recision, excellence, quality and cost; all form an integral part of manufacturing and we have passed the age where we could put weightage or attach importance to each of these aspects depending upon their criticality, as each is critical and unalterable. Manufacturing is all about tools and technology, the tech-edge is the single-most decisive factor that helps the manufacturer rule the market by providing faster, cheaper, better and efficient machining options for that end customer who is getting more and more demanding as we go ahead in time.

With this as a backgrounder and given the prevailing market conditions that we live in, there is another reality that completes the quorum, not only from the standpoint of this Special Edition, but also from the competitive spirit and standards that it has achieved for others to get inspired and follow this leader. Vibrant Machining, as the name suggests, is all about the machine tools excellence that Gujarat boasts of and how it provides a tech-edge to the already flourishing manufacturing base in the state.

As per Indian Machine Tool Manufacturers’ Association (IMTMA), traditionally seen as a region for manufacturing conventional products, the machine tools industry in Gujarat has undergone a substantial transformation in the last five years. Manufacturers in the Gujarat region, particularly small and medium technocrat entrepreneurs from Rajkot, are presently manufacturing the latest range of highly competitive customised solutions.

No wonder then that during the financial year 2010-11, the Gujarat machine tools industry achieved the target of `800 crore turnover, posting a growth of 30 per cent. Now, the industry is targeting a turnover of `1,200 crore within the next two years. Presently, Rajkot, Surendranagar and Ahmedabad are the major machine tools hubs in Gujarat. Apart from that, Sanand is also fast catching up due to investments and new projects that it has attracted.

As an expert points out, a critical reason behind the growth of the machine tools industry has been the economical growth that has happened in the last 20 years. As the manufacturing sector grew, the machine tools industry also prospered. Rajkot, as a machine tools hub, has been manufacturing machine tools since the 1950s. The raw material that was required by the machine tools industry, i.e. casting, was easily available as foundry has been the biggest cluster in Gujarat. Thus, 80 per cent of the need for raw material was fulfilled from the same place, which was another reason behind the development of the machine tools industry here.

As you will read in detail in this edition, today, Rajkot houses around 200 machine tools manufacturing units. Order books have grown by about 100 per cent and works of `1,400 crore are on hand. Nearly 100 new manufacturing units have also come up in the region. As of now, Rajkot itself houses above 400 machine tools players, of which 95 per cent units produce and supply conventional machine tools across India. According to industry sources, since the last few years, the share of local consumption of tools has increased from 10 to 20 per cent given the growth in auto parts, foundry and engineering industries.

This dossier is an ode to the excellence in machining along with the entrepreneurial spirit that has inspired us to dedicate this edition to the machine tools industry in Gujarat. Our interactions with the machine tools community in Gujarat further cemented our belief that all the inspirational stories from this land of prosperity need to be shared with the world. Here’s sharing the insights and inspirations!

ujarat, one of the most preferred investment destinations globally, provides lucrative, yet innovative, opportunities

in almost all the industrial sectors. Riding on the inspirational support given by the State Government since the last decade, the industrial landscape of the state has grown greener by the day. Entrepreneurship, strong leadership and apt planning implemented at each level of the hierarchy have made the government machinery and the industrial environment competent and competitive. Today, development is a mass movement in Gujarat. This development, coupled with huge investments in the automobile industry by big players like Tata Motors, Maruti Suzuki, AMW, Atul Auto, Ford and Peugeot has created robust demand for the prospering machine tools industry in Gujarat. Maulik Patel, Executive Director – Techno-Commercial, Sahajanand Laser Technology, articulates, “Because of the Vibrant Gujarat Summits, many MoUs have been signed with companies based in Gujarat. The demand has been majorly driven by the solar and automobile industries. Tata Motors was the first core automobile entrant in Gujarat. The company’s entry into the state has given a big boost to the machine tools industry here. As these companies start investing in Gujarat, allied tier I & II suppliers, who cater to the growing demand from the core companies, have also come up. Business for SMEs & MSMEs is definitely on an upward swing.”

technocrat entrepreneurs from Rajkot, are presently manufacturing the latest range of highly competitive customised solutions.

A GROUP DEVELOPMENT EFFORT The manufacturing abilities of SMEs in Gujarat have now been established through a slew of initiatives taken by local manufacturers, with support and assistance from the Government of India, United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), and IMTMA. Associations like Rajkot Machine Tools Manufacturers Association (RMTMA), Engineering Association of Rajkot, etc., are serving as a catalyst to boost the morale of SMEs through various tangible and intangible efforts.

Gujarat’s Industrial Policy also demarcates schemes for the benefit of existing and new industries. These schemes include interest subsidy of seven per cent for micro enterprises and five per cent for SMEs for setting up a new unit or expansion/ diversification/modernisation in an existing unit. One per cent additional interest subsidy is offered to youth below 35 years for their first project. Also, venture capital assistance is given to promote venture capital funding for MSMEs, adopting innovative technologies. Some of the other assistance given by the state include assistance in quality certification & technology acquisition fund; support to R&D institutions; patent assistance; benefits of energy & water conservation; support for market & vendor development; support to auxiliary industries for value addition and rehabilitation of sick units, among others.

Based on the above support mechanism, the machine tools industry is Gujarat has now taken the lead to spruce up its productivity and focus on imbibing new concepts to join the mainstream. CNC machines technology, which was almost alien to this region, has now become the primary focus of the Rajkot machine

tools manufacturers. Realising the potential of some of the key segments in the manufacturing industry like infrastructure and automobile, several machine tools players in Gujarat are today making low-cost CNC machines for specific user requirements. These initiatives in Gujarat have been successfully harnessed under the aegis of the National Programme for Development of the Indian Machine Tools Industry (NPDMI). The national programme has achieved significant results in terms of enhancement of exports, turnover in production of CNC machines, introduction of new machining concepts and facilitation of machine tool clusters in several regions. Elaborating on these developing regions, Arvind Pitroda, Partner, Pitroda Utility Industries, points out, “Presently, Rajkot, Surendranagar and Ahmedabad are the major machine tools hubs in Gujarat. Apart from that, Sanand is also fast catching up owing to investments from Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors.”

CHARTING THE GROWTH CURVEBut how has this state been able to realise the huge potential in this technology-driven machine tools industry? Rupesh Mehta, President, Macpower CNC, elaborates, “A critical reason behind the growth of the machine tools industry has been the economical growth that has taken place over the last 20 years. As the manufacturing sector grew, the machine tools industry also prospered. Rajkot, as a machine tools hub, has been manufacturing machine tools since the 1950s. The raw material that was required by the machine tools industry, i.e., casting, was easily available as foundry has been the biggest cluster in Gujarat. Thus, 80 per cent of the need for raw material was fulfilled from the same place, which was another reason behind the development of the machine tools industry here.” He adds, “During the last decade, many engineering colleges have also come up in Rajkot, which

have provided technical strength to the clusters existing here. Another aspect to this growth story is that second generation young and aptly trained engineer businessmen have entered the market. They have led to the shift from conventional to hi-end machinery, automation and product upgradation.”

Today, Rajkot houses around 200 machine tools manufacturing units. Order books have grown by about 100 per cent and works of ̀ 1,400 crore is on hand.

