MYCITI

The road aheadLAILA MAJIET

@laila_newsie

New MyCiTi buses forthe N2 Express Serv-ice will see more peo-

ple connected to the citycentre than before.

A total of six buses havebeen added to the routeswhich link Mitchell’sPlain and Khayelitsha tothe Cape Town CBD.

The additional buseswere introduced followingan increase in demand forthe service since it wasrolled out on the CapeFlats on Saturday 5 July.

However, it’s been aslightly bumpyroadwithafew glitches reportedalong the way.

Additional buses were added on thisroute following repeat vandalism toMetrorail infrastructure.

Mayco member for Transport BrettHerron says despite trains now runningnormally, additional buses will contin-ue to operate.

“Since the sabotage of Metrorail’s in-frastructure last month, the demand forthe N2 Express service has more thandoubled and we will continue to deployadditional buses on this route until fur-ther notice,” Herron says.

“This equates to an additional capaci-ty of at least 400 passengers during themorning and afternoon peak hours, overand above the service’s current capacityof about 1 800 passengers.”

Theresa Lombard says the new modeof public transport has been “life chang-ing”.

“It’s great to board a bus and there isspace to move. It’s a quick and easy wayto travel between Mitchell’s Plain andthe CBD,” she beams.

Having travelled by train for 10 years, the MyCiTi bus service could not havebeen rolled out sooner, Lombard adds.

Malcolm Philander has also chosen tochange how he commutes to work eachday. With buses running to schedule for

the most part, arriving late for work isa thing of the past. “I hope the servicecontinues to grow and that infrastruc-ture is maintained,” he says.

Mayor Patricia de Lille says the MyCi-Ti bus service is the most successfullarge-scale empowerment project in thecity. “MyCiTi is the biggest black eco-nomic empowerment project the Cityhas undertaken. What is also commend-able about this process is the positive re-lationship that we have formed with ourpartners Codeta and the Route Six TaxiAssociation,” De Lille says. “The N2 ex-press service is a noteworthy example ofthe vision and will of taxi owners whohavecomeonboardandworkedwith theCity to achieve a smooth and successfulindustry transition.”

This success follows years of ongoingnegotiations with the taxi industry.

Henry “Hawk” Williams of the RouteSix Taxi Association says council mustcontinue to work with the industry in abid to continue improving services pro-vided. The Route Six Taxi Association isthe only one responsible for the routewhich travels to the CBD.

Route Six has 156 permits from Mitch-ell’s Plain to the CBD, which is ownedby 72 taxi owners.

Spring blossoms vs mowed parksDeciding whether to have neat, mowed parksand verges or a display of newly blossomedspring flowers is annually a difficult deci-sion to make.

Either way it is a choice that delights someresidents while leaving others unhappy, saysthe City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committeemember for Community Services and SpecialProjects Belinda Walker.

Cape Town is experiencing a winter of highrainfall, interspersed with periods of warmweather.

This weather promotes the germinationand rapid growth of many species of wildflowers and grasses across Cape Town.

Walker says grasses and weeds in particu-lar, thrive under these conditions and parksand sidewalks can start to look untidy almostovernight.

The annual spring flowers have also start-ed to bloom in public open spaces.

In the past, City Parks curtailed the mow-ingof certainareasduring the floweringperi-od to allow flowers to bloom and shed theirseeds.

But this proved problematic in that therewas also a proliferation of weeds and grasses.

“This year, City Parks will keep mowed ar-eas tidy as a priority. Some wild flower areasmay be identified and mowed at a later datebut they will be clearly signposted,” she says.

Walker adds that there are still many openareas throughout the city, including identi-fied biodiversity areas or natural sensitiveareas, where mowing does not take place andwhere spring flowers can be seen.

City Parks will monitor the areas that arestarting to look untidy.

Staff and contractors will work additionalhours to limit or reduce any mowing back-logs, but the department appeals to residentsto be patient.

Any concerns about uncut grass in parksand on sidewalks or verges can be directedto City Parks on (021) 400 9538.

Mayor mum on Siqalo surveyLAILA MAJIET

@laila_newsie

A survey being conducted at Siqalo in-formal settlement is shrouded in se-crecy.

