FirstClass: EvaluationThe program begins by understanding your school’s vision and discovering your unique starting point.

A successful FirstClass: Evaluation will reassure your leadership team of the value of investment and inspire your teachers to discover the pedagogical benefits of iPad.

We’ll also help your IT staff identify areas of your infrastructure which may need to develop as the deployment grows.

Vision & PlanWhat can you achieve with iPad in classrooms?

Working with our network of Apple Professional Development trainers, KRCS can help you develop the vision which is so essential to a successfully planned and executed deployment

Wireless NetworkWill your wireless network cope?

Let us survey your existing wireless infrastructure and propose any improvements that may be needed as the deployment grows.

iPad hardwareWhich devices suit your needs?

KRCS can share the decisions made by other schools and why they were made. We can also offer our advice on how Apple’s product cycle may effect decisions further down the line.

ProtectionWhat level of physical protection is required?

We can provide a wide range of sample cases and offer advice from real experience on how your choice can affect things like usability in small hands to the cost of insurance premiums.

TrainingHow will the staff learn to use iPad effectively?

KRCS work with Apple Distinguished Educators and Apple Professional Development trainers to deliver classroom-focussed training tailored to your needs. In our hands-on ‘Getting Started’ workshops, teachers will work with the apps which will be used in the classroom and develop simple lesson plans to discover unique benefits of iPad

Volume Purchase Program VPPHow do you buy apps in bulk?

Normally working hand-in-hand with your management solution KRCS can help you leverage the benefits of Apple’s Volume Purchase Program. Register for VPP at deploy.apple.com before you start your FirstClass: Evaluation

Device ManagementHow will apps and settings be managed remotely?

Device management is a key part of any successful deployment, and KRCS can suggest a solution which is right for you. Whether that be over-the-air Mobile Device Management (MDM), wired management using Apple Configurator or a combination of the two, it’s important that you become comfortable with the chosen solution during this evaluation phase.

AppsWhich apps and how much do they cost?

This is the ideal time to identify the apps that you will need and the costs associated with them. In our experience many of the best apps are free! Because some of the training and professional development decisions made further down the line may be influenced by apps, try to identify as many of your final selection as possible at this stage.

FirstClass: DeploymentHaving successfully taken your first steps, it’s now time to see the benefits of iPad on a larger scale.

The FirstClass: Deployment stage is all about taking the learnings from your FirstClass: Evaluation and shaping a scheme that will suit your needs now and scale comfortably in the future.

KRCS have worked with iPad since their first introduction in 2010, so let us take away the risk of this large project. Our tried and tested solutions are simple, flexible and affordable.

Apple IDs StrategyWhich Apple ID will be used on each device to install apps, iBooks etc, and can Apple IDs be created in bulk if required?

Depending on the chosen deployment model of your school, KRCS can suggest the best Apple ID strategy for app deployment. Advanced security checks on the creation of Apple IDs mean that bulk creation should be a last resort rather than a chosen strategy.

Sync, Charge & StorageHow can the devices be stored securely in school whilst charging up batteries?

KRCS provide robust and technically-proven iPad carts of varying capacities. Simple features like colour coded baskets allow teachers to deploy small sets of iPad independently of the cart where needed. These solutions also offer rapid charging and can manage up to 32 USB-connected devices simultaneously for charge or sync.

Web SafetyWill the devices be properly serviced by existing web filters?

If the answer to that is no, KRCS can offer industry leading transparent layer 2 web filters from Lightspeed Systems, designed to work with your existing network and iPad.

File SharingHow will students access their files, and make their work generated on the iPad available on other platforms?

As you move to the deployment phase it becomes crucial to share work and move files efficiently between students and teachers. KRCS offer class-leading solutions giving simple access to Windows Server- based shared folders.

Device PreparationCan devices be pre-configured before they arrive in school?

Depending on the size of the deployment device preparation can be very time consuming. KRCS can offer a wide range of service from simple device activation to full supervision and network / MDM preparation.

Showcase LearningHow can students show their work to teachers or the rest of the class?

Apple TV is a fundamental part of iPad deployment and represents a seamless way for staff and students alike to present on the big screen. KRCS can offer advice on how best to deploy Apple TV, and how to manage its use by students.

App DeploymentHow will the required apps be deployed to devices?