Commenting on the growth of Rajkot as a machine tools hub, Paras Vaghela, Director – Sales, Godson Bending Systems, avers, “In Rajkot, we have many manufacturers who manufacture both CNC as well as the conventional machinery. Presently, both the machines have equal demand. In fact, Rajkot has grown over the years because of the demand for conventional machinery. Today, 80 per cent of the machinery manufactured is conventional. Only 20 per cent are manufacturing CNC and PLC machines, including Godson.” Highlighting on the factors behind the surge in the machine tools market, Vaghela adds, “The presence of many SSIs and the growth of some of these SSI units into SMEs has supported the machine tools industry in Rajkot. SMEs today are getting many benefits from financial institutes as well as government machinery. A few SSI units are expected to make it big in this market. Thus, the engineering ecosystem will keep on growing in the coming years.”

SETTING NEW BENCHMARKSRiding on huge market demands, during the financial year 2010-11, the Gujarat machine tools industry achieved the target of `800 crore turnover, posting a growth of 30 per cent. Now, the industry is targeting a turnover of `1,200 crore within the next two years. According to Mehta, this can be achieved by drafting an export-oriented strategy and expanding the reach of the industry, locally.

Presently, the machine tools market is witnessing huge demand for special purpose machines, cutting tools, power tools and hydraulic compressors in the overseas market and the demand is likely to gain momentum over the next three years. Additionally, the share of local consumption of tools has also increased from 10 to 20 per cent, given the growth in auto parts, foundry and engineering industries in the country. The Rajkot auto ancillary industry is also growing by 35 per cent per annum.

DEFINING NEW GROWTH HORIZONS As the machine tools industry in Gujarat braces on investment, capacity addition and the technology front, there are many initiatives that are being taken by the government. Elaborating on a recent development, Mehta informs, “Through IMTMA, Planning Commission & the Ministry of Heavy Industries, a proposal has been finalised for the upcoming Budget. This proposal is for the formation of three Machine Tools Park in three zones – South (Bengaluru), West (Rajkot), and North. During this Budget, the funding for this project will be finalised. The key areas in this proposal are training, manpower development, soft loans, R&D centres and common facilities. The centre will be responsible for setting up R&D centres in this park. Due to all these initiatives, I believe that the industry will be able to suffice the demand for hi-end machines from the manufacturing sector in the next 10 years.” So what will be the shape

of the machine tools industry in the next five years?

Shashikant Mistry, CEO, Mistry Laxman Kadva Machines, asserts, “The Gujarat machine tools industry will grow at a phenomenal rate in the next five years. As compared to Maharashtra and Karnataka, the business spirit of Gujaratis will drive the growth of the machine tools industry and the state will reach the leadership position in time to come.”

Giving a futuristic outlook, PG Jadeja, Chairman & MD, Jyoti CNC Automation, says, “With the combination of quality orientation and adaptation of technology and automation, Gujarat can surely become a global hub for the machine tools industry. Gujarat’s industrial friendliness is known internationally and foreign players have no hesitation to explore the state for their machine tools needs.”

16 TRENDS & DEVELOPMENTS IN METAL FORMING SEARCH - Supplement April 2012

ver the last decade, the contribution of the manufacturing sector to India’s GDP has grown stronger and one of the

indirect industries that has spurred this growth momentum is metal forming. The industry plays a major role in the production of a diverse range of machine tools starting with large formed parts to high-precision components for various segments of manufacturing. The applications of metal forming are majorly driven by sectors such as automotive, aerospace, electronic appliances, general engineering, etc. It primarily involves a tool, usually called a die, that applies pressure on the metal so that it takes the shape determined by the shape and size of the die. Some

metals require heating to a specific temperature, which ensures smooth and easy change. While, in some cases, the shape and size of the metal can be achieved at cooler temperatures.

IMPORTANCE OF METAL FORMINGThe production of machine tools in India has jumped from `16,562 million in 2009-10 to `24158 million during 2010-11, registering an annual growth rate of around 46 per cent. The growth

has come in as a major boon towards the expansion of the metal forming industry in the country. Metal forming accounts for about 40 per cent of total machine tools consumption in India. “The metal forming industry is very important because a major chunk of products and components required for all major industries, such as automobile are from forming. They ensure that the ancillary products are developed according to the requirements,” says Ketan J Chotai, Director, Saral Group.

The production of metal forming systems touched `3,084 million during 2010-11 as compared to `2,643 million during 2009-10, thereby posting a growth of 17 per cent. While figures indicate that the industry is on an expansion mode; in reality, the metal

With major MNCs setting up their base in the Indian subcontinent, opportunities are rife for metal forming companies. This especially holds true for the state of Gujarat, which, by virtue of attractive OEMs, has been

providing a clear expansion ground to millions of machine tools companies. With more investments slated to come into the state, the metal forming industry in Gujarat is all set to grow by leaps & bounds.

forming machinery production in India accounts for less than one per cent of the total global production.

However, in a major push to the growth of the metal forming industry in the country, over a period of time, many companies are slowly showing their preference towards establishing their manufacturing and R&D hub in India or they are outsourcing their machine tools requirements to India. It is primarily because of reasons like cost competitiveness, availability of quality design and engineering capabilities at comparatively lower cost.

DEVELOPMENTS IN THE INDUSTRYThe metal forming segment has been witnessing various developments these days. In a bid offer cutting-edge solutions, Rockwell Automation has recently introduced automation solutions for the metal forming segment. It ensures reduction in cost, system development & installation time. It also increases system flexibility, operation & expandability. Besides this, it reduces downtime through alarms & diagnostic messages and reduces risk through the use of standard software modules and field proven designs. Automation major, Pepperl+Fuchs, also offers

advanced technology-based solution for the metal forming industry. “If the companies do not adopt automisation, survival will become very difficult for them in future,” highlights Chotai. Commenting on the initiatives taken to improve products’ quality, ER Pankaj Patel from Rajkot-based Milestones Machinery, says “We always use high-end technology to perform

thorough inspection and testing.” Further, to deliver quality products consistently, the company takes necessary steps in continuously improving the process to suit their customers’ needs.

One of the major trends witnessed in the industry has been the demand to develop machine tools in an energy-efficient manner, which lead to

lower emission levels in the manufacturing processes. This rise in demand for eco-friendly machine tools has spurred the growth in energy-efficient metal forming.

OPPORTUNITIES AMID CHALLENGES

One of the major challenges faced by the industry is the lack of skilled and experienced workers. Secondly, more than 70 per cent of the machine tools in the country are imported, which ultimately limits the scope of expansion of the Indian metal forming industry. Moreover, this segment currently faces tough and strong competition from countries like China, Taiwan, Brazil

and Turkey, among others. Chinese products are sometimes priced as low as 20 per cent as compared to the existing market rates. For high-end technology, countries like Germany, Spain, Italy and Japan continue to be the preferred choice.

Nonetheless, the metal forming segment has a bright future in the country. In the next few years, the segment is expected to become more competitive with major players expected to enter the market.

In a nutshell, Chotai aptly concludes that the metal forming industry will be one of the fastest growing industries in the country going forward. However, the Indian metal forming industry needs to ensure that as global competition intensifies in the coming years, India needs to address the challenges on how they can develop technologies and mechanisms in metal forming, which can enable them to deliver world-class products for the machine tools and, more importantly, at an affordable price.

