Table 14. 1 to Table 14.4:

The Ministry of Rural Development Government of India, commenced the Socio Economic and Caste Census (SECC) 2011, in June 2011 through a comprehensive door to door enumeration across the country. This is the first time such a comprehensive exercise has been carried out for both rural and urban India. It is also expected to generate information on a large number of social and economic indicators relating to households across the country. The main objective of the survey is :

To enable households to be ranked based on their Socio- Economic status. State Governments can then prepare a list of families living below the poverty line

To make available authentic information that will enable caste-wise population enumeration of the country

To make available authentic information regarding the socio economic condition, and education status of various castes and sections of the population

These tables presented data on Employment , Income status and Assets Ownershipof the Households in rural areas.

Highlights

Nearly 10 per cent of 1794 lakh households in the rural areas (as per SECC, 2011)

have salaried job and within this about 5 per cent is in Government, 1.1 per cent in

public sector and the remaining 3.6 per cent is in the private sector. Across major

states, in Himachal Pradesh one out of every four salaried households has footing

in the Government sector, followed by the state of Jammu and Kashmir with about

20 per cent working in this sector.

In so far as payment of income / professional tax by the households having salaried

job is concerned, West Bengal tops the list with 11. 5 per cent, and then

Maharashtra with 9.4 per cent, Uttar Pradesh 9.2 per cent, Karnataka 9.0 per cent

etc.

The results on earnings of the salaried households are less than encouraging. In the

rural parts of the country, the households where the monthly earnings of the

highest earning member is less than Rs. 5000 are three-fifths while the

corresponding figure for the income range of Rs.5000 to 10000 is 17 per cent. The

rest of the households ( about 8 per cent) report monthly income of Rs. 10,000 and

+. Across states, Odisha gets the first place with 88 per cent of households falling in

the first income bracket. Among all the states, West Bengal is an exception with a

corresponding figure of 83 per cent.
