Caregiver Fair

Are you helping to care for a loved one? Caregivers can be young, they can older………...they can be caring for children, parents, grandparents,

siblings and friends. Many caregivers are dutiful family, friends

or neighbors and sometimes they may be unaware of any available

support services such as transportation, nutritional care,

financial counseling, home safety, respite and home care. This

Caregiver Fair will attempt to provide information about many of these

issues. These speakers will be at the

Caregiver Fair:

Michael Burkey: Dogs & Seniors Living with Passion—the benefits of dog companionship. Michael will show how dogs enhance people’s lives and explain the differences between emotional support and

service dogs.

Bonnie Weintrob will present a Laughter Wellness Program on how

to use laughter as a sound and

reliable therapeutic tool.

Jennifer Howard, Executive Director of the Alzheimer’s Association, will learn practical and easy tips as well as advice about caring for and loving

through the dementia journey.

Board for April

The photo board has been a feature in the center

for one year now. Although there have been no

suggestions left in the envelope on the board for

future themes, I do see people looking at the

photos displayed, so it would appear that folks are

enjoying the photo board. And so to celebrate

one year of sharing photos, let’s share any photo

with a birthday theme in April! Birthdays from 1

to 100, it doesn’t matter. Just add the name of the

person celebrating their birthday below the photo

(and the birthday they are celebrating if you

choose!).

As always, all photos will be returned at the end

of each month in the large envelope on the photo

board located next to our library.

And please feel free to suggest

themes for upcoming months as

well !!

IXL Pen Pal Program

Danielle Colombo, the Director of the IXL Learning Center in Hamburg has approached us to invite us to join them in a Pen Pal program. I used to have a Pen Pal when I was younger and thoroughly enjoyed the simple act of writing a letter to someone who did not live near me.

I learned a lot and made a new friend. The IXL Learning Center has about 20 - 25 children between the ages of 6 - 10 years of age and since the schools do not teach children how to write letters anymore, I thought this

might help the kids plus be lots of fun for us. It would help them learn about seniors who are not their

grandparents as well as help us learn some of the real differences between folks our age and their ages. If you are interested in becoming a Pen Pal, let me know so that Danielle and I can get

you all and the kids together!

Miracle Ear Janis from Miracle Ear has changed the

day she is usually here. She will be here on: Monday, April 17. No appointment is

necessary however if you need a full hearing test we need prior notice so she can

Senior Advisory Board Meeting Re-Cap

Meeting called to order at 10:03 am. All board members present except Chuck Menzies. No

business-member-at-large.

Call to Public: Susan Pack commented on Kiwanis lunch, was much better with more

seating although the 50/50 was missed.

Correspondence: none; Deb Kaiser added the card received by the Pipes Choir

Old Business: (a) Bazaar Monies: Chris brought square footage of center building to get bids on stripping the wallpaper and re-painting. (b) Floor Strip & re-wax: will be done again in May

and October. (c) Pot Luck: having a traditional Irish corned beef & cabbage dinner from C & C’s Catering. (d) Business Member-at-Large: letter sent to Amy Goble thanking her for all she’s

done for the center over the years; plan on trying to contact someone from Kroger’s as we feel

they may be better equipped to provide service to the center.

New Business: (a) Isabelle Collins: passed away, served on the Senior Advisory board for many years and will be put on the Memorial Plaque (b) Cleaning Price: received a quote from Reese’s Commercial Cleaning, motion by Pat Lanthier , seconded by Gary Kaiser to have them begin

cleaning at the center on a bi-weekly basis as provided in her proposal. (c) Attendance: 2017: January total of 911, weekly average of 222, daily average of 54.5; February total 920, weekly 230, daily 48. 2016: January total of 863, weekly average of 215, daily average of NA;

February total 709, weekly 166, daily NA. 2015: January total of 709, weekly average of 177,

daily NA; February total 666, weekly 166, daily NA.

Call to the Public: Susan Pack has had some complaints about the newsletter delivery, it’s not always at seniors homes; Chris explained that it is sent off to the printer at least 10 days

before the end of the month but it is considered bulk mail so your mail carrier decides if and when he/she will deliver it. Making a complaint to your mail carrier or post office may be the

only way to get it delivered on time.

Board Comments: Mike Dolan discussed the millage and the Parks Master Plan, the township needs to know what the residents want and they have a survey to determine the wants and

needs of the residents. It is very important that the residents complete the survey as it lets the township know where to spend their monies. Some of the more important wishes received from the surveys indicate residents want an Amphitheater, a Community Garden and Farmers

Market; Mike also discussed an Eagle Scout who is constructing and installing a raised bed

Community Garden behind the Senior Center.

Next meeting will be May 10, 2017 at 10:00 am
