With more than 60 years of history Silverstone has become one of the most prestigious venues dedicated to motorsport. Completely revamped in recent years, a multimillion pound investment saw the completion in 2010 of a first phase of works to greatly improve the venue, making it one of the fastest tracks on the MotoGP calendar and earning high praise from the World Championship riders who enjoyed the new layout. The ‘Silverstone Wing’, a state-of-the-art, multi-million pound complex, became a new landmark at the circuit from 2011, thus adding to already breathtaking facilities at Silverstone. Dunlop Moto Riders Looking For Heat At Cool Silverstone

Great Britain’s Silverstone circuit is one of the longer tracks on the FIM Moto2 and Moto3 Championship calendars with the 5,900m long track containing ten right and eight left hand corners. The exciting racing, at what is many riders’ favourite track, more than makes up for the fact that fans will only see the bikes pass 17 times for Moto3 and 18 times for Moto2 – some 11 fewer laps than shorter tracks such as Le Mans and Jerez.

The tyre allocation at Silverstone is selected more for temperature requirements rather than the track surface. The track has straights where cooling can be an issue with the need to retain as much heat as possible to go quickly and safely through the following corners while getting the tyres back up to temperature.

In Moto2 last year at Silverstone, all top-six riders chose the medium 302 compound for the front and hard 997 for the rear. Both of those tyres are available for this season with additional choice of a harder front and a softer rear. The top performing Moto3 riders all used the medium option so it will be interesting to see if anyone breaks from the trend to try to gain an advantage.
