The importance of being ready for a disaster can not be stressed enough. The list is not a complicated one but the bottom line is that if some type of disaster hits, then most likely you will not have time to put this together. As the old boy scout's motto says, BE PREPARED. If an emergency situation should happen then the reality could well be that you have to somehow survive on your own until the emergency services kick into action, or some form of aid relief is provided. There is just no way of determining when this will be and could be as short as a few hours but potentially many days. Build Your Own Survival Kit Now This is one of those things that people generally just put off doing. I would recommend that you start quickly and then you will have peace of mind knowing that you and your family can survive. Plan the list with the basics and plan to be able to survive for three days or 72 hours. It actually doesn't not take a lot of planning and is very simple to do. If you consider what could go wrong then it will all start to make sense. For example if a hurricane hit where you live there is a strong likelihood that you will lose what are termed the essential services. it would be normal to lose electricity, gas, water, telephones and this is the best way to start thinking about a kit. Just consider the simple things for your kit and don't over complicate this. Your number one priority is water, then food and some form of first aid supplies. After that you need to consider what form of communications you may have and how long batteries etc will work for. You should also consider your hygiene requirements as sewage systems tend to fail especially with earthquakes. Basic Survival Kit List Water - One person needs 8 pints per day so make sure you have enough stored and easy to access Food - Make sure you have non-perishable food Battery Operated Radio - To be able to listen to the news (Extra batteries) First Aid - A good quality first aid kit in case of injuries Whistle - To attract attention (Flares would also be useful) Face Masks - In case there is dust or harmful air contaminants Wipes - For keeping clean and for toilet purposes
