RELIGION DEFINEDI do not know how philosophers may ultimately define religion; but from Micah to James it has been defined as service to one’s fellow human rendered by following the great rule of justice and mercy, of wisdom and righteousness.

—Theodore Roosevelt

September 2 & 3, 2017 / 2 y 3 de septiembre, 2017Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Sept. 2-3 22nd Sunday in Ordinary TimeJesus knew that he would face the cross. Like Jesus life will bring us to difficult places and we will face obstacles. Sometimes on our path of discipleship the obstacles are within us: I‘m not gifted; I don’t have the time, I am homebound. Sometimes the cross we are asked to carry is very near to us: praying for someone who annoys us; taking the time to recycle; finding and buying fair trade products; learning about Church teaching on an issue that troubles us. What cross is yours to carry this week?

Dear parishioners,Our thoughts have been directed toward the damage to people and

property that began late Friday, Aug. 24 when Hurricane Harvey hit the coast near Corpus Christi. Over these past days we have pictures communicated by the media of the caring efforts of first-responders and neighbors who have come together to give help and comfort. We shall hear of the effects of this storm for many years. Some persons have lost their lives and others all of their property.

Thank you for your generous offering of prayers and help. During the course of the year, we ask for contributions to Catholic Relief Services and Catholic Charities of Central Texas. Over these past days and for the time to come these agencies of our Catholic Faith will offer the much-needed aid that will enable all those who are effected to begin to rebuild their lives and homes. Let us continue to turn to Our Lord in prayer.

“Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted.”“Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.”

Matthew 5:4,7Mercifully hear the prayers of your people, we ask you O Lord,

and mercifully deliver us for the glory of your Holy Name. Amen.***

Our Parish Festival is two weeks away! This is an opportunity for all of us to work together to advance our parish in both financial resources and in the building of our community. Please arrange your personal schedule so that you can participate in this important event and invite your family and friends.

Let us pray that our Parish Festival will be an event that is both profitable and well attended.

o God, you made holy the Cross of your only begotten Son by his precious blood. May we always rejoice in honoring the Holy Cross and receive your ever-present protection. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Your Pastor,

Father David.

LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR/CARTA DE NUESTRO PARROCO

Padre David.

Statement of Bishop Joe S. Vásquez and Auxiliary Bishop Daniel E. Garcia of Austin

Concerning the Catastrophic Effects of Hurricane Harvey

Together with our brother bishops, we urge all people of good will to be united with those suffering as a result of the catastrophic damage caused by Hurricane Harvey. We are deeply concerned about the parishes, communities and people that have been and will continue to be impacted by the storm. We urge all people to continue to follow the safety directives of the local emergency management officials. Even as the hurricane has been downgraded, some victims will feel the long-term effects of the of the storm system for years to come.We encourage the faithful of the Diocese of Austin to be spiritually united with the communities affected through prayer and support. Because we believe that “God is our refuge and our strength, an ever-present help in distress” (Psalm 46:1), our neighbors require our resolve to help them in their time of need. Considering the unprecedented flooding and the disheartening circumstances in which our brothers and sisters find themselves, we are reminded that Jesus requires us to help our neighbors out of mercy and love (cf Luke 10:29-37).

Catholic Charities of Central Texas is coordinating our diocesan relief efforts. We encourage you to visit www.ccctx.org for more information on how to offer help and to provide financial assistance for the victims of the storm.

News from the Principal’s DeskThe new school year began for our Santa Cruz Cardinals on Au-

This week we hosted a Curriculum Night for all school families. Parents sat in their child’s classes to hear about all of the interesting things they would be learning this year!

Our main focus right now is getting ready for our Parish Festival. We ask all parishioners to sell, sell, sell those great raffle tickets. We have five wonderful prizes this year from $5,000 down to $500. The school has a goal of selling $30,000 in tickets. If we do, I get to kiss a GOAT!!! I sure hope it’s a cute one!!

Let’s keep the people in the Houston and coastal areas in our prayers as they recover from Hurricane Harvey.

Have a blessed week,Mrs. Flanagan

SANtA CRUZ CAtHOLIC SCHOOL/ESCUELA CAtOLICA

Bendiciones,Sra. Flanagan

This week’s feature:On May 13, 1981, during the celebration of the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima in St. Peter’s Square, Pope Saint John Paul II miraculously survived three shots at point-blank range by a professional assassin. On the one-year anniversary of the assassination attempt, he traveled to Fatima, Portugal to offer his gratitude to Mary as he was certain “it was a mother’s hand that guided the bullet’s path” and saved his life. He renewed his consecration to Mary and in his homily taught the importance of Marian consecration for all Catholics. As Saint Louis de Montfort writes in True Devotion to Mary, consecration to Jesus through Mary is “the surest, easiest, and most perfect means” to becoming a saint.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

COME AND SEE!Are you, or do you know anyone, who has not yet been baptized or was baptized in another Christian faith? Ever wondered why Catholics bless themselves with the sign of the cross, what they believe about communion, what’s up with all those saints and statues, and rosaries, and standing, sitting and kneeling? Why does Mary seem so important? Well, why not come and see and come and learn?

This year’s RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) Program begins on Thursday, September 7. There’s no cost, no obligation, no commitment necessary. In a series of friendly, informative and spiritually exciting classes we will explore the major things Catholics believe and why. We will learn more about the Mass and what is happening and why. Learn about prayer, scripture, sacraments and Church history, and much more.

Are you Catholic and interested in learning more about your faith? Would you be willing to be part of this program to be part of a faith community willing to journey with and support those interested in learning more about our faith? Now may be the moment that God is calling you to be part of an exciting ministry.

So, if you are currently a non-Catholic wanting to learn more about Catholicism, or a Catholic willing to be part of an exciting ministry, please call Sandy Dodson at (512) 213-4554 or Deacon John Kerrigan at (214) 886-8239. You may also email Deacon John at [email protected].

God may be calling you. Listen, pray and come and see….

There is only one person in sacred scripture who had the expe-rience of living with Jesus from birth through his Resurrection Mary, his Mother.

On Friday, Sept 8, Covenant of Love will celebrate the birth of Mary, our Mother, by hosting a special movie night in Deane Hall from 7-9pm. All parishioners are invited and free childcare is provided!

Full of Grace - The Story of Mary the Mother of JesusIn this beautiful movie, we see Mary now living her final days on earth, pondering her life with Jesus. Set ten years after the Resurrection, Mary eagerly awaits the return of the Apostle Peter from his apostolic journeys. Arriving at Mary’s home after years of traveling, preaching and narrowly escaping death, Peter ex-presses the overwhelming responsibility of preaching the Word amidst heresies and conflict.

Providing the strong encouragement that only a mother can, Mary helps Peter re-discover the truth that he is not leading, he is following, and walking in the light of God’s grace and strength.
