The attacks on September 11, 2001, and the ensuingwars, caused many to re-member the lives of thou-sands of military

personnel that serve anddie in defense of the USand its people. On Sep-tember 11, 2010, the NewMexico 1 Chapter of Rolling Thunder organizeda charity ride to remember those soldiers, past and

present, that were impris-oned, killed, or are miss-ing in action. Riders fromEl Paso, Las Cruces,Alamogordo and as far asAlbuquerque, New Mex-ico, came together tohonor POW/MIAs in a

300 mile tour.Rolling Thunder, Inc. is anational organization thatsupports veterans withvarious forms of financialaid, family support, andservices. It also works toimprove legis-lation to the POW/MIAsituation and improve vet-erans' benefits. The NewMexico 1 chapter, char-

tered in 2005, specificallyworks to help support theVeterans home in Truth or Consequences, New Mex-ico, the only one of its

kind in the state. This rideis its sole fundraiser for the year.Saturdays ride had threestart bases, including Bar-netts Harley-Davidsonhere in El Paso and rodethrough Las Cruces and

ended with over 200 ridersat a memorial service atVietnam War Memorialreproduction in Truth or Consequences. Manyother Veteran rider groupslike the Combat Vets As-sociation and the Buf-

O n August 28 and 29, theMad Hatters MC organ-ized a weekend of activi-ties to help support kidswith cancer. Saturday fea-tured a poker run that fea-tured stops at Hooters, theCockpit, but the most spe-

cial was the stop at Provi-dence Hospital to visit the pediatric oncology unit.Several kids were able tocome out to greet the bik-ers and see the many mo-torcycles that rumbled by

the normally quiet hospi-tal. The most personal day, though, was Saturdays

blood run in United BloodServices at Barnett Harley-Davidson. The drive

proved to be very success-ful. According to LuannWieland at UBS, morethan 114 units were col-lected in one day, about25% more than the pro-

jected goal. This included17 double donations thatinvolves a special machinethat takes out 2 pints inabout 30-40 minutes. Anormal donation is a single

pint of blood that takesabout 15-20 minutes. Wehad two buses (collectiontrucks) running at capac-ity. We could have easilyused a third. By 5pm, westarted running out of sup-

plies! El Paso bikers def-initely showed their hearts

    because a similar run

could collect 80 units on a

good day.Blood donations are alarge part of the healing

process for any severetrauma, like auto colli-sions. For this run, it alsoraised awareness thatmany illnesses and condi-tions, like cancer require

blood transfusions. AsJosefina Remes, blood do-nation technician at theZaragosa UBS office, states, It can provide akick start to the system of a sick person. Remes

states that both of her par-ents have been in the hos- pital for various reasonsand they have been saved

by blood transfusions.Cancer patients, in partic-ular, are very much inneed of blood transfusions

and especially platelets for their recovery. Blood platelets help to restoreclotting and immune fac-

    tors in patients that are

weakened by chemother-apy and radiation treat-ments. A platelet donationtypically takes 2 hours andcan help various patients. This length of time, alongwith the needles, typicallyscares off many peoplewho might normally bewilling to help. Thank-fully, the Mad Hatters MC

and many, many El Paso bikers proved that riders

are willing to put up with alittle temporary sting inthe arm to help out kids inneed.

W hat does it mean tohave a support system? Tohave people you can counton to lift you when you aredown, to give you strengthwhen you are weak? To

Joe B., a prospect withSurvivors MC El Paso, itmeans the difference be-tween possibly living anddying. Joes story reflectsmany of those of the Sur-vivors, whose motto isClean and Sober.

I grew up with drugs andalcohol. I used them as anoutlet, to get away fromeverything that I thoughtwas wrong in my life, butthey did nothing but causemore problems. Joe, 35,tells his story with thematter-of-factness of aman that has faced hisdemons. He is not

ashamed of his past.Rather, he is proud of thechange to which he hascommitted himself. Istarted smoking when Iwas 12. I just didnt know

how to say no. He contin-ued his self-destructive be-havior until his wifechallenged him when hewas nearing 30. She toldhim those with alcohol anddrug abuse problems findit much harder to quit after

age 30. That caused someresolve in his decision. Heis now celebrating 5 yearsof being Clean and Sober.I realized the problemwas not with the drugs, itwas within me. But heobviously didnt do it by

himself. Joe had the sup- port of his wife, and nowthe biker community, es-

    pecially in Survivors MC.

