Engineering Manager - PED

Date/reference/classification

Production Engineering Department (PED)

The Department was originally formed in April 1987, and is

– Part of the Engineering Directorate

– Located in the Main Shipyard Offices (Building A47)

– Supports all Build Contracts plus miscellaneous tasks.

– Provides a design function that facilitates the shipyard’s

manufacturing, construction and commissioning activities.

The PED Team consists of

– Engineering Designers (mainly Hull Discipline)

– Structural Engineers

– Apprentice Designers & Graduates on placement

PED DESIGNER TYPICAL RESPONSIBILTIES…

– Produce concept designs using 3D modelling techniques.

– Produce detailed manufacturing & general arrangement drawings

– All designs produced via the company’s CAD tools e.g. Cadds5 (Astute) or FORAN (Successor).

– Produce procedures for shipping, transport & handling activities.

– Oversee all major shipping, transportation & handling activities.

PED STRUCTURAL ENGINEER TYPICAL RESPONSIBILTIES …

– Analyse PED designs to ensue conformity to approved Steelwork Standards normally BS EN1993 (Eurocode 3)

– Provide calculations to certify designs using computer aided finite element analysis tools (FEA) eg Abacus, Patran, S-Frame

– Support PED’s designers by giving guidance where needed.

PED’s AREAS OF RESPONSILIBILITY

PED provide a unique design service to support the following

shipyard activities;

– Handling of Structural Steelwork and other units.

– Shipping of Major Equipment & Modules

– Blocking (Supports) for Structural Steelwork & other units

– Transportation of Heavy & Indivisible Build Components

– Jig & Tool design including lifting equipment

– Proof Testing Arrangements & Test Components/Adaptors

– Launch arrangements (for both Shiplift & Berth)

– Dock and Exit Arrangements for Barrow

– Build Strategy & Capacity Planning Studies

Handling Arrangements

– Providing engineering solutions making cost effective use

of Barrow’s site facilities & equipment ie existing cranes &

lifting gear.

– Develop & down select handling method options for a

given item.

– Creating engineering drawings, calculations & procedures

to support the lifting activities including design of any

bespoke equipment needed.

– Providing the statement of requirements for the use of

‘hired in’ mobile cranes to integrate with BAE systems

equipment.

– As ‘Appointed Persons’ provide on site support during the

actual handling operation

Shipping Arrangements

– Supporting the build strategy & planning teams to identify a

‘achievable’ build sequence.

– Supporting the identification & definition of major modules.

– Develop & down select shipping method options for a given

item.

– Creating engineering drawings, calculations & procedures

to support the shipping activities including design of any

bespoke equipment needed (jigs/rigs).

Transport Arrangements

– To create drawings, calculations & procedures for safe

movement of large, heavy Submarine & Ship components

in & around the shipyard.

– This includes specially designed transport cradles

– To fully understand BAE systems submarines transporter

capabilities

– To provide statement of requirements for ‘hired in’ sub-

contracted transport when the load exceeds BAE’s own

transporter capability.

Blocking Arrangements.

– To create layout drawings, calculations & procedures to

safely support large Astute components & Sub units

during build.

Test Arrangements

–-Many items require a form of testing by law eg LOLER,

or MoD Contracts especially where lifting loads or

significant pressures are to be encountered.

–PED design and draw bespoke test arrangements,

procedures & detail drawings for the likes of adaptors,

beams, links etc. which are required to perform the tests.

– PED also have the capability to design & draw test rigs

when needed upon request.

Launch Arrangements

– Design launch arrangements and provide detail drawings

for both a ship lift or a traditional berth launch

– PED works closely with Naval Architects, Structural

Engineering Departments and Nuclear Facilities Design

Authority in developing the arrangements.
