Last year, Mondale High School scored 95,1 percent, followed by Oval North High School with 93,5 percent and Rocklands High School with 88 percent. Mondale improved their pass rate by eight percent, Oval North increased their statistics by 17 percent, while Rocklands dropped by five percent. Glendale Secondary increased its pass rate by 26 percent, making them the most improved school in Mitchell’s Plain. Owen Briddgens, principal of Mondale High School, says he is “satisfied” with the schools results. “However, you are only as good as the last results. Three years ago, the school averaged over 99 percent. This year our aim is to improve on the last result, as we always aim for a 100 percent quality pass” he says. He adds that the school’s success was due to the hard work and discipline of the learn- ers, teachers and the support of the parents. “Teachers and learners sacrificed lots of time by attending after-school classes and Saturday classes throughout the year. Dur- ing these sessions pupils were taken through several past exam papers and taught how to interpret questions that were asked in vari- ous ways. “All pupils were encouraged to work on their own ad come back to the tutorials with questions. This approach made a big differ- ence as the learners were not just given a quick-fix answer. It allowed them to start tackling the problems themselves. This en- couraged learners to exercise great discipline and their efforts paid off,” Briddgens said. He added that the matric teachers have al- ready started with extra classes, in prepara- tion for the year ahead. “We are not wasting time, as this is some- thing we don’t have. The learners need to be ready for their exams.” Spokesperson for the Western Cape Educa- tion department (WCED) Bronagh Casey says the most important success factor was effec- tive teaching and learning as schools applied the basics correctly, assisted by the district where necessary. “Special measures included Saturday mat- ric tutorial classes, holiday programmes in various subjects, the K’Way Maths Pro- gramme, WCED study guidelines called “Tips for Success”, Telematics satellite lesson broadcasts, and study guidance by circuit school psychologists,” says Casey. She added that most high schools in Mitch- ell’s Plain increased their pass rates. No schools had matric pass rates of less than 60 percent, “which means that there are no un- derperforming schools in the suburb”. Meanwhile, the principal of Oval North High School, Na-eem Cassiem, says he is “ex- tremely proud” of all the learners and teach- ers, as they have worked very hard to achieve this result. Cassiem says: “The constant attendance of all extra tuition programmes by the learners reaped rewards. The girls at the school also did very well. “Women are the backbone of society. If they are well educated, their children too will be well educated – resulting in an educated com- munity.” He added that he will be increasing his visi- tations to all matriculants parents to ensure that their parents understand the demands of matric on their children. “I am pleased that the culture and mindset of learners are changing; in the past if asked if they were going to further their studies, they would say ‘no, it’s for other people’. How- ever, many of them are now starting to use the opportunities that are presented to them. PSA member makes a difference in educationAS PART of its back-to-schoolcampaign, Proudly South Afri-can has lauded three membercompanies making a positive dif-ference in education, the lives ofchildren and in job creation.

This week, People’s Post spoke toChanine Nel, owner of Rock Series, which specialises in supplyingschools with mathematics andreading program software fromGrades 0 to 10. Rock Series wasfounded in 2004 by Chanine, whowas inspired tomakeadifference inthe lives of the youth.

What products do you supplyto schools?

We create mathematics and read-ing programs for the children inSouth Africa. All lessons are ex-plained step by step in full colour

with audio, allowing the children towork in a stress-free environmentand even in the comfort of theirhome. The product range compris-es of mathematics, reading and anelectronic dictionary (with Zuluwords included) and several educa-tional games to stimulate growthand development.

We also have self-marking testswhich can assist parents withrecord keeping. We don’t know ofany other program in the world thathas all these three products pack-aged as one unit.

What is great about your pro-gram and business?

The Rock Series program enablesus to assist previously disadvan-taged schools and orphanages withtheir schooling academic needs andthis gives them the confidence to

grow into self assured children andpeople.

What are some of the high-lights of your business?

We had the honour of helpingNOAH (an Aids orphanage) along-side ABB, an international compa-ny.

Why did you join the ProudlySouth African campaign?

As a small business it is very im-portant to have the Proudly SouthAfrican brand behind us.

People in South Africa want toknow where products are made andwant to support locally made highquality products. South Africanparents want to know that South Af-rican developers understand thechallenges facing our children ineducation.

What are your goals for 2012?We would like to employ 10-20

more agents. If they each sell 10units they could earn R10 000-plusper month. In this way we can make

a positive impact on job creation inSA. Rock Series is also a part of the“93 000 jobs for Mandela Day’’ cam-paign and would like to create em-ployment through education.

THE Proudly South African “BuyLocal” campaign has welcomednews that over 100 000 new jobswere created in December.

