Introduction

“”

STYLE is a tool… to compete in life outside the home. People like you better, without knowing why,

because people always react well to a person they like the look of.

- Mary Quant

SANKARAThe term "Sankara" has roots in Asian, Indian, and African languages, and generally translates to "introspection", and "creator". A brand that embodies multiculturalism, Sankara ambitiously combines elements of fashion aesthetics, modern art, traditional and pop culture in a bold way that makes you reconnect with your inner self in an expression of individuality - as though through actual introspection.

In doing this, you recreate yourself, making those around you perceive you in the light you wish to be perceived in. Since everyone makes a statement by being dressed, we like to think we provide you with a fashion statement that says "I'm outstanding".

Collection

The inspiration for The First Family Collection comes from the historic evidence pointing to the fact that the first humans (and human family) lived in the eastern part of the African continent. The collection consists of seven "pairs" of leather bags, designed with simple elegant lines, hidden fittings, and all featuring a premium fabric inner lining. Different designs of this fabric are used in any one bag, meaning that no two bags are exactly alike - a design concept that echoes the fact that no two people (not even identical twins) are exactly the same.

These pairs, although composed of one male and one female bag, are subtly androgynous, and so can be worn by either gender. Each of the bags are given the same names which are sometimes given to boys and girls born on a particular days of the week in parts of Western Africa.

The simplicity of the designs represents both the simplicity of life during the earlier times, and the simplicity of life we strive to attain in modern times. It has been noted that "the first family" could also have the dual meaning of "the family of the head of state", adding a classy, trendy, slightly professional dimension to the look and feel of the family of bags.

all too often the form of a design does not match its supposed intellectual content: the ‘essence’ or message of the piece. Exciting new label Sankara achieves this elusive harmony in a way that is intuitive and unpretentious so as to be almost low-key.

Despite the simplicity of the bags themselves – a punchy, appealing colour, clean shapes that won’t go out of style, smart cuts (perfect for business as well as society) – this aspect of internality is evoked in a nuanced and intelligent manner, perhaps best expressed by the lining. The tasteful, practical, unisex feel of the bags is offset by a discrete yet vivid lining visible from ‘peepholes’ in the front of each bag; the pattern hints at the label’s African influences without imposing an identity on the holder. Instead, the way that the lining peeks out from the inside of the bag to the outside world perfectly represents the ‘Sankara’ concept: a dash of individual flair, of style, in a tastefully constructed skin.

This is exactly the balance that fashion strives for: the sense that bothintellectual values and the individual are strongly and uniquely contained together within an understated and socially suitable product. Many new labels spring up in today’s entrepreneurially spirited market, often with clear signs of talent and bright ideas on board. However, the clear understanding of minimalism, unity, and ethos evident in ‘Kwame’ and ‘Ama’ shows greater promise: I now have high expectations of Sankara, as well as good hopes of seeing them met. These bags, where taste and style are both present, feel as if they are on a team, and would merit purchase together. I look forward to discovering how we each find ourselves expressed through its peeking peephole.

Who We Are

In the beginning, there was only an idea; a concept built on the belief that one should strive to continuously recreate him or herself in order to stay creative, andin order to stand out from the crowd as a unique individual. It was sparked during a phone call Kara-Maxwell had with his longtime friend, Opokua Amoabeng. She joked that he should name his line of accessories "Sankara", as it was close enough to his name, but sounded more like a brand name, one that would stand out in the fashion world.

It could've been a coincidence, but Kara-Maxwell soon found the only definitions of the term to be "introspection" and "creator" - two words which fit perfectly with his idea of redefining oneself. In the efforts of finding themselves and developing their uniqueness, people tend to recreate themselves (from within) through introspection, so Sankara would be a brand that aimed to assist this process by enhancing the outward appearance to match one's identity.

Soon, Kara-Maxwell was ready to create Sankara. Knowing he couldn't do it alone, he recruited two of his most talented and reliable friends, Kwame Agyei and Julie Mourchidi, to join him in the adventure, and before long the three breathed life into the label.

OUR STORY

Kara-Maxwell Ntumy is the creative director behind the Sankara fashion label, and ever since he picked up his crayons to sketch his favourite cartoon characters as a child he has always found great pleasure in art and design. "KN" as he is more commonly known, has always drawn his inspiration from the life experiences and surroundings gathered from living in seven countries, to date. An African raised in Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea, KN was exposed to elements of different cultures; stories, music, artefacts, and traditional dress were important factors which combined to create a rich life. Attending international schools throughout his formal education only added to his keen sense and appreciation of multiculturalism.

Although this is Kara's first foray into fashion, he has worked on numerous notable web and multimedia design projects, the most prominent being the graphic design for the branding of the annual USIU Pageant. It is the cumulation of his experience from working on such projects, coupled with his deep passion for fashion, that developed his eye for design and eventually led him to create Sankara.
