Dear Stakeholders,

Season’s Greetings. I know you are excited about the holidays and so are we. The enthusiasm is in the air for the holiday season and the other exciting things happening at ACDC.

We are thrilled that since July 2011, 14 students have earned their GED. Also, ACDC is featured in two publications: Education Next, Fall 2011 and Principals Leadership, October 2011. Additionally, we welcome our new assistant principal, Mr. Ronald Bradford, Jr., former Lead Math teacher at Albert Hill Middle School. And finally, we have a new elevator!

I hope you enjoy this edition of “The Chronicle”, which covers much of our exciting news. Happy Holidays to you and your family.

SOL Testing December 5th -16th

The Performance Learning Center is up and running to a wonderful start at ACDC! Students are engrossed in completing their online modules for their classes, and have anxiously awaited their first opportunity for SOL testing that began last week.

In addition to their fulfillment of course requirements, PLC students have also participated in other components of the PLC program as operated by Communities in Schools (CIS), to include Job Shadowing (Retreat Hospital), First Element (investment club), Nurturing Parents workshops, and transitional activities such as a field trip to J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College.

The fall administration of the SOL began on December 6, 2011 and will continue through December 16, 2011. Encourage all PLC students to make the mark!

New Test In 2014 there will be a new version of the Official GED

Test and it will be computerized!

The new price is $58.00 for the complete battery and partial tests and retests are $10.00 per subject.

Adult Education Information

Adult Basic Education Classes Courses are offered to adults 20 years and older who do not complete his/her education in the traditional time and manner. Instruction stresses remediation in reading comprehension, vocabulary enrichment, spelling, writing, grammar and mathematics. Emphasis is also placed on the basic skills of everyday life situations. Upon completion of the Adult Basic Education Program, students may enter the G.E.D. preparatory program. The major goal of the Adult Basic Education Program is to produce better citizens, parents

and workers.

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Designed for speakers of other languages who wish to learn to speak, read and write English in an American cultural context. Classes are available for beginner, intermediate and advance levels.

CERTIFIED NURSING ASSISTANT (CNA)

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) The CNA program is offered to Richmond City adult residents enrolled through the Adult Education program. The course provides students with the opportunity to become "Health Professionals" and "Public Servants". The training and education offered at ACDC is taught by a licensed RN and is designed to prepare students to pass the state board examination. Passing the CNA certification exam will provide more employment opportunities. The program runs for 18 weeks. A standardizes test and registration fees are required to enter the program.

Get Moving RPS Activity Challenge at ACDC

From October 10th

to November 18th

, 40 ACDC staff members joined RPS in the “Get Moving RPS” activity challenge that rewards you for being active!

At the end of the challenge there was one winner for each school, department or location. Our goal was to move across the State of Virginia and stop at historic locations along the route on a virtual reality tour. Participants tracked and submitted

Family Literacy is an umbrella term that is used to describe various programs involving family members and literacy activities. Richmond Public Schools has played a vital role in the area's efforts to embrace comprehensive Family Literacy Programs since the late 1980's. Currently this comprehensive program is located at the Adult Career Development Center.

The components of this program include:

-Adult Basic Education

-Parenting Classes -PACT (Parent and Child Together Time)

The goals for RPS's Family Literacy Program are:

-Strengthen the family.

-Prepare the child for school, socially and academically. -Assist parents in achieving personal goals (education, job search), while increasing their parenting awareness.

Each year families are served with many success stories of families gaining independence. The adults in the program are finishing with a GED, job skills and/or higher academic accomplishments and the children are leaving prepared for school. In addition, parenting skills are built and enhanced, making each household affected, stronger. The success of the program can be attributed to its continuity and the collaboration with other Richmond Public School programs and community partners.

Fridays Focus days at ACDC give our students an opportunity to focus on rigor, relevance and building relationships in many ways.

Our rigor component is fulfilled each Friday during first block through content area academic review sessions. With emphasis on Mathematics and Writing, our team teachers use all core content areas to hone in on improving math and writing skills with students in group sessions.

Our relevancy component is fulfilled each Friday during second block through assemblies and gender-based group mentoring activities. The assemblies and mentoring activities are designed to help students in life-planning. Since September, the students have benefitted from speakers from GRASP, the Richmond City Fire Department, The Richmond Technical Center, The Certified Nursing Aide program. Students have also enjoyed smaller group-mentoring sessions with School Counselors, Teachers and representatives from J. Sargeant Reynolds, Fortis College, and the City of Richmond Health Department.

Our relationship component is fulfilled each Friday during third block with emphasis on student and teachers building stronger relationships. Starting with D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read), students and teachers read together and then head to designated areas in the building for recreational activities together.

3 & 4 year old Head Start

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. sponsors a Holiday Gathering for ACDC’s Teen Moms

ACDC’s Head Start and Early Head Start programs provide instructional and developmental opportunities for children from six months to five years in preparation for transition to kindergarten.

The ladies have committed to meeting with our young teen mothers once a month to help them with the resources that they may need. This commitment has been in place for at least 12 years here at ACDC. The two young ladies pictured in the center photo below were recently recognized for their achievement. Malaysha (Left) recently received her GED and former student Tyesha received her GED last year and with the help of this program is now a student at the University of Richmond majoring in Criminal Justice while working with RPS as a Title I tutor.

ACDC’s Head Start students participated in several activities throughout the school year thus far, including trips to the Pumpkin Patch and the Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens. The pictures above are from our Halloween festival.

On Monday, December 5th

Richmond provided at least 25 Parenting/Pregnant

students with pajamas for their children.

This event started six years ago, by Otelia Smith

(pictured on the right), former ACDC secretary.

In remembrance, Mrs. Smith’s

husband and daughter were in attendance for this

event.

Amicae of Richmond provided at least 25

Parenting/Pregnant students with Pajamas.

This invite was started 6 years ago, by the late

Otelia Smith (pictured on the right),whom was the

school secretary.

year event.

The theme for the motivational assembly for the young males of ACDC was

“I AM SOMEBODY!” The Omega men presented information to the

ACDC gents on the importance of coming to school daily and the many

benefits of staying in school. Each young male received a necktie after the

words of encouragement and a tie tying presentation.
