Dear Parents and Carers, Thursday of last week was our STEM showcase. Mrs Kelsie Squiers coordinated this wonderful event to culminate a week of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths activities in classrooms across the school. Teachers and students had a wonderful day with exciting, inspirational and innovative ideas on display. The showcase gave parents and community an opportunity to see what the children have been learning and creating in this exciting area. In pursuit of successful students, our teachers and school staff regularly provide alternative educational experiences in the form of excursions. Excursions reflect the commitment and efforts of teachers in providing activities to further students’ learning and social skills development outside the normal school environment. These experiences are integrated with learning programs and conducted within department and school policy and guidelines. When this event has been held previously it has been a fantastic opportunity for the children and I encourage our children to participate. You can find details elsewhere in the newsletter. This Friday (18th) is the East Avon Sports Association Interschool Athletics Carnival at the town oval. We will be hosting eight schools and two hundred and fifty students to compete in the regular Track and Field events. Mrs Johnston and Anderson have put together a stellar program and we welcome all comers to watch the action at the oval on Friday. Events begin at 9.30am and conclude at about 2pm. Come down and support our very own Quairading competitors and join in the wonderful atmosphere that is a spring carnival! The Restawhile coffee van will be at the event from 7.30-11am. Please join us for this auspicious occasion to conclude the busy term.

In term four we will have a School Development Day on Monday the 30th of November where staff will be

working on analysing data from the school year. Students will not attend school that day.

We are now taking enrolments for 2021. If your child turns 4 before 30 June 2021 you can now enrol

them in Kindergarten. Mrs Bond is preparing a Kindergarten Orientation program for term four which is

very exciting. With three sessions, there will be time for your child to get an exciting taste of school while

you meet with service providers and teaching staff. At these sessions you will hear about what we can do

to support your child at school and what you can do to help prepare them. Please see the front office for

enrolment forms and we will provide further information about the orientation days closer to the time.

The staffing process for 2021 has begun with analysis of possible student numbers for 2021, therefore

possible budget and staff requirements and current staff allocations. Please ensure you have informed

the school of your intentions for 2021. It is essential to have a clear picture of enrolments to assist strong

planning.

Recently we have had cause to ring the shire several times regarding stray dogs on school grounds and at

events. Our request is to please ensure your dogs are correctly chained or restrained and do not come

onto school grounds.

Week one of term four will be our bi-annual National School Opinion Survey (NSOS) time. You will

receive information regarding the survey through our regular channels and you will have a week to

complete and return the survey. We very much appreciate your engagement with the survey and we aim

to have a stronger return rate than 2018.

STEM - Ocean Theme Day

Last Thursday QDHS participated in a whole school Science/STEM day, where the children were placed in mixed groups across the school and participated in some innovative activities where they had to use their 21st Century skills to solve ocean themed problems. In the K-2 rooms we had an oil spill and polluted waters where the children where challenged to clean up the water using a variety of different methods. They soon found out that some spills are irreversible. They also experimented with the density of water using an egg and salty water, they now know why we float so well in the ocean! In the upper grades we had a plethora of activities from building aquariums in Minecraft, making preventable shark shields, looking at sand erosion on beaches and ‘to float or not to float’ - neutral buoyancy. At the end of the day each group presented a showcase item to parents showing what we’d learnt. It was just amazing, the children not only expanded their wealth of knowledge and vocabulary but also used creativity and many different problem solving skills. A huge thank you to all the AMAZING teachers and EA's who created the fabulous activities and helped out on the day. We sure do have a great team at QDHS. Mrs Kelsie Squiers—STEM Coordinator