Having already created a VPP account during the evaluation phase, KRCS can work in conjunction with your chosen Apple ID strategy to suggest the simplest way of deploying apps to your devices.

Device SettingsHow will the devices be configured, and settings applied/modified on every iPad as efficiently as possible?

Using the management solution chosen during the evaluation phase, KRCS offer best practice on how best to configure devices without having to work laboriously on each iPad.

10 11

FirstClass: One to OneThe true power of iPad as a transformational learning tool is realised when each student and teacher have their own device.

The FirstClass: One to One program uses the knowledge and experience of the KRCS technical and education teams to design a unique and affordable personalised learning program for your school.

We give special consideration to financial planning and parental contributions where required. To reduce unexpected costs insurance, warranty and device protection are a focus. And of course, professional development is crucial so your teachers bring fresh learning ideas to the classroom.

FinanceCan the cost of the devices be spread or shared?

Our specialist finance solutions are tailored for UK schools and comply with all DfE regulations. They allow you to spread the cost of the devices, give flexibility to retain or hand back the devices at the end and have options to collect parental contributions where required.

Apple ID StrategyShould the same Apple ID strategy be used from initial deployments through to One to One?

This is one of the only strategies which may need to change from your earlier deployment phases. Shared devices in a One to One deployment should incorporate individually-owned personal Apple IDs. KRCS will continue to offer it’s experience in this area and ensure that the school deploy apps using the most efficient method.

Web SafetyHow can we continue to offer web safety for iPad when they leave our site?

Depending on your obligations to students it may be a requirement to continue filtering web access on iPad when they have left campus. Again in collaboration with Lightspeed Systems we can offer industry-leading solutions that will filter web access wherever you and your iPad are around the world.

InsuranceWill existing insurance policies protect devices within and away from school campus?

Our fully underwritten insurance policies offer protection against accidental damage, fire, theft and flood and have zero excess and unlimited claims. Perfect for devices in the hands of children. The school can budget with confidence with a fixed price and risk-free finance and insurance scheme.

Asset TrackingHow can the school keep track of which device is with which student?

KRCS can provide an inventory at the time of deployment, along with bespoke labelling of boxes with user names. We can also offer advice on how to maintain Asset tracking using your chosen management solution

Student OnboardingWhat is the best way to handout the devices to students and provide basic training?

Having worked with One to One deployments previously, KRCS can provide advice on what worked best in those schools, and if necessary supply staff to assist on the day. Student onboarding sessions are a key part of ensuring that both student and iPad are ready to go!

Continued DevelopmentHow can the school ensure the continued development of staff knowledge?

Hopefully it’s clear just how important training your staff will be to any size of iPad deployment, and it’s more important than ever with a One to One. KRCS will continue to work alongside Apple accredited APD trainers to maintain the effectiveness of iPad in your classroom.

“We have benefited from a really integrated service. KRCS’ expertise covers insurance, leasing, peripherals, staff training and technical advice, with everything customised for education”.

Apple ID CreationMost One to One deployments require end users to have their own Apple ID, and it can’t always be guaranteed that students will arrive at on-boarding session properly prepared.

If you generate significant numbers of Apple IDs from one site in a short space of time it can cause a blacklisting on Apple’s servers, temporarily stopping your project in its tracks.

KRCS can offer guidance on how to avoid these problems and, if necessary, request a whitelisting for your site during the deployment period.

Web safety for your whole schoolExisting web filtering services are not always able to adapt to the requirements of modern mobile device filtering, but KRCS are proud to offer the range of Lightspeed Rocket Web Filtering appliances which are flexible enough and powerful enough to suit all size iPad deployments, from one class set to a full One to One deployment.

Large scale fitting of protective casesUsing a protective case with iPad is recommended. Depending on the level of protection required it could be very time consuming fitting a case to every iPad in large deployment. KRCS can fit cases before the devices arrive.

“If you stand outside the classrooms, you can really see the difference in the dynamics of a class using the iPad and one that isn’t....I’m now confident that our pupils will leave school equipped with knowledge and understanding of the very latest technology, placing them at an advantage for further education and their future career.”Anne Bufton-McCoy, Headteacher Belvoirdale Primary School

FirstClass: TrainingOur training adapts and builds upon your existing skill set so that confident, competent teachers are inspired and versatile.

