SILABUS DOCTORAL PROGRAM OF BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES
Doctoral Program of Biomedical Sciences (DPBS) Faculty of Medicine Universitas Indonesia (FMUI) offer two types of class with
identical competency for the candidates:
1. Course and Research class
2. Research class
Competency of the Graduates of the Doctoral Program in Biomedical Sciences:
A Doctor of Biomedical Sciences is a graduate who is capable of developing their expertise in biomedical sciences and medical
technology through a high quality research and innovation that is relevant to the national and global priority health problems. The
Graduates always uphold a high scientific ethics and integrity and are able to compete in the biomedical sciences field at the global
level.
Prerequisites for applicants of the Doctoral Program in Biomedical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine Universitas Indonesia
DPBS via Course and Research Class DPBS via Research Class
- Achievement index from previous study = 3.00 (ranged
from 0.00 - 4.00)
- If the applicant’s previous major was from non-
biomedical sciences, the candidate is required to undergo
matriculation semester prior to admission
- Admission test score: TPA = 550; English/TOEFL = 500
- Passed interview exam
- Achievement index from previous study = 3.00 (ranged
from 0.00 - 4.00)
- The candidate’s previous major have to be from
Biomedical Sciences or other studies matched with
Biomedical Sciences
- Admission test score: TPA = 550; English/TOEFL = 500
- Passed interview exam
- Have at least one candidate of Promotor Team from the
Faculty of Medicine Universitas Indonesia
- Have a written pre-proposal that has been discussed with
the future Promotor Team
- Previously have published a minimum of 2 publications
linear to the proposed projects in the pre-proposal
The Doctoral Program in Biomedical Sciences consists of 44 credits that can be earned in 6 (six) semesters.

biomedical research.

interpretation of

Bioengineering,
which are mainly
related to tissue and
organ engineering.
This course
is a multidisciplinary
collaboration
between the
Universitas Indonesia
(UI)
and the National
University of
Singapore Tissue
Engineering Program
(NUSTEP). Several
lectures were given
by invited lecturers
from NUSTEP,
lecturers from FMUI/
IMERI FMUI
researchers, lecturers
from outside the
institution
as well as researchers
from other research
center.
Topics
courses include:
introduction to
bioengineering,
biomechanics,
biomaterials and
tissue engineering,
bioinstrumentation
and biosensors,
biosignal processes,
bioelectricity,
computational
biology, bioimaging
and
biomedical optics.
After taking this
course, students are
expected to be able to
select and apply
bioengineering
principles in
composing
future research road
map. Evaluation of
learning is performed
with the exams based
on the given lectures
related to
bioengineering

Sem 2 Salemba After attending this course, students
expected to find a research cluster for a place to conduct the doctoral research
and establish working relationships with promoters and / or co-promoters
who is an expert in related research clusters / labs.
Students will conduct a research internship in a selected research cluster / lab for 4-6 weeks. Each student can choose 3 research clusters / labs.
Students are expected to attend presentations on the results of research in
research group, research cluster / lab, getting hands on experiments and
research mentoring from research supervisors in the research cluster / lab and / or from
research fellows or Doctoral students in semesters 4-6. Performance assessment students are conducted by a research supervisor in a research cluster / lab.

Students can

of his Doctoral

Research proposal is
a research proposal
comprehensive
coverage that
includes objectives,
background and
analysis
data from
experiments or
preliminary studies
that have been carried
out. Including
in the research
proposal is the work
plan per-semester
and publication
target.
It is highly
recommended that
students have started
doing experiments or
preliminary studies,
which can show
that the research
direction designed is
feasible and
recent (recent) in the
field.
Assessment of
research proposals is
given after the
Proposal
Examination. Exam
Proposals include: (i)

(ii) mastery of
research
methodology, (iii)

and research
collaboration

produce research
leaders in their fields
of expertise. The
doctoral students are
provided with
lectures on the theme
of leadership,
trained in problem
solving based on
leadership cases in
academics,
and discuss
leadership and
research
collaboration.
This lecture will be
given by resource
persons from leading
academic institutions,
industry as well as
directors of the
national biomedical
research institute.
The learning
evaluation will be
held in the form of
examination of
course materials or
course assignments.

