Maths with Mrs Squiers!

This year in maths we have been focusing on the students’ growth mindset. A growth mindset is instilling the belief that everyone is a maths person and in class we focus on our growth in maths. Some students are currently sitting on 200% growth which means they are learning 2 year’s worth of math content in 1 year. On Wednesday afternoons, the high school students have been learning how to play darts with Mr Peter Hayden. Their skills are improving and they are enjoying learning how to play the different games. Football darts is a favourite at the moment. Thank you to Peter Hayden and his helpers for coming in each week . The reason we play darts in maths is that whilst scoring, students are improving their fluency and automaticity in addition and multiplication.

Year 9/10 H@SS during term 3

The Year 9/10 students have been very busy this term. During week 2 the whole school undertook tree planting activities in conjunction with the National School’s Tree Planting Day and the Rotary Club of Quairading. Students at QDHS planted around 2,500 seedlings over a day in two locations both in and out of town. The year 9/10 students were leaders for the younger students on the day and regularly monitor the previous year’s plantings over Heggerty Road throughout the year. One of the sustainability responsibilities of the Year 9 and 10 students is to regularly work on improving the veggie patch, this includes the ongoing maintenance of weeds, harvesting of crops, improving the soil and seedling planting duties.

This term during our Civics and Citizenship studies the year 9s and 10s undertook a Parliamentary Debate on the issue of The Republic versus a Constitutional Monarchy (week 5). They had to research and perform as Parliamentarians using their persuasive language to convince the Parliamentary Back Benchers of their arguments.

All High School students attended an excursion to the Cemetery Reserve during week 6. They participated in a variety of science and H@SS activities observing the flora and fauna and learning their Ballardong names. They were treated with some special guests who helped them with their set tasks and discussed the importance of being connected to country. In addition, there was some yummy traditional food provided for lunch which was much appreciated by all.

During week 6 Quairading DHS held their Book Week activities and several year 9/10 students created a terrific Curious Creature character. Congratulations go to Kaeshia Colbung, Jaxon Adams and Adam Cosgrove on their Curious Creature entrant.

On the 27th of August the year 9/10 students were very lucky to have a visit from Acting Sergeant Duffy, he spoke about his service as a Police Officer, how they could become involved as a possible occupation, and explained the roles and responsibilities involved on the various levels within our Government, the Australian Constitution and Laws. An important component of our Democracy is the Separation of Powers and the Federal and State Laws that we all have to answer to.

During the week 6 Monday Morning Meeting (MMM) the year 10 students received

their ‘Leavers” Jumpers and can be seen proudly wearing them at school.

Year 8/9/10 English with Mrs Garrett In English, we have been learning about persuasive speeches while closely analysing various speeches from a military context. The students then created their own speeches—the year 8/9s recreating existing speeches with a photo slide show to accompany them. It was great to see speeches by Barack Obama, Nelson Mandela and Sojourner Truth; and the students’ ability to identify anaphora, metaphor and rhetorical questions. Their accompanying slide shows demonstrated their understanding of context. The year 10s researched and wrote their own speeches on topics of their choice. Their presentations to the class were passionate and clearly spoken, demonstrating their ability to control pitch and pause to engage the audience. It was a great practice for their end of year speeches on awards day. Currently we are comparing ideas in various texts whilst studying the films ‘The Great Escape’ and ‘Chicken Run’. Book Week was great fun as we dressed up as characters from ‘The Great Escape’.

My speech - 2020 climate change by Adam Good afternoon everyone. I am here today to tell you how terrible climate change is. Each year millions of particles of car-bon dioxide get let out into atmosphere. It is a real big problem climate change is very, very important. It is happening right now. The ice caps are melting causing the sea levels to rise. It is getting worse each minute and as a world we can do some-thing. We are wasting too much food, we are driving too much, we are using far too much plastic, we are making too many factories’ and producing too many materials that will get used for a couple of years then thrown out. We need to stop somewhere. People you may think cli-mate change is not a thing. Look at the drought, look at the rising oceans, look at the floods and they are just ruining the environment. Mining is another big thing we need to stop. One day we can look back and see how bad the environment was, then we can think about how we fixed all of the climate change issues. What is the solution people? Well people where do we start. We can stop wasting food. It not as hard as you think, you can just eat the food and if you don’t want to eat it all give the food to your animals or don’t cook as much food. We can stop mass producing technology for our own use. We can recycle the technology. We can use less plastic. Just recycle it or ask for a card board straw. All businesses should stop plastic use. We can use biodegradable metals. We could even get carbon dioxide out of the air and turn it into carbon in the ground. We may need to create machines to do this but the technology is here so we can do this. Stop using diesel cars, we can just use electric cars like Tesla or even better there is public transport that we can use. We can stop mining full stop. Imagine a world without big pits of ore. We can recycle all the stuff that we have and there will be no need to mine. People imagine using your phone for 5 years then you take it to a JBHifi or a Kmart and just put it into box then they take that box and recycle it. People that’s needs to happen right now. Shopping’s centres could be doing this right now. Big companies like Microsoft, Google and Apple need to help us against the fight of climate change. Apple could stop mass producing phones and recycle their old ones. Google could change their sever stations to use less power - people imagine that. We can use less power as a world we can get rid of coal power plants and use sun power or wind power. People think about that for a second. People we can work together and do this as a state, as a nation and as a world. Our prime minister and presidents need to help and everyone guess what? You can help bring a change. We need to act now before it is too late. Think for one second not having climate change…We don’t need to create much new technology to stop climate change we have it right now. But tech company’s need to make it cheaper for the everyday person to buy electric cars. My Vison is…I Would like to see a future with everyone using public transport or having electric car. I Would like to see

Mega tech company’s recycling and not mass-producing products. No food- waste. I would like to see the see levels not

rising. Imagine not using as much diesel for cars truck airplane ships just imagine. I would like to see girls and guys please

stop climate change you can help. This is very important; climate change needs to stop right now. I would like to see world

with no climate change.

Thanks for listening let’s make a change.

Year 9/10 Science

Have you ever wondered why your eyes are the colour they are? Or why some people can roll their tongue and others can’t? In Science, the year 10s have been learning about genetics and how traits are passed down through generations.

They created some amazing DNA beaded keychains in Mrs Garrett’s science/craft class – to help them remember the structure of DNA.

The year 9s have been looking at ecosystems, and the effects on populations, from both natural and man-made events. The topic finished with an excursion to the cemetery nature reserve, where we practised using quadrats to estimate the population size of an organism.

It was interesting to put into practice what they learnt via the in-class simulation using m&ms and smarties on a pa-per grid