Apple Professional Development

These hands-on workshops are designed to show how the use of Apple technologies can enhance the learning environment.

KRCS are fully accredited to deliver Apple Professional Development (APD) workshops to your school, using qualified trainers with classroom experience. Our trainers have a great understanding of education because they are educators themselves, which is so important when delivering APD sessions. Workshops are flexible and you can also begin with any category, depending on faculty needs.

One to One

When every student uses iPad, learning anytime, anywhere will have the most impact, so our training programme will be scaled to address all the aspects affected. Not only will teaching and learning experience new outcomes but teachers will become more efficient and affective when they have been prepared for this type of deployment with our training.

Foundations workshop We understand that not all teachers have confidence when using technology, so this workshop is designed to encourage this by using Apple devices and to explore how they might be used in teaching.

Curriculum workshop This workshop will encourage teachers to start delivering and generating new content. It is designed to inspire and reinvigorate teachers’ imaginations, using iPad in different and creative ways.

Support workshop The focus of this workshop will be on ensuring the success of the deployment, so it is aimed more at school leaders and ICT staff.

Learning how to use these technologies effectively is vitally important for support staff, but a traditional classroom environment isn’t the most effective way of taking on this knowledge.

KRCS have found that the best way of developing this knowledge is in your own school, where factors unique to that environment can be addressed which may not even have been covered in a classroom course.

Our technical mentoring service includes an initial half day or full day of bespoke coaching in your school for up to three people, followed by continued access to your KRCS mentor for ongoing advice.

Typical Subjects Covered:-Device Preparation & Restoration: Preparing devices for the initial deployment, and restoring them to this original state for re-deployment

Configuration Profiles: What can be achieved with configuration profiles, and their use on school devices

Over the air management (MDM): Managing device settings and restrictions using an MDM

Apple IDs: Implementing the chosen Apple ID strategy as efficiently as possible

App deployment: Sending Apps out to devices in bulk

VPP & Managed distribution: Leveraging Apple’s VPP and Managed Distribution model for deploying apps

Content delivery: Ensuring that content is available when required, or delivered to devices as necessary

Web Safety & Authentication: Making web access safe for students and manageable for IT staff

Technical Mentoring

The rise of iPad in schools has brought about many new workflows and technologies which are vital to their deployment and ongoing management, but often very new to support teams managing existing IT.

ChallengeBelvoirdale Primary School was looking for a way to engage and excite pupils with imaginative ways of learning.

Aware that 75% of families did not have access to the Internet at home, the school was concerned pupils would be at a disadvantage when moving up to secondary school.

The school was keen to encourage pupils to become more independent and creative as well as ensuring that every pupil had access to online learning tools and technology.

SolutionThe school purchased iPad mini, alongside device management and security solutions from Apple specialist, KRCS who also provided advice, installation, support and training.

iPad is now being used throughout the school, giving every pupil the opportunity to develop their potential through creative learning and technology.

ResultsThe school have embraced the technology with enthusiasm and as a result, pupil engagement has improved.

They are able to learn independently and make their own choices, encouraging creative thinking and ownership of the tasks given by the teacher.

A recent OFSTED Report cited a “buzz of learning” throughout the Belvoirdale Primary School, which the school believes is as a direct result of the new technology being introduced.

Case study

Belvoirdale Primary SchoolBelvoirdale Primary School has introduced iPad mini into the classroom and is now reaping the benefits of interactive learning.

“If you stand outside the classrooms, you can really see the difference in the dynamics of a class using the iPad and one that isn’t....I’m now confident that our pupils will leave Belvoirdale Primary School equipped with knowledge and understanding of the very latest technology, placing them at an advantage for further education and their future career.”Anne Bufton-McCoy, Headteacher

When head teacher Anne Bufton-McCoy took up her post at Belvoirdale Primary School in January 2012, OFSTED had placed the school in special measures. It also had a bad reputation around the local area, as Anne had discovered when she posed as a grandmother looking for a school place for her granddaughter.

Undeterred and once in her new role, Anne set out to change all that. OFSTED reported that the children were “not making enough progress” so changes to learning in the classroom had to be made.

After some research, it was clear that Apple solutions were best suited to the school’s needs so Anne contacted KRCS, her local ‘Apple Solutions Expert in Education’.