Officials from the mayor’s office have re-fused to reveal why the survey is being un-dertaken.

Meanwhile, ratepayers are insisting theyhave a right to know about the survey.

The Cape High Court was expected tohave made a decision on Monday 12 Mayas to whether or not to evict squatters in-vading private property on Vanguard Drivenear Mitchell’s Plain.

But council asked for more time to assessthe situation. City officials are now in theprocess of completing a court-ordered sur-vey to establish the number of squatters oc-cupying the land. Numerous attempts to ob-tain detailed comment from the mayor’s of-fice proved unsuccessful.

Mayoral spokesperson Zara Nicholsonsays: “The matter is sub judice. Howeverthe parties are currently in the process ofconducting a survey of the residents inSiqalo.”

Ward councillor Natalie Bent has playedopen cards with her constituency, reveal-ing that a total of 150 Siqalo residents havebeen identified to carry out the survey.“The case was postponed to Monday 8 Sep-tember for residents’ details to be capturedon a database to check whether any of themhave houses elsewhere,” she explained.“This is to ensure those who have housesare not offered alternative accommodationshould the eviction order be granted.”

The validity of the survey has now comeinto question, due to what Bent believes isa conflict of interest. “I am deeply con-cerned the surveymightnot bea true reflec-tion of what is happening at Siqalo. I am

amazed at how people who have illegally in-vaded land can dictate what services mustbe made accessible and who gets the jobs,”Bent says. “Council is being expected tochange its policies to accommodate Siqaloresidents, by employing people who are noton the subcouncil’s jobseekers database.”

Mitchell’s Plain resident Maxine Isaacsagrees. “How honest will the survey be ifthose doing it are from the area?”

But Bent guarantees the process will bemonitored. “The department overseeingthe survey has assured me they will keepa watchful eye on the process to ensure thesurvey is an accurate reflection.”

Subcouncil manager Raphael Martinsays squatters are holding the City ransomby threatening to dump refuse on VanguardDrive if they are not given employment op-portunities.

Proportional Representative councillorKenneth Lategan says council cannot aidand abet wrongdoers by meeting their de-mands. “We will be setting precedentswhich will come back to bite us,” he says.

Meanwhile, the mayor has recently comeunder fire for failing to account to the peo-ple of Mitchell’s Plain, despite making apublic commitment to do so, People’s Postreported (“Council ‘fails to deliver’”, 28 Au-gust).

It’s been nearly six months since councilinterventions at Siqalo informal settlementwere proposed, yet promises have not beenkept. Outraged ratepayers say the council’scommitment to addressing traffic conges-tion and crime on Vanguard Drive near thesettlement was nothing but a cheap politi-cal ploy to garner votes ahead of the Mayelections.

The mayor and her team visited the areain March to assure ratepayers of their com-mitment in dealing with traffic congestionand crime surrounding the shackland.

NO MAN’S LAND: The informal settlement near Mitchell’s Plain has mushroomed as is evident fromthis photo taken in 2012. Squatters illegally occupying private property may be there to stay. The matterhas been before the courts for nearly two years, as ratepayers demand land invaders be relocated.

CRIME

Zooming in onTown CentreLAILA MAJIET

@laila_newsie

Just hours beforebrazen crimi-nals hit a local

jewellery store, theCCTV cameras inthe nearby vicinitywere vandalised.

City of CapeTown safety and se-curity director Ri-chard Bosman saysthe camera locatednear the jewellerystore was vandal-ised on Sunday 17August. Officials believe the two incidentsaren’t related.

“The camera was repaired the next day.The City has footage of the second incident, which was handed over to the police andnow forms part of the police investigation,”he says.

CCTV networks at the trading precincthave come under scrutiny lately, as allega-tions have surfaced that the cameras are ac-tually out of order. But City officials insistall the cameras at the shopping hub are infact operational and are monitored daily.

In a bid to improve safety and security inTown Centre, it was proposed that camerasare monitored on site.