In the biker community, Ifound acceptance and be-longing that had beenmissing before. It em-

braced me and I cherishthat. I know that I am notalone.Dimple, Survivor Presi-

dent, started the club for that kind of camaraderie. We all were in drug/alco-hol recovery. We love mo-torcycles and we decidedto ride together. Clean

and sober now for 19years, Dimple says theclub, the ride, and mostimportantly, sobriety has

been very important in hislife. Its been somethingthat has brought us to-gether as a family. Mydaughters, grandsons andgreat grandson were allhelping out at the run,

being together as a fam-ily.Survivors MC, one of theoldest continually runningclubs in El Paso, make it

their mission to not leavetheir brothers behind. They current host an AAmeeting at the Al-AnoClub at the corner of Mon-tana and McCrae. TheB.A.D.D. (Bikers AgainstDrunk Driving) poker run,now celebrating its 18th

year, is one of the oldest inEl Paso and proceeds go to building an alcohol anddrug rehab facility here inEl Paso. This years runwas scenic and familyfriendly and included run

stops at Leos and Rudysrestaurants, the top of Transmountain, and finallya barbeque at Album Park.According to Dimple, Sur-

vivors MC El Paso Presi-dent since 1995, more than100 riders were registeredfor this run that raisedover $4000 to help out arecovery home to be run

T o many queries aremade and we need real an-swers. In motorcycles, overwhelming questionsare given especiallyon motorcycle parts. Onemotorcycle part that needselucidation is tire.

Here are few of the fre-quently asked questionsabout tires:

    1. Why are new tires bet-ter?First, new tires are better

because it is organic and itdecomposes. Second be-cause the older the tiregets, the more itis exposed to outgassing.Outgassing makes the tire

brittle.2. Whats the right tireage? In essence, the principle isthe newer the tire the bet-ter. However, to make atire last longer the tiresage is of lesser importance. But be careful

not to buy tires which areover six or seven yearsold. You will be able toknow their date of manufacturing by search-ing for the three or four-digit number stamped in

the tires sidewall. For in-stance, 2101 standsfor 21st week of 2001 -which is its manufacturingdate.3. What are size andpressure?Run the bike in the recom-mended tire pressure. It isso simple. You just have tostick to the manufacturersguidelines. That is the safest and the

best thing that you can do. Nevertheless, you canhave some deviations de-

pending on your desired performance. Moreover, you have tocheck tire pressure regu-larly.4. What will I do in caseof a flat tire?Motorcycle tires swervefrom more directions. Un-like car tires, motorcycletire has only the other tireto prevent it fromfalling. Thus, the bestthing to do in case of a flattire is to replace it and not

just plug it.5. When is there a needfor replacement? It depends. Front tires maystill shot even when there

is still ample rubber. Infact, they may still look good even if theyhave gone through consid-erable heat cycles. Theycan also cup or scallopwhen already having un-

even surface. Thisis the best time to replacethem.6. When to buy a tire?Buying tires must be madeat reputable motorcyclestores. These stores havealready established their names andservices. You can alsoorder online. But this rem-

edy is a gamble because itwill not guarantee that youwill be gettingnewly manufactured tires. When you buy tires per-sonally, you have the op-

    portunity to choose the

freshest tire in thestore. You also have thechance to compare pricesand quality.About The Author:Please visit MotorcycleParts OEM site athttp://www.motorcy-clepartsbin.com for comments and inquiriesregarding this article.

"You can never be too paranoid". That sums it upwhen talking about some-

one wanting to relieve youof your hard

earned Harley Davidsonmotorcycle.Bike thieves have nothing

but time and imaginationwhen it comes to stealing

bikes. It is up to you toknow how

bikes are stolen and whatyou can do to prevent it.Most bike thefts occur after hours under the cover of darkness. The vast ma-

jority of bikes are simplyrolled away out of sight into a waiting truck.

A locked up front forksand a lock on the front

wheel can help to preventthis type of theft. In the past, some thieveshave used devices likeskateboards under thefront wheel in order tomove the bike where

they want. In reality, four strong men can pick up a

bike up off the ground andtoss it into the back of a

pickup in mereseconds.High quality chain or cable can be used to an-

chor your bike to a power pole or even to other

bikes. This method can be effective to the thief who wants a clean andquick getaway. It takes a

bit more time to use a bolt cutter or chain

cutter can to slicethrough these devices. An audible alarm cansignal you and othersnearby when your bike

becomes disturbed. Thistype of device can bevery effective. Some of these alarms will evencall your pager or tele-

phone when your bikehas moved. These de-vicesare generally more effec-tive to prevent nightthefts. The bottom line is if somebody wants to steal

your Harley Davidson mo-torcycle, somehow or someway it will likelyhappen no matter what

prevention measures youtake. No one special hasdesigned these theft pre-

vention devices.Professional thieves al-ways have a way of get-ting around them. The idea behind all thesesecurity gadgets is only todeter the would be crimi-nals and send them to

down the streetlooking for easier prey. All or a few of these secu-rity devices I talked aboutused in combination can

be very effective in pre-venting motorcycletheft!

