Experience ThisConsumer trend reports are not something I pay attention to on a daily basis; however, an article I was reading in USA TODAY caught my eye. It reported that consumer trends for the past year indicate a shift away from buying things to investing in experiences.
Apparently, people want more for their hard-earned disposable income than online experiences and the instant gratification of
buying clothes and electronics. The article said spending on air travel hit record high levels last year. Once-in-a-lifetime experiences that create long-lasting memories are what consumers want. And to take this trend one step further, people are searching for experi-ences that stimulate their minds and inspire their creativity.
With this trend in mind, we are well positioned for the future with our focus on experiential educational programs in unforgettable locations. If you want to step out of your comfort zone, expand your craft and technique, enrich your creative spirit, and explore cool places, spend this fall with The Workshops. We are offering once-in-a-lifetime adventures to Mexico, Cuba, and Japan as well as our programs in breathtaking Santa Fe, New Mexico. And to whet your appetite a bit more, take a look at our newest venture on page 23— Santa Fe Writers Lab.
Join us for an experience that will change your life.
All my best wishes,
REID CALLANAN, Director, Santa Fe Photographic Workshops

Fall is beautiful everywhere, but at 7,000 feet it becomes absolutely stunning. Locals often say autumn is their favorite season, and here just are a few reasons why.
For these reasons and innumerable others, fall is Santa Fe’s worst-kept secret. Come see for yourself, but be forewarned:
ONCE YOU GET A TASTE OF AUTUMN IN SANTA FE YOU MAY NEVER WANT TO LEAVE!
Nearby Festivals and Celebrations
Also in fall, there’s a plethora of annual events in and around Santa Fe: Santa Fe Wine and Chile Fiesta in September, Albuquerque’s famed Balloon Fiesta in October, the Bosque del Apache Festival of the Cranes in Novem-ber, and Native American Tribal Feast Days throughout the season.
A Bountiful Harvest
Northern New Mexico’s thriving agricultural community really shines in the autumn. The Santa Fe Farmer’s Market is positively boom-ing and local farm-to-table restaurants take full advantage of the seasonal abundance. A few of our favorites include:

Smaller Crowds and a Huge Burning Puppet
That’s right, as soon as the summer crowds leave, we Santa Feans get together and burn a 50-foot marionette. Zozobra—as it’s called—is a ritual to chase away the doom and gloom of the previous year, and we’ve been doing it since 1926.
Hiking and Biking Perfection
Santa Fe may be known for arts and culture, but our outdoor spaces are equally superb. Santa Fe is a hiking and biking paradise year-round, but it gets even better in autumn, when the weather is absolutely flawless. The sum-mer monsoons have abated, the air is cooler and, of course, the aspens are spectacular.

Since 1990, over 20,000 amateur and professional photographers have traveled to the inspiring high-desert environs of the world-renowned Santa Fe Photographic Workshops to follow their passion for image-making.
Beginning in 2017, Santa Fe Workshops expands our experiential educational offerings with the introduction of our new Writers Lab, a community of storytellers from all walks of life, professions, and disciplines that gather in the mountains of New Mexico and the ever-changing island of Cuba to live the writer’s life.
The Writers Lab programs launch in Cuba in January. Workshops in Santa Fe will follow in May.

TRAVEL TO CUBA IS VISUALLY STIMULATING, CULTURALLY REWARDING, AND STILL VERY COMPLEX. Immerse yourself in the magic of Cuba and fully
engage your photographic vision as you capture the exquisite island light, the
incredible colors and textures, and the warm and welcoming smiles of the Cuban
people. Our years of experience handling the logistics offer you unparalleled
access as you explore Cuba on one of our meticulously planned journeys.“
“My experience in Cuba with Santa Fe Workshops far exceeded my expectations. The interactions with Cuban people and the local environment were extremely rewarding and so unique. The Cuban photographers were phenomenal and so helpful in every way —with photography, culture, access, everything.
– LAURA WARD, past Cuba Program participant
After five years, and having taken over 1,000 photographers to Cuba, Santa Fe Photographic Workshops is a seasoned leader in overcoming the language barriers and navigating the com-plexities of traveling in this communist country. Kip Brundage, Director of Cuba Programs for Santa Fe Photographic Workshops, and our team of Havana-based Cuban photographers provide their expert knowledge of the country and guide you behind the tourist veil.
From Havana to the Oriente, our programs are led by world-renowned photographers who share their photographic knowledge and provide enthusiastic support. Our small group sizes of not more than 15 travelers encourage authentic, compelling educational and photographic visits to the well-planned events and locations that we have unique access to.
In alliance with Cuba’s premier photographic organization, Fototeca de Cuba, and its director, Nelson Ramírez, our unique programs allow U.S. participants to learn about Cuba’s long and colorful history and engage directly with Cubans from all walks of life.
Now truly is the time to experience the ever-changing enigma known as Cuba. You’ll discover that Cuba represents not just another travel opportunity, but the chance to become richer in thought, spirit, and vision, both as a person and as a photographer.True to the requirements of a people-to-people General License with the U.S. Treasury Department, our programs in Cuba focus on educational exchanges with the Cuban people and recording their amazing lives with our cameras.