However, Bosman says this is not deemedviable or necessary at this stage. “Camerasare currently monitored remotely at theCity’s transport management centre in linewith the council’s policy. The staff at the

centre are in con-stant contact, com-municating withstaff on the ground, who react to any re-ports,” he says.

The centralisedmonitoring pointhas proven efficientand officers who arealready in the areacan immediately bedeployed to respondto any incidents.

In just four days, arobbery, attemptedrobbery and hostagedrama unfolded at

the centre and traders are demanding au-thorities step in to address the surge incrime. Chaos erupted at the precinct onMonday 18 August and again on Thursday21 August when armed men stormed a jew-ellery store and held staff hostage during anattempted robbery.

A local security guard was fatally shot onMonday 18 August while in pursuit of thearmed robbers who are yet to be apprehend-ed.

Abie Isaacs, chairperson of the Mitchell’sCommunity Policing Forum, says business-es have the responsibility to ensure thesafety of their customers who frequent thetrading hub. “Since the attempted armedrobbery several businesses have pledgedtheir support to improving safety and secu-rity at the shopping precinct. This is a stepin the right direction and we can only moveforward from here,” says Isaacs.

KIDNEY WEEK

A fighting chanceTARRENLEE HABELGAARN

@LeeLaVidaLoca

About 10% of all peoplein the world havesome form of kidney

disease.This frightening statis-

tic was released by Nation-al Renal Care and HealthyStart practitioner RasedaSamaai, who says this is anillness that strikes whenyou least expect it.

Do you have a high bloodpressure, a burning sensa-tion when you urinate, orpuffy eyes, hands and feet?Do you suffer from fatigue, shortness of breath, loss ofappetite, nausea and vom-iting, constant thirst or abad taste in the mouth?

During National KidneyWeek, which runs fromTuesday 2 September toSaturday 6 September, residents are en-couraged to find out whether kidney dis-ease affects you and pledge to become akidney donor.

Renal specialist Dr Keith Houghtonsays salt and high blood pressure are twosilent killers.

“A high salt intake and hypertensionare two of the most common causes ofkidney disease. By the time many peoplepresent with symptoms and signs of kid-ney disease (especially hypertensionand diabetes), it may be too late to haveprevented serious kidney and/or cardio-vascular dysfunction,” he explains.

“The kidneys are the filters of thebody and are used to produce urine andexcreteunwantedwaste in thebody.Kid-neys produce 150F of urine a day, butkeep back 149F of useful substances, likeprotein, and excrete 2Fof waste.”

Houghton says when kidneys no long-er function properly the body is slowlypoisoned and cannot get rid of or pro-duce essential hormones and nutrients.

“When your kidneys don’t work prop-erly the body cannot get rid of the un-wanted waste, it can’t provide the nutri-ents to take care of our bones and joints,

allowing for a solid andhealthy skeleton and can’tcontrol the amount of acidi-ty and alkalinity (pH) in thebody.”

“It also won’t be able toproduce chemicals whichcontrol our blood pressure, and produce other chemi-cals which produce our redblood cells and this will leadto insufficient oxygen sup-ply to the body. The kidneysare also responsible for de-stroying chemicals and hor-mones which the bodydoesn’t need any more likeinsulin.”

A healthy lifestyle is theeasiest way to prevent kid-ney disease. “Not smoking, limiting alcohol intake, drinking lots of water andexercise all play a big rolein the prevention of kidneyfailure.”

He says maintaining a healthy diet isalso important.

Sammy Sampson has been living witha donor kidney for 27 years and says lifedoesn’t stop after renal failure.

“If you detect the problem earlyenough you can go on dialysis and re-ceive a transplant if need be,” he says.

Sampson spent six months on dialysisbefore his transplant. “My mother andfour siblings all tested to see if they coulddonate me a kidney but none were amatch. I received my kidney from ayoung man who died in a car accident.I need to take 20 tablets a day but life goeson. All we need are people who are will-ing to donate their kidneys.”

Samaai says part of her job as nationalcoordinator for renal care is to createawareness of kidney disease.

To this end, she has arranged a PatientForum with the theme The gift of life.