I guess if all else fails, youcan always bring your bikewith you in your bedroomat night.About The Author:Keith Nivon is an avidHarley Davidson Motorcy-cle Enthusiast! By: John DanieleTheyve been glamorizedin the movies and on tele-vision by the likes of everyone from JamesDean to Peter Fonda inmovies like Easy Rider and The Wild Ones.

For years, theyve repre-sented freedom on theopen road to several gen-erations of Americans, butthere are still thoseof us who dont knowmuch about motorcycles

    but would like to. Still,

theres one thing thatsundeniable. Themotorcycle is part of theAmerican way of life.First the basics: What ac-tually makes up whatmany enthusiasts refer toas the Iron Horse? Like

many other mechanized things today, most modern motorcyclesare mass-produced usingaluminum for the frames.Motorcycleengines are gasoline pow-ered and usually have afive or six speed transmis-sion. While many of us arefamiliar withthe North American madeHarley Davidson, there areother manufacturers fromvarious countries who selltheir motorcycles in NorthAmerica as well as worldwide. Some well knowJapanese makers are

Honda and Yamaha brandmotorcycles.Although there are motor-cycles for every walk of life and need, from Japan-ese made commuter bikesto the racingmachines that come

equipped with windscreens to cut down on air

resistance, its the HarleyDavidson motorcyclethat has become a house-hold name.Harley Davidson, the mostfamous bike in the worldof motorcycles, wasstarted in Milwaukee in1903. By 1917 onethird of all Harleys builtwere sent overseas to helpwith the war effort. By1918, Harley Davison hadthe biggestmotorcycle factory in theworld. But the history of one of Americas favorite

    pastimes goes back evenfurther.

It is generally acceptedthat the very first motorcy-cle was a two cylinder steam engine variety in-vented in 1867. Thefirst record of any type of motorcycle goes back to1885, with an engine that

was attached to a wooden bike by a man

named Gottlieb Daimler.Like many other indus-tries, the history of themotorcycle is divided intoclear divisions or time seg-ments. The nextnotable era is the time be-tween 1955 and 1985 thatwas characterized by someof the other big names inmotorcyclehistory such as the Indian.Even though the Beatleswerent about to invadeAmerican shores with their

brand of British music for another tenyears, the English Indianmotorcycle was

out selling the Americancompetition in the 1950s.Another big name thatmade its appearance in the

pre-Japanese era of motor-cycle production is Nor-ton.At one point in time, the

Norton motorcycle gavethe bigger names likeHarley Davidson a run for their money in themotorcycle subculture. If youre wanting to getstarted riding, youll needto obtain a motorcycle li-

cense. While the require-ments for amotorcycle license varyfrom state to state, thereare generally some ac-cepted prerequisites thatdont change. Moststates require a commer-

cial drivers license beforethey will allow an appli-cant to start the procedurefor getting amotorcycle license. Also, a

person will usually need to pay related fees and taketests that vary from state tostate.About The Author:John Daniele is an experton motorcycle helmets. For information or to pur-chase a handcrafted, light-weight, fiberglassnovelty motorcycle hel-mets see http://www.hel-metsrus.com

By: John W DanieleYears ago, when a largegroup of motorcycle ridersrode into town, the localshad reason to fear thatsomething wicked hadcome their way. It was as-sumed that a big bunch of

guys on bikes were a gang,an assembly of societysrebels who scoffed at thelaw and ran roughshodwherever they wandered. That bad rap was rein-forced by equally bad

    press. Headlines about

    bikers causing mayhem

were consistentlyfront-page. When a gangwearing one distinctivemotorcycle jacket invadedanother gangs space,

brawls would break out in the bars and other

    places where they gath-

ered.Hollywood features aboutfictitious, scurrilous char-acters on two wheels whoterrorized towns were boxoffice bonanzas. Althoughmost real-life dudes inleather duds were more

bark and less bite, it took many years for the bad-boy stereotypedimage to fade away.Todays motorcycle en-thusiasts who want to gettogether with other like-minded individuals arenot running from thelaw. As a matter of fact, many riders who chooseto wear the motorcycle

jacket that showcases thename of their biker association are cops andattorneys. The thrill thatthese and other bikers areseeking is not to scare or harm people and property;they are hitting the rode

just to enjoy the ride andto do good deeds.Fund raising and organiz-ing charity events are onthe agenda for the currentcrop of biker guys and

    babes.

