled for this month, was postponed dueto an internal problem with one of the modules. Repairs are presently scheduled for the beginning of June and are expected to take approximately one week.

Maintenance and APEX will continue to occur weekly. Final schedules will be determined at weekly scheduling meetings.

The “RHIC Broadcast” link displays the latest schedules for testing, power disruptions, outages and daily schedules. To view a list of approved work for the Shutdown or to review past results, go to the Job Request System and select the appropriate date. Note from our MEDICAL ISOTOPE RESEARCH & PRODUCTION PROGRAM: Cathy Cutler

So this month we say good bye as a number of members of the MIRP group are leaving. Jason Nalepa who has served as our lead BLIPoperator is moving onto waste management to aid in supervision of their projects. We want to thank Jason as he was always good at gettingthings completed and across the finish line and stepping in as needed to help other members of the group. We are sad to see him go but happyto see him advancing in his desired career path.

Two of our postdocs will be departing at the end of May as well. Ali Younes has accepted a position at Hunter College starting June first. Theplan is to increase our collaborations with Hunter and having Ali there should help. Anthony DeGraffenreid has accepted a position atLantheus. There he will be aiding them in their accelerator production.

We also have several new faces at the MIRP. A new postdoc Vanessa Sanders that recently got her PhD in radiochemistry from UNLV. Shewill be picking up some of Anthony’s projects and working on labeling antibodies. Additionally we welcomed Dohyun Kim to the group. Dohyun has been hired to fill in behind Leonard Mausner who will be retiring in July. Dohyun used to work for the PET group and has a strongbackground in automating processing and detectors. This adds some expertise to the group that will benefit us as we add in new productionlines. Two new MIRP operators have joined the MIRP group as well. Henry Chelminski who has a master’s in chemistry and a strongmechanical background and Jesse Zeigler who worked in the navy and mostly recently as a reactor operator at Indian Point Nuclear Power

Plant. Please help us in welcoming our new group members and saying good bye to those who are moving on.
