August 23rd, 2020 - Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time
This Weekend’s Readings
TODAY’S READINGS: First Reading: Isaiah 22:19-23
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 138:1-2, 2-3, 6, 8
Second Reading: Romans 11:33-36
Gospel: Matthew 16:13-20
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION: “You are Peter and upon this rock I will build my Church
and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.” - Matthew 16:18
21ST SUNDAY… A VOICE OF AUTHORITY FOR THE CHURCH
"And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church." Simon got a new name after his profes-
sion of faith. As soon as he declared to Jesus, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God," Jesus renamed him with
a title that means "rock." And with that name he gave Peter the mission to be a solid foundation upon which he would
build his church. Not Peter's church. Not James or Paul's church. Not Martin Luther's or John Calvin's or anybody
else's. This is Jesus' church, the church of Christ himself, that we call the Catholic Church.
So it was Christ himself who desired to give authority in the church — "the keys to the kingdom of heaven" — to a
human leader. Peter was thus established as the first pope. He exercised a special kind of headship, within the
community of the apostles and the church at large, because Jesus gave him the power to do so, not because
Peter claimed it for himself. And so too every pope since, right down to our Holy Father today, exercises this unique
leadership within the Church.
What a gift this is to us! Jesus knew well the human tendency to squabble and disagree, to argue and compete. He knew
that the church would be prone to all of this because of her members, and that providing a final voice of authority,
saying in effect that "the buck stops here" would be helpful for maintaining unity. As Catholics, even in spite of the
differing opinions and perspectives that are manifest in the Church, we nonetheless maintain a strong sense of identity
and belief thanks in large part to the papacy. Today, may we give thanks for the pope and pray for him as he strives to
lead all of us closer and closer to Christ.

UPDATES AND REMINDERS REGARDING THE NEW SUNDAY MASS SCHEDULE Reminder that our new temporary Sunday Mass schedule is in effect (see page 5). Last weekend the Saturday 6:00 pm,
Sunday 8:00 am and 6:00 pm Masses were all very crowded. The 10:00 am and 12:00 noon Masses were not nearly as
busy so please keep that in mind when planning which Mass you will attend, especially if your schedule is flexible.
Please arrive no more than 30 minutes early for the 10:00 am and 12:00 noon Masses as we need to allow time for
cleaning the church in between Masses and for the parking lot to clear. Distancing and sanitizing protocols continue to
be in place and masks are compulsory at all Masses. Thank you.
70TH ANNIVERSARY OF ST. IGNATIUS PARISH AND IGNITE PRAYER EXPERIENCE Tuesday, September 8th, at 6:30 pm we will have an IGNITE Prayer Experience as we celebrate the 70th anniversary
of our Parish, so please save the date! I pray that you all have a blessed and prayerful week. - Fr. Naveen

Download the NEW St. Ignatius ‘My Parish App’
At the beginning of July, St. Ignatius Parish launched our own app for iPhone
and Android smart phones! This will allow us to better communicate with
you throughout the week and keep you updated with relevant parish news or
updates.
The app is very well designed and very intuitive. It will be a great resource for
parishioners and it will allow us to send you useful and important messages
throughout the week regarding our parish life and events, and allow you to re-
ply to messages or RSVP for events.
There will be no need for parishioners with smart phones to remember to si-
lence their phones before Mass. The app will send you a reminder to silence
your phone 20 minutes before the Mass you select.
Many more great features will be a help to all of us, such as, daily Mass
readings, Catholic news, prayers and prayer reminders, quick access to online
tithing, Confession reminders, and our weekly bulletin.
So, if you haven’t already done so, please download the app by visiting
https://myparishapp.com/, or by using the QR code, or by searching for myparish on your phone's
app store. After downloading, search for SAINT IGNATIUS and stay connected with us all
week long! THANK YOU to all those who have already downloaded the app!
We hope for our new app to be a tool for fostering stronger Parish life at St. Ignatius Parish and
better engaging the New Evangelization!
If you have any questions about this exciting new app, please contact the Parish Office.

ST. IGNATIUS/DOROTHY RICE SCHOLARSHIP FUND — STARTING OUR 24TH YEAR ASSISTING FAMILIES WITH SCHOOL TUITION!
The St. Ignatius/Dorothy Rice Memorial Scholarship Fund assists families who are not able to
afford the full tuition at St. Ignatius School (which averages about $9500 per year). Each year we
help to keep children in our school who otherwise couldn’t afford a Catholic Education.
Over the past 23 years we have assisted more than 180 children from over 120 families!
The average child in this programme receives about $200-$300 per month off the fees, paid by the
scholarship fund (directly to the school bursar), while the child’s family pays the rest.
In return for the help, the families actively contribute to the school and parish in a variety of ways (helping out with
fundraisers, chaperoning school trips, cleaning the grounds, assisting at sports days, serving on committees, etc.).
How you can help:
On-line transfers can be done through Butterfield Bank… please e-mail [email protected] for details.
Donations can also be sent in by mail to PO Box 2638, Grand Cayman, KY1-1102. If paying by cheque, please
make your donations payable to: ST. IGNATIUS, and in the memo, please indicate “Scholarship Fund”.
Perhaps your company would like to assist with regular contributions OR a one-off donation?
Please consider the Scholarship Fund from time to time when doing your charitable work throughout the year!
Many thanks to all those who have contributed to the fund during recent months and during the past several years!
