    U.S. Senate Majority Leader

    Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has

dropped his effort to pass a

    massive omnibus public lands

    bill that would have restricted

    responsible off-highway vehi-

    cle (OHV) access to thou-

sands of acres of public land.Reid introduced the legisla-

    tion, S. 303, the "America's

    Great Outdoors Act of 2010,"

on Friday, Dec. 17, as a sub-

    stitute to unrelated legislation

    titled the "Federal Financial

    Assistance Management Im-

    provement Act of 2009."

Reid's move was reminiscentof the controversial parlia-

    mentary tactic that anti-OHV

forces used in 2009 to close

    2.1 million acres of public

    land.

    "We are cautiously optimistic

that this latest effort to keep

the American public from re-sponsibly enjoying America's

    public lands has failed," said

    AMA Senior Vice President

    for Government Relations Ed

    Moreland. "AMA members

played no small role in this

    provisional success, and we

    thank our subscribers who re-

    sponded to AMA Action

    Alerts to oppose this pending

    legislation.

    "However, we must remain

    vigilant because Reid has in-

dicated a desire for a smaller

version of S. 303 prior to ad-

    journment," said Moreland.

    "The current session can pos-

    sibly run through Jan. 4,

    2011."

Reid's bill was a collection ofmore than 70 measures and

    more than 1,000 pages. Sena-

    tor James Inhofe (R-Okla.)

    was one of several senators

    who protested the legislation,

saying it was too sweeping to

consider prior to the end of

    the current session. In addi-

tion, key representatives inthe U.S. House of Represen-

    tatives, such as House Natural

    Resources Chairman-elect

    Doc Hastings (R-Wash.),

    voiced opposition to the

    measure.

    "We need to protect public

land for future generations, not from future generations,

    and that includes responsible

    OHV recreation access,"

    Moreland said. "In addition,

    legislation deserves a full and

    public debate on its merits,

    and parliamentary tricks and

    sleight-of-hand, such as what

we saw in 2009 and what

    we've experienced here, do

    not allow that."

On December 12, theRenegados MC held their

14th annual toy run tobenefit the Juarez Fire-

    fighter toy drive. Even in

    the middle of the current

    drug war that has ravaged

    their city, Juarez bikers

    came out by the hundreds

    to bring some Christmas

joy to the kids. Over 500motorcycles and even

    more bikers and biker sup-

    porters attended the run,

    giving thousands of toys.

    As Presidente Fox, leader

    of the Renegados said,

On this day, the war took

a back seat for this event

    where Juarez took care of

    Juarez.

    The Cuerpo de Bomberos

    de Juarez, the Juarez fire-

    fighters, has been collect-

    ing, cleaning, and

    distributing toys for the

kids of Juarez for 25 years.

This year, the firefighterswill be distributing more

    than 12,000 gift bags, each

containing up to 5 toys, to

    needy kids. According to

    Firefighter Captain Al-

    fredo Salas, the firefight-

    ers work all year long,

January to December, tocollect as many toys to

    give away at an annual

    event on the grounds of

    the Feria Expo. They hold

    several events throughout

    the year, mostly closer to

    Christmas, like this run

    and a lowrider car show

    on the same day. When

    asked if current events

    have made for fewer con-

    tributions, he said that

    people have actually re-

    sponded positively to their

    cause, maintaining similar

    numbers to prior years.

The people have even re-sponded to our request that

    no violent toys be do-

    nated. No toy guns,

    swords, or anything simi-

lar are being given to thekids.

The run began in the Au-

    toHotel Las Fuentes on

    Avenida Tecnologicowhere many MCs came

    together as friends. Cen-

    tauros Juarez, Dorados,

    Dragones, Gavilleros and

    many more were there

    united with the Renegados

in one of the biggest biker

    events of the year. There

was a metal band and per-

    formances from the Per-

    fect Moves dance studioproviding entertainment.

    When this reporter

    showed up, most of the

    groups were wary, of

    course. When I stated that

I was a reporter for an El

Paso magazine, I wasgreeted with some amaze-

    ment and great courtesy

    and enthusiasm. Presi-

    dente Fox stated that he

    understands the new

    found sentiments against

his city, but that I, and the

rest of El Paso, were bi-envenidos, welcome.

There are just a few indi-

    viduals causing all these

    problems, and unfortu-

    nately, they harm the rep-

utation of the city as a

    whole. The Renegados

    are thankful for all the

    bikers who came out that

    day and all the supporters

from both sides of the bor-der, like Old West Chop-

    pers and Bikers Custom

    who donated various

    products to use as raffle

    prizes.

