hotos and story by
Ricky J. Carrasco
If you ever meet Debra Ruz atne of her events for Reach for a
tar, you'll be struck with her en-
rgy. She will go on for as long
ou'll listen about the child she is
rying to help, about how her or-
anization is trying to help them, bout her volunteers, about
whomever or whatever group or
usiness is making the wish possi-
le. The last thing she will talk
bout is herself.
n fact, when we met for this in-
erview, she arrived confused. "I
on't know why you'd want to
write about me, I'm the most bor-
ng person!" Far from it, this self-
rofessed biker grandma who
pends what little personal timehe has on her Harley Knightster,
s also the private duty director of
he Visiting Nurses Association
nd has been the president of
Reach for a Star for the last three
ears. And, if she gives of her
me, as she puts it, it's because
thers believed in her. "I started
ut as a switchboard operator,
hen, someone took a chance on
me. I became a social work assis-
ant and I kept working my way
p. I fell in love with helping fam-ies get on their path." Ruz was-
't able to go to college, so all her
kills were learned on-the-job.
he went through a few other jobs
ntil she got to her current posi-
on of private duty director of
VNA. Even while talking about
er, she attempted to deflect the
uestions to talk about those that
ave taught her along the way.
Eleanor Copeland: I credit her
with pushing me to do what I can.
She taught me that if I can't go in
the front door, try another ap-
proach. She taught me that you
CAN help everyone. I'm blessed
that I am able to help."
In the late 90s, Ruz became in-
volved with Reach for a Star, a
non-profit organization that grants
wishes to local critically ill chil-
dren. She has been the presidentfor the last two years overseeing
around 20 volunteers. "The
minute you grant your first wish,
you're hooked. The kids humble
me and it puts my life into per-
spective. There's a misconception
that these kids will ask for every-
thing, and they simply won't.
Often I have to work with them to
ask for anything!"
We talked about Angel, a boy who
had been in the hospital for mostof his 7 years and who only re-
cently passed away. Back in April,
his family knew he had maybe
weeks to live. "When I met Angel,
I thought he was knocking on
God's door. DKD Realty and the
Mission Riders MC and other
groups came together to grant his
wishes (riding a Harley, owning
an XBox, and meeting wrestler
Sin Cara). I believe in my heart
that he lived an extra 10 months
because he met those people andthey kept up with him.
She has often called upon local
groups like bikers and lowrider
clubs to grant wishes, having
worked with them since the 90s.
"There's never been any club that
has not come through with a kid's
wish, none. To me, bikers are the
sweetest people; the tougher they
appear, the sweeter they are. I am
moving more to becoming a men-
tor to clubs like the Mission Rid-ers, the Traviesos, the Centauros
and many others in order to grant
wishes and follow up with the
kids." Gil and Suky and the rest
of the Mission Riders followed up
with Angel on more than a weekly
basis, even being present for
Angel's funeral in early January.
"Angel made it for one more
Christmas and it was very much
due to their work."

We are coming off a decenttart to the New Year as far asrecipitation. Our numbers areunning just a bit above normalor this time of year. But, don'tet too excited as the three
month outlook is rather grim.
The forecast for the next threemonths across El Paso and LasCruces does not look good ifou want rain or snow.
The Climate Prediction Centers showing that our area willkely see above normal tem-
peratures and below normalrain and snowfall for February,March and April. Combine thisforecast with our area drought.
The U.S. Drought Monitor re-ports that we are still in a se-vere drought across El Paso
and Las Cruces. If the outlookverifies, then early 2012 could
be similar to the start of both2012 and 2011 when La Ninawas in place and our weatherwas generally dry and mild(with the exception of the arc-tic outbreak of the first fewdays of February 2011).
Note:
A = Above Normal
B = Below Normal
EC = Equal chance of seeingnormal, above normal or belownormal temps or

ered Mo-torcycleTrade-ins
Zero Motorcycles, the globalleader in the electric motorcycle

trade value on top of whatever
amount the dealer offers the con-sumer available towards the pur-
chase price of a new 2012 Zero

sented in addition to the recently
announced 10 percent federal tax
credit available as part of the
American Taxpayer Relief Act, of-
fering up to an additional $2,500
in incentives for new Zero Motor-
cycle consumers.
"Similar to the 'cash for clunkers'
government promotion in 2009,Zero aims to entice traditional in-
ternal combustion engine motor-
cycle owners to make the switch
to electric," said Scot Harden ,
Vice President of Global Market-
ing for Zero Motorcycles. "In of-
fering a $2,500 trade in bonus for
new customers, we expect this
promotion to be a great sales tool
for our nationwide dealer net-
work."
In addition to the $2,500 trade
bonus and federal tax credits, Zero
customers can also take advantageof Zero Motorcycles financing.
Current financing options offer no
down payment and 0 percent inter-

