Our meeting in March was a success with the Mayor, V.P. of Probus Canada and presidents of the other Probus Clubs in Burlington helping us celebrate our 25 th anniversary with a cake complete with logo on it. I want to personally thank the 25 th anniversary committee for a job well done. We were presented with a 25 th anniversary certificate from Probus Canada by V.P. Bob Boone who is also the Director of Ontario District 3. His worship Mayor Goldring also read and presented the proclamation of March as Probus month in Burlington to the presidents. I can now wish the Mixed Club a happy 1 st anniversary. Our Speaker Bruce Taylor was given a well- deserved standing ovation for his story of a turned around life. Curling is now in the playoffs, tulips and daffodils are up 2” (5cm). Golfing can’t be far off. My wife Anne and I are enjoying Grand parenting and recently attended the Guelph Symphony Orchestra Faure’s Requiem at the beautiful Basilica. Anne also ran in the Chili half marathon, plays tennis and bridge. It is important that we say hello to the new members and make them feel welcome. While there are other applications, Bob Nielsen is a new member, be sure and greet him. I have been informed by Peter Hughes that he will again assume the membership chair assisted by Mike McInnis. We thank Mike for his work. I will be attending the Ontario District 3 meeting Friday April 20, 2018 which will be held at Credit Valley Golf Club, 2500 Old Carriage Rd. Mississauga L5C 1Y7 starting at 11:00 a.m. I hope to be accompanied by our acting Treasurer. The cost is $25pp. and I will ask the mgt. committee to approve a cheque payable to Bob Boone for the required amount. Please support Dave McKay the events chairman by signing up for the theatre outings. Your Shaw tickets are payable ($60pp.) at our meeting. Also plan to support Dennis Colameco for the golfing event near the end of May (date will be known when Dennis gets back from Florida). I am sure that he will need prizes. We need to defend the trophy against the Burlington Men’s Probus Club. The event will be held at Cambridge same as before I believe. Wasn’t that a party!!! Not quite what the Irish Rovers sang about but our March 12th meeting certainly was special. Mayor, Rick Goldring, and Bob Boone from Probus Canada helped our president Ron Luxon with the official cake cutting. The rest of our members and guests did a stellar job with the official cake eating. Festivities were further enhanced by the fact that no one felt compelled to burst into a happy anniversary song. Special thanks are in order to Rod McGrath for sourcing and delivering the cake and to an anonymous young lady at Fortino’s for her amazing decorating job. It truly was sad to have to cut the cake. The cake is done but the celebrations for our 25th anniversary will continue---stay tuned.

Mike Wain for the 25th ctee.

… President’s Message Continued Like last year we are seven months into the fiscal year – think of joining a committee or becoming part of management. Let myself or other management committee members know. A Nominating Committee will be formed shortly. Welcome back Snowbirds but leave the stormy there. Please join us April 9th to enjoy our speaker Douglas Purdon (Art Fraud or Forgery). Ronald Luxon, President

Guest Speaker – Douglas Purdon

DOUGLAS PURDON was born in Toronto and is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art (AOCA) and is a full-time painter and teacher living in Toronto.

His preferred medium is oil, but he also works in watercolour and acrylic. His work has appeared in The International Artist Magazine and numerous other publications. In 2005 he was awarded the Museum Purchase Award by the Mystic Seaport Museum in Mystic Connecticut. He is an elected member of The Society of Canadian Artists (SCA), and The Ontario Society of Artists OSA. He is a professional member of the Arts & Letters Club of Toronto. He also has written a book on Oil Painting

He has been educational advisor for Winsor & Newton a major art supplies manufacturer since 1997 and lectures on painting materials and techniques at colleges and universities. He has taught painting at Loyalist College, Belleville, Summer School in the Arts since 2002. And he has also taught for the University of Toronto – School of Continuing Studies from 2003 – 2016. In 2012, he was awarded the Excellence in Teaching Award for the Department of Arts and Sciences. His

courses focused on 20th Century Cultural Art History.

Since retiring from the university he gives talks for private clubs and organizations. Some of the topics he covers are:

ART FORGERY, ART CRIME in TODAY'S WORLD, CANADIAN WAR ARTISTS, IN THE STUDIOS OF THE MASTERS, NORMAN ROCKWELL etc.

His talk to our club will be on Art Fraud or Forgery and I know the members will find it extremely interesting and sometimes amusing. He is represented by Galleries not only here in Canada and the U.S. but also overseas as well. Doug is also married to well know crime author Rosemary Aubert.

Duncan McPhail, Chair, Speakers’ Committee

Membership We are still awaiting the last few stragglers to settle their currently due membership fees. We imagine, that like Mike McInnes, they are off in warmer climes - please enjoy. We will drop a few numbers this year and hope to stay around 140 members; however the grim reaper, relocations outside of Burlington and age are taking a toll on our numbers. We will be in a position, in due course, to confirm our numbers and we thank the majority who have paid their fees. We are looking for additional “new rookies”, so if your friends, relatives or even so young a lad as you enquire, invite them to come and enjoy the Probus experience. For those who are attending our February 12 meeting, see you there, and if you wish to check if you are current or not with your fees, I’ll be available at the back of the room.

- Mike McInnes, Membership Chair
