Serve as breeding/sanctuaries and nursery grounds

of fishes and crustaceans including migratory birds

(Bani and Alaminos City)

The specialized roots (pneumatophores and

adventitious) can trap sedimentation carried by

runoffs from the upstreams thus minimizing erosion

along riverbanks and preventing offshore

sedimentation in seagrass beds and coralline areas

(Bolinao, Anda, Alaminos City, Agno, Bani, Infanta,

Dasol, Sual)

Importance of Mangrove

Page 10: State of the Mangroves: Pangasinan

Serve as barrier along the coastal residents during

storm surge and typhoons

Source of livelihood

Aquasilviculture (Bani, Anda, Alaminos City)

Nypa shingles, vinegar and wine making produced from

nypa (Bugallon)

Shell gathering (Bolinao, Anda, Alaminos City, Agno,

Dasol, Infanta)

Income (tourism – MPA Bani)

Importance of Mangrove

Help mitigate the effects of Climate Change

which is the most challenging problem of our

country today;

Legislation

• Provincial Environment Code of Pangasinan

• Unified Municipal Fishery Ordinance

• Resolution Bannin g the Cutting of Bantigui

Page 36: State of the Mangroves: Pangasinan

• Some valuable information gathered in Bolinao showed that fish/seashell catch in areas near mangrove sites reforested in 2008 has increased

• An indication that the habitat has been ecologically enhanced ending up to a higher income of fishermen in the locality.

• The continuous implementation of this reforestation project would definitely rehabilitate on a staggered basis the mangrove habitat as breeding and nursery of fishes.
