Procedures for working

in the Solid State labs at

ISOLDE

Important Phone Numbers: (from any CERN phone)

Safe working in the labs: in one page • The ISOLDE complex is a controlled area: ALWAYS WEAR YOUR DOSEMETER! • No eating, drinking or smoking in the lab. • Always sign the logbook when starting/finishing your shift.

•When working with radioactive samples, always wear gloves and glasses and dispose of them in the proper bins after each operation. • Plexiglass shields are available when working with b-emmitters: use them! •NEVER pick up tweezers or sample which are behind Pb walls/enclosures without wearing gloves. •If in any doubt, use a contamination monitor to check for activity.

When finished measuring: store your sample.

•Place the sample in a plastic bag. •Indicate the isotope implanted, number of atoms /activity & date of implantation. •Place sample inside Pb castle (there are many of these around, if one can’t be found call Karl (164553). •Place in one of the Yellow safes in the chemical area.

Before leaving the labs, check yourself using the hand-foot monitor

Chemical working area: Fume Cupboard + glove boxes. Biophysics/”wet” + diffusion experiments

Entrance and Thermal treatment area Hand-foot Monitor & logbook; Ovens, RTA, Evaporator.

PLEASE WRITE DETAILS ABOUT EACH COLLECTION IN THE SPREADHSHEET

Using the current integrator: Shortcut for the Current Integrator is found in d:\ on the computer under the pAmmeters

#23 = sample #10 = collimator

Type in desired number of atoms. Then push start/stop

Push these buttons to select sample (SSamp) or Collimator (SScol) respectively.

These four buttons control the movement of the sample holder/collimator (left and right). Upper two buttons move “quickly” the lower two are for small steps to get to the precise value.

Changing sample position (found on the middle rack in the control room)

Values of the sample positions and the collimators. We will probably be using the Square collimator for this run.

Beam gate

We will be mostly using Low mass (maybe also High Mass). Lift up to open. You will see that the Low/High mass beamgate is open on the screen.

Changing Mass

Enter in this field the required Mass. E.g. 149Tb…ENTER!!!!!! Then push send.

High voltage

If all is ok the high voltage should be “just on”. It will look like this. If it trips, the rectangles will turn red. Then you push “RESET” and then “PULSING” to bring it back. (if the problem persists then you need to call the engineer in charge.)

Vacuum system (apologies for the picture) To open valves you need to be logged in as “isoop”. Check this here…

GHM and GLM beamlines are here. Left = GHM; right = GLM.

Filled green triangles means that the valve is OPEN. Note: for GLM you usually open valve(1) first then (2). This is because of peculiarities with the interlocks. You can usually open the valve when the vacuum is ~2e-5mBar on the Gauge of the GLM.

Proton Request:

This light comes on when the protons are on… The switch to enable it is here (we are on GPS). Inside the door indicated.

Vistar Screens

Basically, if the bars opposite turn red then something is wrong. Most obvious things are high voltage and protons (current will drop to zero…) and will be seen on the middle screen too…

Call the booster if there are no protons. Use the speed dial (MCR)

Engineer in charge for this week. Call if there are any problems.
