Wildwood residents are making a des-perate plea for action against a va-cant property they claim is ground

zero for criminal activities including drugdealing.Many believe they have exhausted all ave-

nues in a bid to end the sinister deedsunfold-ing on the property.Ward councillor Natalie Bent now strong-

ly advises that residents lodge formal com-plaints so the private property owner can beheld liable.The issue of the problem property on the

corners of Highlands and Vanguard driveswas fleshed out at a recent public meeting.Residents claim a hive of illicit activities

transpire at the Wildwood plot at all hours.With the perfect view of the entire area,

criminals are using it to their advantage,residents insist.Plans to build a gated community on the

plot was halted due to the Siqalo informalsettlement mushrooming out of control,Bent says.“Council approved plans for 22 units to be

built, but the landowner is not going aheadwith the development pending the outcomeof the Siqalo court case.”Property owner, who does not want to be

named, declined the opportunity to com-ment. He has been informed of the criminalactivities happening at the house on the hill,Bent says.“I told him residents are not happy with

what is happeningat theproperty.He claimsit is only his workers who are living thereto secure the place. The place is really goingdown the drain. People are often seen jump-ing over the fence from Vanguard Drive.”A Wildwood resident says unfamiliar fac-

es are seen frequenting the property. “It is

also used as a thoroughfare by Siqalo resi-dents,” he says.Another Wildwood resident of 20 years

says: “The house on the hill is a nightmare.It seems drugs are being sold there.”Resident Eddie Veldsman says officials

have failed to address the problem.“We need regular raids at the property to

deter criminals from plying their illicittrades in this neighbourhood,” he says.Sector commander Warrant Officer An-

thony Appels says to be effective in curbingcrime, residents must come on board.“We need to extend our street committees.

The community must assist us in fightingcrime by reporting criminals. Based on the

turnout at public meetings, it seems every-thing is fine in the area. It is only when peo-ple are directly affected by crime that theyattend. You should always attend to be a partof the solution.”The building has over the years fallen into

disrepair, attracting the wrong elements,residents say.

A grieving family from Strandfonteinclaims a private cemetery buried theirrelative in shame.

The family, who does not want to be iden-tified for fear of victimisation, says GloriaMemorial Park Cemetery made a mockeryof what was to be a dignified funeral.Butmanagement at the cemetery strongly

denies this.The cemetery has been operational for 30

years and under new management for 15.Complaints of an unusually shallow

grave, a waterlogged burial plot and failureto assist the grieving family have beenlodged against the facility owners.“All we wanted was to give him a digni-

fied and beautiful send-off. Hewas in his 70sand lived in Johannesburg. His body wastransported to Cape Town so that he couldbe buriedwith hiswife, but this did not hap-pen,” the deceased’s sister says.“The service we received fromGloriaMe-

morial was pathetic. I cannot believe mybrother was buried in such a disgracefulmanner.” In preparation for the inevitable,the deceased bought a plot at the Gloria Me-morial Park Cemetery in Ottery 19 yearsago.“You do this because you do not want

your family to be burdened with the costsof arranging a funeral, but it was all invain,” his sister says. “Wewere told his plotwas waterlogged, but cemetery officials re-fused to provide any proof of these claims.”

But managerBeverley Naidoodenies these alle-gations. “Due tothe amount of rainthe Western Capehas experiencedduring this win-ter, some of ourburial sectionsare waterlogged,”she says. “Wegavethe family the op-tion of proceedingwith burying thedeceased in thewaterlogged buri-al plot or we couldprepare a publicgrave due to theshort timeframegiven by the fami-ly.”This was agreed

upon, she says.“On Monday 11August, the deceased’s daughter contactedme stating her family is unhappy and want-ed to know if we could move the remains tothe family burial site.We said she can applyfor an exhumation after 18 months.”Allegations of mismanagement cloud the

operations of the private cemetery. “Funer-al parlours and private cemeteries are cash-ing in on grieving families. It is just a mon-ey-making business,” the sister claims.The family is now warning others to

check the condition of burial plots alreadypurchased. “Do not wait until a loved onepasses. I encourage people to enquire abouttheir plots,” the deceased’s niece stresses.Naidoo says buying a plot does not make

you the rightful owner of the land. “Youdon’t actually own the land, but rather havethe right to burial at the grave site pur-chased.” The family is also distressed at thestate of the cemetery. “The place is horren-dous due to poor maintenance,” they say.