Reacting to the results of the Ad-corp Employment Index releasedrecently, Proudly SA CEO LeslieSedibe said: “We welcome the an-nouncement, given South Africa’scurrent unemployment figures andthe world economic climate. Let’sdo all we can as a nation to encour-

age this trend in 2012.”According to the index, 103 327

new jobs were created in December2011 – the fastest rate of growth innine months.

It’s also the first time since 2009that no sectors reported a decline inemployment. The index also showsthat all employment categories re-

ported growth in December, withthe fastest being temporary work(15 percent) and permanent jobs(six percent).

“Our campaign encourages con-sumers to buy local products anduse local services to help createjobs.

“In 2012, we continue to call on

South Africans to support localproducts. Let’s stand up as a nationand rekindle the passion behind lo-cal being ‘lekker’.

“Last year, Proudly South Afri-can also made a call to the industryto create 93 000 jobs as part of the‘93 000 Jobs for Mandela Day’ cam-paign.

Jobs boost given a thumbs-up “Today’s news is a fitting tributeto the legacy of Madiba,” said Sed-ibe.

Although the number of jobs inSouth Africa is still 850 000 belowthe peak reached before the 2009 re-cession, Proudly South African re-mains hopeful that an increasingnumber of people and businesseswill buy home grown products andservices, to boost job creation andpromote national pride.

Swimmers urged to take careWITH the recent warm weather, thousands ofresidents and visitors have flocked to beachesand swimming pools, and the City has urgedall bathers to exercise caution.

Councillor Tandeka Gqada, Mayoral Com-mitteeMember forCommunityServices, says:“Our lifeguards arepatrolling thebeaches andpublic pools in full force and all bathers mustplease adhere to their instructions for theirown safety.

“Residents are reminded that alcohol is notpermitted on beaches or at public swimmingpools. Alcohol impairs your judgement, bal-ance, co-ordination and reduces your body’sability to stay warm.

“It is therefore extremely dangerous todrink alcohol before or while swimming, div-ing or boating,” Gqada says.

“Unfortunately, tragic drowning incidentscan happen very quickly, mainly due to a lackof safety knowledge. Beach and swimmingpool users must please take responsibility fortheir safety by familiarising themselves withthe safety guidelines and rules below beforeusing any of the beaches or public swimmingpools.”

She reminded people of the following beachsafety guidelines:

. Read and obey the beach regulations andfollow instructions or advice from lifeguards.

. Report hazardous conditions or incidents

to lifeguards or other beach personnel.. Do not enter the sea if you cannot swim.. Only swim in areas supervised by a life-

guard – usually a zone between two red andyellow flags.

. Never swim alone.

. Swim parallel to the shore if you wish toswim a long distance.

. Supervise children closely, even whenlifeguards are present. A personal floatationdevice is recommended for children.

. If caught in a rip current, swim sidewaysuntil free and do not swim against the pull ofthe current.

Eskom warns of possibleloadshedding in CityESKOM has told the City of Cape Townthere is a possibility that Cape Towncould experience load-shedding in thenext few weeks.

This is due to Eskom’s inability to meetrising demand for electricity throughoutthe country.

The risk of load-shedding has been ex-acerbated by on-going maintenance workthat Eskom has undertaken as it grappleswith boosting supply capacity in order toavoid sustained power outages.

As the load-shedding in 2008 revealed, the process is a difficult one. However, asresponsible citizens, we can all do our bitto avoid the negative impact that load-shedding would have on our country byreducing electricity usage.

Eskom urged Capetonians to use elec-tricity sparingly in order to avoid poweroutages. It said switching off all unusedelectrical appliances or using alternativeenergy would help to conserve electricity.

Eskom said it was putting measures inplace to avoid load-shedding.

Everyone looking to renew their spent CFLs for free

raise your hands!

www.eskom.co.za/idm

Five years ago, we managed to convertmillions of South Africans to using CFLenergy saving light bulbs and savedyou money. Now, five years later, we’reback to change your energy saversthat have reached the end of theirlife. Continue to use energy savers tocollectively save South Africa’s energy.

Energy saving lightbulbs have anenvironmental benefit because theycut your lighting cost by using lesselectricity and last up to eight timeslonger, resulting in a reduction ingreenhouse gases. The small amountof mercury that energy savinglightbulbs contain is almost used upby the time the lightbulb is ready fordisposal. So try not to break the lamp anddispose of CFLs at participating retailers.

Old CFLs can be exchangedfor new ones in two ways:

a. There will be a door-to-door exchange(people will come to your door to dothe exchange).

b. Self exchange points will be set up incertain areas, where you will be ableto go and do the exchange.

Don’t miss out!Save energy and save money!

The exchange period will run from November 2011 to January 2012.