[email protected]

The rising trend among companies to manufacture and procure products from cost-competitive nations, such as India, should come as a major boost for investor-friendly states, like Gujarat. The state’s investment-friendly policies have ensured that globally all the top manufacturing sectors, especially the automotive sector, establish their manufacturing base in the state. This has increased the scope of growth for metal forming industries in that region.Baroda, Rajkot and Surendranagar are the major locations where the machine tools industry of Gujarat is based. They are primarily expected to meet the rising demands. Automobile, electrical appliances, etc., are some of the common products where metal forming is widely used. Additionally, these industries have a strong presence in Gujarat. In some of the major developments, metal forming companies also expect improvement in incoming orders in the coming years with continued growth in the manufacturing sector. The outlook for the metal forming industry continues to be bright in Gujarat. Given the strong competition India is facing from countries like China, adopting automation-based solutions can make their product competitive. All the companies operating in the industry need to adopt automation-based technologies in metal forming, while some have done it, others need to implement it. Companies are coming with automation solutions exclusively for the industry. This will ensure that the rising demand is met along with effi ciency and repeatability. Further, the trend to adopt eco-friendly technologies in metal forming is also picking up among the metal forging solution providers.

TRENDS AND DEVELOPMENT OF METAL FORMING IN GUJARAT

20 COMPOSITES MACHINING SEARCH - Supplement April 2012

ith the advent of new materials and composites in the manufacturing sector, composite machining has opened up

a new door of opportunity for machine tools manufacturers.

A composite combines two metals with individual characteristics to create something with unique properties. With rapid growth in the manufacturing sector, the Indian composite industry is expected to grow at around 25 per cent in the next 4-5 years. The key drivers of this growth are automobile, infrastructure, wind energy, and oil & gas sectors in India. Rupesh Mehta, President, Macpower CNC, avers, “Composites are one of the most widely used materials because of their adaptability to different situations and the relative ease of combination with other materials to serve specific purposes and exhibit desirable properties. Normally, the strength-weight ratio of composites is higher than other materials.”

Presently, the Indian composite industry has a strong manufacturing base with automated processes combined with robust design and development skills. Global companies have entered India and established a strong base not only for local demand, but also for export as well. Several companies are investing in newer technologies to improve productivity and quality to meet the increasing demands of this growth market.

DEMAND CENTRES In the present automobile, aerospace and wind energy sector, weight reduction and improving fuel efficiency while arriving at high productivity & performance at lower cost remain the most significant issues. Thus, manufacturers and R&D experts are now looking at capabilities to develop new fibre reinforced materials that can help manufacturers address these

concerns. These materials would be of major help to aerospace companies. These have been thus, increasingly pressured to utilise more technically advanced manufacturing techniques. From a material perspective, carbon fibre-reinforced composites are strong yet lightweight, making it the choice material for companies such as Boeing and Airbus as well as Asian manufacturers, such as COMAC to adopt advanced, environmental-friendly technologies in large volume production. Commenting on the advent of composites in the aerospace sector, Mehta says, “On a civil aircraft, composite materials can now account

for as much as 20 per cent of the structural weight. This proportion is expected to keep on increasing as is the case with the A380. According to an Airbus study, the proportion of composite materials in aircraft structures should reach 35-50 per cent in military aircraft programmes.”

COMPOSITE MACHINING CHALLENGESMachining composite materials puts forth a completely new set of hurdles when compared to conventional machining of metals. In fact, working with one specific composite can often differ significantly from working with another. All these factors have

The need for low-cost manufacturing processes, higher productivity and robust performance through low input cost has driven the aerospace,

automobile & defence sectors to invest in advanced materials. The development of advanced ceramics, polymers, alumina, nanotechnology

forced machine tools manufacturers to produce parts that give high removal rate, increase accuracy & efficiency and provide longer tool life. When a new composite comes to the production floor, a shop pursuing process optimisation must be willing to seek out the tools that offer the best approach to machining.

Composites behave much differently than metals when they are machined. The ingredients of any composite can present contradictory machining demands, while any attempt to cut them poses the costly danger of damaging the part. Machine shops need to have the right equipment and skills in place to machine these parts effectively and many shops are rapidly developing these capabilities. Machine tool builders are constantly developing new tool geometrics and technologies and there are various tool geometries available to address the varied nature of composite materials. Hole quality, tool life, and tool cost all significantly impact overall productivity in composite machining.

Taking all the above facts under consideration, the cost of composite machining is on the higher side as compared to that of metals. Mehta elaborates, “At present, the new technology for machining composite material is not very cost effective, but R&D and tooling can help reduce the cost. Because of a volatile increase in application of such materials, all big manufacturers of machine and tooling in the world are performing R&D to reduce the cost of composite machining with increasing accuracy.”

With so much happening on the R&D front, companies have modified their manufacturing processes to cater to the needs of the market. Bhavin Parmar, Partner, Pinnacle Engineering Enterprise, explains, “We have upgraded our machinery for hard-to-machine materials. These upgrades include hydraulic power pack, granite casting, etc. We have modified our existing machinery so that bigger size

machine cartridge spindle could be assembled in-house. Thus, at present 90 per cent of the hard-to-machine jobs are taken care of in-house.”

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS Composites, unlike metals, are not isotropic and consist of both unique resins and fibres. Hence, drilling, cutting and machining composites in any post-processing operation to get to the final part shape/configuration, is indeed different. Mehta points out, “Machining is one of the basic operations necessary to cut things to size and finish off edges, dimensions and other aspects of a finished assembly part. Tool sharpness, right use of coolant for over heating, backup material, post-process cleaning, dust collection, electric motor protection, speed & feed of machine and tooling selection are all very important aspects that need to be looked at while dealing with composites.”

According to Mehta, for machining composite materials, machines should have high cutting speed to reduce the cutting force on soft material. Because of hi-speed machining, balancing of machine and structure design need more concentration. Also, special workholding with low clamping force, special dust collection and type of coolants are important choices for soft material machining. Also, selection of tooling affects the accuracy of machining. Even tool manufacturers have designed special tools for composite materials. As an example, for drilling, use of PCD cutters gives good results for contouring or surfacing operations, although it is necessary to have good control of the operating conditions, it also appears to be absolutely necessary to have good control over the radial and axial cutting angles in order to be able to reduce damage such as delaminating or peeling to machined surfaces.

MARKET PERFORMANCE Driven by strong economic growth and urbanisation across the emerging markets in the Asia Pacific region,

the demand for advanced composites materials is expected to continue growing at a rapid rate over the next five years. In 2010, global composites production expanded by nearly five per cent to reach eight million metric tonne with the Asia-Pacific region accounting for 38 per cent of the total production volume, driven mainly by unprecedented market growth in India and China. As per experts, the market demand for composite materials in the electrical & electronics, automotive, aviation and wind energy segments have been growing steadily in India. According to the annual survey of the composites market conducted by JEC, Asian production is projected to make up 43 per cent of the global composites manufacturing output by 2015.

Mehta highlights, “Previously, the market penetration of composites was over 10 times less than the global average due to several reasons, including import measures. Also, Indian manufacturers of such composites were importing machines for composite machining, but now such machines have been developed by Indian companies.”