Plain Hospital left a family fuming.So says the family of an ailing pensioner

who waited seven hours to be examined.Hazel Pentolfe (72) was first admitted to

the health facility in July.Daughter-in-law Hayley Wright was at

her side and claims doctors fail to assist theailed and injured.“Mymotherarrivedat thehospital byam-

bulance and was immediately put on oxy-gen. However, it was only seven hours laterthat a doctor arrived to examine her,”Wright says. “It was then discovered shehad blood clots in her lungs and leg. Whilewaiting for someone to assist us, doctorswere seen just sitting around, playing ontheir cellphones.”Provincial health department officials

say many of the patient’s experiences goagainst standard hospital practices.Pentolfe remained in the trauma unit for

a week due to a shortage of beds.It is believed the 60-bed medical unit is

overflowing. Allegations of critical staffshortages have also surfaced.After a week at the new medical facility,

the senior citizen was transferred to Carna-tion Ward at Lentegeur Hospital just astone’s throw away.“The service there was even worse,” says

an angryWright. “The smell alone was hor-rendous. Therewere three other patients inthe same room as my mom. They woulddirty themselves and sometimes only bechanged five hours later.”Provincial health spokesperson Sithem-

biso Magubane says patients’ diapersshould be changed every two to three hoursdepending on the condition of the patient.Staff at Carnation Ward “ignored” Pen-

tolfe’s special dietary requirements,Wrightsays. “She has diabetes, but was fed every-thing the doctors said she could not eat.”But Magubane says this is not operation-

al norms.If a patient has diabetes “they are fed a

special diabetic diet”, he maintains.The family was also expected to change

the patient’s bedding and bath her. “We didit because no one else would,” Wright adds.Again, Magubane says this is not com-

mon practice.“Bedding is changed routinely in the

morningwhen the patients arewashed, andany time when the bedding is soiled.”The patient was discharged, but returned

to the hospital with blood in her stool.“It seems you visit the hospital to receive

medical attention only to leave in a worsecondition than you arrived. With only onedoctor in triage, we waited six hours beforebeing assisted. It is deeply disturbing to re-ceive such treatment at a new ‘world-class’facility,” Wright seethes. “This could have

been any of the staff’s mothers and I am cer-tain they would not want their mother to betreated the way my mother was. I hope noone ever has to endure such poor treat-ment.”It is at this stageunclearwhether discipli-

Two Mitchell’s Plain detectives havebeen arrested for fraud after R40 000 al-legedly exchanged hands.The pair was arrested by the Hawks

in a parking lot late on Monday after-noon.The arrest by detectives from the

Western Cape Directorate of PriorityCrime Investigations unit follows an in-quiry into allegations of police corrup-tion.“At about 17:30, shortly after an illegal

deal took place in a parking area inMor-genster Road, they pounced on the de-tectives.“The two men were arrested and po-

lice recovered R40 000 which the sus-pects allegedly received for selling a po-lice case docket,” a police statementreads.The two detectives, aged 30 and 42, ap-

pear in court yesterday.Mitchell’s Plain Police Station com-

mander Colonel Cass Goolam says thepair are part of a specialised clusterteam which investigates priority gangcases.“The specialised team investigates

cases of organised crime,” he confirms.He assures the community of station

management’s commitment to stompout corruption.“We remain steadfast in rooting out

rotten apples within the police force. Itis only with the help of the communitythat we will be able to do this.”

Cold-blooded killers, ruthless robbersand brazen drug dealers – these are thecriminals preying on the innocent at

Town Centre.The trading precinct was a hive of activi-

ty on Monday 18 August after a securityguard at a local fisheries was gunned downfollowing an “act of bravery”.

