From pg 3. Sergio Gonzalez, acting president of

the El Paso chapter, says the founding members in

Juarez rst started their charity work when some-

one approached one of the members for help with

their child who had been diagnosed with leuke-

mia and had nowhere else to turn. The Centauros

proceeded to adopt “Leslie” as their rst recipient

of their work. When the group grew into El Paso,

they decided to maintain the mission of helpingcancer patients. The group is registered with the

IRS as a non-prot organization and their treasur-

ers are required to report every cent of income and

outow.

Gonzalez says that they hope this transparency,

along with their work, will help change the stigma

of the “biker” culture from one of the rough out-

aw to one of a social group on motorcycles that

can be an integral part of the society at large. Infact, many other MCs in the area are working to

shed the negative stigma of the “outlaw biker” that

has been perpetuated by TV and movies. Inter-

estingly enough, he says the negative idea of the

biker is less so in Mexico, where motorcycles of

all types are more necessary to travel and where

Manny Rodriguez, Secretary of the El Paso chapter,

says they are working hard to bring future charita-

ble events to the area, both in El Paso and in Juarez.

“There is much need everywhere and we are trying

to help where we can.”

The Centauros will be celebrating their 10 yearanniversary in Juarez in September, expecting over

600 persons to attend.

On average, 166,000 Americans

are hospitalized as a result of a

motorcycle accidents each year, and worse yet,

nearly 5,000 will die from motor-

cycle accidents. Numerous oth-

ers will be crippled for life, even

though there are safety

measures in place to reduce injury

and fatality. There are three primary reasons that

have been identied to explain

these numbers:

1. Motorcycles are harder to see than a car.

2. Motorcycles are open air vehicles, and offer no

protection for the rider.

3. Since it’s on two wheels, handling can be dif-

cult with skidding often ending in a crash.

Follow these simple safety tips and you can safely

enjoy the sense of freedom and control that comes

from riding a

motorcycle:

1. Always wear a helmet as well as eye and face

protection.2. Never ride a motorcycle while under the inu-

ence of alcohol or drugs.

3. Ride with extreme care. Steering, accelerat-

ing and braking require skill and a high degree of

coordination.

4. Get licensed (all states require a motorcycle

license).

5. If you are a new rider, take a motorcycle safe

riding class. Take one even if you think you are an

experienced rider.

You’ll be surprised what you didn’t know.

6. Drive Defensively. Do not expect that car driv-

ers will give you the right-of-way.

7. Avoid the center of the lane where debris and

oil droppings from cars accumulate. Also watch

for other hazards

including pot holes, cracks, sand, etc.

8. Wear a proper outt – leather gloves, jacket and

boots will protect you from “road rash.”9. Always ride with your headlight on if permit-

ted by trafc laws even during the daytime. It will

make you more visible

to other drivers.

10. Apply reective tape to your helmet.

11. Maintain your bike regularly. Make sure the

brakes are in order. Do routine chain and engine

checks before riding.

12. Follow all rules of the road and don’t speed.Nearly 40 percent of rid-

ers killed were speeding.

13. Watch out for other

vehicles coming from

driveways and side

streets.

14. Don’t let anyone ride

with you as a passenger

until you are a skilled

rider.Cont. Pg 9.

Cont. from pg 8. There have been numerous

studies, surveys, and tests conducted, and they

all point to wearing a helmet as one of the most

mportant safety tips to follow. One particular

study from the University of Southern California

showed that out of 900 motorcycle crashes, 980

head and neck injuries occurred. The study wasconducted in 1990, but the results still apply to

today; that the largest factor in preventing/reduc-

ng neck and head injuries is to wear

a helmet.

Without a helmet, your chance of

surviving a motorcycle accident is

not very high. Many riders believe

that it is their constitutional right to

have the freedom to wear a helmet

or not. Cases about this have even

reached the U.S. Supreme Court.

Although riders still have that free-

dom to choose in the U.S., one has to

decide if it is really worth it. Motor-

cycle helmets have increased in both

comfort and safety over the years,

so the correct choice should be easy to make.

Maintain your Battery and check your charging system!9 times out of 10 the reason why your bike won’t start is usually because of the battery condition or

oose connections.A charging system failure is less likely but is still possible. I will talk about both of them here.

First look at your battery connections. Check for obvious and easiest to x problems rst. A loose con-

nection, poor ground etc. will likely cause intermittent operation of the starting and charging systems. If

you nd a loose connection and/or corrosion, clean the connections with a wire brush.

My Motorcycle Won’t Start!! What Now?By: Keith Nivon

Before re-attaching apply a little grease to the

contact points. The grease helps to prevent any

of the white corrosion residues building up

around the battery terminals.