    The bikers then paraded

through the city andwound up at the Renega-

    dos clubhouse in Barrio

    Azteca where Perfect

    Moves performed again

    and El Grupo La Noche

    played everything from

    current cumbia hits to

American classics likeCCRs Have you ever

    seen the rain. Bikes of

    every size and style lined

the street in front of the

    clubhouse. There were

    Harley Davidsons covered

in chrome and 30 year old

    Kawasaki choppers, cre-

    ated with hours of back-

    yard engineering. From

the most extravagant mod-ern Harley to the most

    humble rat bike, held to-

    gether by duct tape and

    baling wire, every bike

    and biker there was proud.

    Proud of their ride and

proud to band together forthis cause and their city.

    When asked about the

    days festivities, Ray-

    mond, from radio station

    Orbita 106.7FM, an-

    swered: In Juarez, there

    is everything. Everything

from the ugliest to themost beautiful. (Scanning

    the party) Here, you have

    the best of Juarez.

    Stripper from the Dora-

    dos de Villas MC, upon

hearing that I was from El

    Paso, stated how happy he

    was that an American

    and attempt to display

    positive events in his city.

    When asked what he

would tell our readership,he said, Juarez is not lost

or in a war as the media

tries to portray it. We still

    ride the same everyday, as

we always have.Indeed, in this southern

    barrio of Juarez, reputed

    to be particularly rough

    neighborhood in a violent

    city, reporters like myself

    and Raymond, officers

    from the Transito PoliceDepartment, firefighters

    and paramedics, and bik-

    ers from all over Juarez,

    including our gracious

    hosts, the Renegados MC,

    all came together and en-

    joyed the day in safety

and in a spirit of brother-hood befitting the season.

    keep in mind when

    searching for the best

    possible loan foryour financing

    needs.

    Interest Rate

    Finding a loan that

    will suite your fi-

    nancing needs is crit-

    ical, and one aspect

    of that process is the

    interest rate that you get

    with your loan. The basic

idea is that you want to get

    the lowest possible interest

rate so you pay less for the

loan in the long run. Theinterest rate that you get

    will depend on a number

    of factors, of which the

    most important factor

    being your credit score. If

you have a high creditscore, then you will most

    likely be rewarded with a

    lower interest rate. On the

flip side if you have a low

    credit score, your interest

rate might not be as low.

    Terms

    You'll want to discuss your

options as far as the terms

of your loan goes. If you

can afford to pay the loan

    off more quickly, then you

    should consider a short

loan term or period be-cause it will cost you less

when all is said in done.

    The faster you pay the

    loan off, the less interest

    you are going to pay.

    Loan Selection

    There are a number of

places where you can get a

    motorcycle loan, so it will

be in your best interest if

    you shop around for the

    lowest possible interest

    rates and the most attrac-

    tive loan terms that you

    can possibly get. The in-

    ternet is a great resource

that you can use to shop

    for motorcycle loans be-

    cause you have the ability

to compare a variety ofdifferent carriers so you

can see which one has the

    best loan package for you.

Fill a NeedPhotos and Story By Ricky J. Carrasco

    When Mickie Subia saw a

need for some Christmascheer in the neighborhood

    of Chihuahuita, firmly en-

    sconced in a small, almost

    forgotten corner of down-

    town El Paso, she decided

    to do something about it.

    First, in conjunction with

    Bea Barraza, a Special Edu-

    cation teacher from Bon-

    ham school, and then

    progressively with various

    individuals and organiza-

    tions like El Paso bikers,

    Marines Toys for Tots, and

    many others, Mickie and

her merry band of elves col-

    lect and distribute toys to

    the many children in need

in the barrio. This marks the

    26th straight year that toys,

    ice cream, balloon and

    Christmas cheer are given.

    Nobody just gave us toys

    when I was growing up,

and when I saw an opportu-

nity to do the same thing, I

decided to start it up here in

    Chihuahuita, says Mickie.

So now, in the last week of

    September, I start writing,

    by hand, my begging let-

    ters to various sponsors

    and anybody thatll help.

The drive needs a lot of

help as the event has grown

to pass out toys to more

    than 150 kids in Chi-

    huahuita. Around 20 volun-

teers set up tables, set up

    age groups, help in crowd

    control and pass out ice

    cream, balloons and what-

    ever else that is donated.

    The kids are not particular

    about size or anything. Usu-

ally, they get just what they

    want, and theyre very

    happy to get whatever they

get. One year, I had a vol-

unteer that tried to get the

    kid a huge stuffed animal,

    and all he really wanted

was just a little toy truck.

    Parents are not allowed to

pick toys for the kids. We

just need the kids to be sat-

    isfied and smiling.

    The December bike run has

Mickie, Biker Santa, and Santas Elf ready to ride.

been a part of the donation

    events since the beginning.

    When I first started, there

were only 8 bikes. Not a

lot of toys that first year. But the Marines saved it

    for me with added dona-

    tions. This year, more than

    70 bikes participated on

    the Friday morning run.

