StoryAlice Lidell is 20 years old and a first year medical school student at Edinburgh Univer-sity. After finishing her studies and becoming a doctor, she wants to work for “Médecins sans Frontières” in Africa to help people. Therefore she has to do an internship to get a certificate and experience in being a doc-tor. The hospital she really wanted to work at and already got accepted for an internship cancelled at short notice. For that reason she has to do her internship in an institution for disabled people.This is her last possibility for doing an intern-ship, otherwise her dream of “Médecins sans Frontières” won’t come true. She is curious about the new situation, but also insecure and she hopes to remember all the things she learned at university.As she arrives in the institution for disabled people, she immediately notices the good looking attendant David. She wants to ask him out but hasn’t the heart to do it, therefo-re she wants to impress him with her well-done work. If Alice is in a bad mood, she can talk to her best friend and flat mate Dinah. Alice holds Mr. Caterpillar in high esteem; in return he supports her in every complicated situation.

Ally

NameDinah Miller

StoryDinah is 22 years old and Alice‘s best friend and flat mate. She is studying social peda-gogy at Edinburgh University in the second semester. As Dinah is Alice best friend, she frequently gets short messages, calls, emails, … from Alice in which she gets to know something about Alice‘s workaday life. When Alice needs support, Dinah tries to help her as good as she can. Although Dinah hasn’t any idea of medicine she knows much about behavior and communication and active listening, which she gets to know during her studies. Therewith she is motivating her friend. Alice tells Dinah something about her fear to act in a wrong way. She also tells her about her insecurity. Dinah also knows every-thing about Alice’s feelings for David.

Object of desire and second Ally

NameDavid W. Rabbit

StoryDavid is 26 years old and an attendant wor-king with Alice at the institution for disabled people. He is very attractive. He hasn’t had a relationship for two years (since he started to work at the accommodation). He is mar-ried to his job, but he wishes to get to know a woman he can get old with.Meeting Alice the first time, he instantly feels connected to her, but he thinks she is a little clumsy. As there is a lot to do at work, he hasn’t got the time to date anyone. When Mr. Caterpillar gets snowbound, there is a lot more work falling on him. David is de-pending on Alice to help him keep the situa-tion in the institution under control. When Al-ice needs help, David tries to help him. Now Alice has to show David what she is capable of. In the end, when everything worked out fine, Alice has the heart to ask David out. But David is so impressed of the good work Alice has done and of how much she learned that he asks Alice out on a date on New Year's Eve before she can ask him.

Mentor

NameMr. Caterpillar

StoryMr. Caterpillar is 52 years old. He owns the institution for disabled people. He is meeting Alice first on her intermission interview. He is married and has 3 children. Though always beeing in a hurry he always listens to the problems of Alice. Mr. Caterpillar is even-tempered and evens stays calm in stressful situations. Mr. Caterpillar is a heartily man and introduces Alice in her first days to the institution. He is introducing her to all the residents and is showing her all the impor-tant places. Mr. Caterpillar has been working for 18 years in the institution and knows the disabled people by rote. Mr. Caterpillar always knows what is goinig on and has everything under control. He helps Alice to put her fears and barriers aside.

Antagonist

StoryAlice‘s biggest opponent is Mrs. Hearts, the chief of her department in the institution for disabled people. She thinks that Alice is incompetent and not prepared to work in the institution. Mr. Hearts disrespects Alice and lets her know that. She‘s giving Alice a really hard time. She thinks that she is the director of the institution and knows everything bet-ter. She has to be right after all and she can’t bear when others discover her failings (bad handling with the learning disabled people, outdated and conservative perspectives). Who dares to unmask her, will be punished.

NameSybill Cheshire

StorySybill is 20 years old and grins all day long. She has been living in the institution for half a year. In her free time she loves to read, watch or collect fan articles of the Twilight-Saga. She especially loves the smile of Jacob. She already got lots of posters of him and is constantly looking for new ones. She is looking forward to get the latest issue of the “Popcorn” for days in which there is a big article of the Twilight-Saga. As she returns from the kiosk having bought an issue of Popcorn, she‘s taking her bag and jacket into her room. She is leaving her new Popcorn in the lounge. As she returns, March is rea-ding her new magazine. She gets angry and disgruntled.

StoryTim und Tom are 18 year old twins. They have been living in the institution for disabled people for four years. The brothers do every-thing together. They even wear the same clo-thes every day. You can only separate them through the small scar on Tim’s bottom lip.They love to be in the center of attention. But since today, it’s March‘s birthday, everyone looks after him. The two boys don’t get the required attention and the situation is escala-ting. Tim throws plastic drinking cups through the lounge and Tom starts to undress himself.

StoryMadeleine is 16 years old. She moved into the institution just a few weeks ago. She has a reading and writing disability. Therefore she has no graduation. Until now she has not found any friends in the institution. In addi-tion she dislikes all the advisers. The only per-son she likes is David. Unfortunately he does work in another department and just visits her in emergencies when no other attend-ant is available - like today: Mr. Caterpillar is off work. But there is the new trainee, Alice. She has already visited Madeleine before and questioned her about David. For this reason, Madeleine has been disgruntled the whole day.As it is March’s birthday Hazle wants to tinker a birthday card. She hopes that March will be her friend. She has tinkered for hours and is really satisfied with the result. In order to practice writing she writes the words “Happy Birthday” on a piece of paper several times. Although it worked before, Madeleine swaps two letters in the end while writing on the card. She gets upset and throws the card off the table starting to shout and to cry.When Alice appears in her room, she is get-ting more aggressive and throws the cutter at Alice. She’s telling her to leave and to get David.

StoryMarch is 29 years old. He has been living in the institution for 8 years. He has difficulties in keeping things in mind. He also has prob-lems communicating with others. It is very important to March to be able to rely on a certain routine. As soon as something miscel-laneous happens March starts to panic. In ad-dition he is very excited for festive days like birthday or Christmas. When he feels blue, he starts to sputter.Today it is March’s birthday. However he just had an outburst of fury. The attendants made a cake and carried it on a tablet into his room. One of the attendants wanted to light the candles. Doing this he hit the tablet and the cake fell down. March immediately got very excited and filled with rage. David successful-ly calmed him down by talking softly to him.Now, after the accident, everything appears to be fine but March always repeats the words “the cake, the cake”. Alice was asked by David to make sure that March keeps calm.

StoryHenry Doorknop is 28 years old. He has been living in the institution for 5 years. He loves to read books. He reads about one book every week. However Henry suffers from an articu-lation disability. Therefore he is a maverick and is preferably on himself. As an attendant brings him his lunch, the attendant asks him what he is currently reading. Henry has problems to find the right words and cannot explain what he is reading. After this incident he becomes aggressive. 90 minutes after his burst, he becomes deeply depressed.

NameHazle Mouse

StoryHazle Mouse is 21 years old and has been living in the institution for 3 years. She is a small and plump woman with mouse gray hair which she wears as a braid. She loves ea-ting sweets. Hazle is an unimpressive woman and prefers to wear oversized sweaters. Every day she wants a refill of breakfast, lunch and dinner, but Mrs. Hearts forbids it all the time. Therefore there are often disputes between both of them. Their relationship is very strained. In the ordeal of Alice, Hazle is first annoyed by Henry, and then Alice becalms her. But be-fore the 90 minutes needed for recovery end, Mrs. Hearts criticizes Hazle. Hazle runs away and Alice has to look for her. When she finds Hazel she can convince her to come back. In the end Mr. Caterpillar signs off Mrs. Hearts because of her unprofessional behaviour.