The 38-year-old man, fondly known asMarkie, gave chase after a robbery at a jew-ellery store at the trading hub.

The former neighbourhood watch mem-ber was shot in the head as he closed in onthe suspects, witnesses say.

Vendors and commuters who use TownCentre are now demanding action for a saf-er shopping hub.

Trader Jasmine Harris claims poor po-lice visibility and council’s lack of concernis to blame.

“Three police officers and one patrol vanfor the entire Mitchell’s Plain CBD is notenough. It seems criminals are protectedwhile innocent lives are lost,” says Harris.

Visits to Town Centre by politiciansreeks of desperation, she believes. “It is alljust empty promises and lies. They do awalk-about, promise to come back, but nev-er do. We are then forced to continue tostruggle under dire conditionswhile tryingto earn a decent living.”

Mitchell’s Plain police spokesperson Ser-geant Jerome Voegt says the shooting hap-pened at 09:30 in Polka Square.

“It is alleged the deceased was shot whilepursuing two armed robbers. It is believedthe two suspects robbed a jewellery storeof an undisclosed amount of cash and jewel-lery. They fled the scene in a Toyota Corol-

la,” he says.A business robbery and murder case has

been opened for investigation.Rozario Brown, director of the Anti-mur-

der Campaign of South Africa, says TownCentre is a “ticking time bomb waiting toexplode”. “Formany years the community,hawkers and employees at Town Centrehave been calling for improved securitymeasures,” he says. “Why should doing anhonest day’s work become a matter of lifeand death?”

Having always encouraged people to nottake the law into their own hands, Brownnow says: “I don’t know if this is what Ishould be encouraging our people to contin-ue doing” as traders’ concerns fall on deafears. “How do you not start arming and de-fending yourself, your staff and you proper-ty, against these calculated and cold-blood-ed killers and robbers roaming our streets?Why should we, law-abiding citizens, sitback and become sitting ducks waiting tobe attacked and killed by these drug addictsand armed robbers?”

The trading precinct was on lockdown onMonday shortly after the shooting, as trad-ers closed shop and marched to Mitchell’sPlain Police Station while chanting “Freeour Town Centre”.

Disgruntled trader Kulsum Baker saysgovernment has failed the people. “Markiedied a hero. It could have been any one ofus working here,” she says.

Harris adds: “Nobody is here to protectus. Where was the police and Law Enforce-ment when the jewellery store was robbed?Markie was there.”

A central park for Strandfontein is un-der consideration.

Smaller parks may be scrappedwith all funds ploughed into the upgradingand maintenance of one world-class out-door facility in the seaside suburb.

Strandfontein residents are now beingurged to add their voices as the proposalis open to public scrutiny.

Ward councillor Elton Jansen tabled theproposal at recent public meetings.

“At the public meetings held on 9 Apriland 6 August, I made a proposal to the com-munity that we develop a central park inStrandfontein with outdoor gym equip-ment for our health fanatics as well as de-cent play equipment for the children,” hesays.

With a limited ward allocation, he be-lieves, this could address the needs of allresidents.

“For the 2014/2015 financial year, wehave limited funding allocated for all theparks in the ward. Distributing limitedfunds among all the parks will make no sig-nificant impact,” says Jansen.

“The idea is to develop this big park forthe whole of Strandfontein to enjoy andthen address the individual parks one byone.”

The first round of public participationcloses on Sunday 31 August.

“I request residents’ comments on thisproposal and also should you be in favourto forward your suggestion for the locationof the park,” he adds.

The proposal has received mixed re-views with some elated at the idea and oth-

ers rubbishing it.A handful of residents at a recent public

meeting called for the outdoor gym equip-ment to be placed at the peace garden inBayview.

However, Elton said this would not befair on residents of the greater Strandfon-tein. “We will never be able to satisfy allresidents, but the park needs to be in a cen-tral location that is easily accessible for themajority [of residents],” he believes.

Community worker Mario Oostendurpbelieves a central park could help bring thecommunity together.

A lack of recreational facilities has longbeen a point of contention in the coastal vil-lage.

