The winning team
developed an
autonomous system for
transporting elderly
patients and residents at
nursing homes and
extended-care facilities.
This was the first hackathon in Asia focused
on social use of robotics for eldercare. The
event was organised by SGInnovate over the
past weekend, from February 10 - 12, 2017.
It called upon developers, clinicians,
engineers, designers, researchers and
business managers to build software and
hardware applications on the Segway Robot
platform. The Segway Robot is an open platform project.
autonomous mobility for healthcare
The system utilises facial recognition algorithms to identify patients, then connects with their wheelchair using a custom-designed electromagnetic coupling, allowing the robot, Loomo to move wheelchair-bound patients to and from activities such as meals and medical appointments. This also frees up manpower, enabling caregivers to focus on more critical care and medical tasks and provide higher quality care.

Called Robocoach, it is a robot that uses motion-sensor technology to ensure its elderly students do their exercise routines correctly.
Originally developed by students from Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Robocoach is already available at the Lions Befrienders seniors' activity centre in Mei Ling Street. The Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) hopes to roll it out to five seniors' activity centres by the end of the year. Twenty other centres will get an elderly-friendly tablet or NeuroAtHome, a device that uses motion-sensor-activated exercises to provide physical and cognitive therapy to seniors who have suffered strokes or have disorders suchas Alzheimer's or Parkinson's.

How can we provide quality care to address this array of needs? Many experts think an answer could be robots.Nadine is being developed by a team led by Prof Nadia Thalmann. They have been working on virtual human research for years; Nadine has existed for three."She has human-like capacity to recognise people, emotions, and at the same time to remember them," says Prof Thalmann.Nadine will automatically adapt to the person and situation she deals with, making her ideally suited to looking after the elderly, Prof Thalmann says. The robot can monitor a patient's wellbeing, call for help in an emergency, chat, read stories or play games. "The humanoid is never tired or bored," says Prof Thalmann. "It will just do what it is dedicated for."Nadine isn't perfect, though. She has trouble understanding accents, and her hand co-ordination isn't the best. But Prof Thalmann says robots could be caring for the elderly within 10 years.

SINGAPORE - It is a Friday afternoon and Mr Chin Tian Loke, 72, is watching a video on an iPad Air in his five-room flat in Jurong West. He mimics the movements of the person on screen, lifting his arm, which has a sensor attached to it at a 90-degree angle. A voice from the iPad then congratulates him: "Spectacular!"
It appears as though Mr Chin, a retired odd-job worker, is playing a game. But he is actually undergoing rehabilitation therapy, to help him gain strength in his limbs after he fell and broke his spinal tail bone in November last year.
Under a nationwide pilot of tele-rehabilitation involving 14 institutions, this option will be rolled out by the Integrated Health Information Systems (IHiS), the IT arm of the Ministry of Health.NTUC Health and TOUCH Home Care have already implemented such sessions while various hospitals as well as SPD, an organisation that helps those with physical disabilities, will do so by the end of the year.