The event will consist of presentationsby, among others, a kidney specialistand patients undergoing treatments. Ittakes place on Saturday 13 Septemberfrom 14:00 to 17:00 at the Samaj Centrein Gatesville.V Contact Samaai on 079 490 4773.

HEALTH FIRST: SammySampson takes 20 tabletsa day. He received a donorkidney 27 years ago.

Harsh realities of teen parentingTARRENLEE HABELGAARN

A couple is hoping to prevent teenage preg-nancies in a new eye-opening way.

Giving children a dose of reality is one wayWayne and Bernadette Duddy hope to pre-vent teenagers from becoming parents soon-er than expected.

The couple imported 13 computer-operatedbabies which simulate the actions of a realbaby.

Threeof thebabieshavebeenespeciallyde-signed to show the physical drawbacks of ba-bies suffering from Foetal Alcohol Syndrome(FAS), drug use and what is known as a shak-en baby. The other 10 babies indicate perfecthealth.

She explains that each baby is pro-grammed and given a certificate before beinghanded over to the new ‘parent’.

“The teenager then gets to take the babyhome for a week and is expected to care forthe baby the way a full-time parent would. The baby needs to eat, be cleaned and han-dled correctly. All information is logged ontothe computer and at the end of the week a re-port card is provided.”

She has been saving up for five years to buythese babies with the help of her husband be-

cause “it has always been my dream to helpteens”.

“Years ago I realised there is a big need inour community to educate the youth aboutthe reality ofhavingababywhile youare stilla teenager,” she says.

“I realised pamphlets and talks at schoolare not reaching children in a productive oreffective manner.”

Since receiving the babies three monthsago, Bernadette has already received posi-tive feedback from teens who have tried theexperiment.

“Once the week is completed most of thechildrenare exhaustedand realisewhathardwork it is to take care of a child. So manyhave said they will now think twice beforehaving unprotected sex and some of the olderchildren have stopped drinking and smokingas a result of the FAS and drug baby experi-ments,” she says.

“Sometimes you have to be cruel to be kindand that is what this programme is doing.”

Wayne says they are excited to take the ex-periment to schools and community organi-sations. “Anyone who wants to make use ofour services can contact us and set up a date.We would like to go to as many primary andhigh school, youth groups and organisationswhich have identified a need to educate chil-

dren on teenagepregnancies andsubstance abuseduring pregnan-cy. We mainly fo-cus on childrenbut are more thanwilling to assistwith older genera-tions as well.”

Suzette Little,Mayoral Commit-tee member forEarly ChildhoodDevelopment, says council hasrecently approvedusing the pro-gramme. “We willfully be support-ing this initiativeand making use ofthe experiment inour facilities,”says Little.

ALERT

Geyser scamA warning is being issued for homeownersto beware of companies offering free energyassessments, apparently on behalf of Es-kom.

This warning comes on the back of re-ports that a supplier of solar water heatershas been posing as an Eskom agent con-ducting energy assessments for homeown-ers. The so-called agent’s method is to tar-get pensioners via telephone.

People who agree to a consultation andallow the sales representatives into theirhomes have been treated aggressively andgiven a bogus evaluation of their house-hold’s energy usage.

The home’s geyser consumption is usual-ly highlighted as the critical cause of high-energy consumption and people are subse-quently coerced into buying a solar waterheater from the company.

Eskom senior general manager for inte-grated demand management Andrew Etz-inger confirms that Eskom has not commis-sioned any suppliers to conduct free energyassessments.

He advises homeowners against lettinganyone into their homes.

“When Eskom does implement residen-tial energy savings interventions, we en-sure that residents are notified beforehandand run awareness campaigns in the localmedia,” he says.

Homeowners are advised against buyingenergy-saving technologies from suppliersclaiming they have been tested and en-dorsed by Eskom.

“You are under no obligation to allow an-yone into your home to conduct energy as-sessments or sell energy-saving products. Ifyou are approached by salespeople claim-ing a technology or device has been en-dorsed by Eskom, be sceptical,” Etzingersays.

He further advises that homeowners al-ways purchase energy-saving technologiesfrom a reputable supplier and look for theSABS mark.V Consumers can call Eskom’s Solar Helpdesk on(011) 800 4744 or visit www.eskom.co.za for a list ofaccredited solar water heating system suppliers.