Many believe youth are lured into a lifeof crime and grime due to the shortage ofextra-mural activities offered in the area.

“Considering the lack of social-centredfacilities, which contributes to the levels ofsocial ills, there is a need for a facilitywhere social interactions can take placebetween all residents. This would enhancesocial cohesion in our very diverse and di-vided community,” he believes.

The park should be centrally located tonot only serve Bayview, San Remo, Strand-fontein Village and Old Strandfontein, butalso Rocklands, Oostendurp says.

“A centrally located park which servicesthe entire ward rather than an entitlement-driven location should be considered.”

A vacant property on Spine Road zonedfor community facilities may be the ideallocation, Oostendurp suggests.

“The erf which is 6.8ha is owned by coun-cil and is centrally located, accessible bypublic transport and borders a main arteri-al which runs through the ward. The pro-posed location would create a new focalpoint on Spine Road with False Bay as aback drop. This central space wouldachieve a sharing or networking space thatsupports the everyday life. It will alsoserve as a human-centred urban space thatis respectful to environmental values,” headds.V Send your comments and suggestions to [email protected].

Increasing threats of mob justice have po-lice on high alert.This comes after a man was beaten to

a pulp in a suspected vigilante attack lastWednesday.The man is believed to have robbed a

woman of her cellphone in Colorado Park.Sector commander Warrant Officer An-

thonyAppels says the incident happened inMontana Street early that afternoon.“There were two suspects, but the one

managed to get away,” he confirms. “Theone who was caught by residents was beat-en up. His face was swollen and bleeding bythe time police arrived at the scene.”Residents are urged to not take the law

into their ownhands. “Youwill be arrested.Call us and let the justice system decidewhat the criminal’s fate is,” he maintains.Lentegeur police spokesperson Captain

Nomathemba Mgwebile reiterates this.“The community is strongly advised to

not take the law into their own hands, asthis constitutes a criminal offence and ispunishable should they be found to havebeen involved,” she stresses. “Residentshave the responsibility to report crime to

Labour pains atthe Mitchell’sPlain Day Hos-

pital will soon be athing of the past.

ProvincialMinis-ter of Health The-uns Botha onWednesday 20 Au-gust launched thepatient-centredma-ternity care code toput a stop to mis-treatment experi-enced by pregnantwomen accessingthe health facility.

A string of com-plaints about theMitchell’s PlainMaternity and Ob-stetrics Unit (MOU)was received,prompting govern-ment to turn thetide.

The attitude ofstaff was one of themaingrievances re-ported.

Staff being stressed and overworked aswell as inadequate infrastructurewere citedas major contributing factors.

“Government is here today and has donesomething about this facility. We can buynew equipment and build new facilities, butthere is one thing I cannot buy and that isstaff’s attitude,” Botha says. “I can howeverassure you that this guide will not only bea document. It will be practised and you, thepatient, will experience it.”

The patient-centred code aims to ensurewomen are given support and treated withrespect when visiting State facilities.

A teenager in her last trimester feared giv-ing birth at theMitchell’s PlainMOU in 2012after being mistreated People’s Post previ-ously reported.

The report prompted the minister to visit

the facility.Speaking at the launch, an official said:

“At theminister’s last visit thereweremanychallenges. We don’t confess to have re-solved them all, but we have made greatstrides.”

Professor SueFawcus of theMowbrayMa-ternity Hospital says the code of practicewas developed by a task team following com-plaints received from patients.

“Every woman should be treated with re-spect. We have zero tolerance to episodeswhere this does not happen,” she says.

Another official thanked patients for theircomplaints.

“We don’t like to see complaints, but thisprogramme would not have been estab-lished if it were not for complaints re-ceived,” she said. “It’s all about the attitude

– not what you say,but howyou say it.”

The provincialhealth departmenthas committed topatient-centredcare as a funda-mental principle ofits draft 2030 strate-gy.

Whilemany havereported bad expe-riences at theMitchell’s PlainMOU, first-timemother Cade War-den tells a very dif-ferent story.