Growth in the Indian composites market has picked up quite significantly over the past few years due to major demand from wind energy, Railways and marine industry. Annual composites growth rates are estimated to be between 18 and 20 per cent over the past three years, and this impressive growth is expected to continue. In 2011, the volume of the composites’ output reached around three per cent of the worldwide composites volume, which is also equivalent to about six per cent of the Asian volume. This surge in the growth rate, after a slump during the initial phase, is slated to reinvent the use of composites in the Indian manufacturing sector, creating a new, yet challenging segment for the machine tools industry for new technological development and R&D in composite machining.

ujarat continues to occupy a distinctive position in the Indian economy. The state has demonstrated leadership in many areas

of manufacturing, which include aerospace, automobile and metal, among others. The adoption of innovative and high-end machines in Gujarat has seen a rise in the past few years. Some of the sunshine industries, which have given a boost to the machine tools industry in the state, include:

AEROSPACEThe Indian aerospace industry is on the threshold of entering into a new era where it will assume greater responsibility in making the nation self-reliant in defence production. The resurgence of India’s manufacturing industry has been remarkable. Various new technologies have made their way into the manufacturing process here.Multi-axis machiningMulti-axis machining has been used in aerospace applications for many years as it can machine complex shapes in

a single setup, thereby saving time. The ability to automatically orientate the head to the correct position significantly cuts machining time and reduces the need for multiple fixtures. An additional benefit is gained by using short cutters that permit accurate machining. Currently, there is more usage of dedicated flexible machining processes in order to minimise the set up time and maximise machine uptime for highly value-added work. Nowadays, aerospace companies rely more on multi-axis machines (5- to 7-axis) to provide flexibility in handling/manufacturing different kinds of complex components.

The latest technology development in the machine tools industry is also a reason for the growing recognition of multi-axis machines. As the industry progresses, multi-axis capability no longer remains a novelty, but a major requirement that is easily achieved in the aerospace machining industry. While, previously, the technology used to manufacture components was unavailable, the advancements and

innovations have now made multi-axis machines practical. Accuracy in manufacturing components for aerospace assemblies is a must for achieving a higher factor of safety. Even slight negligence in accuracy and finishing of a component can result in a disastrous situation. High-precision technologiesThe aerospace industry across the world is influenced by globalisation, changing economic environment and ever-changing demand. Airline companies worldwide have more choices now, which, in turn, puts pressure on aircraft manufacturers to deliver quality aircraft as efficiently as possible. This has induced manufacturers to do away with old production systems and adopt new methods of production. Today, the world of aerospace machining relies heavily on high-end precision technologies, latest software, robots and sensor technology. The automation currently used in aerospace machine shops is more reliable. Moreover, it reduces human errors and provides production with higher speed and

efficiency. According to Indian aerospace component manufacturers, they are witnessing increased demand in the domestic and international markets. They have to deliver volumes without compromising on quality. The only available option is to adopt automation of systems, thereby giving rise to increase in demand for high-end precision machining. While aircraft are produced at faster rates, suppliers and manufacturers of aircraft accessories must continue to balance increased productivity and efficiency with quality & innovation. Modern technologies used in boosting manufacturing for the aerospace industry include programmable machines & tools, material selection, high-speed data communication, robots and sensor technology, supercomputing, virtual manufacturing & complex visualisation and advanced forging techniques.

AUTOMOBILEUpcoming automobile hub, Gujarat, has made constant developments in machining technologies, as companies here have virtually transformed the automotive manufacturing concepts in the global market. With enhanced productivity, world-class quality and superior finish, the industry has certainly come a long way. Automobile component manufacturers need to consistently deliver quality products at limited cost and within a stipulated time. With the help of high-speed machining and sophisticated software, manufacturers are now able to machine complex shapes within the above parameters. Electric Discharge MachiningWire Electric Discharge Machining (EDM) uses a wire electrode that travels through the conductive work piece. In this process, the electrically charged wire is monitored by a CNC system. It removes material from the work piece by spark erosion. The advantages of EDM are that conventional EDM machines can be programmed for vertical machining, rotational, spin and

indexing machining cycles & hardened work pieces can be machined, thereby eliminating the deformation caused by heat treatment. Complex dies sections and moulds can be produced accurately, faster, and at lower costs. This versatility gives EDM many advantages over conventional machine tools. The multiple work pieces set up and unattended operation saves a lot of the operator’s time, which, otherwise, can be fruitfully utilised to perform other job functions. Additionally, this system is very cost-effective. With improvement in cutting speed, reliability, unattended operation and accuracy, this technique is finding wider applicability in many industries such as aerospace and automotive.

OTHER MACHINING METHODSAlmost all the major industries – be it aerospace, automobile, energy or consumer goods manufacturing companies – have adopted various new age cutting technologies. They are used according to the job specification and requirements and result in better productivity, speed and reduction in ever-increasing machining cost.

The key to producing quality work and investing in equipment wisely is having information on which cutting method to use for a particular application. While waterjet cutting is perceived as competing with laser, plasma and EDM, many shops use more than one of these processes and view them as complementary to each other. Here’s taking a closer look at some of these processes… Waterjet cuttingWaterjets are often used to cut short-run prototypes that require minimum tooling or fixturing. They are also used for net-shape cutting, in which the final part is produced without the need for secondary operations to achieve required tolerance or surface finish. Besides this, waterjets are used for hogging out, in which the abrasive waterjet rough-cuts a part to within about 0.015 inch tolerance. It is finished

on a milling machine to achieve a tighter tolerance and smoother surface. As one of the most important and extensive processing methods in green manufacturing, waterjet has become one of the most important technologies in sheetmetal cutting process, as it has been proved to be a highly effective method for cutting almost any flat material, including aluminium. Laser cuttingIn many metal cutting processes, it is difficult to achieve the required shapes and clarity. This can be resolved by the laser cutting technology, which gives proper shape and accuracy in less time. It is considered to be the best method for making complex shapes in the metal cutting industry and micro-level marking in medical and electrical & electronics industries. Plasma cuttingPlasma cutting is a vital process for any metal fabrication shop. Unlike oxy-fuel, plasma can cut stainless steel, aluminium and brass, as well as mild steel. Plasma is a thermal process that cuts electrically conductive materials. Plasma cutting involves a near-supersonic jet of ionised gas that leaves a negatively charged electrode inside a torch tip. The ionised gas then cuts the positively charged metal. In other words, the plasma stream cuts by heat – about 20,000⁰F-50,000⁰F – essentially melting the material being cut.

GUJARAT SET TO RULEThe true success of an effective industrial policy lies in the modernisation of the mode of production, which stands true when it comes to Gujarat. While the state is slated to become the global automobile hub in the next few years, it is said to be the rising star when it comes to the engineering and metal industry. With the manufacturing industry in Gujarat growing by leaps and bounds, machining is also set to witness an all-time high in the next couple of years.

n India, the adoption of automation is on the rise, but it is still in the early stages. Automation is being primarily used

in industries where repetitive tasks need to be performed on a daily basis and in sectors that need to deal with harsh working environments. In the past couple of years, with growing competition, companies are increasingly growing conscious about being accurate and consistent – which has led to more usage of automation.

Now, with the emergence of various versions, the machine tools industry has found openings in various sectors, such as electrical control panels, steel doors & windows, steel furniture, cable trays, kitchen equipment, refrigeration and air-conditioning industry & pharmaceutical equipment, among others.

Due to various developments in automation, such as NC, CNC and robotics, among others, many sectors have come forward to adopt automation technology. Various

industries, which have adopted this technology, have found that it has not only helped reduce their production time considerably, but it has also helped them attain higher accuracy as per customers’ expectations. “We have designed and implemented low-cost automation in our NC press brakes and shear. We had manufactured first CNC press brakes of 320MT capacity in 1995. And because of our in-house R&D efforts, we are able to offer solution-based technology and manufacture innovative products

With the per capita income rising and customers demanding international standards, manufacturers in Gujarat have understood the importance of technology to meet the demand and also stay in the competition. To add to this, the state also sees large investments taking place from industry majors like Tata, Maruti Suzuki, Ford, Essar and Reliance, to name a few. The competition and investments together are providing strong growth prospects for automation in the long term. According to experts, with new facilities coming up, automation will surely fi nd a new base in Gujarat.

such as special purpose presses and plants for manufacturing saw pipes having press capacity of 1,500MT x 12,500 mms and hydro tube tester having capacity of 1,800 MT,” said AA Chandavarkar, VP – Marketing, NuGEN Machineries, Ahmedabad.