Suspects nabbed for cigarette heistAn alert truck driver and the quick actionof local police led to suspects being collaredfor a cigarette heist in Mitchell’s Plain.

Two men have been arrested in connec-tion with a carjacking, kidnapping and rob-bery after they hit a cigarette delivery vehi-cle last Tuesday morning.

Police spokesperson Constable ZandileMarashula says the driver of the deliveryvan was offloading cigarettes at the taxirank when he was forced into the back ofthe vehicle.

“One of the suspects drove off with the

driver and stopped at a nearby street to of-fload. The suspect fled the scene and the cig-arette delivery vehicle was abandoned inNiagara Street, Portlands.”

The suspects were arrested shortly after.“The Tactical Response Team followed up

on the information which led them to ahouse in Philippi where the suspects werearrested on charges of carjacking, kidnap-ping and robbery,” she adds.

The suspects, who are between the agesof 20 and30, appeared in theMitchell’s PlainMagistrate’s Court on Thursday.

LAND RESTITUTION

D6 Trustmay payNICOLE MCCAIN

@nickymccain

T he District Six RedevelopmentTrust, which represents the benefici-aries of two land restitution housing

projects, may be ordered to pay money outto claimants.

These claimants are believed to havepaid the organisation R225 000 for theirstake in the third phase of the develop-ment.

However, the organisation has since dis-tanced itself from the construction.

Gugile Nkwinti, the minister of rural de-velopment and land reform, recently metwith over 700 District Six claimants whorequested that he consults the Minister ofJustice and Constitutional DevelopmentMichael Masutha that the District Six De-velopment Trust pays the money to its ben-eficiaries.

This is according to Rural Developmentand Land Reform regional spokespersonVuyani Nkasayi.

“Claimants eligible for repayment in-clude those who have paid a contributionof R225 000 to the District Six BeneficiaryTrust,” Nkasayi says.

Trust chairperson Anwah Nagia saysthe money was not taken under false pre-tences. “The funds were a contribution to-wards bigger properties, as the govern-ment only pays for 70m², leaving another40m² which the claimants had to pay for.”

The third housing development hasmuch smaller properties and the addition-al funds are no longer needed, Nagia says.

“The money is in trust and all we needis a letter from the minister of Rural Devel-opment and Land Reform. We will thenhand the money over to him, and he canallocate it,” he says.

The Trust announced in June that itwould withdraw from the third phase ofhousing developments (“Land squabble in-tensifies”, People’s Post, 26 June).

The third phase will see almost 300homes built. The houses – which arearound60m² –undermine the trust’s visionfor the area which would allow residentsto obtain business rights to their proper-ties, according to Nagia. However, in orderfor larger homes to be built, claimantswould have to contribute around R250 000.

Citywide residents’ associations and civic-minded organ-isations are raising funds and awareness to introduceCCTV cameras.

This is being done in an attempt to curb the free reignof criminal activity.

From Mitchell’s Plain to the Atlantic coastline, resi-dents and businesses are bearing the brunt of flagrant dis-regard for personal safety. Private property and personalspace is invaded without concern for the long arm of thelaw or even, if criminals are eventually apprehended, stints courtesy of correctional services.

In short, the crooks in Cape Town simply don’t care foryour safety. In their haste to fill out the wish lists in thecriminal world, your possessions – however hard comeby – are eyed, scoped out and stolen.

Does it even make sense to show off your jewellery orfancy cellphone? It would be foolish to think so and to actin like manner.

After multiple warnings from police and communitysafety organisations, you have only yourself to blamewhen you’ve brandished your top-end cellphone, iPad,laptop or watch only to see these disappearing into thedistance in the hand of a common criminal. Bear in mindit is the job of a crook to steal, and the onus is on anyonenot wanting to be a victim to protect and hide their goods.

Eventually the whole of Cape Town – from the town-ships to areas populated by tourists – will be covered an-gle to angle by CCTV cameras.

It is hoped the crooks will get the message: crime doesnot – and shouldnot – pay.Youwill get caught, eventually.