“It was clear Apple led the field in education technology and offered a great selection of educational and non-educational Apps,” said Anne. “Plus, with only a part-time ICT technician employed at the school, we needed technology that would link the devices to a central management system to ensure easy, and sometimes remote, syncing and updating.”

Gina Buxton, Anne’s PA, said: “The project went out to tender but we chose KRCS because we had complete confidence in them. I knew I was dealing with a valued and trusted Apple partner who would work with us to find the best solution to the school’s vision of improving learning.”

“Glyn, Tom and technician Chris Goulbourne from KRCS, knew exactly what they were doing and answered every single question I threw at them. The support was, and still is, there whenever I need it.”

Change can often meet with resistance and, indeed, some teachers were sceptical as to the benefits of teaching with the new iPad mini. However, they were given the devices to take home and ‘play with’ over the Summer holidays. “They came back full of enthusiasm and with some great suggestions for Apps to help enhance learning,” said Anne.

Glyn delivered an iPad inspiration session and staff responded really well. A hands-on Apple Professional Development (APD) session was also tailored to the specific needs of the school and helped empower teachers to confidently use Apple products to transform teaching and learning.

Deputy Head, Kelly Robbins, has been excited by the progress of the children. “There is so much more engagement in the classroom. Using the iPad mini in lessons is breeding a love of learning through a whole different dimension,” she said. “Plus, whereas before, the children had to sit at a desk with a laptop, they are now free to move around the room and can even move outside to make the most of our “Forest School” outdoor classroom.

Such has been the success of the Apple integration, the school invested in a further 30 iPad mini plus Apple TV in April 2014. Twelve screens, one in each classroom, have been installed to facilitate teaching. Rachel added: “Having Apple TV is great for teachers. Instead of standing at the front of the classroom and using a whiteboard, having our own iPad and Apple TV means we are free to move around the whole class and interact much more with individual pupils.”

“The marked progress really fits in well with OFSTED’s vision of ‘Independence and Rapid & Sustained Progress’,” said Anne. “My next goal is to provide every teacher with an iPad to enable them to assess pupils more easily in the classroom. This will enable teachers to keep an eye on each pupil’s progress and identify and address any gaps in their learning.”

Case study

Loughborough Endowed SchoolsThe vision is to provide One to One devices to over 2,000 pupils, with all but the youngest taking them home every day.

Challenge Loughborough Endowed Schools (LES) is a charitable foundation comprising three schools; a preparatory school and a girls and boys secondary school. The iPad was selected to form the basis of an innovative learning environment for their pupils. The vision is to provide One to One devices to over 2,000 pupils, with all but the youngest taking them home every day.

LES sought a reseller with the ability to provide a complete solution to their technical, financial and professional development needs.

Sue Jackson, leading the project for Loughborough High School, said “We have benefited from a really integrated service. KRCS’ expertise covers insurance, leasing, peripherals, staff training and technical advice, with everything customised for education”.

Each school had different needs in terms of web filtering, mobile device management and security. KRCS were able to greatly reduce the time required to research all these areas by sharing experience gained at other schools. Sue said “KRCS were able to cater for widely differing needs, from our prep school and two senior schools. Having a partner with a hot-line to third party vendors, trainers, technical experts, other suppliers and of course, Apple themselves, has been a real asset”.

SolutionKRCS provided a finance package designed specifically for schools running mobile learning schemes. LES needed a flexible scheme that allowed for a phased deployment over a number of months plus options for parents to take ownership of the devices at the end of each deployment cycle. The solution provided from Apple Financial Services is affordable and precisely suited to the school’s needs.

KRCS and the school consulted extensively before the initial deployment on how best to configure the devices for both staff and students. All devices were prepared by KRCS technicians with apps, restrictions and configurations as required and smart water was applied.

ResultsLES and KRCS have adapted their plans and sought solutions to issues and challenges faced along the way. The school staff have been meticulous in their planning and made the role of the reseller a real pleasure. Coupled with KRCS’ determination that ‘nothing is too much trouble’ the scheme is progressing smoothly and with great success. Sue concluded “We selected KRCS as our partner for this project because they combined technical expertise with a friendly, helpful attitude. We have never regretted our decision; they have supported us every step of the way, right from the initial vision to placing iPads in students’ hands, and nothing has been too much trouble”.