    Meeting first at Cocos

    restaurant on North Loop,

the ride proceeds to CieloVista, MacArthur, Ross,

    and Hillside schools to

    collect toys. Students are

    encouraged to donate toys

    to other kids less fortunate

than themselves. When therumble of the riders can be

    heard, the kids at each

    school beamed and

    cheered with excitement.

Each school lets out a por-

    tion of their students

    to meet the bikers.

When Bea Barrazaand I started the bike

    run and toy donation,

    we would go to her

    school and her stu-

    dents would come out

    to greet the bikers,

and would be extraexcited for our Biker

    Santa.On December 18th,

    Mickie held the distribu-

    tion event at her own

    home. Her garage, that

    holds the collection of

    toys, piled

    to the ceil-

    ing, servesas the back-

    drop to the

    event. Kids

    lined up and

    down the

    block to re-

    ceive toys,ice cream,

    and sit on Santas lap.

    Mickie finds the children

earlier in the year by going

    around the neighborhood

knocking on doors to seewhere the kids are. That

first year, I had a lot of

    slammed doors and people

    asking what I wanted.

Since then, her toy drive is

    a happy annual tradition in

    Chihuahuita with many

    bikers and organizationscontributing for Christ-

mas. Just to see the look

on the kids faces makes all

    the work worthwhile.

Jan 2011 Sun City Biker 19

Speed. The word speedmeans something different

    to many people; it means

    the distance traveled by an

    object divided by its dura-

tion of the interval, to oth-

    ers it means going really

fast! What good does thatdo if you cant look good

    doing it though? Dont

    have $50,000 for the

    newest, hottest sports car?

    Well speed comes in dif-

    ferent shapes and sizes,

    sport bikes for example

are a great, cost effectiveway to go fast and look

    good doing it. There are

    many bike manufacturers

    that make these beastly

    machines. Asian and Euro-

    pean manufacturers such

    as Kawasaki, Suzuki,Yamaha, Ducati and

    Aprilia, produce these race

    ready machines, for almost

every taste. Local sportbike rider, Jose Martinez,

    is one fearless speed en-

    thusiast and owner of an

    attractive 2007 Yamaha

    YZF R6.

    From the factory, these so-

    called crotch rockets,

    pack a punch. The high-

    light of these motorcycles

    is acceleration, speed,

    braking, and agile maneu-

    verability. Most impor-

tantly, they can be used for

    any type of paved high-

way. These important fac-tors compromise comfort

    and fuel economy, com-

    pared to other types of

    motorcycles. Martinez

says, I love that I can

    drive 200 miles on only

    ten dollars worth of gas,

in an economy with highgas prices, thats not bad,

    especially for a bike that

    will redline at 17500 rpm.

    Certain design elementson these two-wheeled

    rockets lie in their high-

    performance engines barri-

    caded within a light

    weight frame. Engines

    range from 500cc which is

    entry level power, to

    1000cc, a so-called super

    bike. The difference is

    about 200 horsepower or

more at the crank in the

    1000cc! These two key

    components help maintain

    chassis rigidity and struc-

tural integrity; making yougo fast without having the

    bike fall apart from right

    under you. Other key

    components, such as the

    braking system, provide

    safe stopping for these

    high speed monsters. Built

with high performancebrake pads, multi piston

    calipers clamped to over

    size vented rotors, are a

    must. Their advanced sus-

    pension systems provide a

    great amount of stability,

    adjustability and durabil-

    ity; enabling the rider to

    conquer those twisty back

    roads with ease.

Why a sport bike over a

cruiser? On a sport bikeyou are lunged forward

    over the gas tank, with

    your legs positioned high

    on the bike, unlike cruisers

    where you sit comfortably

    upright. This crouched po-

sition is key in riding these

motorcycles, it helps movethe center of gravity on the

    bike forward so at high

    speeds it will support the

    weight of the rider com-

    fortably. The riders legs

    are positioned high for

    ground clearance when

    cornering, whereas leg po-

    sitioning on a cruiser bike

is only a few inches above

    the ground.

    Whether youre having

that itch for driving at high

    speeds or just looking for

    a Superman-like adrena-line rush, a sport bike may

be right up your alley. Not

    only are they designed to

go fast, but they also are

    aesthetically pleasing.

    Martinez could not have

    said it better when asked,

Why a sport bike? Itsjust fun and the ladies

    love it!

    By: Ricky Lee

If you want speed in your

    life then go for sports

    bikes. However, not only

these bikes are known forspeed but also for excel-

    lent acceleration, maneu-

    verability and

    deceleration. Before you

go and buy a sports bike

    here are some things that

    you should know aboutthese bikes.