CONSTANT INNOVATION REQUIREDVarious companies in Gujarat have now started to feel the need for instrumentation, control and automation in the industry. The growing awareness among Indian consumers has ensured that the process industry has the right mix of technologies, which can increase the growth opportunities that the industry has been eyeing for a long time now.

As automation is advancing at a fast pace, it is something that needs constant innovation and technology advancements that will thrust the implementation of automation. While everything may seem perfect at the face of it, India, on the whole, still has much to worry about the state of innovation in the automation industry.

Many companies are making large investments in bringing the latest technologies for processes, but more awareness is required to churn the best out of automation. The demand for technology has put India as well as Gujarat on the path of economic growth.

INDUSTRIES RELYING ON AUTOMATIONGujarat, as one of the country’s fastest developing states, has many industries supporting the latest technology and automation. Growing foreign trade, rising internal consumer demand and growth in infrastructure have only given the entire financial set up a new lease of life. The state has now realised the importance of developing its own strength with automation. Automation, they say, is the answer to India’s pursuit for becoming a world-class industrial competitor and Gujarat stands by it.

India’s reliance on automation for

power plants, refineries, chemical and metal production is increasingly growing along with that of the state. Automation is also needed to enhance process safety and plant availability as well as efficiently use the limited energy resources while trying to be as sustainable as possible. Automation is a single solution for achieving a balance between quality as well as environment. Apart from this, the growing interface, optimisation, quality control and product tracking are a few advantages that India has now estimated to receive from higher automation controls.

GROWING AUTOMOBILE HUB & SMEsGujarat is certainly traversing on the growth path. The state has done a commendable job of attracting investments from major automobile companies. Earlier this year, companies like Ford Motors and PSA Peugeot

Citroen announced that they would invest in setting up manufacturing facilities in the state. Maruti Suzuki had also announced last year that Gujarat will be its hub in the next round of expansion. Tata Motors has already set up a facility for its small car, Nano. The entry of auto vendors will also help auto MNCs source components locally, which means that SMEs located in Gujarat will witness a rise in demand. Owing to this, in recent times, automation seems to have gained importance even in the medium and small units in Gujarat. With automation equipment becoming more usable and affordable, the cost-benefit works in favour of these small industries, thereby driving

automation further.

MANUFACTURING LANDSCAPEThe booming Indian economy with surging domestic demand and global growth opportunities is spurring Gujarat’s manufacturing companies to expand. “Presently, there is a little slowdown in the machine forming industry; or rather, in the Indian Industry. But we feel that this is a passing phase and the Indian machine forming industry will recover within a short span of time. Being optimistic, we foresee improvement in the Indian economy, which, we expect, will witness good growth rates. We also hope for excellent growth potential for the Indian machine forming industry in the ensuing years. Of late, many countries are looking at India as a reliable source of sheet metal forming and cutting machines. With this kind of prevailing potential, we can definitely be sure of a sustainable growth rate for this industry in the years to come,” added Chandavarkar.

MORE SCOPE AWAITS AUTOMATIONWith the global economy expanding and resulting in growth in demand, manufacturing will also experience a transformation. With the change in technology and consumer demands, manufacturing companies are moving away from vertically integrated structures to horizontally linked network models.

According to industry experts, the Indian auto market is expected to triple to three million units by 2015. Auto sales in India are growing by 25 per cent annually. With the automobile industry growing at a rapid pace, most of the manufacturers are opting for automation, thereby boosting the sales of such products. As the automotive industry has rightfully stepped into Gujarat to take the lead in manufacturing, there is a lot of scope for automation in the near future.

ROWTH ENABLERS The Rajkot machine tools industry has witnessed 20 per cent growth annually due to two major factors

– growth in auto industries along with growth in the home appliances & consumer durables industry over the last few years. The demand trends are positive as far as Rajkot machine tools industry is concerned. The ‘slowdown syndrome’, as witnessed in other parts of India, has only marginally affected the Rajkot machine tools industry.

INITIATIVES BY RMTMA The Rajkot Machine Tools Manufacturers Association (RMTMA) is actively pursuing growth initiatives with participation from United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) through technology upgradation, development of skills and capital infusion by the

industry. Today, in comparison to other states, the Government of Gujarat is encouraging large-scale investments in the state. This, in turn, has created a bullish demand in all segments of the industry, thereby attracting foreign direct investments into the state. It can be said with confidence that the pace of growth in Gujarat is much faster than the rest of India.

SMEs’ CONTRIBUTIONSMEs have marked their strong presence in Rajkot since the early days of the engineering industry in India. And this trend will continue over the many years to come. The SME sector in Rajkot is dynamic and if there is a slowdown in one sector, SMEs have been quick to switch over to another growth sector eg., from diesel engines to machine tools, bearings investment castings, consumer durables like kitchenware, agro equipment, etc.

GROWING AUTO ANCILLARIES The development of the auto ancillaries industry has had a positive impact all over the country and especially in the Rajkot engineering industry. The growing automotive sector has not only spelt growth in the machine tools industry, but also in the other sectors of local engineering industry like casting, forgings, bearings, sheet metal and other components. With the advent of major auto plants coming up in Gujarat such as Ford, Maruti, GM and Honda, the industry is expected to receive further boost.

ENGINEERING ECOSYSTEM Rajkot is relatively free from ecological problems like air and water pollution due to the very nature of the engineering industry, which does not produce any type of pollutants. Whatever scrap is generated, like cast iron turnings and metal scraps, is also recycled locally.

ROLE OF TECHNOLOGY & AUTOMATION Technology and automation have played significant roles in the local industry, especially in the machine tools industry. The Rajkot machine tools industry used to be a small-scale industry manufacturing only conventional mechanical machine tools. But with technology advancement and automation, this scenario has radically changed. Rajkot is now a leading machine tools manufacturing hub with advanced technology machine tools like CNC machines, HMCs and VMCs as compared to countries like the US, Germany and Japan. At present, machines manufactured in Rajkot are exported to advanced regions of the world like West Europe. This is an astounding achievement. Many small industries in Rajkot have switched over to CNC machines instead of labour intensive conventional machines. This

OUR JOURNEY TILL NOW In 1992, we entered the Surat market with our laser systems for diamond processing. Back then,

the market was wholly served by foreign machine manufacturers. When we introduced our high-end CNC technology, nobody knew much about CNCs. We created a system which bridged the gap between the layman and CNC, which was not an easy feat to achieve. This gave us the winning edge in the diamond industry as now, operating the machine did not require skilled engineers. As a result, the demand for our machinery went up.

Over the years, we created different divisions including a medical division, where we manufacture surgical lasers for different ENT surgical equipment; an electronics division, where we make our own electronic hardware control,

etc.; and a software division. All these divisions cater to the manufacturing industry. Apart from these, we have another division that caters to the diamond industry. We have an industrial division, that caters to industrial laser cutting, laser marking, laser welding and laser micromachining. These are some of the major machines, which are widely used in various industrial segments. Besides, we also custom-design systems.