“As a first-timemother I heard a lotof negative stories,but the staff at theMitchell’s PlainMOU have been re-ally helpful in ex-plaining things tome,” she says.

“I didn’t have allthe answers, but al-ways left feelingbetter equipped todeal with my preg-nancy as nursesavailed themselvesto assist.”

Parents, moreparticularly fa-thers, who de-

fault on their mainte-nance payments, ha-ve got another thingcoming with a newwave of activismagainst this age-oldissue.

Initiated by the De-mocratic Alliance’sWomen’s Network(DAWN) and suppor-ted by other politicalparties in cabinet,the movement sym-bolised by the wea-ring of a blue sasharound the shoulderhas made plenty of headway in only sixweeks.

FatherlessRobinson says as much as 48% of children

inSouthAfrica growup eitherwithout amo-ther or a father and that in tens of thousandsof these cases, the absent parent does not ho-nour their responsibility to pay child main-tenance.

“This adds to the downward cycle of po-verty as many of these children are then de-nied a proper education,” she says.

She adds that this is the single biggest ob-stacle against these children to successfullyaccessing opportunities for education, jobsand a normal adult life.

“A little more than a month from laun-ching the campaign, DAWN, along with thejustice department, National Credit Regula-tor, credit bureax and the Department ofTrade and Industry, have managed totighten up on credit regulations that will seeto it that maintenance defaulters arebrought to book,” she tells People’s Post.

In consultation with the above entities,new draft regulations for the credit industrywill now provide for maintenance defaultsto stay on a person’s credit record for fiveyears, or until a court rescinds a default jud-gement.

Furthermore,maintenance paymentswillhave to be included in all affordability asses-sments completedwhen applying for new lo-

ans and clients willbe required to decla-re if they have anymaintenance defaultjudgements againstthem.

Twopronged approach

Robinson says the-se draft amendmentswere published in theGovernemnt Gazettethree weeks ago forpublic input, afterwhich it will be pro-mulgated.

In addition to this,the Department ofJustice has also draf-ted a bill to amend theMaintenance Act,that will enable cre-

dit bureaus to track down maintenance de-faulters who can’t be found by the courts.

This bill will empower credit bureaux tofortify maintenance judgements to affect de-faulters’ credit records.

But the fight does not stop here and is ba-sed on a two-pronged approach, the other ad-dressing the issue of the efficiency of themaintenance courts.

“Womenoftenhave to take offwork, spenda lot of travelling money and sit in lines forhours at the maintenance courts, while theperpetrators make a mockery of justice.This has to stop and we have launched aninvestigation into all aspects to address thesituation,” she says.

PressureSeveralmaintenance courts in Cape Town

have already been visited by Robinson andDAWN has started to apply pressure for thejustice department to obtain more funding.

“There simply are not enough courts, in-vestigators, prosecutors or socialworkers todeal with the unnaturally high case load ofmaintenance cases. More money will haveto be made available by government,” shesaid.

With the investigation, Robinson is alsoworking toward setting up a “court watch”to monitor the workings of maintenancecourts.

claims that Mitchell’s Plain pupilshave a playground game simulat-

ing rape.Principals and parents in the area re-

cently raised the alarm about a new pri-mary school game called “Rape, rape”,in which schoolboys simulate rape withgirls whom they chase and catch.Provincial education minister Debbie

Schäfer says if children, including pri-mary school children, are engaging ingameswhere the boys runafter girls andpretend to rape them, as reported, “thisreflects a serious problemwith our soci-ety”.“The fact that primary school chil-

dren even know what rape is and how

it is done is tragic. It is equally concern-ing that this is allegedly happening inour schools and the first time we hearabout it is via an anonymous source inthe newspaper,” Schäfer says.No reports of such incidents has been

brought to the attention of the provin-cial education department, she con-firms.“I have made enquiries with our dis-

trict office in Mitchell’s Plain, wherethese games are allegedly taking place,and I can confirm that we have receivedno reports from the public or from anyof our schools engaging in this game,”Schäfer says.The department has now launched a

full investigation into the matter, and

district officials will visit schools thisweek to engage with principals.“Rape isnot a game.The levels of sexu-

al violence in our country are unaccept-ably high. One way of assisting in limit-ing the incidents of this violence is toteach our children from a young agewhat is acceptable behaviour and whatis not, as well as sending out a verystrong message that unacceptable be-haviour will not be tolerated,” shestresses. “We will do whatever we canto educate pupils that this kind of behav-iour is just not on.We also appeal to par-ents and religious institutions to edu-cate children at home and after schoolabout the differences between right andwrong.”

