● The largest art school in FranceÉcole européenne supérieure d’Art de Bretagne is made up of four unique Art schools, situated in Brest, Lorient, Quimper and rennes, and with a total of 900 students - it is the largest Art school in France.

● State-recognised national diplomas with eCts credits towards equivalent qualifications in other countries.

● High-level technical workshops, with equipment on each site freely available for the use of all students, supervised by specialist technicians (engraving, screen printing, bookbinding, woodwork, metalwork and modelling workshops, a photo studio and lab, fab lab, etc.).

● Specific teaching methods divided into three phases >> Year 1 = foundation coursethis common-core syllabus, taught in all higher art schools, covers both theoretical foundations and the practice of Visual arts, for all three options. >> Years 2-3 = main course phasestudents have opportunities to experiment with techniques, tools and materials, and consolidate their knowledge through a combination of basic teaching and methods-cen-tred approaches. this phase leads into personal research work. >> Years 4-5 = project phase in their final two years, students engage in personal research, helping them to establish their own, independent creative approach and output.

● ResearcheesAB currently focuses on six fields of research in art, communication and design, in partnership with the members of université européenne de Bretagne (ueB) as well as a number of French and international schools (royal College, ecole telecom Bretagne, etc.) and companies (spectaculaires, etc.).

OPTIONS

DESIGN OPTIONthe eesAB design option favours a pluralistic approach to the profession of designer. the school teaches a method that systema-tically encourages research, critical distance and creativity to stimulate the relationship of people with their environment, objects and their use, using a project-based approach.

● in Brest, the approach is centred on the object’s practical relationship with world around it, including its social, spatial and cultural context.● rennes takes a fundamental, cross-disciplinary approach to design, focusing on three broad areas: urban design; landscapes and artefacts; and scenic and digital design.

Professional outcomes:object design, furniture design, space planner, stage designer, interior architect, digital designer, prototype designer, model-maker, teacher, etc.

ART OPTIONthe art option focuses on artistic creation, for which the objectives and resources are chosen freely by the artist, depending on their personal aesthetic, social and political commitments.

● the Brest site trains artists and designers; the art option aims to pass on the conceptual tools and techniques required to work in arts and visual creation. ● in Lorient, artistic research and Visual arts practices are embodied in the concept of “narratives”: creating images (drawing, photography, computer design, video), storytelling and literary practice, graphic design and editorial design.● in Quimper, the unique Art option provides teaching open to all forms of practice, featuring a strong collective dynamic (‘plat-forms’) coupled with each student’s personal artistic research. ● Art teaching in rennes focuses on experimentation, critical thought and openness to all forms of expression.

COMMUNICATION OPTIONthis option offers space for investigating the signs and signals of communication, and the relationship between words and images. it interrogates professional issues such as commissions and acceptance in today’s social and cultural environment. it also emphasises personal artistic creation, allowing future graduates to envisage an independent artistic career in graphic design, typography, photography, illustration or audio-visual communica-tion.

● in this option, Lorient prepares students for the DnAp Commu-nication graphique (equivalent to BA Graphic Communication).● rennes provides training for the DnAp and the Dnsep Communication (which is equivalent to BA Visual Arts and mA Visual expression & Communication), with two distinct “Graphic Design” options.

EESAB, a new state institution for cultural cooperation (EPCC), has been set up as part of a move to harmonise higher education across the EU with the European Degree System. This transition applies to all higher arts and culture institutions overseen by France’s Ministry of Culture and Communication and the Ministry of Higher Education and Research. This EPCC has been established by city district authorities in Brest, Lorient, Quimper and Rennes, along with the Region of Brittany and national government. It also receives support from the Departments of Finistère, Ille-et-Vilaine and Morbihan, as well as a number of companies.