BENEFITS OF SETTING UP BASE IN GUJARATThe infrastructure of Gujarat is conducive for industrial growth in the state. Being in a hi-tech industry, we have to deal with many foreign clients. When they visit us, they are impressed with the overall infrastructure development in the state. Gujarat offers a whole new experience in comparison

to other Indian states, which, in a way, has been a crucial driving force for us.

DEMAND TRENDS WITNESSED IN THE PAST 5 YEARSGujarat has improved dramatically over the past few years. And with the kind of developments and the increasing number of multinational companies foraying into the state, the scope for improvement in terms of technology has scaled up. Unlike earlier, when people were hesitant to buy high-end technology claiming it was too expensive, people now have started absorbing it into their processes. They have understood the advantages of using latest technologies. After experiencing an increase in productivity turnover, people have started realising the value attached to the cost factor. People have also realised that Indian manufacturers are quite capable of manufacturing systems at a competitive price.

FOCUS ON R&D We are an R&D-centric company and all our products have been indigenously made. We have an in-house R&D centre recognised by the Government of India and are jointly linked with defence and government organisations. This, in a way, helps us do intensive research. We also have the credit of developing the first-of-its-kind fibre laser cutting machine in the world. In fact, we are the only Indian company manufacturing this kind of a system and now, the world is looking up to us.

LATEST LASER TECHNOLOGIES Technology & capacity-wise, India has a far better future than other countries. We only need to make sure that the Indian market grows on a different level similar to the way China has grown over the last decade. There have been several advancements as far as technology is concerned. And going forward, the fibre

laser technology will prove to be a big boon. The fibre laser cutting machine and the recently launched Hallmark 4G model have received a good response from the market.

VIBRANT GUJARAT SUMMIT & BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIESDuring the Vibrant Gujarat Summits, many MoUs were signed, which meant big business opportunities for companies like us. Majorly, the demand has been driven by solar and automobile. Tata Motors was the first core automobile entrant in Gujarat, which has offered a big boost to our industry. The onset of MNCs has brought with itself a whole host of allied tier I & II suppliers. Moreover, business for SMEs & MSMEs has witnessed a steep increase.

IMPACT OF GLOBAL RECESSIONARY TRENDS ON YOUR EXPORT BUSINESSPreviously, technology was developed in Europe and the US. Eventually, it was diverted to China. But now, it has

turned in India’s direction. Probably, the next stop would be South Africa, which is undergoing the third stage of development. Presently in India, the demand for technology is high and companies need to satisfy this demand with continuous R&D. Indian companies should build on capacities to serve and cater to the growing needs of the Indian market.

YOUR EXPANSION PLANSWe are now catering to an export demand because of our R&D capabilities and we are quite confident when it comes to supplying machines to the global & domestic market. While exploring

the international market, we have been working on increasing our capacity. We have planned for capacity addition of 1,000 systems by 2013. Recently, we have also launched new products like thin sheet cutting laser, which costs less than a crore. Previously, around the globe, any laser cutting system was priced over a crore. We are now targeting the market with this model, which will cater to small fabricators’ needs. We are India’s biggest laser system manufacturer and are looking forward to positioning ourselves as a `750 crore company by 2015.

MESSAGE TO GLOBAL COMPETITORSIn India, we have strong technical expertise and quality engineers for technology development. Owing to globalisation, the technology that was deployed by global companies, are now readily available with us as well, and, that too, at an affordable cost.

ourney to growth We started the company in 1988 with the manufacturing of conventional lathe and

milling machines. We travelled widely, visited many exhibitions & the machine tool shop floors and realised that it is not tough to manufacture CNC machines. In 2004, we manufactured the first hi-speed CNC machine with integral spindle. Then in 2006-07, we opened our new 12,000 sqft facility in Metoda. This modern headquarter contains a spacious new machine assembly shop, hi-tech manufacturing facility, spindle assembly room, standard room, training facilities, sales office and dedicated CAD centre fully equipped with latest generation of CAD workstations and Pro/ENGINEER. So now, we have both a conventional unit as well as a CNC unit with us. In a short time, we have emerged as the third largest company in India in terms of production, number of product ranges/models. In 2007-08, we also started

VMC manufacturing. We have been instrumental in manufacturing the first oil-geared lathes, which were supplied to Batliboi.

SECTORS CATERED TOMajority of our clients in the manufacturing industry are in the automobile industry. Also, our VMC machines are in great demand in the die & mould industry. For our type of business, automobile ancillaries consume nearly 70-80 per cent of our products. Huge demand has also been witnessed from the education sector. Previously, hands-on training in engineering colleges was given on conventional machinery. Now, CNC machines are used in its place. With the economy growing, colleges are equipping young engineers with skills required to work on CNC machines. Automation is also in demand.

INVESTMENT ADVANTAGESDue to the Vibrant Gujarat Summits, the state has managed to attract huge

investments. But the realisation of this investment has just started. Very few plants have started production. If more companies invest in Gujarat’s auto industry, a direct demand will be created for us as these companies will require machining components.

CHALLENGES IN YOUR BUSINESS The automobile industry requires hi-end machines, which are not presently manufactured in India. That is why, the present import figures are so high. As per reports, the technology gap has not been bridged till now. Presently the manufacturing sector holds 15 per cent share of the GDP. By 2020, the government needs to increase this share up to 25 per cent. But for this, the existing demand has to increase at least 10 times. So, even in 2020, 60 per cent of the machinery will be imported, which is a huge demand-supply gap.

BRIDGING THE DEMAND-SUPPLY GAP Through Indian Machine Tool Manufacturers’ Association (IMTMA), Planning Commission & the Ministry of Heavy Industries, a proposal has been finalised, which will be tabled in the upcoming Budget. This proposal is for the formation of three machine tools park in three zones – South (Bengaluru), West (Rajkot) and North. During this Budget, the funding for this project will be finalised. The key areas in this proposal are training, manpower development, soft loans, R&D centres and common facilities. The Centre will be responsible for the setting up of R&D centres in this park. Due to all these initiatives, the industry will be able to suffice the demand for hi-end machines from the manufacturing sector in the next 10 years.

DRIVING FORCE A critical reason has been the economical growth that has taken place in the last

20 years. As the manufacturing sector grew, the machine tools industry also prospered. Rajkot, as a machine tool hub, has been manufacturing machine tools since the 1950s. The raw materials that was required by the machine tool industry, i.e., casting, was easily available as foundry has been the biggest cluster in Gujarat. Thus, 80 per cent of the need for raw materials was fulfilled from the same place – another reason behind the development of the machine tools industry here. During the last decade, many engineering colleges have also come up in Rajkot, which has provided technical strength to the clusters here. Another aspect to this growth story is that second generation young and aptly trained engineer businessmen have entered the market. They have led to the shift from conventional to hi-end machinery, automation and product upgradation.

ROLE OF UNIDOThrough associations like IMTMA,

units having development potential were identified by UNIDO. UNIDO took into consideration the company’s plans, expansion potentialities, enthusiasm in the new generation towards development, and any feasibility of modifications in the existing product. A group of 25 such companies was formed and UNIDO appointed a consultant to understand their needs in terms of technology, finance, marketing, etc. UNIDO is not a funding agency, but a supporting agency, which helps find technocrats for such companies. They organise trainings, monitoring and analysis.