The case against three men arrested in con-nection with the murder of a Tafelsig pen-sioner has been provisionally withdrawn.A neighbour found the body of a 66-year-

old woman in a Badsberg Street home onWednesday 13 August.The three suspects were arrested the next

day and appeared in the Mitchell’s PlainMagistrate’s Court on Monday, says policespokesperson Sergeant Jerome Voegt.“The case has been provisionally with-

drawn for further investigation. The post-mortem results are also yet to be finalised,”he confirms.The men are aged 23, 24 and 26.“The arrests followa tip-off received about

the items stolen from the deceased beingsold in the Mitchell’s Plain area. The items,including a TV, DVD player and cellphone,were recovered in Beacon Valley and Tafel-sig,” Voegt says. “Officers then followed upfurther information which led to all threesuspects being apprehended and arrested inTafelsig.”

continuing to treat as ta-boo the subject of alcohol

use with your children maylead to untold heartache inthe future.

To underpin that theytake responsible drinkingand the fight against alcoholabuse seriously, South Afri-can Breweries (SAB) haslaunched a new responsibledrinking campaign called18+.

SAB says 18+ is a call toaction for adults to be rolemodels and protect all ouryouth.

“No one under 18 shouldbe drinking alcohol and it is up to us to stopour denial about the situation and do some-thing about it,” says SAB in a statement.

The statistics remain shocking:. One in two teenagers in the average

South African home is a user of alcohol;. Thevastmajority of parents think their

teenagers don’t drink;. Around 15%of boys and 8%of girls said

they had their first drink before 13 years;. People who begin drinking before the

age of 15 are four times more likely to be-come alcohol dependent than those whohave their first drink at age 20 or older;

. Teens who use alcohol are three timesmore likely to be involved in violent crime;

. 67% of teens who drink before the ageof 15 will go on to use illegal drugs.

Added to these are the fact that teenagers’brains are still developing and even limitedalcohol consumption stunts their psycho-logical and physical development, saysSAB.

And the US National Institute on AlcoholAbuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) stated in a2010 publication that most studies show thebenefits from allowing children to drink inthe home or controlled environment arenon-existent.

There are simple steps to introduce be-fore parents or guardians need to resort tointervention methods. These include the

following conversation points:. It is not okay to give your teenager a

drink so you can “control it”;. It is not okay to send your child to the

local tavern to get alcohol for you;. It is not okay to take your child to a pub

with you;. It is not okay to do nothing when you

see teenagers drinking;. And it is not okay for alcohol to be a ta-

SABR director Stasha Jordan says only7.2% of South African women breastfeed.

“One premature baby dies every 20 min-

utes. And low breastfeeding rates result inthe loss of the most vulnerable members ofour society,” she says.

About 20 000 babiesunder 1.8kgand 70 000babies under 5kg die annually due to mal-nutrition.

A local organisation is sowing the seedsof change.

The Women’s Hope, Education andTraining (Wheat) Trust has for yearsbeen growing small community projectsto empower women at grassroots level.

The trust recently awarded 19 grants toenable women in disadvantaged commu-nities to reach their full potential.

This follows the over 100 grants award-ed across the country last year.

The funding is awarded to carefully se-lected projects which cover everythingfrom gender-based violence to chickenfarming, says Wheat spokesperson Ja-nine Fortuin.

“The trust envisages a South Africawhere all women enjoy their humanrights and have access to education, train-ing and sustainable incomes, made possi-ble by promoting a culture of giving.Throughgranting anorganisation,Wheatis able to enrich an entire community asthe women running programmes or initi-atives often employ other women withintheir community,” she explains.

