The Feast of the Reformation October 30, 2016 + 9:00 and 11:00 A.M. Welcome to the Lord’s Day. Holy Scripture tells us to “remember those who spoke the Word of God to you” (Hebrews 13:7). By remembering them, we remember how God worked through them for the sake of His Church. On this day, we remember the reformers of the 1500s, led by Martin Luther, whose preaching freed the Church not to trust in itself but in Christ crucified alone. These reformers, by God’s own grace, are some of our “fathers in the faith” whom we are called to honor and respect.

As We Consider the Election . . . . In The Screwtape Letters by C. S. Lewis, a “junior devil,” Wormwood, receives letters from his uncle, Screwtape, a “senior devil.” Screwtape explains to Wormwood different ways to keep a man from being Christian. He refers to the man as “the patient.” My dear Wormwood . . . Be sure that the patient remains completely fixated on politics. Arguments, political gossip, and obsessing on the faults of people they have never met serves as an excel-lent distraction from advancing in personal virtue, character, and the things the pa-tient can control. Make sure to keep the patient in a constant state of angst, frustra-tion and general disdain towards the rest of the human race in order to avoid any kind of charity or inner peace from further developing. Ensure that the patient con-tinues to believe that the problem is “out there” in the “broken system” rather than recognizing there is a problem with himself. Keep up the good work! Your uncle, Screwtape

PRELUDE

“Ein Feste Burg” (A Mighty Fortress) … Benjamin M. Culli

RINGING OF THE BELLS

Please stand and turn towards the cross as it is carried into the sanctuary.

PROCESSIONAL HYMN “Thy Strong Word” green hymnal #233

THE APOSTOLIC GREETING P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the

communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C: And also with you.

Please kneel.

THE KYRIE “Out of the Depths I Cry to You” Choir: Out of the depths I cry to you; O Father, hear me calling. Incline your ear to my distress In spite of my rebelling. Do not regard my sinful deeds. Send me the grace my spirit needs; Without it I am nothing. All: All things you send are full of grace; You crown our lives with favor. All our good works are done in vain Without our Lord and Savior. We praise the God who gives us faith And saves us from the grip of death; Our lives are in his keeping.

Today’s lit-urgy follows the pattern of the “German Mass” pub-lished by Martin Lu-ther in 1526 A.D. and includes the hymns that he composed or used in that service. This “German Mass” was one of the first West-ern Chris-tian services composed in the every day lan-guage of the people.

PRAYER OF THE DAY P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Let us pray . . . Almighty God, gracious Lord, pour out your

Holy Spirit upon your faithful people. Keep us steadfast in your Word, protect and comfort us in all temptations, defend us against all our enemies, and bestow on the Church your sav-ing peace; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen Please be seated.

FIRST LESSON Revelation 14:6-7 6Then I saw another angel flying directly overhead, with an eternal gospel to proclaim to those who dwell on earth, to every nation and tribe and language and people. 7And he said with a loud voice, “Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come, and worship him who made heaven and earth, the sea and springs of water. L: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

PSALM 46 “God Is Our Refuge and Strength” … Behnke

Choir: Antiphon God is our refuge and our strength, our only help in trou-

ble.

Choir: We will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountain fall into the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,

the holy place where the Most High dwells. C: Antiphon Choir: Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; He lifts His voice, the earth melts. The Lord Almighty is with us, the God of Jacob is our fortress. C: Antiphon Choir: He makes wars cease He breaks the bow and burns the shields with fire. Be still, be still, be still and know that I am God. The Lord Almighty is with us, the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Psalm 46 is the psalm on which Luther based the hymn, “A Might For-tress,” gener-ally recog-nized today as “the hymn of the Refor-mation.”

C: Antiphon Choir: God is our refuge and our strength, our only help in trouble.

SECOND LESSON Romans 3:19-28 19Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin. 21But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it—22the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: 23for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24and are jus-tified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. 26It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. 27Then what be-comes of our boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law. L: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Please stand.

Do you wish to be happy? Do you want to know how to spend the day truly blessed? I of-fer you a drink that is spiri-tual. This is not a drink for drunkenness that would cut off even mean-ingful speech. This does not cause us to babble. It does not disturb our vision. Here it is: Learn to sing psalms! Then you will see pleasure in-deed. Those who have learned to sing with the psalms are easily filled with the Holy Spirit. ~ John Chrysostom,

349-407 A.D., homily on Ephe-sians

GRADUAL HYMN

GOSPEL P: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the 8th chapter. C: Glory to you, O Lord.

31Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” 33They answered him, “We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?” 34Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. 35The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. 36So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”

P: The Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ.

Please be seated.

I opposed in-dulgences and all the papists, but never with force. I sim-ply taught, preached, and wrote God’s Word; other-wise I did nothing. And while I slept, or drank Wit-tenberg beer with my friends Philip and Amsdorf, the Word so greatly weak-ened the pa-pacy that no prince or em-peror ever inflicted such losses upon it. I did noth-ing; the Word did every-thing. ~ Martin Luther, sermon on

SERMON “The Fourth Commandment”

P: What is the fourth commandment? C: Honor your father and your mother. P: What does this mean? C: We should fear and love God so that we do not despise or an-

ger our parents and other authorities, but honor them, serve and obey them, love and cherish them.

Please stand.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give him thanks and praise. P: It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times

and in all places give thanks to you, O Lord our God, king of all creation, for you have had mercy on us and given your only-begotten Son that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. Grant us your Spirit, gracious Father, that we may give heed to the testament of your Son in true faith and, above all, firmly take to heart the words with which Christ gives to us his body and blood for our forgive-ness. By your grace, lead us to remember and give thanks for the boundless love which he manifested to us when, by pour-ing out his precious blood, he saved us from your righteous wrath and from sin, death, and hell. Grant that we may receive his body and blood, as a gift, guarantee, and pledge of his sal-vation. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To you alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen

THE LORD’S PRAYER P: Lord, remember us in your kingdom, and teach us to pray: C: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our tres-passes, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen

WORDS OF INSTITUTION P: In the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, at His com-

mand, and with His own words, we receive his testament:

Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is my body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of me.”

In the same way also he took the cup after the supper, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in my blood,

which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink of it, in remembrance of me.

SANCTUS “Isaiah in a Vision Did of Old”

Choir: Isaiah in a vision did of old The Lord of hosts enthroned on high behold; His splendid train was wide outspread until Its streaming glory did the temple fill. Above his throne the shining seraphim With sixfold wings did rev’rence unto him: With two each seraph his his glorious face, And two about his feet did interlace, And with the other two he soared on high; And one unto another thus did cry: Congregation:

PEACE

P: The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: Amen

AGNUS DEI (“Lamb of God”)

The congregation is ushered forward for Communion. If you cannot use the steps to the altar, you may either ask an usher to have Communion brought to you, or you may go to the altar in the side (west) chapel. Those not communing may cross their arms over their chest for a blessing. Holy Communion is the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ which He joyfully gives to His Church to eat and to drink. This gift bestows tre-mendous benefits. His body and blood forgives ours sins, strengthens our faith, binds us to the Lord, and unites us with each other. In this is life and salvation. The Lord therefore invites to His altar baptized Christians who trust that they will receive in Holy Communion all that He promises there: His body and blood, the forgiveness of sins, union with Christ and His Church, life, and salvation. Know that He gives it to you with great joy.