DEMAND DYNAMICSThe demand for hydraulic machinery used in power plants has come up in a major way. Machine tools are also in demand for earthmoving equipment. Another major source of demand is from companies who are converting systems from conventional to CNC. Demand for automatic loading and

unloading machines has also been witnessed in recent times.

COMPETITION METRICS The presence of international players in the market is a major challenge. India is famous for low-cost & high-quality machinery. This has acted as a benefit for small Indian players in the present market. But as these companies grow from small to large-scale, they will face direct competition from foreign players who already have the benefit of mass production and R&D capabilities.

YOUR VISION FOR THE COMPANYWe took up expansion activity last year. Next year, we will be manufacturing certain components through backward integration. In this year, we are adding new mother machines and improving & production processes. Next year, we will start providing automation solution with our machines.

OUR JOURNEY TO GROWTH We started our company in 1985 and over the years, introduced modern

design concepts for our grinding machines – the models of our machines vary in size. We have also developed our technology based on German concepts, which improved the performance of our machinery. We have received a favourable market response. Presently, we not only supply our products in India, but also to markets in Egypt, Kenya, Singapore and Muscat, among other countries.

NEW AGE DESIGN BENEFITS We are one of the 2-3 manufacturers in India who are manufacturing based on the concept of column moving design. We specialise in V-shaped & flat grinding guide ways. These designs help in achieving lifelong accuracy. To tackle competition from Taiwanese

and Chinese manufacturers apart from Indian companies, we designed our products such that they offered better performance and accuracy as compared to our overseas & domestic competitors.

Earlier, the machines that we were manufacturing only catered to general surface grinding for plain job works. But, in India, grinding machines are used in many industries like wind turbine manufacturing, aeronautical parts machining, hydro turbine machining, etc., in which profile grinding is carried out. For profile grinding, the technology that we were initially using was not of great help.

So, we started developing new models like CNC quick field grinding for SPM job. When it comes to managing and training the manpower for this hi-end machinery, we hold training workshops during the year to make sure that our staff is

well-equipped with the latest technologies.

AUTOMATION ADOPTION We have slowly started adopting automation in our shop floor. We have already seen two major benefits of adopting automation, viz., enhanced production rate and increase in accuracy level. Apart from that, we no longer have to be dependent on the operator’s skill. After all, it is the machinery that we are using.

MAJOR DEMAND DRIVERS For us, the demand has been the maximum from the die & mould industry. Apart from that, there is high demand for the SPM grinding machine in the wind energy sector and aeronautics parts manufacturing segment. Our clients include Siemens, where our machinery is used in the hydro turbine unit at Baroda. Besides, Bengaluru-based aeronautics parts manufacturing companies also use our machinery.

EXPANSION PLANSWe will be adding capacity in a place located 10 km from the existing facility. This will help us in manufacturing big machinery and will also increase our existing production capacity to 100-120 machines.

GUJARAT VIS-À-VIS OTHER STATES As compared to Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, Gujarat is lacking in the machine tools industry. But if we continue at the present rate of overall expansion and growth, we will be at par with these states in the next five years. The present development in Rajkot, Ahmedabad and Baroda is very impressive.

ROWTH ENABLERS The liberalisation of import policies by the then Finance Minister Dr Manmohan Singh

and the dynamic leadership of our Hon’ble CM of Gujarat Shri Narendra Modi has prompted investors from various countries to invest in various industrial sectors. This has led to the growth of the machine tools industry, which is the serving industry for the manufacturing sector. Sectors like automobile, infrastructure, telecommunication, power, oil & natural gas are the prime demand drivers for the machine tool industry in Gujarat.

DEMAND TRENDS WITNESSED Modern communication, mass movement towards automation & the use of the highest level of CNC machinery have improved the quality of work and the speed of production.

This has also increased profitability, especially for industries catering to the above engineering vertical. We are now gearing up for 2020 where the whole economy will witness a major transformation.

IMPACT OF VIBRANT GUJARAT SUMMITHuge investments in the oil & gas sector have improved the total market scenario of Gujarat. With more than `20,000 crore invested in Gujarat, apart from Ambanis, Tatas & Birlas, the entire world has come to Gujarat. They have huge plans for setting up modern factories in the state, thereby promoting many small entrepreneurs who wish to pitch in for a share of this vibrant market.

AUTO ANCILLARIES – GROWTH HARBINGER Modernisation, high quality, high productivity and zero rejection have become the need of the

hour to cater to the huge demand coming in from the automobile sector. This has prompted the industry to opt for modern machine tools and replace the conventional time-consuming equipment.

ROLE OF TECHNOLOGY Strategic modernisation is the need of the hour as the advent of Internet has created a revolution in international product sourcing. The world has become one global village where product sourcing is at your finger tips. However, the regional industries are yet to manufacture sophisticated equipment. This needs to be addressed immediately. Also, more engineering graduates also need to be employed in R&D.

DEMANDS FROM THE GOVERNMENTThe government needs to reduce taxes and bank interest rates for the industrial

vertical. The government should also work on making subsidies available to all the segments of the industry.

MESSAGE TO ENTREPRENEURS There is only one way to succeed and that is to be the Numero Uno in your business.

YOUR VISION By 2020, modern companies will survive and more & more MNCs will come to India as trading companies. We have to gear up for this demand surge and competitive landscape.

IDING ON THE GROWTH TRAJECTORY We started the company in 1960. Since then, we have been manufacturing

external grinders, hydraulic cylindrical grinders and centreless grinder hydraulic dressing. Our precise and rugged design centreless grinders gears satisfy the demands of modern industries for high accuracy, economical operations and reliability of performance for thorough feed as well as plunge grinding operations of various metallic, non-metallic cylindrical parts. The machines are suitable for both, large and small production jobs. We are presently supplying machinery to industries located in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Kerala.

DEMAND DYNAMICS Our grinding machines are used in

the automobile, bearing, die-punches, oil engine parts, long bright bars, surgical instruments, bolts, studs, drills and various machine parts manufacturing.

With major investments coming in Gujarat’s automobile industry, we have derived many benefits in terms of profitability and fresh order books. The demand for our machines is

the maximum in the automobile industry. Riding on Gujarat’s development, we have witnessed an overall growth of nearly 30-40 per cent in our business in the last five years.

GROWTH REGIONS Rajkot, Surendranagar and Ahmedabad are the major machine tools hubs. Apart from that, Sanand is also fast catching up owing to investments by biggies such as Maruti and Tata Motors.

CHALLENGES FACED Scrap iron, cast iron and bearings are not readily available in the Surendranagar market. We are presently sourcing it from Rajkot. Also, the price of these products is on the higher side. Due to this, the cost of the machinery that we manufacture goes up by nearly 5-7 per cent. This is a major cost disadvantage. In addition, we are facing competition from Chinese players as their pricing is on the lower side as compared to us.

STANDING UP TO MARKET COMPETITIONWe have always followed the concept of offering the finest production in the form of grinding machines. Our hard work and consistent research & analysis have enabled us to stay abreast with innovative technologies. We are currently exporting machines to Bangladesh, Africa and Sri Lanka apart from a widespread base of customers in India.

CAPACITY ADDITION PLANSOur present capacity is 50 machines per year. We are planning to double our capacity by developing a new plant in Surendranagar. This plant will be ready in the next two years.

YOUR VISIONWe wish to launch new product ranges in grinding machines in the Gujarat market over the next couple of years.