One of the beneficiaries is Bulelwa Ma-yikwaa of Philippi. She has no educationand has a hearing impairment. Her hus-band left for the Eastern Cape and nevercame back. She now produces buildingblocks to support her daughters’ educa-tion.

After the trust sponsored equipmentand basic materials for her business andassisted Mayikwaa with her administra-tion, sales and marketing, her company isnow the leading bricks supplier in hercommunity.

Carol van Wyk runs the Shechemproject in Hanover Park to empowerwomen and youth.

The grant has made it possible for herorganisation to continue educating thecommunity, she says.

“Our main aim is to build a better com-munity through programmes that pro-vide leadership training for the youth andeducation for children. We also hold class-es for women to develop and empowerthemselves, for example through skillstraining. Receiving this funding means alot to us. People don’t easily give fundingand it is stressful to not know where fund-ing will come from,” she says.

Wheat director Soraya Mentoor ex-plains that funds are used to change theperception of women from disadvantagedcommunities.

“We want to change how women areperceived – especially in the rural areas– as poor and powerless. We recognise theneed for women who are located in geo-graphically marginalised, under-re-sourced and poverty-affected communi-ties, to have their voices heard alongsidethose of other women activists,” saysMentoor.

Ultimately Wheat wants to change theposition of women in society to enablethem to access more resources and havedecision-making power over resourcescritical to their development, she says.

Toyota’s 86 added a much-needed wowfactor when it was launched in 2012.Toyota South Africa has launched a

new high-spec derivative and a new limitededition model, the latter only available inred or white. Only 86 units will be sold here.In short, the limited edition model comes

Kia has released the first images of itsnew Kia Sorento.

The photos show a striking, moremature appearance, with bold, swept-backstyling and sophisticated surface detailing.

Kia South Africa says the new Sorentowill arrive locally during the first quarterof 2015.

Dimensions have increased in length(+95mm to 4.78m) and a 15mm reduction inheight (down to 1.68m), while the 80mmlonger wheelbase at 2.78m makes for moreleg room in all three seat rows.

Its new design is an evolution of the cur-rent vehicle, says Kia.

It incorporates “fresh, visual elements in-spired by the Kia Cross GT concept” thatmade its debut at the 2013 Chicago autoshow.

In terms of design, the front of the car fea-

tures a larger, more upright ‘tiger-nose’grille, with a distinctive three-dimensionaldiamond pattern, and long, swept-backheadlights. The lower roofline, higher belt-line and more muscular, rounded shoul-ders at the rear give the car a dramatic ap-pearance.

Kia’s vice-president of overseas market-ing Soon-Nam Lee says: “While we have re-tained the name based on the tremendoussuccess of the current model, the all-newSorento has been completely redesignedand re-engineered, and promises to sur-prise customers with its thoroughly updat-ed styling, a host of new convenience andsafety technologies, as well as enhancedspace, driving comfort and handling re-sponse.”

The all-new Kia Sorento will be show-cased in Korea in late August. It will makeits European premiere on Thursday 2 Octo-ber at the 2014 Paris Motor Show.

What in the world is happening to our children?In some Southern Suburbs the police are scratching

their headswithworry about child-influenced crimes andgangsterism.In Mitchell’s Plain children are believed to be playing

a game called “rape, rape” in which rape is simulated.The education department is rightly worried that pri-

mary schoolboys should be so informed of such heinouscrimes that they imitate the act upon schoolgirls.These children – our future adults and supposed leaders

– are armed and dangerous.They’re fearless and, through their actions, laugh in the

face of an impotent legal system which will more thanlikely dither the process for so long that the victims havelong written-off justice.There are hardly any real fair deals for victims.Ifmost serious crimes, suchas rape, gounreported,who

even bothers to report lesser crimes like cellphone theft?The easiest action is to blame absent parents. In most

cases this, together with an environment that breeds andencourages violence and easy money, should bear theburdenof guilt. But the other reality is parents,whomakebabies and leave their social skills in the hands of teach-ers, religious organisations and other adults, are equallyunlikely to admit they have failed miserably at raisingtheir children well.So what is society to do?There are simply too few do-gooders to go around and

those who run organisations tasked with the mandate tocare, cannot be blamed for sometimes simply running outof steam.Violence begets violence and the evidence of such ac-

tions plays out daily on the streets of Cape Town – alsoknown as the rape capital of the world.One would not be remiss in wondering about the char-

acter of our children.What kind of adults will they be?We live in hope.