Try and start her up now. You still have aproblem? Go down to the mall and buy your-

self a small electronic multimeter. (Make sure

it has both AC and DC volt functions, as well

as a continuity (or OHMS)function. Pull out

the battery and set it on a counter. Set your

multimeter to DC volts. Measure the Battery

voltage by placing the red lead on the positive

and the Black on the negative.

The voltage read should be around 12.5 volts

(higher is OK) If the voltage is less than this

it may indicate a poor battery. Notice I say,

“may” here because the bike’s charging sys-

tem might be at fault. In this case the battery

will most likely be OK.

Conrm that the electrolyte level in each cell

of the battery is good. Add distilled water

only to cell’s with a low level. (Obviously

you cannot add water to a maintenance free

battery) Charge the battery overnight with aslow charger only. Motorcycle batteries cannot

handle a fast charge. Make sure the charger

only charges at a rate of 2 amps or less.

Install the battery and try and start her again.

If she still won’t go buy a new battery and

your problem will likely be

xed. If she starts and runs like a charm, then

you have to nd out why the battery went

dead. You need to check thecharging system. Cont. pg 11.

8/8/2019 Sun City Biker - September 2010

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/sun-city-biker-september-2010 11/28September 2010 Sun City Biker 11

Cont. from pg 10. With the engine running, place

the multimeter leads on the battery. Rev the engine

a little. The system voltage should rise with engineRPM. A voltage of around 13.5 to about 14.5

should be displayed. If the voltage stays constant

and/or is slowly decreasing, or if the voltage rises

above 14.7 volts the charging system is not func-

tioning.

What do you do now? You have to check two

things. The Stator and the Regulator. The stator

creates an AC voltage. The regulator changes the

AC to DC voltage and also maintains that volt-

age at the proper level. The Stator can be checkedwith the Ohms function on your meter. Locate and

remove the plug for the stator on the front of the

engine block. You will see two or three

pins inside. Set the meter for low Ohms, and mea-

sure the continuity between these pins. 5 Ohms or

less is what you are looking for here. Set the meter

to the highest setting. With 1 lead attached to a

metal part of bike check for continuity to each pin.

You meter should read innite, or no continuity.

If these tests check out then your stator is ne. If

there is a fault in any of these tests, then see your

dealer. The regulator is the easiest of all to check.

The regulator is made of solid state electronics and

can’t be opened. Replace the regulator if every-

thing else on the charging system checks out or if

there is an overcharging situation.

On most Harley’s you will not know if the charg-

ing system is beginning to fail. The evidence

shows up when you have dim lights or she justwon’t start. There are aftermarket accessories that

you can install on your bike that will tell you the

current state of the charging system.

Save yourself some bucks here!! With a simple

multimeter available from any Electronics parts

store you can troubleshoot your charging system

and check your battery and most likely repair any

problems yourself.

Mot o cro s sDirt Bikes, ATV’s, Quads

Most kids today like to play video games, watch

TV, stay inside or do

common activities with other kids. A while ago

while driving down a

neighborhood I saw, what looked like dirt bike

rider’s, in this deserted

property

near Mon-

tana Vista,Far East of

El Paso, Tx.

I came to

realize these

kids were

picking up

speed and

turning in loose dirt at amazing speeds,

lifting dirt up in the sky, carving dirt trails.

Three kids coming from one family, Yeissen(16),

Yassim(15), Yossem Rubalcava(12), tell me about

experiences from what they been through,

been in the sport since they were little

kids. Motocross is a form of motorcycle

sport or all-terrain vehicle racing held on

enclosed off road circuits, “many kids

have been involved in this sports for

years, many parents would not allow their

kids to participate in such sports due totheir jumps, speeds and of course danger

on the track”, states Yeissen the oldest of

his family, but not only boys are allowed

to ride either, in this sport little girls up

to grown up women ride as well. These three

brother’s also have their youngest sister riding as

well, Yiosselyne Rubalcava(6); youngest from

this young family is also not afraid to go up those

steep hills, through loop sections. To many kidsthey state this is a adrenaline pumping sport,

keeps them addicted to

the speeds and turns,

but they all are also

regular kids, they play

video games, go to

school, but in the end

what they love the most is Motocross, they live

it, dream it, and just like any Big Enthusiast who

once was a kid. During these local races up to15-20 other kids race as well, when they compete

in nationals up to 42 racers can be in the same

category, many faster than others but as most kids

state this sport is not to be feared, you give it your

all and hope you don’t fall, but in the end whether

you win or lose your still standing to go at it next

weekend.