    Features of sports bikes

In sports bikes you get a

    powerful engine for help-

ing you drive faster and a

light body which is easy tocontrol

    The braking system of the

    sports bikes have both

    brake pads and multi-pis-

    ton calipers and each are

    clamped into rotors

    Advanced adjustment sys-

tem and materials arefound in suspension so

    that both stability and

    durability can be achieved

The tiers in front and rear

    are larger and wider than

    the other motorcycles so

that you can get morespeed and good angles.

    If fairings are used in

    sports bikes then they are

    shaped in such a manner

    that the aerodynamic drag

is reduced to a large extent

    There are various types of

    sports bikes available in

    the market and these are:

    Entry level: These are for

    those who want to practice

before riding on an excel-lent sports bike. These are

24 Sun City Biker Jan 2011

    By: Sean Carter |

    Harley Davidson today is

    the most respected sought

    after motorcycle in the

    world. Other manufacturers

    have been trying to imitate

    their models for decades.

    They say imitation is the

greatest form of flattery. That is not why the compe-

tition does it though. It is

    simply an effort to steal

    market share. The foreign

    motorcycle manufacturers

are trying to copy a US

    manufacturer is kind of

ironic if you think about it.That is not exactly the case

in the car market and as of

    lately the truck market too.

The Americans are chasingthe foreign automakers in

    about every category.

    Harley Davidson builds a

    fine motorcycle but the

truth of the matter is that it

is not that much better me-

chanically than a compara-ble foreign motorcycle. In

    fact, some would even tell

you that it is not as reli-

    able or built as

    well. I am not

    going to get

    into that de-

    bate. While theother manufacturers

    have done a good

    job of copying the

    look of the bike they

    can never replicate the

    sound! They also don't un-

    derstand that what makes a

Harley is not just the de-sign. It has everything to

do with the image. If you

    ask most people over the

age of 30 what their fa-vorite motorcycle is and

    they would tell you,

    "Harley". Many of them

    buy apparel with the logo

on it even though they don't

own one. They will tell you

    that they will have one

someday though. HarleyDavidson has done a fantas-

    tic job of branding their

    product. They have

    created not only a

    product but also

    an image.

    When a person

    buys their firstHarley they imme-

    diately purchase an

    array of apparel and

    accessories to go

with it. They join a social

    class of proud Harley rid-

ers. They did not just buy a

Motorcycle, they bought animage that and they are all

to eager to live up to it.

    Harley Davidson is the ulti-

mate "Brand". It's namerepresents high end quality

    and portrays masculinity,

    power and the ultimate

    "cool".

    Did the marketers at

    Harley Davidson do this on

purpose, or was it just dumbluck. After all, many peo-

    ple remember the late 70's

    early 80's when you could

    not give a Harley Davidson

    away. People also may re-

    member when there were 3

    year waiting lists for about

every model just a decadeor so later. An owner of a

    local franchise told me once

    that the mentality of Harley

    Davidson was "Enough

    Harley Davidson's is one

    too many". That comment

    made sense to me because

of what I learned in eco-nomics about supply and

    What MakesHarley DavidsonDifferent

    pply and demand, the lower

    the supply the higher the

it. Price on the bike was

    not negotiable at that time

Even after 8 years I still

was able to get a couple

    the supply the higher the

    demand. The Harley

    Davidson brand image ben-

    efited greatly from that de-

    mand. Whether it was

intentional or by accident Idon't know but it worked.

    The US car makers could

    probably benefit from a

    marketing strategy closer to

that of Harly's. The US car

    makers have done just the

    opposite over the last

decade. They pumped outunits and sponsored numer-

    ous rebate/financing pro-

    grams that "Cheapened" the

image of the car or truck.

    Even though there are

    plenty of Harley's to be

    bought on showroom floors

today you don't see 0% fi-

    nancing for 72 months +

    $4000 cash back. Cus-

    tomers find out quickly that

    every dime they save on

    those kinds of programs

they also give up on resale

value later on. There is not

    the same desperation feel in

    the Harley Davidson mar-

    keting campaigns.

I was in the car business

    when I bought my first

    Harley, a New 1998 Softail

    Custom demo with 1700

miles on it. It was kind of

difficult for me to pay full

    MSRP for a demo with

miles on it, after all, in my

    business we had to give

    every vehicle away to sell

    not negotiable at that time

but I was welcome to put

my name on a list for one

with no miles. I opted to

    drive that one home instead

of waiting possibly years toget another. I did not feel

    taken advantage of or

    cheated. I bought into the

    hype and felt pretty lucky

    and proud of my new/used

bike. I realized that while I

may have paid too much by

my "car business" standardsit was really all relative.

    The Harley was actually

    worth more than I paid

when I drove it home. I

    know because I had offers.

was able to get a couple

    thousand less than I paid

    originally for it.

    Harley Davidson is truly a

success story in marketing, engineering, and branding.

I love mine and would not

own anything else. I am on

my eighth one now and will

    probably own many more in

    the future.
