Message from the Chair
Congratulations to the faculty, administrators, and students of our Ontario
Internationally Educated Physical Therapists Bridging (OIEPB) Program!
After reviewing its successes thus far, the Ministry of Citizenship and
Immigration has awarded the OIEPB Program another three years of
funding.
This month’s edition of PT Link highlights the contributions of our faculty in
2013. With so many hard-working and dedicated faculty, it is always a
difficult choice when selecting the recipients of our Exceptional Achievement
and Recognition Awards. Thank you to our Awards Committee for
organizing a wonderful event and to the broader community who came out
to show their support for our award winners.

Profiling the 2013 Department of Physical Therapy
Exceptional Achievement and Recognition Awards
The Department of Physical Therapy hosted their annual Exceptional Achievement and
Recognition Awards Ceremony on February 20th, 2014.
These awards provide an opportunity to acknowledge those who have made outstanding
contributions to the Department of Physical Therapy curriculum. This year, we were pleased to
recognize over 80 individuals and teams for their outstanding contributions.
Department of Physical Therapy Exceptional Achievement Awards
The Exceptional Achievement Awards recognize individuals who have made exceptional
contributions to the profession of Physical Therapy in one of four major areas: Practitioner,
Education, Research and Professional Development. We are pleased to recognize the following
2013 Exceptional Achievement Award recipients for their longstanding and exceptional
contributions to the field:
Kinny Quan Velanoski - Education
Kinny is a graduate of the University of Toronto. She is currently an
Advanced Practice Clinician in Orthopaedics at St. Joseph’s Health
Centre. Kinny has demonstrated longstanding contributions to the
education of physical therapy students. She has been involved as
clinical instructor, clinical lab assistant, facilitator to both PT Logic and
Clinical Reasoning, and guest lecturer within the Department of Physical
Therapy curriculum. Kinny works tirelessly to engage in meaningful
student learning, motivating students to become evidence-based
scholarly practitioners and encouraging inquiry while providing ongoing
constructive feedback. Congratulations to Kinny on her achievement!
Jennifer Agnew – Practitioner
Jennifer has been a Physical Therapist at the Hospital for Sick Children
in Respiratory Medicine since 1989. She has pioneered physical therapy
care in the Cystic Fibrosis Clinic over the years and is recognized
nationally and internationally for her extensive clinical knowledge and
contributions to the field. Jennifer was the recipient of the Award of
Distinction from the Ontario College of Physiotherapists in 2010 and can
now add the Exceptional Achievement Award as Practitioner to her
repertoire!

The first years are back at 500 fresh off their first placement
experience, where they had a great chance to show the
physiotherapy community all their hard work since September. The
second years are eagerly awaiting their chance at writing the PNE
in May and June.
The annual Blue Mountain ski trip was a great weekend of skiing
and program bonding between the first and second years. In
intramurals, rehab (PT and OT) continue to be a powerhouse,
capturing the Division 1 Coed volleyball championship.
Student council is hard at work planning the graduation formal in
June, eagerly awaited by the class of 2014!

Private Practice Curriculum Renewal and Business Theme Discussion Forum
On behalf of Sharon Switzer-McIntyre, Jackie Schleifer Taylor, Euson Yeung and Sharon Gabison, I would like to thank everyone who participated in the Private Practice Curriculum Renewal and Business Theme Discussion Forum that took place in early February 2014. The discussion and information gathered through the forum event provided a good platform for enabling some renewed thinking about the content and delivery within several aspects of the MSc. PT curriculum, including the transition of the Business and Practice Management curriculum from a theme to a course, private sector involvement in clinical education and 1 day per week clinical teaching model, and content and teaching methodologies specific to electrotherapy. A summary report to all participants will follow in March 2014. I would also like to thank Linda Stone from the Department of Physical Therapy for her invaluable counsel in making this event happen. Sincerely, Allan Macdonald Member of the Business and Practice Management Advisory Group

A CALL FOR RESEARCH PROJECTS!
Department of Physical Therapy, University of Toronto
MScPT Research and Program Evaluation for Physical Therapy Practice
Deadline for Submission – Tuesday May 20th
, 2014
The Department of Physical Therapy is preparing for the 2014/2015 Research Component of the
MScPT Program and invites physical therapists with a Professional or Research Masters or PhD to
submit a project outline and participate as research advisors to one of 18 student groups. Each
group will be comprised of approximately 5 students. Research advisors will be paired with an
established researcher (PhD) from the Graduate Department of Rehabilitation Sciences, referred to
as the faculty advisor, who has experience with graduate student supervision.
The content of the research component of the MScPT program, entitled “Research and Program
Evaluation for Physical Therapy Practice”, is amortized over three Units (Units 6, 10 and 12). In Unit
6 (September 22, 2014 – October 10, 2014), the student groups will develop the research protocol
and submit the protocol for Ethics approval. The role of the research advisor is to facilitate this
process with the support of the faculty advisor and a teaching assistant. Due to the short duration of
Unit 6, advisors are expected to meet weekly with students and review the final ethics protocol with
a quick turnaround time of 1-2 days. To enable effective communication, we recommend a
maximum of three advisors (not including the faculty advisor).
Students will work on their projects throughout Units 8A (January 5, 2015 – April 3, 2015) and 8B
(May 18, 2015 – June 12, 2015) having Mondays as protected research time. Throughout this
period, advisors maintain contact with students through email, phone and meetings as the project
requires. In Unit 10/12 (June 15, 2015 – July 24, 2015), the groups will analyse their data and
complete a draft of a manuscript for publication and a poster. Advisors facilitate data analysis and
review drafts (no more than 2 drafts) of the manuscript and the poster. Faculty advisors provide
guidance and support in the analysis and write-up phase. Formal presentations and submission of
the final manuscript occur at the end of Unit 10/12.
New in 2014! We ask that research and faculty advisors meet with student groups once in
September 2014 prior to the start of Unit 6 to review study objectives and provide guidance on
background literature for students to review in preparation for Unit 6.

New and Emerging Academic Leaders Program - Deadline for Applications
The NEAL program is now accepting applications for the 2014-2015
cohort to begin in September 2014.
Academic leaders are often promoted into roles based on their
academic expertise with little, if any, leadership development. NEAL
is specifically designed to fill that gap. The goal of the NEAL program
is to foster a productive, visionary and collaborative academic leader
in the Academic Health Science System. Participants will become
members of a community of leaders who have the mindsets and
capabilities to successfully run their division, research, education or
other academic unit and help their faculty be successful.