Westridge Yankeesflirt with relegationMARK WARD

FORMER nationalbaseball star JasonJonathan remains

steadfast in his belief thatthe Westridge Yankeeswill not be relegated fromthe Major league.

The Yankees have lost 12 oftheir last 15 games and theMitchell’s Plain based side isstruggling in all depart-ments.

On Saturday things againwent awry for Jonathan inhis attempt to get his youngside on the winning track, when they were beaten 1-11by VOB at the Chukker Roadsports fields.

The team’s poor battingand shaky pitching saw thembeing outplayed by a VOBteam who looked determinedto make a serious challengefor the league title.

But Jonathan’s problemsstarted before the match, when only 10 players arrivedfor the game.

“This is an example of ourchallenges. Some players didnot have transport to thegame,” said Jonathan.

“Another problem is thatthe players are young, andsome are students.

Others have jobs, and inmany cases they have to workon Saturdays.”

Jonathan, who played forthe national team from 2000

to 2003, was entrusted withthe coaching duties at the be-ginning of the season, and ithas been an uphill battle eversince.

According to the former in-ternational, the team’s lack ofexperience is one of the rea-sons for their poor form.

“The second challenge isthat there are not enough ex-perienced players around.

We need manpower in or-der to succeed with our fu-ture plans,” said Jonathan.

“The former great of theclub must be commended formaintaining the club’s com-petiveness over the past 20years since its establishment.

“I know that they have al-

ways given their best, butnow it’s up to the new groupof players to continue the bat-tle in making this club thebest in the Western Prov-ince.”

Jonathan appealed to theteam’s “former greats” to“come and lend a hand”.

During the game, pitchersDean Martin (9hits) and Lu-wayne Du Plessis (5hits),found it tough to controlVOB’s batters.

Adriaan Langeveldt (5hits)and Glen Josephs (2hits)shared the pitching for VOB.

Meanwhile, Athlone Ath-letics beat Bothasig 4-0 withCarl Michaels credited withthe shutout.

Grassboots achieves against all oddsLIAM MOSES

AT MOST football clubsteaching young playersskills on the field is the

most important objective, butat Grassboots Football Club,in Vredehoek, teaching play-ers skills to use in everydaylife is more important.

The club was formed in 2009 af-ter chairman Stuart Diamond re-alised that there were no soccerteams based in the Cape Towncity centre. The side has sincegrown into an important supportsystem for young footballersfrom all around Cape Town.

Many of the club’s playerscome from areas such as TheKraal, Phillipi, Mitchell’s Plainand Khayelitsha, and it is policythat no one is turned away, evenif they cannot afford to pay mem-bership or registration fees or ifthey do not have boots to play in.

“I started this club to create afacility for kids in the City Bowland to create a project where so-cial change and social progresscould be carried out,” said Dia-mond.

“I’m a believer that sport is atool for change. That is why theclub supports children whowould normally be turned away

because they won’t be able to payfees. The club has a policy thatthosewhocanpay their feesmustpay and those who can’t or canonly pay a small amount will besupported.”

The club provides players witheverything they need to play thegame, including boots, playingkit, as well as mentorship, adviceand informal life-skills training.

According to Diamond, theclub started providing some ofthe players with meals.

However, despite these obsta-cles the club has grown exponen-tially in three years of existanceand has also racked up a few no-table achievements.

Grassboots had only eightplayers at the team’s first train-ing in 2009. It currently has over150 members.

Last year the club fieldedteams in eight different age-groups, ranging from U7 to U17.They will be represented by asenior side for the first time thisyear.

According to Diamond, theclub’s U15 side won the First Di-vision league title, while the un-der U17 and U13 teams were bothrunners-up in their respectiveleague and cup competitions.

But Diamond has stressed thatwinning titles is not the objective

of the team.“We are a community soccer

teamthatwants to create anenvi-ronment where kids can feel safe, where they can express them-selves on the field and fall in lovewith the game again,” said Dia-mond.

“The key for me as chairman isthat we have happy kids and hap-py parents. If a kid comes to agame and they don’t walk awaysmiling then we have failed. Andif a kid feels happy then you willstart to see the results on thefield. We teach the kids that win-ning and losing isn’t the impor-tant thing, sportsmanship is”.

Diamond added that the team’ssuccess can be judged on the highlevel of participation from mem-bers of the community.

The club has made several oth-er important strides since beingformed. Three of the team’scoaches have completed SouthAfrican Football Associationcourses and two other have com-pleted first aid courses.

Grassboots FC will be hostingan open day on Saturday 28 Janu-ary and anyone interested injoining the club has been invitedto attend.

For further information pleasecontact Stuart Diamond on 082387 7315.