Meanwhile, Cape Town will join major cities of theworld like London and New York as the most photo-graphed citizens.

Minor infringements like traffic violations will also beunder scrutiny.

It will go a long way to assisting law enforcement andeven the insurance industry in determining guilt or inno-cence.

Time will tell if this will help curb crime.

Building a relationshipMy husband and I purchased a wendy housefrom Greystone with the assurance they usethe best quality material.

They advised us at the time the wendyhouse will be insured for a year. Almost amonth after the insurance expired, we no-ticed the wendy house’s roof was leaking. When I contacted them at the time, I was ad-vised they cannot assist as the insurance ex-pired. This I accepted and tried to fix theroof. However, the leaking persisted due torusted roof sheets.

I phoned Greystone and as the womangave me the same “expired insurance”speech, someone – her boss, I think – advisedher that if the roof sheets are rusting, theyneed to investigate. They sent someone tohave a look and we were then advised it isdefinitely rust and theywill revertwith feed-back. On Wednesday 13 August I phonedGreystone again to find out if they have anyfeedback and was advised they are waitingon the supplier of the roof sheets to givethem feedback so they can advise us. Iphoned again on Tuesday 19 August and wasadvised the supplier is not taking responsi-bility for bad roof sheets. However they can’tadvise anything until the boss advises andthey will get back to me. I phoned again andwas told the boss hasn’t been in the officesince Wednesday, but that he would be in[later] and they will phone me.

Greystone is more expensive than mostother places that offer their service. Howev-er, because of the assurance of quality wewere persuaded to use them. They had noproblem arranging finance for us so nowthey are paid yet we are still paying for aleaking wendy house. It’s very distressingthat Greystone can be so flippant about cus-

tomer care when they are supposed to be thebest in the industry.LYNN FREEMANEmailCarmen Thomas, Greystone operationsmanager, responds: On 6 August Ms Free-man called in to report the problem she washaving with the roof sheets on her wendyhouse which we erected more than a yearago.

Shewas informed that thewarrantyon theroof had already expired but we would senda site inspector around to check the condi-tion of the roof. This was duly done and theroof sheets on the wendy house are verydamaged and rusted as per our inspection.

We advised her we would take this matterup with our suppliers and revert to her. Dur-ing this time Ms Freeman dealt with me butunfortunately I do not have the authorisa-tion to order and replace supplies. My imme-diate superior was in and out of the officehence the delay in concluding this com-plaint and Ms Freeman’s frustration.

Greystone has decided it would be point-less taking this matter any further with oursupplier but they have been informed of thecondition of the roof sheets.

We have never experienced a complaint ofthis nature before. Normally we have com-plaints of leakages but never rust and theleakages we attend to when they are report-ed to us.

We will replace and fit Ms Freeman’s roofsheets at a time convenient for her butplease take into account the impending in-clement weather we are and will be experi-encing.

Our building department will confirm adate and time with Ms Freeman.

Pupils left out in the coldWhen I take my son to school in the morn-ings I have to witness an outdated and cruelpractice. Why are primary school pupilsforced to stand outside in the pouring rainat pedestrian crossings?

It is understandable that schools want toteach children a sense of responsibility byputting them on traffic duty in the morn-ings, but is it really necessary for them to

do this during winter?Surely teachers can use some common

sense and see that it is unethical and border-ing on child abuse. If the children gets sickstanding in the rain, the school will not payfor their medical bills.

Teachers get paid to look after the chil-dren, but they sit in a warm staff room, drinking coffee and tea, while the children

freeze outside. What is even more alarming is that traffic

officers occasionally make an appearance tooversee this barbaric custom. A governmentofficial should really know better.

It is an important and life-saving job tousher pupils across a pedestrian crossing, but there is no reason why teachers can’t doit themselves when it is raining.

It is, after all, their job to care for the chil-dren. Is it not?EDWIN KANNEMEYER

An army forMalema? The ruling party’s decision to bring in thearmy to protect parliament from the loud-mouth Malema, clad in red overalls and ametal hat, can only be described as histrion-ic.

