Did you know, if you spin a ball while it is falling, it will fly? Why do screwdrivers come in different lengths and thicknesses? These and many other questions will be investigated by the High School Science students in Term 1. The study of Physics is all about how and why things occur in the universe. The Year 10 students are exploring the impact of speeding on reaction times when driving a car. The Year 9 students are investigating how sonar depth sounders work and looking into the importance of wearing ear protection when working with loud noises. The Year 8 students are learning about energy in its different forms all around us. They will be designing an energy efficient house suitable for building in Quairading. The Year 7 students will consider the effect of forces on machines and then apply this knowledge to designing robotic systems using the LEGO Mindstorms kits.

NEWS FROM MRS GARRETT IN HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE

Have you ever wondered, why a cat always falls on its feet? Did you know, if you spin a ball while it is falling, it will fly? Why do screwdrivers come in different lengths and thicknesses? These and many other questions will be investigated by the High School Science students in Term 1. The study of Physics is all about how and why things occur in the universe. YEAR 7 AND 8 IMMUNISATION PROGRAM The Department of Health is offering a free immunisation program for years 7 and 8 students. The program offers booster dose of diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough (dTpa) vaccine for protection against human papillomavirus (HPV). The HPV vaccine provides wide protection against genital warts and some cancers in two doses. Students in years 7 and 8 will have received an information pack containing details of the program and a consent form for parents to sign. Parents must sign and return the consent form for their children to participate in this free program. For more information visit www.healthywa.wa.gov.au/immunisation

YEAR 10 IMMUNISATION PROGRAM The Department of Health is offering a free, one does, meningococcal ACWY immunisation program for year 10 students. Students in year 10 will have also received an information pack containing details of the program and a consent form for parents to sign. Year 7, 8 and 10 Immunisation at QDHS — 2nd April 2019

PARENT VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED The Faction Swimming Carnival is on the 1st March and we require timekeepers. We also require some helpers to help set up at 7.30am on the day. If you are able to assist with either of these jobs please phone Carolyn or Abby at the office. Thank you.

SHEEP MANURE If you have any spare sheep manure the Kindergarten/Pre-Primary class would like some for their vegetable garden. Thank you.

2019 SCHOOL CONTRIBUTIONS AND CHARGES Kindergarten - $40 Primary - $50 Secondary - $235

SECONDARY ASSISTANCE SCHEME GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS

The Western Australian Department of Education provides an allowance to assist eligible families with secondary schooling costs. To be eligible for the allowance the parent/guardian must hold a Department of Human Services (Centrelink) or Veterans’ Affairs card that represents a statement of income for the family. The allowance consists of two components: $115 clothing Allowance paid directly to the parent/guardian or the school. $235 Educational Program Allowance paid directly to the school. Application is made by the parent or guardian for student/s enrolled in Years 7—12 studying a full time secondary course at a WA Public School. Applications close 12th April 2019. Please call into the front office for the application form.

JUNIOR SWIMMING CARNIVAL P - Year 2

1st March 2019 9am - 10.30am

Students please meet your teachers at the pool at 8.45am Students returning to school will walk back at 10.30am or go home with parents as indicated on their permission slip.

FACTION SWIMMING CARNIVAL Year 3-10

1st March 2019 10.30am

Students to come to school as per normal and then will walk with their teachers to the pool. Students will walk back with their teachers at the conclusion of the carnival or go home with their parents/carers as indicated on their permission slip.

SCHOOL PHOTO DAY

Our School Photos will be taken on Tuesday 19th March 2019.

Please note we are using a different company this year.

Every Student will have their photo taken, whether they are purchasing photos or not. The school has chosen to use the online ordering system. Your child will be given an online

ordering instruction slip and a unique student shootkey. Log onto www.msp.com.au and follow the prompts to place your order. For those parents unable to do online ordering we have a envelope at the office. If you lose your shootkey the school office will have a copy to quote back to you. The expiry date for online ordering is the 25th March 2019. Any orders received after this date will

incur a $30 archive fee. You can email your order request through to [email protected] or call our office on 9240 8000.

Family photo envelopes can be obtained from the office. Please ensure that your family envelope and payment is handed to the photographers on photo

day. If you do not have the correct money we will provide any change when photos are

delivered to school. Family photos cannot be ordered online. If you child is in a Student Council/Faction Captain photo you will receive a link and

password to the online gallery after photo day. You can view and order if required. Photos will be delivered with the school’s bulk order.

Please note: class groups, individuals and family photos are not available to view online.

RUBIC CUBES WANTED

Does anyone have any old Rubic Cubes? If so the high school maths class would love to have them. Please drop off to the front office of the school. Thank you.

COMMUNITY NOTICES ARE YOU INTERESTED IN SHEEP?: The WA Sheep Expo is working towards planning an exciting program for participants aged 12 to 23 years with a 3 day interactive program, showcasing knowledge from reputable sheep professionals, the opportunities the industry offers and to encourage the next generation to engage within the industry. The WA Sheep Expo will be held over three days during the first week of the July school holidays (8th to 10th July 2019), at the Wagin Showgrounds and is designed for high school aged participants, tertiary students and young agricultural professionals. Participants will participating in sheep handling and judging competitions in age groups to maximise learning and earn incentives at the conclusion of the event. We will be representing both the wool and meat sectors of the industry, and will have some highly reputable industry specialists covering programs such as; technology, breeding, marketing, handling and judging. SAVE THE DATE: Tuesday 19th March from 3pm - 6pm. The Quairading CRC will be hosting an official Bike Week event and would love to meet families and kids in the Nature Reserve car park for a spot of Bike Ed before exploring the trails on a nature inspired scavenger hunt. Register with the Quairading CRC on 9645 0096 or [email protected] ROTARY YOUTH EXCHANGE (RYE): want to have the ‘best year of your life’? How about a year of study and living overseas. Rotary Youth Exchange is for 15-18 year old students. It is a safe way to experience living in other countries. You will be hosted by families overseas for 12 months, attend school and make life-long friends. Similarly, the students who come to WA on exchange, live with families here, who usually say it’s been a wonderful experience having an overseas student as part of their family, which results in friendships which last a life time.