scientific articles

and evaluated by
supervisor and

publication evidence
of scientific articles

not have a Masters in
Biomedics
background
can take related
research in-depth
courses of the same
type
available in the
Masters Program
FMUI in the
respective semester.
• Students can attend
lectures at other study
programs in FMUI or
other faculties within
the UI that are in
accordance with
guidebook or catalog
of Masters / Doctoral
Programs in
Universitas Indonesia
• In the event that the
two conditions above
are not possible then
the Promoter
can conduct the
course by themselves

8 Every Doctoral
Program student is
required to take a
research promotion
exam which is a
scheduled academic
activity in order to
evaluate the
accountability of the
substance of the
dissertation text
concerned. Promotion
exams are held after:
- Students pass the
pre-promotion exam
- Students have
carried out scientific
dissemination of their
research results
At least 1 oral or
poster presentation at
an international and /
or national scientific
conference in the
field of biomedicine
or medicine (life
sciences) recorded in
a process book can be
in the form of a full
paper or an abstract.
- Students have
scientific publications
related to their
research as the first
authors that have
been accepted to be
published in indexed
international
scientific magazines
(Scopus or Pubmed).
- Students have
undergone
discussions with the
promoter team
regarding their
dissertation
manuscripts at least 3
times.
- Submit 12 copies of
the dissertation
manuscript and in the
form of 1 CD which
has been signed by
the entire team of
promoters 10 days
before the scheduled
exam date.
- Students have
uploaded all required
documents to the
pdib.fk.ui.ac.id
website
- Students submit an
application letter to
Head of study
program which is
signed by the
promoter for
scheduling a
promotion exam to
the PDIB FKUI
secretariat no later
than 10 days before
the proposed test
date.

This scientific

divided into 2 parts,
namely the first part

Promotion 8 Promotion
Examination is a
scheduled academic
activity in order to
evaluate a doctoral
candidate's
dissertation to obtain
the highest academic
degree, Doctor. The
terms and conditions
for the Promotion
Exam are as follows:
• Promotion Exams
can be carried out if
the requirements for
scientific publications
have been
implemented by
Doctoral Candidates,
according to the
Rector's Decree
No.016 / R / SK / UI /
2016, namely at least
1 (one) published
international
proceeding, 1 (one)
international scientific
journal Q3 / Q4 is in
the published status of
1 (one) international
scientific journal Q1 /
Q2 in the status of
"accepted".
• The promoter and
co-promoter give
written approval on
the dissertation
manuscript / book for
the promotion exam to
be carried out.
• Head of study
program reports to the
Dean that the students
have finished holding
the Pre-promotion and
are ready to be tested
on the Promotion
Exam.
• Promotion
examinations are
carried out by the
Promotion
Examination
Committee. The
Promotion
Examination
Committee is
appointed by means of
a Chancellor's Decree
on the proposal of the
Head of study
program through the
Dean of the Faculty of
Medicine, University
of Indonesia, with a
minimum number of 6
(six) people and a
maximum of 9 (nine)
people.
• The Promotion
Examination
Committee consists of
(a) promoters and
promoters, (b)
examiners, (c) at least
one committee
member from outside
the University of
Indonesia.
• The examiners
consist of experts
related to the scientific
field occupied by the
doctoral candidate.
• The Promotion
Examination is led by
the Chairperson of the
Examination
Committee who is a
member of the
committee other than
the Promoter /
Promoter and the
committee from
outside. If the
Chairperson of the
Session Committee is
unable to attend, then
one of the examiners
can be replaced.
• Promotion
Examination is held in
an open session for a
maximum of 2 (two)
hours which is held in
two stages, namely the
presentation of a
dissertation by a
prospective doctor for
1530 minutes and
question and answer
for about 45-60
minutes.
• Doctoral candidates
are declared to have
passed the Promotion
exam if the Promotion
Exam scores obtained
are at least B with a
minimum GPA of
3.00