The services of the army are desperatelyneeded in our townships, to protect the com-munity from the stray bullets of warringgangs. In the townships the community hasto face the live ammunition of gangs at war;in parliament, members are only attackedverbally, so there is no need at all for themto turn to the army for protection.

The two chosen spokespersons for the rul-ing party, Jesse Duarte and Gwede Man-tashe, are doing their party a great disserv-ice with their flippant comments. Everytime they open their mouths, they put theirfoot into it.

At no time did the public protector implyshe is above parliament; she was merely do-ing what was expected of her and that is toprotect the public from any form of abuse, regardless of their standing. It is an absoluteinsult for these spokespeople from the rul-ing party to suggest the public protector isworking in cahootswitha rabble-rouser likeMalema. Thuli Madonesela is intelligentenough to stand her ground without anyhelp from people like Malema. It is the otherway around: Malema has been using herfindings to embarrass the ruling party.

The reactions of the ruling party overEFF’s behaviour in parliament are a clearsign that the party has become totally belea-guered by a lack of wise and prudent counselto take them out of the embarrassing im-passe in which they find themselves.DR EV RAPITI

Dirty Whites move to the topTASMIN CUPIDO

@TazzCup

Come the 2015 club rugby season, theSouthern Suburbs will boast with sixteams in the top tier of Western Prov-

ince club rugby.Following the final round of matches in

the top three leagues last weekend, the fiveteams with current Super League A statuscemented their spots for next year.

And with Villager RFC winning the SuperLeague B title after their 25-23 victory overSir Lowrians RFC at Brookside on Satur-day, the Claremont side will return to SuperLeague A next season.

Maties were crowned SLA champions forthe third consecutive year, after HamiltonRFC could not hold of the Maroon Ma-chine’s charge in their 27-25 loss at DanieCraven Stadium on Saturday.

The Stellenbosch side were deserved win-ners, as they were the only undefeated sidein the league.

But Hammies’ loss comes at a cost forUCT, as they had to settle for second place.

The Green Point side finished the seasonin third place.

The last round of matches also had a bit-tersweet ending for False Bay RFC – theythrashed NNK 58-3 at Philip HerbsteinField, but had to be content with the fifthplace finish and no spot in the CommunityCup.

Going into the weekend the Constantiaclub still had hopes of making the nationalrugby championships, but Durbanville-Bel-lville’s 38-22 victory over Bellville RFCmeant they, not The Bay, would feature innext year’s Community Cup. Both PrimroseRFC and SK Walmers finished their seasonson a low, as Roses were defeated 34-33 byUWC and Victorians beat Walmers 46-31.

V In SLB, Mitchell’s Plain club CollegiansRFC ensured they would remain in the sec-ond highest league in the Cape as they beatGoodwood 42-22 in Lentegeur.

Despite their 39-32 loss away to Bracken-fell RFC, Surrey Estate Rangers will also re-tain their SLB status next season.

V In Super League C, Lansdowne’s VioletsRFC were defeated 20-10 by a spirited anddetermined Franschhoek United, who werethe league’s eventual winners. SilvertreeRFC were hammered 17-43 by Strand at Mal-ta Park in Sybrandt Park.

The outcome of the MIT Rangers andNortherns RFC match at Avonwood Park inElsies River is not known. It is believed thematch had been called off as a result of ill-discipline on the pitch, but this could notbe confirmed at the time of going to print.

While the matches in the top threeleagues have come to an end, the teams inthe Champions, City and Southern leagueswill remain in action this weekend.

WP Rugby also needs to finalise the teamsand fixtures for the President’s Cup, whichbe played at City Park later this month.

V On Saturday Masiphumelele will travelto Philippi to take on Blue Stars United inthe Champions League, while CaledonianRoses host Young Stars at Noll Avenue.

V In the City League, Perseverance takeon Busy Bees in Langa, Hamediehs host Po-lice, Progress tackle Technicon Gardensand Temperance-Cities do battle withWatsonia.

V Retreat hosts Bishop Lavis at AllenbyDrive Sports Complex in the SouthernLeague, while Rocklands plays Thistles andTitans take on Peninsula.V View all the results, logs and fixtures at www.wpclubrugby.co.za.