Homeless need very littleThanks so much for your sensitive edito-rial comment “Rough life” (People’s Post,31 July).I agree with every word.I work in an area (in town) where there

are a group of homeless people, about 60,andwheremost of their needswere beingmet – there was a bottle store, (whichprobably sold papsakke on the quiet;cheap, small quantities of liquor); a dayhospital; public toilets where they couldwash up during the day (these werelocked at night, as these would be theplaces where people got raped and drugswere traded); and black trash trollies,which could double up as sleeping quar-ters during violent storms.The bottle store is being closed down,

so they might move on a street or two.Their behaviour is not always nice; theywould have the occasional “Jou ma se%*@#” fights”.But I so did not want the area to be gen-

trified.I enjoyed seeing them around and

greeting them sometimes.They remind one of so much – privileg-

es to be grateful for; that “it could happento you, too”; that people really might

want another kind of life to our ‘canned’21st century life; that life has an upsideand a downside, which might be inter-preted differently by different people. Ihope they don’t move too far.They don’t need verymuch.Occasional

clothes hand-outs; the City sometimes is-sues them shoes; small income, car-guarding, or collecting recyclable cans orbottles; and food.There’s always lots of leftover throw-

away food from restaurants and foodstores.And liquor.There are very sad parts to the story,

such as when their comfort is not liquor,but drugs (the young generation); whenthey are used andmanipulated by sophis-ticated crime gangs; when they arekicked aroundby the police at night (real-ly, it happens); when the babies born tothe few women among them – and the la-dies are passed around – are abandoned,born with Foetal Alcohol Syndrome, andtaken away to another uncertain life.C’est la vie?Anyhow, I’m grateful for your editori-

Long queuesfor SassaI would like to know who is accounta-ble for the long queues at various paypoint outlets. [Is it] Sassa or the vari-ous business outlets?On the first of each month, payouts

to all Sassa card holders, whether forpensions or child grants, all form partof the same queue.Standing at Checkers at Westgate

Mall as early as 08:30 recently, half ofthe people in the queue were childrenwith children. Checkers opened itsdoors at 09.00 and my sticker numberwas 228.From the entrance of the mall to the

entrance of Checkers it is about 50m,which took me exactly four hours toget to the tills for payout. Pensionersstanding inaqueuemovingat a snail’space is not healthy.All the youngsters vacated their

place in the queue to find seating ac-commodation, while the seniors werestill standing, as all of them had stick-ers in numerical sequence.Getting to the tills, most of these

youngsters had more than one card todraw money from.Can Sassa not have separate payout

Abuse of painkillers with codeine; benzo-diazepines like valium for anxiety and am-nesia and appetite suppressants/stimulantsrank as the top most abused general OTCdrugs.“Many people believe that a doctor’s pre-

scription makes their medication, even ifthey do take a little more than prescribed,safer than other drugs,” says principal offic-er Peter Jordan.“These medications are safe and effective

when taken as directed, but overdosing onany drug can cause serious and potentiallyfatal side effects if abused,” he says.Long-term addiction to any form of medi-

cation, whether OTC or prescription drugs,

can lead to liver and kidney damage, and insome cases, heart and blood pressure prob-lems.Jordan says today one of the biggest chal-

lenges healthcare professionals face is beingable to detect the problemasmany “addicts”GP hop, getting prescriptions from morethan one GP to get enough medication fortheir fix.Thishas led to adefinite drive amongmed-

ical schemes to see a more coordinated ap-proach to healthcare. With a single, nomi-nated GP on a designated network, the doc-tor canbecome the “coordinator of care” andtherefore work directly with the memberand monitor care.