    Associations have popped

up all over North Americaand are organized by state,

province, motorcycle brand, profession, regionor religious affiliation. Some exhibit a keen senseof fun, and focus in on a

    particular type of biker,

like the Bald Guys Motor-cycle Club. There are over 200 chapters of these fol-licly challenged bikersaround the globe.

Christian motorcycle min-istries spread the gospelacross the continent. Withcreative names like Chari-ots of Hope,Cycle Disciples and KingsHorsemen, these believersdedicate much of their time to helping those inneed.Jewish biker groups havealso sprung up. They have outings thatmight start with a meetup at a bagel shop and endup with a ride to raisemoney for the DiabetesAssociation or another worthy cause. How do biker groups get

the money to give to chari-ties? The methods aremany. They sell raffles, have barbecuesand clambakes and holdcar washes, to name just afew. These macho menand biker babes oftenshow their softer side when they have a

benchmark motorcycles of all time the OHV 61-cubic-inch EL. This beau-tifully styled bike isaffectionately known asthe Knucklehead. What'struly amazing about this

bike is the design of thetransmission, which re-mained in service until

1986 an incrediblehalf-century run with thesame basic configuration.

There were, of course, dif-ferent variationsavailablein the early years, like thestandard 4-speed, a 3-speed with reverse for sidecar use, and hand shiftor foot shift. The originaldesign was extremely bul-letproof. Knuckles andPans shared the sameouter case. The only ex-ception was the introduc-tion of the electric startwith the 1965 Pan. The

transmission case grew acouple of ears to supportthe new aluminum inner

primary to which the elec-tric start was bolted, andthe main shaft in the trans-mission got a quarter-inchinch longer to accommo-date these new goodies.Things prettymuch re-mained thesame untilthe intro-

duction of the alternator.Adding an alternator af-fected the transmission. The primary had to bemoved out to accommo-date the alternator. As a re-sult, the main shaft grewagain.Continues on next

These minor changes wenton until the demise of the4-speed in 1986. The

biggest complaint aboutthe 4-speed was universalthroughout the years most everybody thought

    the bike needed another gear.

In 1980, Harley in-troduced the FLT seriesmotorcycle, a fairly revo-lutionary bike in Harleyhistory. A rubber-mounted

engine with a 5-speedgearbox was the major de-sign change. For manyyears, riders thought anadditional gear in thetransmission would beideal. Harley listened, butwhat many riders didn't

understand is that the finaldrive ratio of the 4-speedand the 5-speed was thesame 1 to 1. Many erro-neously believed that the5th gear was an overdrive. The lower gear ratios in1st, 2nd,&

    3rd allowed the engineers

to raise the overall gear ratio to achieve thesame off-the-line per-formance with ahigher top speed.

    Today's higher road speeds have

prompted requests for yetanother gear. Harley intro-duced its 6-speed cruisedrive transmission in2006. The changes in theoverall gear ratio are whatmade this unit a positiveupgrade to the Harley

gearbox. However, it's notas refined as some of theaftermarket transmissionsthat are available today.Baker, Jim's Machine,RevTech and MilwaukeeTwins all produce over-

    drive gearboxes.

    Thesenew transmis-

sions feature a highgear that is .86 to 1 or .80to 1 less than the stock 1 to 1, resulting in a reduc-tion in engine rpm at agiven speed, or a faster speed at the same rpm.For example, a mid-'90sHarley Softail would havean overall ratio of 3.36 to1. This is determined bythe number of teeth oneach of the gears or pul-leys in the primary driveand the secondary drive.

The problem with anyoverdrive type system is

that if you slow downtoo much in thatoverdrive gear, theengine can

    lug whenyou attempt to accelerate.

This can be detrimental tothe engine. The solutionwould be to downshift toaccelerate.

An alternative to addingan overdrive is to changethe overall ratio of the

bike to reduce engine rpmat a given speed. Whenmotorcycles had a chaindrive secondary, this wasvery easy to do. Chains areeasy to obtain in variouslengths to accommodatethe differences a larger or smaller sprocket would re-quire. With the advent of the belt secondary, thingsgot more complicated.

