FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENTENTRANCE ANTIPHON

Drop down dew from above, you heavens, and let the clouds rain down the Just One; let the earth be opened and bring forth a Savior.

COLLECTPour forth, we beseech you, O Lord, your grace into our hearts, that we, to whom the Incarnation of Christ your Son was made known by the message of an Angel, may by his Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of his Resurrection. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

OLD TESTAMENT | 2 Samuel 7:1-5, 8B-12, 14a, 16When King David was settled in his palace, and the LORD had given him rest from his enemies on every side, he said to Nathan the prophet, “Here I am living in a house of cedar, while the ark of God dwells in a tent!”Nathan answered the king, “Go, do whatever you have in mind, for the LORD is with you.” But that night the LORD spoke to Nathan and said: “Go, tell my servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD: Should you build me a house to dwell in?’“

“’It was I who took you from the pasture and from the care of the flock to be commander of my people Israel. I have been with you wherever you went, and I have destroyed all your enemies before you. And I will make you famous like the great ones of the earth. I will fix a place for my people Israel; I will plant them so that they may dwell in their place without further disturbance.Neither shall the wicked continue to afflict them as they did of old, since the time I first appointed judges over my people Israel. I will give you rest from all your enemies. The LORD also reveals to you that he will establish a house for you. And when your time comes and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your heir after you, sprung from your loins, and I will make his kingdom firm. I will be a father to him, and he shall be a son to me. Your house and your kingdom shall endure forever before me; your throne shall stand firm forever.’”

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

R. For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord.

The promises of the LORD I will sing forever;through all generations my mouth shall proclaim your faithfulness. For you have said, “My kindness is established forever”; in heaven you have confirmed your faithfulness. R.

“I have made a covenant with my chosen one,I have sworn to David my servant:Forever will I confirm your posterityand establish your throne for all generations.” R.

“He shall say of me, ‘You are my father,my God, the Rock, my savior.’Forever I will maintain my kindness toward him,and my covenant with him stands firm.” R.

EPISTLE | Romans 16:25-27Brothers and sisters: To him who can strengthen you, according to my gospel and the proclamation of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery kept secret for long ages but now manifested through the prophetic writings and, according to the command of the eternal God, made known to all nations to bring about the obedience of faith, to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ be glory forever and ever. Amen.

The Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.May it be done to me according to your word. Alleluia!

GOSPEL | Luke 1:26-38The angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary. And coming to her, he said, “Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you.” But she was greatly troubled at what

was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.

“Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” But Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?” And the angel said to her in reply, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren; for nothing will be impossible for God.” Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.

The Gospel of the Lord.Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

COMMUNION ANTIPHONBehold, a Virgin shall conceive and bear a son; and his name will be called Emmanuel.

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNIONHaving received this pledge of eternal redemption, we pray, almighty God, that, as the feast day of our salvation draws ever nearer, so we may press forward all the more eagerly to the worthy celebration of the mystery of your Son’s Nativity. Who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.

BEYOND THE HOMILYfather john david matherne

Against storms & hurricanes

Father, all the elements of nature obeys your command. Calm the storms and

hurricanes that threaten us and turn our fear of your power into praise of your

goodness. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives, and

reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

suscipe | Surrender Prayer

Take, Lord, and receive all my liberty, my memory, my understanding, and my

entire will, all I have and call my own. You have given all to me. To you, Lord, I return

it. Everything is yours; do with it what you will. Give me only your love and your

grace, that is enough for me.Amen.

Prayer for Liturgical Renewal

Lord Jesus Christ, Eternal High Priest, bestow upon your Church the spirit of piety. Reveal to her, through the gift of your Sacred Liturgy, the depth of your love for her, the joy of the Gospel, and

the hope of heaven.

Grant to us, especially in the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux, the eyes of faith,

that we might peer through the veil of Heaven as we pray the Sacred Liturgy and, being enraptured by Divine Love,

go forth to our neighbor with fraternal charity. Who lives and reigns with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God forever and ever. Amen.

St. John Chrysostom, pray for us.St. Catherine of Siena, pray for us.

Romano Guardini, pray for us.

Prayer of Saint Francis

Lord, make me a channel of thy peace, that where there is hatred, I may bring love; that where there is wrong, I may bring the spirit of forgiveness; that where there is discord, I may bring harmony; that where there is error, I may bring truth; that where there is doubt, I may bring faith; that where there is despair, I may bring hope;that where there are shadows, I may bring light; that where there is sadness, I may bring joy. Lord, grant that I may seek rather to comfort than to be comforted; to understand, than to be understood; to love, than to be loved. For it is by self-forgetting that one finds. It is by forgiving that one is forgiven. It is by dying that one awakens to Eternal Life.Amen.

We are looking forward with great anticipation to the culmination of this Advent season with this week’s celebrations of Christmas. I pray that you have had a blessed Advent season to this point. Maybe it has been a spiritually enriching time of refocusing on your relationship with God. Maybe you have come back to the Mass for the first time in months since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic or since before then. Maybe you have been embraced by the mercy of God in the sacrament of confession for the first time in a while. Maybe you have made a serious attempt to devote intentional time to prayer and reflection with our Lord. Maybe none of these have been your experience of Advent to this point with the trials and burdens of 2020 not ceasing. Regardless of where you are coming into the week of Christmas, there is still work that God wants to do in your heart now.

Advent is a season of hope that continually reminds us that God is intimately engaged in our lives. It is a season of promise that we come to rely on the promise of God, that he would send the Messiah to save humanity from its fallen, sinful state and give us hope for eternal life. I think Advent this year holds new meaning as our normal way of life is still being interrupted, as we my be feeling unsettled in our holiday plans and traditions, or as we may just be tired a need rest. This Advent—and especially these final days—serve for us as a reminder of how we are meant to live our lives, in ongoing anticipation of the coming of the Lord.

The best way for any of us to receive the Lord at His coming requires us to prepare and be open. So is there space prepared and ready to receive Him in you life? Are other things cluttering the space or have you let go of things that are less important? Is there some sin that has tainted the space where the Lord belongs? This week we will host our final Mercy Night of the Advent season, so if you have not been to confession in some time or are looking for a moment to pray in a peaceful space, this is a perfect opportunity for you.

Receiving our Lord at Christmas is the culmination of all this preparation, and we receive Him in sacrament at the Mass. Our Mass schedule for Christmas will be the same as last year. For our 4 pm Vigil Mass, we are planning on having it outside in the yard near the prayer garden. This is to help accommodate as many people as possible for the celebration as possible. Please being your own chairs if you decide to attend. Masks and social distancing will be mandatory as well. I want to encourage anyone that is able to come for that mass to make effort to do so. Obviously, this will be the plan weather permitting, but if you can be in the cold, it will be a big help for us to have you at this mass as to take pressure off of the other masses we are celebrating in church. We will be live-streaming one of the masses as well for anyone unable or unwilling to expose themselves to larger crowds.

Thanks you for your faith, for your understanding, and for your commitment to the Lord and our parish. Pax,