Make SureYour NewMotorcycleHelmet Fits
You RightHere's HowBy: Brian R. Salisbury
he key to knowing your motorcy-
le helmet fits properly is to make
ure it feels snug and solid but not
ncomfortable.
f your helmet is loose, it could
ome off or twist around on your
ead in a serious crash. And windowing from underneath when you
de can force it up and
train your neck.
A tight helmet will
inch your ears and
ress against your
orehead. It will
ause headaches and
istract you from
our ride and from sur-
ounding traffic.
When you try on helmets beforeou buy, remember these key
oints
A helmet that fits you properly will
equire some force to put on. It may
eem tight as it slides over your
ead because of the inside padding
ausing resistance.
f a helmet slides too easily over
our head, it will not be snug
nough to remain properly posi-
oned or to prevent annoying wind
oise from filling the helmet. You will know a helmet fits prop-
rly when all of its interior padding
makes solid contact with your head.
A helmet will become uncomfort-
ble and not protect you adequately
f it only makes contact on the top
f your head.
When you put on a full-face helmet,
should hold your cheeks and jaw
rmly. It should make solid contact
with the top and sides of your head.
Many full-face helmets offer remov-
ble/interchangeable cheek pads.
Different size pads can create the
best helmet fit.
You helmet should surround and
"hug" your head with even pressure
throughout. It shouldn't create "hot
spots" due to uneven pressure
points. It should not press uncom-
fortably against your temples, fore-
head or cheeks.
The padding inside a helmet that is
comfortably snug will compress and
remain firm as it molds to your
head.A helmet with padding that creates a
seal around ears will block wind
noise and protect your hearing. It
will not block out important sounds
such a voices or car horns.
Your helmet should not move when
you shake your head forcefully up
and down or from side-to-side.
Your nose or chin should not touch
the faceshield.
A full-face helmet's faceshield
should seal the eye port.
A faceshield should move smoothly
and easily and stay up when youraise it.
A faceshield should
not distort your view
-- anywhere.
Do the "roll-ff"
test to make sure
a helmet will stay
on when you need it
No helmet can protect
you if will not stay on in
an accident. So try this
simple "roll-off" test before
you buy or use a particular
helmet.
Pull on the helmet and snug down
the chin strap. Grab the helmet's
rear edge where it contacts the back
of your neck. Then try to lift and
roll the helmet forward off your
head.
Give it a good tug, even if the pres-
sure is uncomfortable.
If the helmet slides forward and off,you know you should continue to
look for one that stays on through
this test.
Does the helmet you are considering
give you the features you want
most?
When you know a helmet fits com-
fortably and passes the "roll-off"
test, see that it has all other features
you want.
Such comfort features include
Lots of snug padding around your
head...
A snug seal surrounding -- but not
touching -- your ears...
A thick, padded roll hugging the
back of your head and neck...
No protrusions poking or pressing
against your head or face...
One final test before you take it
home
Put on the helmet, tighten the chin-
strap and wear it for at least 20 min-utes...
Get used to how it feels and le
settle in...
After a while, if the helmet ma
you uncomfortable by -- for ex
ple -- by pressing against your
head or the top of your head o
pinching an ear, try cheek-pad
are sized differently. If that do
not do the trick, let that particu
helmet go.
Continue the procedure with a
"perfect prospect" until you finone that satisfies you complete

quickly. Because head injury is a life threatening
condition requiring immediate treatment, some
patients will be enrolled without consent until
a family member can be located. Every attempt