Due to the fact that beltsare fixed in application wehave some serious limita-tions in what we can do,not to mention removaland reinstallation of all thecomponents.

Imagine you have just bought a brand newHonda CBR Fireblade, it'syour baby and you treas-ure it more than any of your other possessions. The last thing you want isfor something to go wrongand to find yourself searching Google for honda motorcycle parts, honda motorcycle sparesor even honda motorcycledealers within a year of

    purchasing your bike.

This is something that caneasily happen though if you do not properly main-

tain and look after your bike. So many new motor-cycle owners forget thesimple steps which theyshould take daily to look after their new motorcycle.

This is a list of three sim- ple daily checks whichwill prolong the life of your treasured motorcycleand ensure that it is a longtime before you have tospend money on repairs.

    The first is to

    check oil levels.

Checking the oil level on a bike is very simple, either your bike will have a tra-ditional dip-stick just like

on a car or an oil inspec-tion window. Oil is some-thing that should not bedecreasing in volume tooregularly and if you findthat the oil level in your

bike is dropping rapidly itcould indicate a couple of

problems. Your bike couldhave a simple oil leak or itcould have engine prob-lems. An engine in goodcondition will not use verymuch oil between changes.

Remember that your bikeshould be level to theground when you arechecking the oil so that theoil can stabilise and bemeasured accurately.

The second checkis the motorcyclesbrakes. This is a veryimportant check for boththe maintenance of the

bike and the rider's safety.Break checks are simple todo, just apply the brakesand ensure that they arefully applied without thelever or pedal being fully

applied. Also the breaksshould free up fully with-

out any drag once thelever or pedal is released.

Once this check has beenmade you should check the brake fluid level and if it is low replace it immedi-ately. If your brake fluid

continues to drop or your brakes do not appear to beworking properly takeyour bike to a mechanic or the deal you purchased itfrom before riding it

    again.

The third and finalcheck to do before takingyour bike out each day ismaking sure the drive

chain is in goodcondition. The drive

chain should be well lubri-cated and should not betoo slack looking. This is amajor component on themotorcycle and it is vitalthat it is kept in good con-dition. If the chain looks alittle dry the spray it withsome aerosol chain lubri-cant and if it appears slack either adjust the tensionyourself or pay a profes-sional to do so.

By following these simpledaily checks you will en-sure firstly that your bikeis safe to ride but also thatyour bikes performancewill be optimal.

As some of the Last of theMotohicans, every year wetry to plot a differentcourse for our annual two-wheeled pilgrimage to"Sturgis". Our motorcycletouring itinerary for 2010was to cover a distance of 3,055 miles over 7 days.

We covered the first 1,515miles--from Miami BeachFlorida to Wichita FallsTexas--in under 36 hours.

That should earn me my51st Iron Butt cert, and

bought us the time weneeded to relax the paceand take in the sceneryover the remaining 5 days. Those last 1,540 milestook us west acrossstretches of old Route 66in Texas and New Mexico,

then north through thehigh peaks and narrowvalleys of the southwest-ern Colorado Rockies, and

finally northeast acrossWyoming to Sundance, our base for this year's"Black Hills Trailer Clas-sic": http://tinyurl.com/wi-chitafalls2sundance After a sunny Monday morn-ing's coffee and cold egg

breakfast at the WichitaFalls La Quinta, weheaded northwest throughthe Red River Valley onUS 287 where it parallelsthe famous river's courseand Texas-Oklahoma bor-der. We made our first stop

just shy of the Panhandleat a crossroads named for Quanah Parker, the "half-

breed" Indian and last Co-manche chief who--givenhe sired 25 children withhis 5 wives--might verywell have been its found-ing father. We then fol-lowed 287 on across the

High Plains of the Pan-handle through smalltowns lost in time that re-minded me of "The Last

Picture Show" until wereached Amarillo. Fromthere we headed west pastthe Big Texan Steakhouseon I-40 and old Route 66,stopping for lunch and lotsof iced tea at the Route 66Midpoint Cafe in Adrian, where the food is just asgood and the people are

just as friendly as their website suggests:http://www.mid-

pointroute66cafe.com Ashort ride west fromAdrian took us across the

state line into the Moun-tain Time Zone and theMesalands of New Mex-ico. The landscape transi-tion there from the endlessflat grasslands of the HighPlains to the flat-topped