Many of these young boys travel the country, even

some go to other countries just to compete and try

new challenges. Some learn new ways to from for-

eign countries or watch some of their competitors

ride to see if they

can adapt some new

skill. Some do adapt

keep themselves at

a challenge others

keep searching for

harder opponents

to try and becomethe best. Most kids

don’t have a spon-

sor, just their hard-

working parent who

supports this sport.

To many kids, teenagers, and adults, it’s never too

late to try and get into this sport, there’s plenty

categories all at a different ages.

If interested in this active adrenaline sport visityour local motorcycle dealers.

go-gettersCouple live for travel on antique motorcycles

By Luis Perez

SCRIPPS HOWARD NEWS SERVICE

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.

He’s not supposed to be home this late in theyear, but Corky Root was available for a recent

nterview. He was lingering in town, his wife ex-

plained, for a doctor’s appointment.

A living legend in the obscure world of antique-

motorcycle racing, Root, 73, lives in a retirement

community, but every summer through fall since

1965 Root and his wife have been on the road in

search of motorcycle greatness. They’ve seen all

but three of the contiguous 48 states. They aren’tslowing down, even if Corky’s arthritis and asth-

ma are acting up and his doctor is recommending

more pills for his prostate.

“Some of these young 60-year-olds are starting to

give me trouble,” Root says of his colleagues in

the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Asso-

ciation (AHRMA).

In 2009, Root took home four national titles,

ncluding Vintage Motocross 500 Expert Class,

vintage class for riders 70 and older, and twocross-country trophies.

Among these wins was a victory against two-time

world champion Jeff Smith, 75.

“He was having some health problems, so I don’t

want to brag about that too much,” Root says.

Over the years, Root has broken both legs and

countless bones. His hearing is bad from years of

riding atop his powerful, un-mufed machines,

like a 1961 BSA B40 500cc and a 1974 Bultaco

250cc. And yet, the soft-spoken retired high-

school teacher who favors racing T-shirts andbaseball caps strides like a young man and smiles

like a boy.

His wife, traveling partner and onetime pit me-

chanic, Patti, 70, looks comfortable answering the

door to their home. Actually, she is also itching to

leave.

“We’re gypsies,” she says. “That’s the secret of

staying young.”

Their home is covered in trophies, plaques andscrapbooks. Root is somewhat dismissive of them,

insisting, “Some of it is not because I’m fast, it’s

because I’m there.”

He was rst “there” at 19. Just out of high school,

his buddies talked him into an enduro race. He

placed fourth, but was hooked.

In 1965, he was 29, teaching high school and rac-

ing in amateur circuits.

He talked his wife into going to Daytona, Fla., for

Bike Week by explaining that if he went pro, the

racing association would pick up their expenses.

After that, she was hooked, too.

By then, their rst son was a toddler and on the

road with them every summer.

They typically jumped in the motor home on the

last day of school and returned for the rst day of

class.

“We made it a learning experience,” said their

son, Willard Root Jr., 46, a teacher in Cassopo-

is, Mich. “I would know the state motto wher-

ever we were. I would know the state bird, the

capitol, the parks.”

Root was pro until 1977. He has been racingwith AHRMA since then.

“They’ve taught many people what the true

spirit of motorcycling is,” said Woody Graves,

vice president of the Florida Vintage Motocross

Club. “It is devotion and making everything that

you do the best.”

Graves, 54, was there a few years back when, at

the start line during the last race of the season,

Root inexplicably lost consciousness and

fell over.

“When he came to,” said Graves, “the rst

words out of his mouth were, he wanted to

know if he won the race.”

racing is a

dream come

most speed

demons.

And the idea

of building

sports bikefor speed is

an under-

statement.

They are lightweight also. They can easily be ma-

neuvered through bumper-to-bumper trafc, rocky

roads or the narrowest streets and alleys. However,

owning your own sports bike is not just about get-

ting the top of the line motorbike. It is also about

keeping up with the trend as well.

The trend in sports bike can be classied into two

categories – the look and build of the bike and

also the accessories. The look and build of the

bike include its engine and paint job. Just like a

car, a paint job of a motorbike can have an impact

whether or not it is up in the trend. The engine

also helps determine if your bike is trendy or

not. If your bike has a maximum engine speed of

800cc, chances are you have a mediocre trendy

bike. Super bikes, one of three subcategories of sports bike, have engines that feature up to 1100

cc of speed. Hyper sports bikes have even bigger

engines that range from 1100 cc to an eye-popping

1400 cc. Although the sport touring bikes are not

necessarily built for speed, it can endure a long

distance ride incomparable to that other sports

bikes. Bike accessories are the biggest bike en-

hancers to sports bike trend. The most important

and popular of all the accessories would have to bethe motorcycle helmet. Motorcycle helmets can be

found in different designs and styles. For the drive