STABLISHING & EXPANDING BASE We founded the company in 1979. We are one of the biggest

manufacturers of plate and section binding in India. We are also into sheet metal machine manufacturing. Our pioneering experience and on-going research for input of modern technology is a source of strength for the machine tools industry. Godson is a renowned name in sheet metal forming industries like coach building, steel furniture, refrigeration, control panel manufacturing, textile machinery manufacturing, etc. Since 1983, the pace of business has been faster and we have sufficient infrastructure to meet the future demand. Our machines like plate bending machine, pinch cum pyramid type plate bending machines with pneumatic clutch are already in

use. We have also exported machines to UAE, Sultanate of Oman, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Mauritius, etc. We are catering to the public sector as well as MNCs. We cater to cement, infrastructure, tower, power industries and heavy fabrication shops.

DEMAND TRENDS The growth of industries and the engineering segment in Rajkot has been impressive. We have doubled our production capacity in the last few years. Presently, we have the biggest market share in the product ranges we offer. We have been facing huge competition from China but I am proud to inform you that our machines are more user-friendly and weather-friendly.

ENGINEERING ECOSYSTEMThe presence of many SSIs and the

growth of some of these SSI units into SMEs have really supported the machine tools industry in Rajkot. SMEs today are getting many benefits from financial institutes as well as the government, which is why we are able to witness investments in the segment. A few more SSI units are expected to make it big in this market. Thus, the engineering ecosystem will keep on growing in the coming years.

SKILL DEFICITIn this region, skilled labour is rarely available. There are around 15 engineering colleges in Rajkot. Despite this, there is a lack of skilled manpower in the region. Even ITI polytechnique diploma holders are not available. This is the major reason for Gujarat not being able to capture prime position in the machine tools industry.

EFFECT OF VIBRANT GUJARAT SUMMITHigh investment in the heavy duty industries has increased the demand for our industry, thereby necessitating an increase in production capacity. We have to have new plants and investments to cater to this surge in demand. Companies will also start exporting their products in the long run, but it will take at least 5-6 years.

YOUR VISION As of now, we are manufacturing machinery up to 80 mm. We wish to manufacture machinery of more than 100 mm, which has not been manufactured by any Indian manufacturer so far. We are also getting into a JV very soon. We would like to be the biggest bending machine manufacturer in India. We are also increasing our capacity with our new plant that is coming up in Rajkot. This will be functional in the next three years.

OUNDATION STONEOur company was started in 1983 with precision, quality and time-bound delivery as the guiding

light. Since then, the company has redefined all three prime principles with its lathe machine products under the brand name, Balaji Lathe. We now enjoy a vital share in lathe machinery industry in India as well as abroad. To achieve this, we have put equal emphasis on two assets – skilled workforce and infrastructure. We have a 6,000 sqft shade, which is equipped with the required machineries to manufacture any type of special purpose machines demanded by our clients. We are also engaged in the designing and manufacturing of special purpose machine tools required for high production rates with consistent quality, which is the need of the hour in engineering. Within the next two years,

we are planning to double our production from 60-70 machines to 140 machines per month. We are also increasing our in-house machine capacity.

MAJOR DEMAND DRIVERSThe education sector has been the major demand driver for us. We are also getting huge demand from the foundry industry. We are targeting the medium and extra heavy duty industries. The demand from these industries has increased 25 per cent year on year over the last five years. Also, the share of the machine tool industry in the heavy industries has increased by about 20 per cent during the last five years.

ROLE OF UNIDO UNIDO has played a vital role in the development of Gujarat machine tools industry during the last five years. They are politically conscious and try to make all the facilities available

for the machine tools industry. They have been majorly responsible for standardisation in the industry.

FACTORS BEHIND RAJKOT’S SUCCESS The presence of the foundry industry has been the major reason for the success of the machine tools industry in Rajkot. Vendors responsible for the job are majorly present in Rajkot. Moreover, SSIs are present here in huge numbers. The presence of these units has created a conducive environment for the overall growth of the machine tools industry here. Also, demand has been created within the state itself because of the growing expanse of heavy industries. Thus, we are getting almost 10 per cent demand from within the state.

COMPETITION FROM OTHER STATESGujarat stands at the No.2 position when it comes to the machine tool industry. The first position is held by Karnataka. One of the major reasons behind this lies in the fact that the land rates in Gujarat are very high as compared to other states. This is a major challenge that industries in Gujarat are facing today. For any expansion activity, land is the most important consideration. The Government of Gujarat is giving land at subsidised rates to big industries but the same is not the case for SSI units.

FROM CONVENTIONAL TO CNCWe are eager to develop a CNC manufacturing division but due to market ups & down, we have not been able to work on that front. Also, for CNC machines, mass manufacturing is required. Only then can profits be derived. For small manufacturing quantities, we will not be able to compete on the cost front as compared to companies like Jyoti CNC and Macpower.

F“The presence of the foundry industry has been the major reason for the success of the machine tools industry in Rajkot. Also, demand has been created within the state itself because of the growing expanse of heavy

industries,” says Vinit Patel, Director, Vinit Engimech, during an interaction with Sumedha Mahorey. Excerpts...

ETTING BASE We are one of the biggest imported machine tools dealers in Gujarat. We started the company

two years back. Over the years, we developed a wide range of latest lathe machines including all geared lathe machines, heavy duty machines, CNC lathe machines, milling machines, radial drilling machines, shearing machines, etc., to serve the needs of advanced machinery for industrial purposes. Being an ISO 9001 CQC registered firm, we supply best quality and durable machines for better performance.

YOUR INTERNATIONAL PARTNERS We are associated with Dalian Machine Tool Group Corporation (DMTG), China. The company is unique in conducting R&D as well as its own casting and parts manufacture. DMTG’s products are sold in more

than 100 countries and regions worldwide through its international distribution & service network, connecting several thousands of sales agents and a number of storage centres to provide global service.

START-UP CHALLENGES The awareness about hi-tech products from foreign players is very low in the Gujarat market. A major constraint also comes from the fact that the workers need to understand the functioning of such machinery. Initially, SSIs and SMEs were reluctant to go in for hi-tech products even though it would help them improve their productivity as well as save time & money. Undoubtedly, the investment for such products is also high as compared to other products available in the market. Nonetheless, after two months of hard work, we were able to build up a technical team to spread awareness

about these products.

SELECTING RIGHT PRODUCT RANGEWe have done a study regarding the demands that will arise over the next 10-15 years in the Gujarat market. We also took into consideration that in the next 20 years, the same pace of growth momentum will continue, as some of the biggest automobile and pharmaceutical companies are coming to Gujarat. So, we decided to bring in hi-tech machines from the international market, which were not easily available in Gujarat before our entry.

DEMAND PULLRecently, we have witnessed growth in the demand for hi-tech products due to labour issues that the machine tools industry in Gujarat is facing. That is why during the last five years, our growth has multiplied by nearly 100 per cent. The consideration that hi-tech products are costly is a tough barrier to cross. But nowadays, our customers are acknowledging the value attached to the same and are considering investing in the same. We have found that Japanese & German collaborated companies are doing well in Gujarat. In the next 10 years, this demand will increase multifold.

GUJARAT VIS-À-VIS OTHER STATESWe are lacking in terms of skills required by the industry from states like Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Punjab, Haryana and the NCR zone. But as per our study, Gujarat will come at par with these states within the next three years.

YOUR VISIONWe plan to cater to all the machine tools industry in all the states of India by 2020. We also want to service the South Asian market.