C
hange is one of the constantsin NASCAR, but it still
seemed strange for many tosee Matt Kenseth, who spent allbut two of his NASCAR starts withJack Roush or longtime Roush em-ployee Robbie Reiser as his carowner, driving Joe Gibbs No. 20Toyota in two recent test sessions.
Kenseth stunned the NASCARworld, including Roush himself, last year when he announced whileatop the Sprint Cup points stand-ings that he was swapping teams.
Kenseth had a strong lame-duckrun at Roush, making the Chaseand winning two of the final 10races. Even so, he showed no hint of
regret at his decision and seemedto be looking only forward as hemet with reporters during a recenttest at Daytona InternationalSpeedway.
Everything has been reallygreat, he said of his transition. Idont think it could be any better.
He said the full story wont beknown until after a few points-pay-ing races.
The results pretty much tell thestory, and were a few months awayfrom really seeing results, he said.Ive been extremely encouraged.Im really optimistic about the sea-son, really like my group and reallylike the way they do things over atJGR [Joe Gibbs Racing] and thecars.
Kenseth backed away from draw-ing comparisons between the Fords
he drove for Roush and the Toyotashes driving for Gibbs, pointing out
that since all NASCAR entries havebeen dramatically changed sincelast year that theres no fair com-parison to be made.
Im looking 100 percent forwardand not looking back, so its not re-ally fair to compare anything, hesaid. But, I will say both tests sofar my cars have been really fast. Ireally like how they drive. I reallylike how they react to change, andIve been pretty encouraged withhow everything has been going sofar.
Hes also looking forward toworking with Denny Hamlin and
Kyle Busch, who have had greatsuccess driving Gibbs cars.
There are not many people thatwin more races than those guys, soIm excited to work with them andlearn from them and hopefully beable to contribute as well, he said, adding that he hasnt learned any-thing surprising about his newteammates.
We havent been out on a date oranything yet with either one ofthem so I havent really learnedanything on a personal level, hesaid. Just been working on racingstuff.
Kenseth did say hes spent sometime getting to know his new crewchief, Jason Ratcliff, and thats im-portant because having good chem-istry between a driver and crewchief plays a major part in the suc-
cess of a race team.Ratcliff, who had built a str
resume as a crew chief in the tionwide Series, spent last seaas a Cup crew chief on the NoToyota, which was driven by JLogano, who has moved to the22 Ford at Penske Racing. Kesaid he and Ratcliff, who starthis career as a mechanic and changer for Sadler Racing in and first became a crew chief 1999, have tried to spend somtime together away from the rtrack.
I have been getting to knowa lot more on a personal level
just trying to get to know each
other a little bit as not just a dcrew chief relationship, but kibuild a relationship there so wknow each other a little bit,Kenseth said. Ive really enjothat, and again we havent ratogether yet, but Ive really engetting to know him this wintand spend some time at the shand spend some time at the trat Charlotte and [at Daytona]well.
The on-track results have bfairly encouraging so far. Kentopped the charts on the finalof testing at Daytona with a l194.062 miles per hour and w13th fastest in last weeks raishortened test session at ChaMotor Speedway with a lap a192.143 mph.

HusqvarnaMotorcyclesin 2013
Husqvarna Motorcycles, an in-ernational manufacturer of mo-
orcycles for competition,
ff-road and on-road use, was
riginally founded in Sweden
nd has been part of the BMW
Group since 2007. A motorcycle
rand with Scandinavian roots,
Husqvarna can look back on
more than a century of building
motorcycles, making it the
worlds oldest motorcycle manu-
acturer with an uninterrupted
roduction history.
Based in Cassinetta di Bian-
dronno in the north Italian
province of Varese, the com-
panys flair for technical innova-
tion has received a lasting and
dynamic boost from the alliance
between Husqvarna Motorcycles
and BMW Motorrad.
During its more than ten decades
of existence, Husqvarna Motor-cycles has chalked up some
tremendous successes in interna-
tional off-road racing events,
with a total of 82 world champi-
onship titles to date.
Furthermore, the introduction of
the Husqvarna Nuda 900 and
Husqvarna Nuda 900 R models
signalled the brands return to
the street bike segment in 2011.
Developed in partnership with
BMW Motorrad, these models,
too, are distinguished by Husq-varnas typically pure, sporty
and dynamic design idiom. Most
recently, prospects of additional
expansion of the model range
have been opened up by the pro-
totype Husqvarna Concept
MOAB, Husqvarna Concept
Strada and Husqvarna Concept
BAJA studies.
The model offensive that Husq-
varna Motorcycles kicked off
with the successful launch of its
street bike models is now beingsmoothly extended to its tradi-
tional off-road sector with ex-
tremely dynamic results not
just technically speaking but in
the sporting arena, too.
In fact, 2012 got off to a flying
start with a stage win at the leg-
endary Dakar Rally. This was
followed up by a victory at the
International Italian Motocross
Championship 2012, triumphs at
the German Cross Country
Championship and Spanish
duro Championship,
top ten finishes at the MX2
World Championship, race
at the Enduro World Champ
onship and even a maiden v
tory on asphalt for the new
900 R, leaving no doubt as
sporting clout of Husqvarna
torcycles even at this early
of the 2012 season.
With its sights already set o
year ahead, Husqvarna Mot
cles is now pursuing its maj
model offensive with the pr
tation of the new line-up of
road models for 2013,
comprising high-performan
bikes designed for enduro a
motocross racing as well as
recreational use, which are
dynamic and technically ad
vanced than ever.
